I have found myself in Des Moines twice in the past six months - both times we decided to stay at the Renaissance. It's right downtown, there is free parking in the lot across the street on weekends, and it is a historical landmark property - very beautiful hotel. The layout is pretty wonky, however. Some rooms are huge, some are just strangely shaped. Just depends on what you get, I guess.

It's great and all, but what's with no fans in the bathrooms? Update that shit.

I got stuck in Iowa for a weekend, but at least I would up at this Marriott property. This place is a historical landmark; FDR and Eleanor stayed here once, and there are countless pictures on the walls documenting their stay. The architecture and name have been preserved from when this hotel was independently owned. The rooms were very nice; the suite they gave me was huge. The service was good although the restaurant was very bland and Midwestern.
There was an art festival close by and the hotel was pretty busy on the weekend I was there, but the staff was very efficient and quick to assist. Nice quiet A/C, clean rooms, and a comfortable bed. Overall a good experience; if I'm ever stuck in Iowa again, I'll be sure to stay here.

One of the nicest hotel rooms I have every had - hands down!

Big spacious clean suite with kitchen, great view, sofa, chairs, king-size bed, good cable tv, super friendly staff, etc. Awesome!

And the breakfast buffet for $11 was outstanding - without question, the BEST BACON I HAVE EVER EATEN!

Those Iowans really know their pig parts!

I stayed here over the weekend when I was in town for a wedding.  It was very nice.  I stayed in a room with two double beds and it had two closets and two full bathrooms.  It made getting ready in the morning pretty easy when sharing it with my brother.  the only thing that was difficult was it had no counter space and the two beds made it a little tight in the room.  My parents had a king suite and it was HUGE.  Had a kitchen area, big bathroom, and a big bed.  It was very nice.  I stayed at the actual Marriott in downtown and I have stayed here (which is owned by Mar riot) and they are both very nice and would recommend them to anyone.  As far as the price, we got a group discount cause of the wedding so we got a great deal but could imagine that it is a little pricey.
