12 reviews for Renaissance New York Hotel Times Square
One of Renaissance New York Hotel Times Square's Favorite Reviews What's This?
I loved this hotel! I stayed here with two friends back in January and was reminded of it when someone asked for a nice hotel to stay at in NYC. I find it ironic that it's called the Renaissance Hotel because it is very modern in design and features. When I saw the big "R" sign outside I was expecting something very different (in a bad way). So happy when we were greeted by the friendly staff, was able to check in early, and just in awe of how nice everything was. My favorite feature was a heater behind the bathroom mirror so when you take a shower there is a circle that doesn't steam up so you can see your clean self after! No need to wipe the mirror with your hands...awesome!

Contrary to what most reviews are saying, the hotel is not in the heart of Times Square, not in the middle of all the bright billboards and jumbo-trons, not between all the main shops and theatres, and just outside where most of the camera wielding tourist like to hang at, and I admit, I was one of them.
Don't get me wrong, the Renaissance is just a few steps away from all this but for the purpose of being in the middle of all the action, I recommend staying at the Marriott Marquis.
The location of the Renaissance Hotel is at the North end of Broadway & 7th, at the outskirts of Times Square. None of the hotel's rooms really have the best view of everything Times Square has to offer, with the front of the hotel facing SE and the other end facing NW. All the activity is towards the SW side of the hotel, where no hotel rooms are facing. My room in particular was a corner room facing North which unfortunately didn't have the greatest view. Looking out my window were 2 huge corona bottles looking back at me.
The best view of everything from the hotel is only from its restaurant. It is located on the 2nd floor and faces the opposite end towards the jumbo tron, where the New Years Ball is dropped. One of the best views of Times Square no doubt! I didn't get a chance to eat at the restaurant but did marvel at the sight it had to offer, which I personally thought was the centerpiece of the hotel.
Sculptures of bodily fluids dripping from the ceilings.
A lounge that seems more like a message parlour.
Rude staff. If you like being bossed around by black women, give this place a shot.
Bar tendors are careless and seem to take little pride in their work.
The bar and restaurant are way over-priced. Eight USD for a heinekin...4 USD for a small oz bottle of water.
And when you step out of this hotel, you step into a flood of smelly, sickening human beings.
We used priceline and bid $225 per night for a 4 star hotel in Times Square (I know I know, but I'm not going to pretend I'm anything other than a shameless tourist) and were placed at the Renaisance New York Hotel Times Square. Decent price for a NY hotel during the 08/09 holiday season.
I cannot rave enough about this hotel. We arrived to the hotel after a red-eye flight. it was 4:30am. The kind girl at the front desk let us check in...immediately. What joy the early check-in brought to the bleary eyed and exhausted. She was an angel. and the doorman kept on greeting us with Welcome Back, which i was flattered by until I realized he said it to everyone who entered without carrying luggage. still a nice touch.
The location was PERFECT (for us). Next to the subway station and TKTS Discount Booth, within walking distance to...well at least half of the places we wanted to venture, from Central Park to Rockefeller Center to the theaters to the oh-so-satisfying chicken and rice stand.
Our wonderful room overlooked the hustle and bustle of 7th Avenue. The bathroom amenities were from Lather, a shop that I've always passed by in Old Town Pasadena and wondered about (after using the products, I wouldn't buy them from the store, but you can believe I eagerly hoarded them during our stay). Oh, and for some reason and perhaps because we were technologically incompetent, the sound for the TV only blasted out in the bathroom...trippy.

The most generous four-star rating in history. Why? The network service is grossly overprices (by which I mean it costs anything at all), and the hotel for some odd reason failed to service my room on two of four nights. Yes, I could have complained, but I was tired and, hell, I don't change my sheets at home every night.
And I got a very weird voicemail in my room on day two, from a guy complaining about being "charged double for a no-show, which [he] would be happy to explain if only Danielle would call him back." Wonder what they were up to.
But, all that said, the Renaissance is stylish and ideally situated in the middle of Times Square, the beds are exquisitely comfortable, and the staff was very gracious. And the shower was glassed in, which is a damned sight nicer that a slimy nylon curtain.
All in all, a nice place to stay.

I've stayed at this hotel on a few different occasions - usually when I am attending business in NY but once or twice for a quick getaway and have never been let down - they are always very helpful and friendly.
Even though at least a few months went by until I returned, they remembered me (not by name but by face) and made it a point to let me know. That means alot to me - god knows at the local CVS around here you can go in there 100 times and the same person behind the counter will only ask "do you have your extra care card" so going to the city with so many people it blows my mind that they did remember. They're good at business and good with people. They always have great recommendations for dining - not matter what type of place we are looking for.
The rooms are always spotless and everything is in working order. The only downside to this place is that it's tough to find - I always just search for the large "R" but at night it's tough to spot. The lobby is tiny. I'm not that great driving in the city - too many things I want to look at so I lose focus....Also, once in you need to take an elevator to go up to their "main" lobby. Once there, there are always at least 2 or 3 staffers ready and waiting to assist you. Then you need to take another elevator up to the rooms.
They used to have an absolutely awesome restaurant (which I cannot think of the name) about a year and a half ago - I mean it was to die for - and then when I recently was back there in the Summer, they had a new one - that is a chinese restaurant I believe - name freeze again - sorry - ate there once - disliked it and would not go back. Very small menu and not at all what one would expect.
Besides that, I love the place and now start to feel at "home" when I arrive. Worth the money and worth staying at whether its for one night or a few nights.

Located just north of Times Square, this hotel is right in the middle of the great electronic billboards and sights. Close to the theater district also, and easy walks to the subway, this hotel is well situated.
Very pleasant and knowledgeable staff. The Concierge was especially helpful.
Rooms were on the small size for a Marriott, but were spotless with new modern furniture and a comfy bed. The hotel just recently completed a $26M renovation, and it shows nice. Lobby is small by Marriott standards. It's dining room overlooks Times Square for some great views.

I guess they have gone through a renovation this year as everything is in great shape and very modern. One morning while I was waiting for a friend in a lobby, 2 managers were moving the furniture around to give it a better look?
I ended up staying here because I got it off of PriceLine.
From the moment I walked in the door from my night flight from San Francisco, everyone was very gracious. And I was able to check-in early which was a plus. It took me awhile to figure out the layout - the hotel restaurant is hidden behind the bar, but they have great big windows overlooking Times Square.
It is definitely one of the better hotels to stay at and the double bed room was large. I would definitely stay here again on a rate I can afford.
The cafe on the lobby floor is the best spot in the world for the New Year's Day. I want to make a reservation for it now so I can get a spot near the floor size windows overlooking the time square. The view represents New York city of now. In fact, it is everything that is America. If you sit here and watch, you'll understand what I mean. There's no better place. It is worth every penny for me.
The hotel was recently decorated. It no longer has that stodgy look of the past, and it was tastefully upgraded with whimsical contemporary style of materials and shapes. Not pretentiously cool like W, but approachable hip.
The room is clean. Spacious. Well equipped. Unlimited phone and internet costs $17/day extra, which is reasonable in midtown in my experience. Elevators and AC are little noisy, and voices do echo in the hallway. I highly recommend you skip the junior suites in the lower floors, because ordinary rooms in the higher floors are equally spaced and much more quiet. (by the way, avoid room 517, noisy and too much light coming in from outside, like a cheap motel room in Vegas.)
The rooms are much bigger than W and more comfortable. The lobby staff is pretty good -- but the key system still needed some improvement as I had to deal with several trips downstairs to make sure until the electric key worked for my room. Bellhops used a lot of foul language when no one was around -- and I happened to listening -- and they weren't overly friendly. I think that needs to be addressed.
The gym is small, but not any different from all other hotels in midtown.
But the location is fabulous. If you're over 50 on business trip, this may not be your place. If you're bringing teenagers on a family trip, this place could gets you some kudos. If you're single, well, Time Square is right outside your door.

Great place to stay if you are in the area and want to stay somewhere with a lot of action! Its right in the heart of Times Square..I stayed here a couple years ago for New Years and although I'll never to go Times Square again for New Years.the hotel is still a good pick.
The streets get so packed on NYE that you can't even see the street through all the people. I don't know what we were thinking going here at that time of year. Its definitely ONLY a touristy crowd..The locals don't step foot here around NYE time. Anyways, since we were staying at the hotel, it was easier for us to get around the streets that were closed off. The police were guarding every street, but we just showed them our room key to the hotel and they let us pass through when we were coming back after having dinner outside the hotel. In any case, if you do happen to come here for NYE, the hotel provides a nice view of the dropping of the ball and the stage area.. However, don't be surprised if you have to squint your eyes to see the ball drop (even if you're standing right in front of it!) ..Its about as big as a couple basketballs. On TV they make it look huge, but in person it was a total disappointment.
Back to the hotel, it was very clean...The staff is friendly, also they have a great restaurant with a killer view of times square. Great food also..If its a holiday, I would suggest making reservations to eat here, even if you are staying at the hotel.
Also, the concierge is very helpful when it comes to booking tours/sightseeing etc.
Definitely a favorite in NYC.

Pretty good. It's in the middle of Times Square so it's very convenient, and it has weird decorations/structures from the ceiling that look like Q-tips. The rooms themselves are clean and the bathroom shower spacious. It is nice, but not the best hotel I've gone to - I'll reserve that status for the suites I've seen in the Venetian and Wynn (Las Vegas), Twin Farms (Vermont), and this random French Canadian breakfast inn (Montreal), the name of which I've forgotten.
I stayed here for 3 days the weekend prior to Labor Day. The room was well appointed, clean and very nice and quiet. The lobby areas had recently been redecorated, nicely, if a bit whimsically. The doormen, and lobby staff were very nice, but the room service staff needs some work. We were unable to get a proper late night snack delivery ever, and once was delivered spoiled milk! (In their defense, they did comp the dessert) Other than that, just fine, and you can't beat the location!
