As someone who is picky about her hair and has suffered some pretty horrendous haircuts in her lifetime, I can wholeheartedly lend my support to Anjela and Lona at Remedy. Both of them are friendly, considerate, and really listen to your concerns and make sure to find out everything you want BEFORE scissors even come close to your hair.

I am a big fan and repeat customer of Anjela's, but needed a haircut ASAP and she was booked solid for the next week. By some miracle, Lona had an opening the next morning (according to other yelp-ers, she is sometimes hard to book due to her devoted clientele from her old place). I went in, and got one of the best haircuts of my life (another one being the first haircut I got by Anjela). Lona even impressed me by pulling out a magazine from under her station of hairstyles on asians, to try and specifically address my hair's texture (the magazine didn't end up being helpful because I neither perm nor razor-cut my hair, but I was still impressed!)

Anyways, I got exactly what I wanted and more. My hair looks healthy, shiny, and has great movement and just enough layering to be bouncy and full without being too high maintenance or thin and raggedy.

As far as cost goes, it's pretty standard for a higher-end salon. I pay $65 for my cut and blow-dry. I find this a decent deal, as hair that is cut really well tends to grow out better, and looks less crappy when bay area weather acts up. For example, after I trim my own bangs, whenever even a little fog rolls in, the bangs go flat, clumpy, and weird looking. But whenever I have them cut/trimmed at Remedy (which your stylist will do for FREE once you become a client, I just pay a tip to show appreciation), my bangs look great even if some humidity and wind attacks them.

The salon environment is nice and pleasant, and everyone is really friendly and seems happy to work there, which I think says a lot about the quality of the salon overall. Try it out, you and your hair won't be disappointed!

I must be out of my mind to not have reviewed Remedy!! Sadly I just relocated back down to Southern CA but for the last 2+ years I lived in Emeryville and worked down the street from Remedy. I used to get my hair cut by Karen but after she moved I got hooked up with Lona Farmer, my hair soul mate. Lona has not only perfected her craft but she's just a pleasure to be with. I mean at my first appointment she was finishing my sentences/thoughts.

But for reals what I love about Lona is she is honest with you. If you want a full bang but you have a round face--- Lona will let you know whats up. She also shared my sentiments for "warmth" aka red hair color. I'm a brunette and I Hate red in my hair. Lona never did that to me thank god. I would say Lona's biggest perk is that she can give you what you ask for. Just make sure you are specific. I'm sure all the other stylists are great but abviously I am loyal to Lona. Beware she's brought her following from her former Walnut Creek salon so sometimes you have to book appointment a few weeks in advance.

Monica, Zulma, Lona... I've seen all their work and I would send my best friends and Mom to either/all of them! My heart though is with Dani who has taken me from short, sassy, choppy feminine cuts to my current long, layered look. She is a genius with style and COLOR and is equally fab with straight or curly looks.

I'm a bit of a product junky and she has never let me down... steering me away from buying the one with the pretty packaging (I'm a sucker for good design) and, instead, finding me the perfect styling cream for my thick, sometimes frizzy hair.

happy hair : )

I moved to Oakland from London and despite the huge number of hairdressers in the Bay Area, I was having a hard time finding someone to trust with highlights...and someone who didn't immediately frizz up the show with a razor. Anyway, a Yelp search turned up Remedy salon and I got an appointment with Lona. Two years and many happy hair dos later I wanted to Yelp her for the fantastic job she does with the scissors and bleach, and for her great chair side conversation.

I was soooo chuffed when Remedy rolled in to E-Ville 'cos it was tough 'back in the day' to find a great spot for a truly Cool Cut here in the 'hood! I have received great haircuts from several of the artists at remedy, Wendy , Zulma, Karen... I tend to decide I need a cut and then want to get in right away (I am a Performer too and go for the "Glam" styles);  I have switched around a lot from person to person there and have almost always felt like I have gotten what I wanted and what I asked for. The folks who work the phones and make appointments are always super helpful and I would say that I have felt tended to everytime I have gone to Remedy... great spot - highly recommended!!!

Monica is my favorite stylist for both cut and color. Every single time,  her professionalism and technique was impeccable and articulate. Her expertise for choice of color, cut, and styling was exceptionally suited to my taste. She is passionate about her work and totally easy going, fun, and cool. She listens to my needs and understand the crazy shape of my head and the way my funky hairline grows..I never had so many compliments about my hair until I met Monica. Thank you Monica, you are Superb!!

My hair cut came out fine but the girl didn't bother to wrap my hair after washing it so I ended up with a back full of water. (I mean REALLY full of water. They had to use a hair dryer so that I wouldn't drip on the floor). She also cut her finger AND nicked my ear while she was cutting.

The end result wasn't bad, but the Edward Scissorhands style of cutting should be saved for those who aren't quite so clumsy. Ow!

Just met Monica today...very cool gal. She is detailed oriented, communicates fully your options, and verifies what cutting techniques I'm ok with (which I'm not ok with razors for my hair.)...
This was by far the best salon experience in a long, LONG time. I even uploaded my freshly cut and styled hair for all to judge for themselves. I really love it. It's easy, cute, and sexy.
Thank you Monica! I will be back in 6-8 weeks :)

I went in for waxing from Song and a Haircut from Zulma and the truth is that I thought long and hard before writing this review because both of these ladies were super cool and the atmosphere was comfortable but stylish.
My waxing with Song was fabulous, she was kind and patient. She took it slow and explained everything. The results were stellar.
My haircut with Zulma started out great; she took the time to talk with me about what I was looking for. I didn't walk in there with a great description so those missing three stars are not about her not living up to any vision that I had of what my hair should have looked like afterword.

*She stopped my haircut to talk on the phone: -1 star. I'm paying for the stylist's time.

The next morning when I woke up I realized . . .

*That there was a random strand of chopped hair somewhere between the length of my full length hair and my bangs. -1 star (I kept it for that first day just to show everyone how strange it was)

When I was going to fix my hair the next day . . .

*I saw that my bangs where entirely uneven. -1 star.

I laughed incredulously at the mirror. She was obviously distracted when cutting my hair but this was hard to justify. One end went slightly over my eyebrow while the other end left a quarter inch of bare skin  above the brow. I have not tried any of the other stylists at Remedy and will not bother.

About two weeks ago, I came to Remedy after some appointment snafus with both Peter Thomas and Blow.

It was late Saturday afternoon, and I walked into Remedy to ask when they had an appointment next. Melanie was there, and told me if I was willing to wait about 30 minutes she could do it then.

My goodness, I can't exaggerate when I say this is the best haircut I've ever had.

I have long, curly hair that's really a part of my look, and she brought it back to life. Like most curly-haired girls, my front layers/bangs tend to flatten and straighten out throughout the day. Somehow, without taking a lot of length out of them, they're curlier than ever. I don't even know exactly what she did, but my hair has more curl, more definition, and more body than it did before. Melanie knew exactly what she was doing, and gave me a lot of tips since she also has long curly hair. She was super nice too!

It must have been fate that I didn't get into the other salons. Thank you MELANIE!

I've been with Monica from when she was at Blow to Alexander Pope and now Remedy.  She knows and understands my hair...end of story. It is so hard to find a stylist that understands how your hair grows and the proper length. The best staff too. Sure its quite pricey for a mans cut, but every time I leave I feel like a rock star. Nuff said.

Love, love, love my haircut and new color!!

Zulma did me right!!

Loved her consultation. Loved that she made solid recommendations.  Loved that she had great execution and I look adorable.

I am new to short hair- and was not "in love" with my first and most recent short cut from another extremely heralded salon! I came to Remedy based on yelp reviews mostly from disgruntled reviewers of my previous salon. Yelp-ers did not disappoint.

I will definitely go back for Zulma and happily recommend her.

Yelp can be a scary thing.

Not for us Yelpers who review with reckless abandon on occasion; us Yelpers who often times compromise the integrity of a business just so we can share a silly anecdote from our lives, but to the actual businesses, who a few years ago were blind-sided by a fast-growing community of loud mouths, like myself.

But us Yelpers are afraid of things too. We're afraid of an expensive cocktail, distant servers, entitled bouncers, bad food, and perhaps worst of all, shitty shitty haircuts.

No one wants to walk around looking like Garth post Suck Kut. So we research stylists and gather recommendations and hope and pray we'll leave that special chair looking like a super model without the height, the body, the substance abuse problem, or the face.

My last haircut (bang trim) was a disaster, leaving me with a quivery lip and new stash of barrettes. I wanted to make sure that the next time I needed a haircut, I found the right stylist who would listen to me and make feel comfortable and ultimately beautiful, or at least not like a Mormon teenager.

I've found that comfort and peace of mind (covered in hair) in Melanie.

She immediately comes off as smart, quick and knowledgeable and puts you at ease by taking the time to chat about your hopes and dreams for your hair before waving the scissors in front of your face.

She's efficient, but doesn't work like a whirling dervish, giving you a chance to express any concerns or suggestions.

I've been bouncing around from stylist to stylist for about five years, trying to find that place you feel the warm fuzzies; where you can kick back and relax, knowing that your fringe is in good hands.

My locks feel appreciated with Melanie, they feel a little excited about meeting someone new, and a little curious about what magic she can work in the future. The lock's have good butterflies and predict that they won't be crying in the corner at work after a date with Melanie.

Considering my best idea of a haircut is... no hair at all, Wendy at Remedy has just proven once again that she's an expert with whacked out brillo cavewoman hair that contains four or five different climates depending on which part of the head you examine. Now people aren't eyeing me like "Ooo, hey other side of the sidewalk, Crazy Hair Lady there we go, right on." I am grossly inarticulate about what I want my hair to look like, so I ceded control to Wendy and she actually gave me a cut that... looks like me, but is so not something I could have ever created or ordained myself.  And, duh, that's why we go to the professionals, but I've had experiences where the ideas of the artist were imposed on my head, gahh, etc. Not so with Wendy.

In addition to creative and artful hairstyling, Wendy is also a handy dandy spirit guide who reads my social ambivalence at even being inside a hair salon and creates a vibe that is fantastically void of stress and pretension. The space has great light, great parking (on a Sunday), a welcoming staff and an animal who really fools you into thinking its not real by staying verrryyy stillll. Nice.

I have been wanting to write this review for a month now and I am finally getting around to doing it. I hadn't cut my hair in about a year when I decided it was high time to get it back into shape. I had read good reviews on yelp so I decided to take the plunge and get a $60 haircut. I hate paying this much for a cut, but I figured since I had been skimping on those $15 trims I should have been getting all year I deserved. I made an appointment with Anjela who had a special on the internet going. She was great! She listened to everything I said and gave me a wonderful cut that I can just get out of the shower and leave the house with. She is amazing! 5 stars baby

I went for my second hair cut with Lona yesterday and the first time she did my highlights as well. I have been very happy with Lona and my hair looked great both times.  I read the reviews on here and the exact words that snared me were "she works her magic with the scissors", or something to that effect and the words do ring true. What's nice about her also is that she tells me what likely will and won't work with my hair, so that I don't hate styling my hair after it's cut. She does color well too, toning my hair down a bit from being too brassy and blond. So far, great results and lots of hair compliments!!
The salon is conveniently located, it's easy to find parking and I have found the staff at the reception desk very friendly and professional. I also like the vibe as it is also an art gallery.

I've followed Anjela to and fro... like a little girl in a yellow polka dotted dress follows a trail of unicorns. Know what I mean? Well, I mean it's magical.

The skinny: Anjela makes my hair white. Do you know how hard it is to make hair white? Well, think about all those blondes out there that bleach their hair, with attempts to look like Gwen Stefani, an avatar, or say, a magical unicorn, and come out looking like they just drove out of the trailer park in an '85 Firebird that is crying for a new paint job... complete with a head full of yellow straw. Other than being attacked by a flock (?) of unruly jellyfish, that may be my biggest fear...

Anjela saves me from that fear.

As for the salon, it's in a convenient location, there's plenty of parking, and they have rotating shows that feature local artists. But my favorite part, coming from the design snob that I am, is their logo. If it wasn't so weird, I'd frame their business card and hang it on my wall. I mean, seriously? Turquoise bobby pins??! I'm sold.

Great place, friendly staff, free cookies, tea and coffee.

The salon is light and airy, with a calm, but mildly festive atmosphere.

There's usually fun art on the walls, top-notch hair products for sale, and enough stations, waxers and hairdressers for you to get an appt when needed.

LONA! She has been cutting my hair for years now.  And I can say that without a doubt, she is truly gifted and talented with the shears.

I live and work in San Francisco but will still travel to the East Bay to have Lona cut my hair - I just love her cuts and love the opportunity to chat with her during the cut.  She is very personable, easy to talk to, and hilarious.

She gets exactly what I am talking about whenever I describe what I want done to my hair, and beyond that, she totally understands how to work with my hair texture. Not straight, not curly, sorta wavy - she finds a way to layer my long hair just so to make my waves look absolutely gorgeous.  She can make my hair look edgy and sophisticated at the same time and  texturize my layers so they give me just the right amount of volume and definition.  My cuts always grow out nicely, and if I actually make it in to have her trim my bangs in between, they always look fabulous too.

Not even exaggerating, not a day goes by that I won't get at least one compliment on my hair. Seriously.

Wonderful. Friendly and down to earth and great curl skills and awesome ability to translate the cut idea you can't really articulate into a great style. Awesome queergirl solidarity and great cuts, without an insistence on what you don't want and can't afford. I love Madusalon for my curls, but when the travel time across the bridge got to be too much, I looked through Yelp, found Dani and Remedy and am very, very happy with my sexy, cared for curls.

I've followed Monica from Blow to Alexander Pope and now to Remedy. And I have to say that this has been the BEST place so far. Wide-open spaces and quiet, individual stations make for an intimate experience that's better than anything else.

I recently decided to lose a lot of length for summer and was worried about how it would turn out, but I should have known better. Monica and I rummaged through a couple of magazines and talked it over before I just let her have at it. Needless to say, my faith was rewarded with (another) awesome cut and I couldn't be happier. Thanks, Monica!

I have worked for a non-profit for years, so my checkbook made me a long-time fan of the home dye job and a monthly visit to Supercuts. Until, of course, I accidentally colored my blonde locks fudgesicle brown and my better instincts told me to skimp somewhere else and seek expert professional help, STAT.

Enter Remedy's Monica, my hair savior.   She's friendly, engaging and nothing short of a miracle worker.  She repaired my color eff up and gave me such a great cut that I've been a loyal customer ever since.  I have hair that few can tame -  straight and fine with a few unruly cow-licks and a complicated layered thing going on.  Yet when I leave Monica I have the sassiest do and  the best, most natural color ever.  I get complimented all the time on my super cute hair.  Heck, I'm kind of upset that I didn't mess up my do sooner.

Street parking is plentiful and free and the salon is so pretty.  The place also has a really good mix of clientele, which tells me lots of folks find it to be swell.

Thanks Karen for reading my mind and giving me the haircut I would never have been able to describe. It's so rare that stylists can read personality, face/body shape, and hair type to give a style so well matched to the client-- you did a great job. I couldn't be happier & I want it to stop growing so I can keep it for a while ;)
The salon is easy to get to from 80 or San Pablo, easy parking, no attitude, nice environment, the ideal hair salon, imo- nice enough to feel fancy but none of the chi chi bs.

So I totally cheated on my hairstylist with Melanie at Remedy. Nothing against my "usual" - it started out as a simple matter of location. I work in Emeryville and prefer to get my hair cut during work... I feel like I'm sticking it to the man. (woot!)

But, now I have a real problem. I think I love Melanie.  The cut was amazing. Not a total 180 degree turn around from when I walked in... but she did something very few stylists do: she listened to me. She took her time. She checked in throughout the cut to be sure I was still on board.

I left a few inches lighter, a few bucks poorer, but much, much happier! Thanks, Melanie!

Anjela does an awesome job on my hair. I showed her some random picture of a haircut and she recreated it flawlessly.  She also does a great job at hair color, I'm totally satisfied with it.  One major thing that I loved was that no one tried to sell me products, they did exactly what I asked for and nothing else.  (It drives me nuts when people use something new on my hair every time just so they can talk about it after my hair is done and try to get me to blow $50+ on a hair creme.)  To top it off, there's a poofy dog and delicious cookies sitting out.  How awesome is that?

I went to Remedy after finding it on Yelp. I was booked with Wendy and she did a fantastic job. She was fun to talk to and she cut my flat, fine hair just the right way. It actually looks like it has some life now.

The salon is super cute and very welcoming. My only, tiny gripe is that no one offered me anything to drink. I like refreshments!

Oh well, I'll still totally go back. Maybe next time I'll just ask for something to drink.

Having come from a salon in SF that specializes in curly hair, I was carefully searching for a good fit in the East Bay. As those of us with naturally curly hair know, it's hard to find the perfect hairdresser who understands curly hair and the care it needs. Remedy turned out to be my, well, remedy. Lona has given me several styles, all well cut and easy to manage. And I enjoy my time with her- conversational as you want her to be, but she is totally able to focus on her work. Plus they are kid and dog friendly! And on top of all that, the front staff recently worked really hard to find me a cancellation or an open spot when I needed to come in last minute. Great vibe, great service means they get my business for sure.

Lona is so awesome.  My hair color and cut both look amazing and I couldn't be happier with my experience at Remedy. I can't wait to go back!!!

Let me just say that having moved up to the Bay Area a couple years ago, I have been on a desperate hunt for a decent salon in the East Bay.  I've searched all over... Berkeley, N. Berkeley, Oakland, Oakland Hills, Walnut Creek, Albany........ but out of all those places, Monica here at Remedy has done the BEST job.  Moreover, she's super nice and super friendly and really listens to exactly what you want or what style you are looking for.  She's also really good at understanding the health of your hair and advising you according to your own hair habits and products (she doesn't PUSH you to buy Remedy's products, which is like a breath of fresh air).

This place is awesome.  Everyone should come here.

Anjela cut my hair to perfection.... she did exactly what I wanted...I brought in the teeny tiniest montage of pictures of the cheesy ass blond girl from the Pussy Cat Dolls (hate the group... love her hair)... Anjela managed to work with the pics I gave her and gave me my very own version of the cut...Anjela was mellow, easy going and basically just a cool ass chick. The space is awesome.... exposed brick wall.... airy loft feel.... ...adorable neighborhood....and cute fluff ball mascot named peaches. I might try color next time... two of the stylists in there had drool worthy purple chunks in there hair....  MMMMMmmmmm purple~

This review is for Wendy.

I could've cut my own hair better blindfolded with a pair of toe nail clippers. NO. I am not exaggerating. I brought in a PICTURE of exactly what I wanted my hair cut to look like, mind you it was EASY long layers, whatevers, and she STILL managed to jack up my hair. I have easy to cut hair too! It's that stick straight Asian hair! Ok so... I've had my hair long, like Cousin It long for as long as I can remember and I decided to go to Remedy cause it's right by my house and it had such good reviews. Little did I know I would come out of there scarred for life. Let me explain... I told her I wanted to keep my hair LONG, like in the picture that is right in front of your face (right below the bra strap). She reassures me by talking about her years of experience and whatnot and she seems nice as we chat about tattoos. Suddenly my head feels 10 lbs lighter and I see 10 inch chunks of hair falling off. I see how short it is (WAY above the bra strap, as in barely brushing my shoulders!) and she tells me, "Don't worry, that's just one of the layers". I am freaking the fuck out but she's supposedly been doing this shit for like 20 years or some shit. Yeah. She's old. But funky with tattoos and colored hair. Anyways... to say the least, I walked out of there with completely butchered hair that looked like a cross between a mullet and Jim Carrey's hair on Dumb and Dumber (she gave me a little chunk of bangs that fell an inch above my eyebrows!!!) How did she fuck me up so bad? She was staring at a god damn picture of what I wanted the whole time!!! Maybe the other hair stylists are better, but I'd rather cut my own hair, with toe nail clippers, than go back to Wendy.

Sidenote: It has been almost TWO months and my hair is STILL jacked up. I'm a hideous monster. All thanks to Wendy.
