a one and a half hour wait at the clinton st baking company drove me here. i walked by it on my way over and was immediately drawn in by its old school charm, but walked past it in order to meet my siblings for pancakes.
a wait that long, you can eat somewhere else, and i was starving. let's just start with a snack.
calamari isn't usual diner fare, but i was glad to find it on the menu. much to my surprise, when the waitress brought over my plate, it was stacked plentiful with rings of squid. yum.
and the waitress was happy to bring me extra lemons (and not just one tiny wedge).
speedy service, solid, hearty food, and a charming decor will certainly bring me back here next time i'm in the lower east side.
the sad thing? this place is overshadowed by other tiny breakfast places in the LES. as a 24-hour location, however, i might find myself dropping by sooner than a think.
Granted, this is my first yelp review and only because I couldn't believe the many negative reviews.
I live close by and eat at least twice a month at the Remedy Diner. We also always bring out of town or country guests, who want to explore an American Diner.
The decor is great, with lots of booth and interesting fixtures. And it's not a "little Diner" since it's actually rather big with a long bar and a nice long window front.
The menu is gigantic and offers all the usual staples. Their daily changing menu is particularly interesting since it often contains gems.
What are the other reviewers complain about?!
A soup, a salad, bread basket, an entree for less than 15 bucks? And it still tastes good?!
It's a DINER and not a fancy chef restaurant but for a Diner this is as good as it gets! Hence, my 5 star rating!
The wait staff is very friendly and accommodating, and so are the host/hostess. When on the Lower East Side and in the mood for a true Diner go here!
Visited Remedy during an intermission between lounges. I ordered the Chicken Farfalle. It was a little on the salty side, but then I have an aversion to sodium. But I digress... The service was fine, but I would've appreciated not being sat next to the kitchen.
It's a decent little diner, open fairly late and in walking distance of some decent lounges and bars. The rest of my party seemed content with their orders. I just couldn't believe how sleepy everyone got after we ate. It was obvious who was single and who wasn't. All the married/pseud-married guys were glassy-eyed and I was full of energy, ready for business.
I would eat here again if I was in the area, but I wouldn't make it a destination. There are many more greasy spoon joints in LES and Alphabet City that are worth your while.
Not necessarily the cure...
Sinfully good 4 cheese French omelet. Came here for an early brunch last Sunday, the waiter was super nice and the food was brought with a smile. Atmosphere was calm. Coffee hit the spot and the bathroom was spotless. Loved it, as a first timer this diner is a few blocks from my home and definitely a second shot diner. i usually hate diners, this one was an exception. Thanks so much!
The really nice art deco interior decor can only keep me distracted from the hunger pangs and poor service for so long.
My boyfriend orders his sandwich and the waitresses presses him for any type of side she can think of. Having the 'I Have To Please Everyone' curse, he says fine to the gravy fries... event though he doesn't really like fries. If he'd wanted gravy fries, don't you think he would have ordered them? We had 20 mins to look over the menu, we knew what was on there...
The food doesn't take forever, but if they somehow could have taken an extra 5 minutes to improve food quality, I wouldn't complain.
The gravy fries arrive with a slice of once-melted-now-solidified American cheese over them and some room temp gravy.
It's hard to mess up a grilled cheese, there was a bit too much cheese in it, but I'll chalk that up to me being picky. It wasn't soggy, so I appreciate that. However, I've never seen corned beef hash quite the texture of what I got here. It was like corned beef pudding with peppers and chunks of potatoes. Being a hung over Irish girl, I take my corned beef very seriously.
Aaanyways, that was the 4th or 5th time I'd been there, I've never been satisfied, I gave it it's last shot, and I don't think I'll be returning.
Stopped in on a Thursday afternoon and the place was relatively empty. Pretty good food, although my salad was not very tasty at all. They serve breakfast all day and had a pretty good selection of desserts (they looked store-bought).
The only thing this place is good for is dessert and milkshakes. I had a delicious waffle sundae here and my boyfriend really loves their chocolate milkshakes. However, the food is not good. I had possibly one of the worst omelets I have ever had here. The hot chocolate I ordered came in what can only be described as a shot glass and the juice I ordered was maybe crystal light mixed with lukewarm water. Mmmm just what I wanted! (sense the sarcasm). You are surrounded by such great little, inexpensive places in the neighborhood - go to one of them!
When this place first opened the deliveries took forever! The food showed up cold and was a little more then my regular diner. The dine in experience is much better. Pretty good food and you pay for it. Its not the bargain diner I was hoping for.
I really like this place. You can get giant pancakes for like 7 bucks. Seriously, I've never been able to finish them. Great for some quick cheap diner food.
I LOVE AND ADORE this diner! It's clean, the service was excellent and the employees were so nice and the food is wonderful and HUGE portions. I will be eating this Chef Salad for 3 meals!! LOVE IT!
The desserts look fabulous, too! The roomie and I will have to try one of them the next time we stop in.
I can't get over the fact that I pass by this place almost every day and have never walked inside. The truth is that yelp had so many bad reviews, I chose to avoid it. But then I decided I am going to test it out for myself, forget about the yelper.
I am so happy I did because I love love love it. I had breakfast here, two eggs, potatoes, toast and pancakes. Everything was delicious. The hash browns were extra well done, which is the best and the pancakes were so light and sweet, it was really really good.
I came back the next day to try the other food, and I had the nachos which were bangin as well as the burgers and fries. I have the remedy burger which had sauteed onions and Russian dressing and it was mmmmm good. The service here is also really good, and they are open 24/7. I am totally coming back here all the time.
Give this diner a chance!!!!
My good friends Tony Mann and Dava She Wolf turned me on to this place (as they have several times with other places), which has cheaper prices than even a Mel's Diner in SF or LA, and it's in a perfect spot on Houston in the East Village. Open 24/7, this awesome diner has a wide variety of delicious comestibles, and a patient and friendly staff.
Surprisingly, the place, while active, isn't too slammed or too noisy, and doesn't take long to get the food out from the kitchen.
The food is good, standard diner fare, which is to be expected, and the crowd is a mix of tourists and locals who are looking for a bite after hitting the clubs all night. I like being able to get a decent meal at a decent price, and be able to chat with friends who might be there with me.
I'll be back next time I hit my old hometown for sure.
My friend came back from Paris and was craving diner food. I was the victim that he dragged to Remedy with him.
I love diners, I love places that are open at 3 am, I love breakfast all the time, I love milkshakes.
Remedy had all of this, and I still didn't like this place.
I ordered a veggie burger with blue cheese and avocado and my friend ordered a regular burger with cheese. The burgers are HUGE seriously disturbing how much food you'll receive. It wasn't even that the burger was that bad, it was just the sheer amount of food waste I probably racked up here.
Also, the waiters are really creepy and greasy. I paid with my credit card for the two of us, and the waiter was so shocked that a woman was taking a man out...how ridiculous.
I really want this place to be good, since it's 24 hours and close to my apartment, but it's not. The decor is good, and the people are friendly, but the food is blah. The prices are a notch higher than "diner," but the quality is definitely not. For example, the soup tastes like it comes out of a can. If you're going to be charging high prices, use high-quality ingredients.
Your typical diner spot. I've dined in and ordered delivery. The food is unremarkable but dependable. And I have a soft spot for 24 hours joints.
We went to Remedy last weekend frankly because we weren't willing to brave the two hour wait at Clinton St. (I'm still cursing myself for forgetting to set my alarm so we could get there when it opened.)
Okay, here's the deal: If you're really a breakfast snob (like moi) and really would herd cats for hours just for the Southern plate at C.S., you will be let down at Remedy.
I repeat, you will be let down.
That said, meh. It's not terrible. Good service, plenty of seating, decent menu selection, zero wait, nice cool a/c, and free cookies when you walk in the door. :)
The downside? The food is JUST OKAY. I had a greek omelet and it was overcooked and WAY too big (I'm one of those people who really pushes myself to clean my plate and even I couldn't do it).
One thing I did like was the hashed potatoes. Mmm all chopped up and browned and yummy. But the side of bacon was like $4 for like 4 slices of very meh bacon.
Stick it out and wait for Clinton Street.
Ahh, The Remedy. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. I go often around 2am after hanging out in the Lower East Side and looking for breakfast, and sometimes on the weekend if Clinton Bakery is packed (as always). It's definitely not a place where I'd want to pencil in for the sake of wanting to go there, but more of the place that is convenient for me. Actually, come to think of it, I think the only reason I go back is only because of convenience. The food is OK, and the staff is nice by default (they have to be, no?). The food fills the stomach, and that's about it. 2 stars for clean tables and chairs, decent breakfast, open at all hours. I'd stay away from the Steak and Eggs though, at $13.95, I think I'd rather get some pancakes, eggs, and a milkshake :)
Hope this helps,
D
The remodel was extensive and I couldn't wait to eat at this cool looking neighborhood diner. I went with some neighbors and and I have to say it was the worst food experience I've had in ny. The food was HORRIBLE, no value for money here. I would have rather spent 15 bucks at Schillers! Something was off, but I was starving and it was cooked...so i ate it anyway...wrong and stupid choice. I will never go back, the service is weird, it's just not what I was hoping for in a diner and I'm sad it's in my hood taking up valuable space.
The food here is pretty delicious, although you can easily find better deals off of Houston if you look a little more. The service here is subpar, usually the waitstaff mostly ignores you and takes a very long time to get your order and is rude about it and non-apologetic. Not to be a negative nancy, but I grew up in the Midwest and if I'm paying over $10 for a meal I'd rather not get a kick in the pants with it! Otherwise, the food is really great and they even have some healthy options too. I'd recommend the scallops.
Great cheesecake and good typical diner food.
Downside? Creepy old waiter who whispers, "You're beautiful..." (Crypt Keeper tone) right behind you, while you're on the way to the restroom and slips you his number with the check. And he wasn't even my waiter.
Dude, I'm there for greasy diner food, not greasy old men.
Well, there's one good thing about this diner. It's properly named. Consider the title "Remedy" a sign my friends. Because it's going to be what you will be in search of once you're out of that restaurant. Or non-restaurant.
Hungry? Hungover? Please walk a little further.
I wanted fries, I wanted a "Tex Mex" burger. Not something I could have made with Fisher-Price play food, my buttocks, and a butter knife.
The "cheese fries" appear to have been constructed with generic cheese singles that were sloppily placed over fries and thrown savagely into a microwave. I may have swallowed plastic here.
And I am almost certain my "burger" was not a burger at all, but perhaps a cardboard cut-out (however it WAS thick) of something drawn with crayons in a 1st-grade classroom.
To top this burger off, I tasted nothing but grease and, I think, Elmer's glue.
Yes, my friends, this place tastes like the remnants of a lonely garage can at an arts and crafts show.
I have never eaten anything healthy here.
I think it's because I've only been here wasted.
I will come here when friends at the bar say,"WE'RE HUNGRY."
I love it when someone in my group orders way too much fried food.
I usually can't finish my chocolate pancakes or western omelette.
I want to be in bed when I'm done eating.
I am going to get pizza if this place is crowded.
I like diners. I like the simplicity and the comfort, and the ridiculously stuffed menu.
So, I came here this past Friday morning, because my morning engagement was suddenly cancelled... I live in Brooklyn... why else would I be wandering around the LES at 9:45am?
Good diner. It's better than say, Cozy Soup and Burger, or Around the Clock. I felt totally comfortable by myself, and it was mod and clean. I didn't feel like I was sitting where some guy sat (and passed gas) 40 years ago.
They have "breakfast specials." For $8, I got bottomless coffee, a small orange juice, two eggs, toast, home fries, and bacon. Not too shabby (hey, it's the city. I don't live in MS where I can get all that for $2.50). The home fries were a standout, which was surprising because they don't look like anything special.
I'd come again with a book. Or people. Whatever.
I didn't need a 24-hour diner, but I liked the option. At first I wasn't going to go in here because I was looking for something low-key, and this place looked a little too fancy from the outside. But I stopped and looked at the menu in the window and saw that the prices were good, so I decided to venture in.
It's a wonderful mishmash of looks - shiny new mixed with retro, clean and stylish blended with old school diner-y goodness.
The clientele on a Sunday morning was just as varied - families, single diners, young hipster couples, the list goes on and on.
The food was OK, not great, but not bad either. For a total of $7.50 I got 2 eggs, 3 slices of bacon, 2 pieces of rye, a lump of fried potatoes and a coffee. And it was out with such speed I almost didn't believe it. It took the waitress longer to come over to my table and take my order than it did for the actual food to be made and served.
With so many places to try in the next month, I may not go back to the Remedy Diner, but I wouldn't be opposed to going again.
Sadly my only visits to Remedy Diner have been in the early morning hours in a somewhat inebriated state so my review lacks specifics but I've had a good experience every time.
Remedy Diner gets the job done. For post-drinking, post-dancing eggs and bacon, Remedy is the place to go. The fact that it's located in the LES around the corner from several of our favorite dance spots and that it's open 24 hours a day (or close to it) gives it 3 stars already. Add the 4th star for great, quick, accurate service.
One night we decided to venture to another diner only to end up waiting an hour for service and another half hour for our food -- not cool. Another night I was with a different group of friends wandering the streets looking for it (and rudely texted my friend who was asleep at home asking where "Comfort Diner" was) and ended up getting a soggy pizza slice instead. It was after these experiences that I realized my true feelings for Remedy Diner -- and even programmed the address into my phone for future reference. Looking forward to my next trip!
Can I have some Remedy?
All I want is a Remedy.
Remedy for me, please.
These Black Crowes lyrics don't really apply to the Remedy Diner, mostly because Remedy is not all I want. But I really like that song.
The people watching here is TOP NOTCH. I'm talking full-on pimp suits, drunk hipsters falling on their faces, hilarious catfights (over KETCHUP), and enormous women in tiny outfits that leave nothing to the imagination.*
As far as the food is concerned...eh.
Now, I usually go to diners by default. When you live in the suburbs, and you get drunk until the wee hours of the morn, you don't have that many food options. The diner's basically it. So if you don't like the diner food, there's nothing you can do about it.
They always have a gigantic menu, and as is the case with huge menus, all the items on it are mediocre at best. There is only so much quality to be had at an establishment, and diners tend to spread it very thinly across so many items.
Sadly for Remedy, we are in NYC. Theoretically, this city never sleeps. Like many a suburban diner, Remedy's food sucks. However, they don't have a monopoly on 4 am meals around here.
I can't think of a single thing that I would order at Remedy that wouldn't be tastier at 7A, Gracefully (2nd and A), Adinah's (2nd and C), or the pizza joint at 4B. All of which are open 24/7. So I don't go here very often. You shouldn't either.
*When I say they "leave nothing to the imagination," it's not so much that you can see every inch of their bodies (even though you can), it's more that my imagination no longer works because of the horrific images that have been seared into my brain.
It's kind of a tradition with the wife and stepsons that we go out to eat at a diner when we go buy the xmas tree. That's how we ended up at the Remedy at 8PM on a Friday night. Not to many people there; it seems more like a morning and late night spot. Nonetheless, it satisfied us just fine: reasonably priced typical diner fare: too salty, too greasy, but exactly what you'd expect from one look at the place. Generous portions.
Nothing special about this place aside from the service, which was very good: water glasses refilled several times, waiter brought extras (mustard and mayo) to the table promptly when asked, cheerful demeanor... not much more can one ask of diner service.
The bill for five (before tip, but including a couple beers) was under $70. Not bad.
I'm not a diner guy, but would recommend Remedy to someone looking for the typical diner thing on the Lower East Side. Here it is!
A 24 hour hunger life vest on the LES. I have been for breakfast, lunch and late dinner and every time the food has been great. I stick to things I know will be good at a diner and it always lives up to my expectations.
Burgers are great. They have a superior turkey burger as well. Breakfast was all very good - eggs, hash browns, egg sandwich, waffles. This place is kid accessible and has a great diner atmosphere. Service is always good and prices are great for how much food you get. I have even had a turkey dinner which was reminiscent of a small Thanksgiving with all the fixings.
Cokes are less bubbly and more syrupy like a true diner.
Added: If you are looking for home cooking, try the turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes, it can do no wrong. Also, tested out one of their desserts the other night, chocolate pie, just the perfect blend of mousse middle with crust.
Anytime, any meal, Remedy is there and is really good.
My friend Mingey took me here, the food is good, i got the whatever its called- french toast with honey ham and real! turkey melted swiss and raspberry jelly mmm mmm the plate you get is so huge don't attempt to eat in one sitting I ate half of it but the food is so heavy my belly hurts now I'm so stuffed and so sleepy.
I only came here because I was drunk and was too tired to walk down to even Ray's pizza to get a slice. So I came and settled for a burger and pie. The blueberry pie was microwaved and probably store bought. The burger wasn't too bad! I had drunk munchies to be honest, but it's a sad place to be. Not a single smiling face in the whole place. YIKES
Nothing was bad quality. Grilled calamari was quite good, everything else was mediocre.
The baked ziti is supposed to be one of the best things they've got. It has lots of cheese, but the sauce is out of a jar and there's nothing but noodles, sauce, and cheese (just mozzerella, no extra cheese). 2-star dish.
Pasta in white clam sauce had very little garlic. Garlic makes the dish. Clams were fresh. 3-star dish.
Tuna melt was chilled, which is strange. Chilled melted cheese is somewhat dysfunctional. 2-star dish.
The grilled calamari app was 5-star. Hence the average 3-star rating.
Service was nice, no complaints. They aren't 24-hours, the rule of a good diner, so they get 4-stars on service.
And the decor, the atmosphere - excellent. Felt like a diner on the california beach front in the 1940's. Gotta love it.
Waffle fan here. Get it with strawberries and whip cream, and some oj.
Breakfast of champions.
We came here for dessert after Bereket...
Loved the place itself, very well designed. The bathrooms, the blinds, the neon, the counter, the floor tiles.
I imagine being in Back to the Future in this diner, it was just great...so clean, so kitchy, so new yet so old at the same time.
I got a DELICIOUS banana split.
-Strawberry scoop, choco scoop, vanilla scoop
-banana
-whipped cream, chocolate syrup...usual stuff bla bla bla
What makes the difference?
-the walnuts in syrup
-the strawberry sauce and pineapple marmelade that goes on it...
They take care to put it together well.
I haven't ordered the food but it looks delicious.
Order to food time is good.
I've been here twice and both times I've liked the layout, the space, the service and disliked the food.
Once was a frozen turkey patty (not quite thawed) and the other was turkey breakfast sausage that was so salty it was inedible. Also, the coffee was very acidic and low quality.
Maybe I just haven't found what they are good at yet but I'll leave that to other diners to remedy...get it?
I don't expect much from diners. They normally are quite shitty when it comes to food overall. Basically it's a place to come eat whenever you're hungry and basically order whatever you're in the mood for. So when it's comes down to it... I'm looking for awesome service, unique things to set their food apart from other diners and cheapness. This place has non of that. Well their cheap I guess, so they have that.
Shit where to begin.
Egg's over easy, came out fried.
Bacon ordered Crispy, came out barely cooked.
Iced Mocha with an extra shot, came out and tasted like chocolate milk.
The waitress was nice, and at first, really attentive, after we got our food I didn't see her again until we got our check (which took forever to get.) I don't know, this place gets good reviews from other Yelpers, maybe I just got them at a bad time. Who knows maybe one day I'll give em' another chance.
As good as a diner can get. It's a place to go if you are with a group of people who can't decide what they want to eat or you just need a place to go to. It's not the kind of place my stomach screams for. I ordered the lunch special - beet and goat cheese salad. The greens were too warm and wilted. Typical diner fare, nothing more.
i am usually here between the hours of 2-4:30 a.m. when all i eat is either appetizers or ice cream sundaes and i hardly remember anything. the service is slow and i usually know it's time to pay the bill because i decide that putting my head down on the table to close my eyes, just for a minute! is a good idea.
the appeal of the remedy diner is not the food as much as it is the hooker watching.
i don't think street corner girls are in here as much as the call girl type is. they're easy to spot. you'll see a table covered in empty plates of shrimp cocktail, salad plates, soup cups, the little oil & vinegar caddy, and then a platter of steak & french fries, and an obese lady in a blonde wig wearing hot pink lycra is licking her fingers suggestively at the poor old schmuck who paid for her company. this woman usually resembles jamie foxx's character Wanda from in living color.
seeing Wanda suck shrimp grease off her fingers in an "ima suck yo' dick in a minute" fashion is well worth the stomach ache i usually have the morning after i eat here drunk.
If you're looking for a typical diner in the area, this is the best you can do. Diner food at diner prices.
The worst salad of my life.
I stopped into Remedy Diner when I was in search of a nice salad and an iced tea on a hot day. I was impressed with how clean the diner was and with the friendly service. But my experience went downhill from there. The iced tea wasn't great - it tasted like it had been brewed maybe a day or two earlier. When my salad arrived, I found that the lettuce was old and slimy. I tried to eat around it, but there was just too much. I honestly have never sent a dish back in a restaurant in my life, but I had to send this salad back. The worst part was that the server didn't really see the lettuce as being a problem. His explanation was that the lettuce was organic. I guess to him organic = slimy. But he obliged and brought me a new salad, or a doctored version of my first salad. It was a slight improvement but still slimy on the bottom. I picked around it and did my best, but this lunch ended up being completely unsatisfactory on almost every level. I will not be back.
Cute little place -- I really loved the atmosphere. Everything was laminate wood -- but tasteful! I never knew that could actually work.
A friend and I went for brunch. I had the French Toast and Eggs with hot tea. It was delicious, came out very fast (granted it wasn't really that busy -- noon on a Saturday), and inexpensive. $10 for everything.
One thing I will say is that my waiter was not the kind to check up on us. We had to call him over if we needed anything. He definitely kept his eye out though.
