Dear Reid Park Polar Bear,
First of all, I am a tremendous fan. I have carried your image with me for years now- your worn yellowish coat, your beautiful bulk lopsided and motionless in the corner of your cage. You were pretty much the living avatar of 'I Am A Long Ways From Home & Very Lonely.'
I remember watching your chest rise and fall so fast, so fast.
Anyhow, I hope you are well. I like to imagine you inbetween exhibitions, safely ensconed somewhere with deep-chill air conditioning and buckets of your favorite seal entrails. Also, a team of loving and dedicated zoologists who rub you down and whisper words of strong encouragement in your ear.
You are doing a phenomenal job. When I most recently visited you, there were kids from Mexico who'd driven all night to see your magnificence. There were people from Hawaii absolutely staggered.
Stay cool,
AU

Reid Park is at least better than the Honolulu zoo.
This zoo is small. You can cover every square inch of visiting space and look at everything intensely in under two hours. They have basic wild animals, lions, bears, giraffes, zebras. I caught the zebras having sex http://www.yelp.com/bi....
There is one wow factor. The polar bear. He was the reason for my visit.
There are two food options, and both are on http://restaurant.com, both are snack food stands but offer enough to make an unhealthy lunch.

It's so effing small. And they don't have that many animals. The polar bear wasn't out when I came in. I waited and waited and they didn't put him out.
Five stars because it's a zoo and zoo's need money and people go to zoo's if they have a lot of stars.

Reid Park Zoo = totally worth it. This is not the San Diego Zoo by any means. You can see the whole place in two hours. But come on, admission is six bucks! Two bucks for kids!
I remember this place from 20 years ago as being hot, ramshackle, smelling of monkey crap, and for some reason a place where you could ride on a giant tortoise (that seems illegal, maybe I dreamt that up). Reid Park Zoo has somehow transformed itself into a little zoo-ey oasis. You've got a good view of the animals in 90% of the exhibits. The tree-shaded zoo paths are narrow and twisty - it's a fun little maze to work through. They have an amazing splashy cool-off area for the kiddos and a million benches for the old folks. The bathrooms have fun facts about animal poop posted in them! How could you not love this place?
The zoo train is a rip (it doesn't go around the zoo, only the park, and it's not even a real train!) - all else is good here. Even the polar bear looks pretty happy.

Best zoo I've ever been to!
It's small enough, but big enough. You can spend about two hours here and see everything. We've been three times and have been virtually the only people in the park.
The animals are so close, it's really amazing. It almost seems wrong to be so close to them. There are peacocks that wander freely around the zoo. I suggest not wearing a blue-green dress. They tend to be curious and will follow you and completely freak you out.
Food isn't too expensive, but it's best to get a drink or an ice cream and eat on the way home.
Buy the zoo key for $2. The kids have a blast running to the boxes and turning them on (even if they don't listen to the info, it gives them something to do).
The bird enclosure is crazy. If you love birds, go in and be amazed. If you hate birds, like me, don't. You'll end up freaking out and running, possibly trampling an endangered bird or two.

If you have kids, this is one of the best destinations to go to. Granted this is quite possibly the smallest zoo I've ever been to, but it has the main animals you would expect at any major zoo like lions, tiger, bears, birds, giraffe, monkeys, etc..
What I enjoy about this place is that the peacocks run around freely and there is a room where kids can draw and explore (not much to do there, but it's great to relax in a room when it's over 100 degrees outside).
It's not too expensive and they offer discounts for students and military. It's right next to Reid Park too and kids can further run around at the playground.

I've never felt Tucson had a lot to do for kiddos but this place is the exception. I really enjoy the zoo everytime I go!
I love the size. It's not like the time my husband, kids, and I walked the entire San Diego zoo and our fat asses almost died from coronaries. The Reid Park zoo is very easily-laid out and kids don't get overly tired from this zoo walking.
The animal displays are diverse, giving kids a chance to see a lot of different animals. There are enough to spend almost a whole day here, to tire out the kids, and get home to your martini!

What I love most about this zoo is the size. It is big enough to not run out of things to do in 20 minutes and small enough to not have to spend all day here.
We went early enough to feed the giraffes and the kids really enjoyed that. We were there a little over two hours, had a picnic lunch and looked around for about another hour or so. I can't wait until the weather cools off a bit to take the kids again!

It is a good way to get outdoors during good weather. We just went the other day. I posted some picks of the animals. Great for kids and families. They are crawling all over the place. Something good and old fashioned for the kids I suppose to get them outside. Only thing I could wish fo ris that is was bigger with more animals.
This place is very nice when it's not too hot. I enjoy seeing the
park animals here once every few years.
I recommend that if you think you will get hungry then bring a snack
on your own. There are eating tables.

The thing I love most about the zoo is the thing that is the set back of the zoo: the size. It's easy to get around and see the many different animals there, but you hope that they feel like they have enough room in their homes
Cute and the perfect size for a short afternoon with the kids. Feed the giraffes or watch Boris play. It is all good!

I actually loved this zoo. It's the perfect size. Who really wants to walk around a zoo for 8 hours looking at animals hiding in the corner. I highly recommend this overlooked Tucson adventure. The price is very reasonable as well.

Not the best zoo, but once in awhile it is somewhere fun to go in Tucson, where there is practically nothing to do.
We had a good 4 hours to spend in this area and did not know what to do. So decided to go to the park. The animals seemed bored with people and were sitting with their backs towards the visitors. They had a sad expression. It was interesting to see an African elephant in captivity in the same area as an Asian elephant - haven't seen that before. There were lots of peacocks flying around in the open. I saw a Capybara for the first time. Seems its the biggest rodent on earth.

This zoo was great! After going to the San Diego zoo where there is just too much to see, it's hilly and exhibits are a bit outdated, it was very refreshing to spend a few hours here and look at animals in some great looking surroundings. We were lucky, it wasn't hot. The tigers were amazing and I even got growled at. I've never seen rhinos so active and the polar bears were having a blast playing while we were there. We had lunch at the little cafe and their kids meals were animal lunch pails shaped like animal heads (kind of weird to me, but the kids like them) with chips and animal crackers inside and they come with a drink and choice of hot dog, corn dog and PBJ. The train ride was the first thing we did and that got the kids really excited to run around. There is a great little water play area in the middle of the zoo that the kids liked also. if you have kids and you live in Tucson, this is the place to go! There is currently an expansion under construction but it didn't affect our visit.
