For those familiar with REI please skip to the next paragraph. For those who are not, please read on.  :-)
REI is a wonderful co-op for outdoor enthusiasts and is equiped with practically all the gear you need and its close to impossible to enter the store without leaving with something.  Members gets discounts and a dividend at the end of the year.  The store itself provides classes to the public on everything from bike maintenance, kayaking, hiking etc.   Additionally the store organizes various outings for people of similar interests to meet.  Most of the employees are well trained, knowledgable and helpful.  Overall I give the REI company five stars but the Tacoma storefront is a bit different.
In comparison to other local sports shops, the Tacoma REI would be getting FIVE stars but in comparison to OTHER REI stores I gave the Tacoma store 3 stars.   Most REI stores have excellent customer service and attentive staff, and this is where the Tacoma store lacks.
Compared to other stores is it somewhat difficult to find help and when you do find someone the help at times feels more like a sales pitch than a recommendation.  There were afew times I have been there and got no service at all.  Though the manager is very kind and informative, his enthusiasm does not seem to flow towards some of the staff.
I hate to pooh pooh the workers there since they are most likely really good people but the Tacoma REI just seems to lack the energy and welcoming vibe you find at other REIs.
Overall I still love the store and support the people who work there but they need to work on customer service there, a statement that has been shared by many other REI members I spoke with in the area.

I had a good experience shopping at the REI store the handful of times that I did.  The staff know their products and help you determine which product is most suited to your needs.  I received some exceptional service when I was shopping for climbing shoes.  So much so that I not only ended up purchasing those shoes and a REI card, I also wrote a positive review for the service representative that helped me out.

This REI is the closest REI location to my home so I go here most often.  You get a discount for being a member as well as a year-end dividend that is proportionate to the amount of money you spent there over the past year.  I like the reliability of this store and their staff is usually pretty well trained on their products and can answer questions you might have.  A very pleasing experience every time.
