REI is awesome every time we visit. The people working there are soooo helpful and friendly. During our trip today, the guy behind the counter was not friendly, but I'll still give a full 5 stars.

I love that everything is 100% guaranteed at REI. We were upgrading our tent size (since we received the smaller size as a gift) and even though we used it twice, they gladly took it back and gave us store credit towards a bigger one. Being members, you get all kinds of perks throughout the year and once a year you get a dividend return.

Awesome! :)

I seem to be piggybacking off of Ryan Bs reviews today. I keep seeing his reviews and think "I know that place!" Anyways I love REI. I went in for Christmas browsing and since I was an REI member from a previous trip in, I got a sweet 20% off of any item over 100 bucks. I got my luggage for my trip to germany, and I got a great day backpack for going out around the towns over there.

The staff was very helpful with helping me with my big rolling luggage and my backpack. I explained what I was doing and where I was going and they helped recommend me the best equipment for what I needed. Not the most expensive but what I needed. You know you have a good salesperson when they are frank with you and say "you don't want to pay extra money for this one, this is a lot better price and better for what you need." They were patient and friendly. I asked if they had some kind of laptop sleeve to protect my laptop in my backpack, I described it horribly! But the guy nodded and took me right to what I needed. They were awesome.

Then when I get to the checkout with my things the cashier recommended I "sign up a friend" to get another 20% off of my other 100 dollar item. He didn't have to recommend that but he did.

Their stuff is well made and all of it is warrantied for life. If it breaks, bring it in and they'll either fix it or replace it.

Yes, I like to shop here.... not for clothes , but for camping gear and some neat-o accessories. Yes, I said accessories, here's my man card. I got talked into buying their Co-op membership, so hopefully I get a nice discount when I get my bike fixed up here some time soon.

I like the new face of the store front. very... woody than before.

Did you know some cities actually don't have an REI? Oh the Humanity! Great gear: I outfitted exclusively at REI Dallas for my solo Grand Canyon rim-rim and back (5 days, 50 miles) and loved every piece and not one bit of advice on gear selection wasn't spot on. However, being a bike snob, I'd probably head to a 'real' bike shop if I was in the market for wheels.

I'm about to go to my honeymoon (AK cruise and Vancouver) so we decided to go to REI for a windbreaker and some good walking/light hiking shoes.
This place is pretty big and does have a lot of selections. Kind of disorganized but I managed to get what I wanted.
Got a great pair of running/hiking sneakers for about 60 bucks and my hubby got a good windbreaker.
It's a good place to check it out if you're going camping, canoing, hiking, etc.

It's an old REI so it's not the prettiest of stores - but who cares... I got my big ass Lowe Alpine backpack for 80 bucks. I absolutely love it, i take it all over the planet.

Check out their sales - you can score some awesome stuff. Friendly knowledgable staff to help you whenever you need it. I think it's cheaper than Galyan's in Frisco. Ugh, Frisco is way too far anyway.

Best Outdoor Gear on LBJ!

Puppeteering will take you places you wouldn't go with a loaded shotgun. On a bitter winter's night a few years ago, I jumped out of a boxcar between dark warehouses in what I thought was the BNSF switchyard, but turned out to be North Dallas. After the train rattled away, I heard the distant sound of a Nepali Sebru tune and smelled Dal, a bean soup the Dali Lama served me many years ago. A short hike toward the music led me to a scene I never could have imagined. A sherpa encampment right there on the rear parking lot of outdoor outfitters, REI.
As I entered their camp of cardboard boxes and garbage bag lean-tos, I was greeted by a man who introduced himself as Sherpa Ram Sharan. (If the name seems familiar, it should! Ram Sharan is to sherpas what Jerry Lee Lewis is to Appalachia.) The famous singer poured me a cup of monsoon flushed Nepalese tea and began the history of the camp.
In 1998, world famous mountaineering sherpa, Ang Mingmar, was invited to the U.S. to train a busy Highland Park oilman intent on climbing Everst before he died. Unfortunately, the day Ang arrived, the oilman died. Now what? Since Ang's English was limited to mountain climbing, he was directed to REI, a not-too-cheap outdoors store located on Dallas' busiest freeway, a store for those dedicated to looking good on the slopes. When Ang saw the drab building, he thought of suicide. Then he spotted the climbing wall inside and, in a matter of days, Ang Mingmar was guiding expeditions up the twenty-five foot wall. He even established base camp at five feet to sort out the weakest from the heartiest climbers. Wealthy parents hired him to guide their children and the money rolled in. Life was good for a while, but Ang longed for the mountains and drank heavily. Here's where the singing sherpa, Ram Sharan, comes in.
Ram Sharan gave Ang Mingmar his two-stringed piwancha and taught him a few chords. Then Ang struck out East on I-20 to find the mountains and make music. Ironically, he stumbled onto Shangri La-- the Mississippi Delta--where sharecroppers loved him. Hence he became the first sherpa blues singer. You might know him as Sherpa Ang, but to Southern blues lovers, he's Mississippi Jaybird Mingmar.

Now you've heard the rest of the story.

So far, so good. If you are into just about anything that requires you to move your body, REI probably has something for you. Besides the staff being all particulary good looking (most of the boys anyway, do girls work there?) it's just a feel good place to go. Shopping for the smallest things make you feel like you'll be rewarded soon, if you are a member. It's a co-opt and the dividends are substantial. I have gone out of my way to get most everything I need there for any outdoor activity even if I know I could get it elsewhere. It's not the least expensive sports store, but you get what you pay for. I got my first road bike and all the goods, and with the many return trips, the bike shop staff is welcoming and always helpful. Someone let me know once that they don't work off commision so they are all there to help. I had a problem with my bike fit and a rep suggested after a few months of me having it that I get a new one, even swap. They also have tons of classes and are very active in volunteerism. Good lookin healthy.
