~~MAKE SURE YOU MAKE AN APPT WITH MAI~~ She's great!

Seriously, I am so happy to finally find a hair stylist who actually knows how to give me layers to my thick, Asian hair! I was referred to Mai by a friend of mine, and I will never go to anyone else but her. I have gone to her twice already and she has done some amazing jobs! :) Not even kidding, she can survive in Tokyo as a hair stylist with her amazing skills. She is awesome and $49 for a great haircut isn't bad at all.

My boyfriend is also happy that I started going to Mai. Not because I look better after getting a haircut (guys don't care about a new haircut, right?)  but because he doesn't have to listen to me b*tch about a new haircut anymore. I used to b*tch about a new haircut every time I went to get a haircut but no more!

Why do I keep coming back here? Because it's in walking distance and they can usually book me an appointment within an hour. (When I feel the need for a cut, I need it NOW.)

I don't go in for the "required" 6wk cut, but more like 6mos. Don't judge me! So by the time I do call in, the last person I got that I liked is always gone (one went to Derby, the other to Seven). Once though, they kept putting me with this gal Z-something who was quiet and not very communicative (she straightened my hair when I told her I wanted wavy/loose curls, then she used a curling iron on me to put the curls back in [my hair has natural waves] and then noted that "it was a lot of work" to do so. Hello! It wouldn't have been if you had just listened to me in the first place.). After the 2nd-or-3rd time with her I made sure to ask who they put me with and that it was not with her.

Since then I was placed with a "master stylist" one time who lectured me on not coming in every 6wks. Then she placed me under a hair drier, instead of doing it by hand with a diffuser.

The last time I was there this cute pixie girl gave me a decent cut but kept nagging me about getting highlights. In the beginning I was doing the nice "I'll think about it" kind of no, but eventually I was like: Just. NO. She disappeared for about 10mins and came back with hair color samples, and I was very nonplussed.

Another annoying thing here is there is no price list that I'm aware of. When I call, I ask for someone who can cut wavy Asian hair, just a trim of about 3-4." With the basic service you will get your hair washed (which I like the most out of the whole appointment) and then cut and style. But I've been given different rates for what seems like the same amount of work. Secondly, the person who cuts your hair checks you out, so she will see how much I tip. I'll usually wimp-out and even for that Z-person, will probably overtip because that's just how relieved I am to GTFO.

I am about due for a cut. With the Gene Juarez Training Academy so close, I may just go there (the location is kind of sketch tho). However, if I once again wimp out, I will likely call the Regis and maybe ask for Matt or Mai.

Sigh.

I have to give Matt another shout out!  Again, I arrived looking frazzled and in desperate need of a haircut.  AND again, I had no event to attend, but Matt gave me the works.  I left feeling gorgeous.  It has not been 2 weeks yet, and I need another haircut.  Good news, Matt has expanded his hours, and he will pamper you while making you laugh.

Just needed a trim and thought after being stuck inside for more than a week, that a blow-dry and flat ironing couldn't hurt as well.

I always want to "do something drastic" with my hair, probably to get attention or because I get bored easily, so it always takes a ton of self control not to chop it all off once I get into the salon chair.

Alas, girls will be girls. And since Northgate was as civilized as I could get today, which is not saying very much- I found myself booking an appointment here toot sweet.

My trim was done by Sherri, who was friendly, talked about herself as much as she asked me about myself which made the obligatory conversation flow well and who gave me some good information about my husband's Indian corporation.

But after less than an inch cut all around and a flat ironing that took less than 10 minutes, $49 was a lot to swallow.

I always ask for Mai when getting my hair cut or colored and she always does a great job in giving me the cut and style that I like.

I've tried this place twice, now, and I have to say I am disappointed. The hairdressers have been consistently unenthusiastic and inexperienced. Not only this, they cut my hair so it was three inches longer on the left than it was on the right. For the price, it's simply not worth it-- maybe try going to the Greenwood Academy of Hair for comparable results.
