Review from Debbie K.
Los Angeles, CA
For authentic Chinese food that doesn't get any better than this, Regent China Inn is the place to be. We came on a Saturday for lunch special and surprisingly the crowd was minimal at 1 pm. Their lunch menu lasts until 3 pm on weekends and 5 pm on weekdays.
For $4.95 you can choose from 30 popular items on the menu. White rice and egg drop soup were complimentary at every table. We ordered sweet and sour pork, kung pao chcicken, and fried pork in King To sauce. It was incredibly tasty!
Service was mediocre but that's expected at most Chinese restaurants. Everything was done so quickly though. We sat down, ordered, and within a minute all of our dishes were brought.
Parking is a little difficult, at times. Though they have a small lot in the back I wouldn't count on there being availability most times. Bring yourself some coins or even use your credit card for street parking. $1 gets you 1 hour. -

Good friend of mine eats here every week so we met here for lunch. They have some areas of improvement like service. They need to step it up but as there wasn't an empty table there when I ate there, I can't complain too much.
We orderred pork chops, shrimp fried rice, lobster and talapia (both from the live tank). We also ordered a couple of sodas and our total came out to $37. Yes. I know, it's hard to believe. After I picked myself up, I kept eating. I must say that the lobster doesn't come out whole. They don't give the tail but they break up the rest of is and saute it with a sauce of your choice. We opted for the spicy garlic. The fish was so good, I don't remember eating fish that fresh since I usually don't like my food to look back at me before they kill it. I'm a softy.
I would recommend it and it's right across the street from Phillipe's the famous french dip sandwiches that was shut down for a month cause of vermin. Nice.
I would avoid the lunch specials and order from the menu direct. You'll pay a bit more but it's worth it. -
Review from Kali K.
Who can pass up a sign advertising Chinese entrees for $4.95? Apparently, not many can because everybody, and his momma, is here during Lunch Special hours, which span a lengthy 11am-5pm on weekdays.
Service is polite and prompt. However, while the waiter was friendly, he was also quite shady: without inquiry, he advised me that I could get WiFi by piggybacking on the Starbucks a few doors down. No thanks!
The food arrives within seconds of an order being verbalized. Now, if I'm going to be naughty and scarf down MSG, I want the stuff well-glued to my stir-fry. Kid you not: my chicken was still squawking. Undercooked would be an understatement unless blood is a new garnish, the new rave about which I haven't heard. The meat had that piercingly fresh, salmonella smell and a slimy coating.
You definitely get what you pay for. I sat at a booth across from the kitchen, so--a few bites in--I took in a heebee-geebee view of the extent of mildew and filth on display. Once I zeroed in, I grew more freaked out with every seated second. Upon inspection, the booths had worn, damaged coverings; and the tables were grimy to the grooves. I asked for the food to go and trashed it after exiting.
It just makes you wonder what's going on at the Health Department only blocks away. Perhaps it's time for an expose. -

I expected more. All I can say is that the service was very poor, and rude. As for the food, it was alright, not that great.

If it wasn't for the HORRIBLE experience, I might have rated a little higher... food is ok, and cheap! Service... HORRIBLE!
Our server was very rude! He was quick to come to the table to take our order, and the food came quick, but then we never saw him again! After about half an hour, he came to box up the food and bring our check... then, after another 40 minutes, I've had enough and took the check up myself to the counter in the back. I asked the guy if I could just give it to him, as we'd been waiting forever, and he rudely said "Set it there" never even looking at me. Then, the waiter walked up to me and said "Oh, you're ready?" I replied, "Yes, we have been waiting for 40 minutes now!" and then he just laughed at me and walked away!
No apologies, nothing! Needless to say, we will NOT be going back here!!
(FYI, the food looks NOTHING like the pictures either...) -

Go elsewhere for Chinese in Chinatown or hop onto the 10 fwy east and eat in the SGV!
My previous review was for a week night and a large group of people paying regular price. It was better than I had expected. :)
My UPDATE is related to their weekend lunch menu from 12-3 Sat and Sun. Many dishes are 4.95 including rice and egg drop soup.
There was a long wait, which was no fault of theirs and quickly received my beef and string bean (about 5 minutes).
15 minutes later a chicken in lemon sauce that I very much enjoyed.
Then nothing, we kept telling the waiters (each time a different one since there was no one waiter caring for us) that we had two more dishes and needed rice and water.
Finally after another 15 minutes we got fried salt and pepper shrimp. It had a ammonia smell-flavor and we tried to tell them it was not a good dish/possibly rotten seafood but we were dismissed twice by the manager.
It was also a fight to get our check and to tell them we did not receive all our food.
I shall not be back.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Raymond O.
Pasadena, CA
My family has frequented this Chinese restaurant for years, simply because their lunch specials are very inexpensive and provide good value for your money. I have never been here for dinner, so I can only speak of the lunch specials.
This place can get busy at times, but compared to say, lunchtime at a place like NBC over in Monterey Park, you shouldn't be waiting long if at all. Parking is free (+ tip) at their rather cramped lot, and the parking attendant will be happy to park your car for you. If they run out of room at the lot, they'll park your car at or near the sidewalk.
They totally made over the place a couple of years ago. The ambience/decor is way better than it what it was before.
If you come for lunch, soup is usually on the house. Typically the soup they give you is some sort of corn soup. It's edible -- I'll give it that.
Portions are pretty generous here -- you'll probably take some food home. Their fried dishes are good. The Pork Chop with Spicy Salt (not really spicy) is a very popular dish. I would also recommend the Crispy Fried Beef with King To Sauce. Everything else is rather average. It's probably just me, but I feel that any dish they offer that contains black bean sauce is made the same way -- they just change the meat/fish/etc.
Service is hit-or-miss. Sometimes you ask the waiter for water or some extra spoons and they forget; thus you have to ask again. But I've seen that happen in a lot of other places.
Obviously the food served here does not have the same quality as some of the great Chinese restaurants in the SGV. It's not the best Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. But, at least for the lunch specials, you will get very good value for your money. -

So I forgot my phone when I went here a while back, but this is one of those places, I would go to if I am in the area.
Awesome lunch menu, affordable and huge portions, very flavorful. Their Pork Chop Peking Style is awesome as well as the Deep Fried Squid with Spicy Salt, just great.
Parking is valet (supposedly) but it's cramped.
Otherwise, a nice little place. -

As a resident of South Park Downtown I sometimes get cravings for decent, reasonably priced, authentic Chinese food delivery.... Piles of soft noodles topped with large chunks of savory pork.... fried rice with big bits of fresh crabmeat.... you get the picture. We have no such thing down here after 5 pm.. We have a great noodle house and two tasty thai places but no "Chilivery" as I'm now calling it.
Then it hit me.. no ,really, someone threw a fortune cookie at me and said .. "Hey dumbass, you are like 3 miles from Chinatown." Now granted most good ideas do not come wrapped in a thin layer of "dumbass" but I think in this case cookie-boy was on to something.
I yelp out for Chilivery in Chinatown and the most consistently reviewed one appears to be Regent China Inn. I'm familiar with this place only because it's located directly across from Philippe as others have stated. I had yet to eat there but had seen the menu. I knew it was extensive and authentic.
I called, they happily delivered to my building for free with a 15 dollar minimum order, and the food was pretty amazing. We ordered Combo Chow Mein, Crab Fried Rice, Sweet and Sour Shrimp.... old school baby. Everything was tasty and under 30 bucks... Enough food for 4!
The website is under construction but if you can get through the language barrier (they are very patient with whitey) they will prepare for you pretty much whatever you want, and bring you menus for the next time.
Great food, good price, nice people, free delivery..... now who's the dumbass! -

Never again! I ordered delivery from here last night and it was the most disappointing Chinese food experience Id ever had.
I hadn't eaten all day and all I wanted was some fried dumplings and sweet and sour chicken. To my dismay most places I love in Chinatown don't deliver so I decided to give this one a go. I placed my order at about 6pm knowing I had to be out the door no later than 8pm. That gave me a cool 2 hours to get ready and eat before my show later that evening. Right?
Wrong. It got to my house by 7:50 and as quickly as I could give the dude some cash I was trying to eat with out spilling dumpling sauce all over my dress. I was hoping my satisfied belly would make up for the tardiness of the delivery. Wrong again. The food was cold, the dumplings had a slimy stringy middle ( very strange to imagine Im sure) and the sweet and sour chicken was dry and tasteless. I couldn't even eat it! Still famished, I threw the whole order in the garbage and left my house pissed off, hungry and out $20.
Next time I'll just go the extra mile and pick up some slippery shrimp from Yang Chow and forgo any further delivery disasters from this place. -

Th $4.95 lunch special is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's decent, sometimes it's a train wreck. I often play it safe with the pork chops with spicy salt. if you're on a tight budget however, this is a decent place to grab a quick lunch. The lunch specials are daily and come with soup, tea, and a full serving entree with rice. It is easy to go family style and order a special per person and share. However, Regent used to be much better back in the 90s and I wouldn't list this as a notable place to visit when looking for a Chinatown experience. On the plus side, it's a block from Union Station and across the street from Philippe's.

DISGUSTING, expensive and terrible service!
We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken which is hard to mess up, the Duck Soup and two egg rolls for delivery.
The said it would take 30 minutes, it took 1 hour and 20 minutes. The delivery man did not have a receipt and forgot the rice. The Kung Pao Chicken container was completely OPEN. Is it that hard to close a to-go Chinese box? So of course the sauce was all over the bag and the rest of the containers. And since it took so long to arrive the egg rolls were cold.
I called to let them know that they forgot the rice and he said, "wasn't it in the bag?" No it wasn't it the bag that's why I'm calling!!!
So he says that they will send another order of rice. No apology. Then he asks would I like anything else. And I say sure, you can throw in some free egg rolls since these were cold since it took over an hour to get here. The guy laughs and says "Oh no I can't do that for free!" (An order of eggrolls are only $2.50)
So about the food taste. The duck soup was disgusting. Soooo gross and slimey. The kung pao chicken was very basic. Just chicken, LOTS of squash, peanuts, and dried red peppers.
This meal cost $21 not including tip for the late delivery guy who forgot the rice. -

Great for large groups. I pretty much tasted a little of everything (mandarin chicken had some fat in it, but the beef broccoli was good), and the fried rice didn't taste greasy! Best Chinese food in the area I think. Now, I'm a fan of Phillipe's across the street, but when I'm not in the mood for a sandwich or yummy coleslaw, I check this place out.
Be prepared to park a few blocks away, especially on the weekends. -

Most places in downtown rob you. 9 Dollars for a bad sandwich?!?
But here, they have to be honest because so many DAs and cops come here.
Everything is 4.25. Your eyes will wander and wander through the 62 items of food. You can get fresh lobster for 13 bucks (although I don't know how fresh it is and I would not really recommend it). But the portions are huge and the plates are edible.
Bottom line: Hearty portions one can eat everyday on a government employee's salary. -

As a regular customer, i can honestly say this is the chinese restaurant that is dearest to my heart. i have literally seen this place start as a dismal, ordinary "china town" restaurant and now it has out grown it self and has blossomed aesthetically, into this decent looking restaurant. the plate and silverware maybe dirty at times, but they will happily replace it with a clean set. But i bet you're wondering about the food?? The food is excellent, it really is up to par with those high end chinese restaurants, if not better and the prce isn't that bad. If you're looking for a low priced lunch and craving chinese, then Regents luch special is for you, $5.00 for everything on the menu and it's a big menu...

This is a lunch staple. They have the best lunch specials with easily over two dozen dishes, with rice and soup for only $4.25. And the food is really good. I see City employees and LAPD officers in there all hte time.
My favorite is the chicken in black bean sauce. They have a live tank of crab, fish and lobster which I have not tried but if they do their crab in black bean sauce as good as the chicken, its on for a tasty treat. The chow mein is simply good old fashion greasy good.Listed in: Lunching in Chinatown

I give it a 2.5 mostly because of the price and I only ordered off the cheap lunch menu. Nothing is spectacular but the food is not inedible.
For $7 lunch including tax and tip, I wouldn't mine going twice a month. I work in downtown and the dash stop really close to this place.
It is cheap Chinese so the beef and chicken tastes a bit funny because I am sure they get the cheaper cut of meat and use tenderizing spices/chemical to make it softer. If this bothers you (it bothers me) get the fried stuff or stick to veggies.
I order the scrambled egg with shrimp because it tastes like shrimp fried rice without the rice which works for me when I do low carb. Veggies are good. Fried stuff is good here too.
I go when I have less than $10 in my purse. -

First time here. Price is great. food is tasty. I ordered small noodle Chicken Chow M..figured I can't go wrong. And 2 egg rolls! Ill try regular noodles next time. It made me a little sad to see the actual aquariums of the live fish, lobster and crabs right by the tables. Poor things. Other than that. I definitely will come back.

It's down. It's dirty. It's cheap.
It's a dingy place that sits on the edge of Chinatown but with lunch specials that come in at under $5 (without tax and tip) it can get pretty busy there sometimes...even with that big old green "B" rating at the front entrance.
The portions are downright bountiful, too. It's not just some skimpy portion that makes you think, "Damn, even for $5 it's a ripoff." It's more like the type of place where you struggle to eat half of your order and then ask for a box. Two meals for the price of one.
I know, it's not the best quality. It's not the best ambiance. It's not the best anything.
For $5 it doesn't have to be. -

Great Chinese food!!
This place is great guys.
Great food at a great price!!!
I've been coming here for many years and the food is consistently very good.
The lunch price of around $4.50 a plate is awesome.
I've been in the kitchen to see the cleanliness and for an old Chinese kitchen, it's fairly clean.
I've been here so many times that I have eaten everything on the menu at least once.
SO, FOR THOSE OF YOU NON ASIANS......
That don't want to guess on the menu
I recommend:
Wor Wanton Soup ***
This soup is very very good and I have not had it better at any other place. Once in a while it has a little funny after taste but it's still good. Put chili paste in it.
Kung Pao Anything
Not too much chili and all prepared great.
Fried Pork Chop
Salted shrimp w head on
Sweet sour fish fillet*
Shitake Mushrooms
Chinese broccoli
Deep fried Rex Sole**
Beef Broccoli
!different price
Live lobster
Live crab
Bird Nest Soup
Shark Fin Soup
Don't recommend the scallops, or squid.
I personally don't like chop suey....
This is a great value for the quality and taste.....
Enjoy!!

My family used to love eating here. But their quality of food has been declining... it's just not tasting the way it used to anymore.
The deep fried squid is tooooooo hard and not salted enough, like eating cardboard.
The fried rice is still delicious but the veggies in it are hard and tough to eat.

I only give two star rating because the food was really delicious though I have not returned to Regent for some years. I went there once with my friends from work @ downtown and we had a very enjoyable time, but I was dismayed when I took my children for a nice Chinese meal during my vacation. It was supposed to be a treat, instead we experienced lots of roaches on our visit. We were seated by a window and here were two roaches running in the windowsill. I tried not to think about it, but during our meal, when we were almost finished, I noticed another roach in the ceiling right above our table. You guessed it, it fell directly in the center of our table and quickly scurried away. That was the end of our meal, and as I got up to pay my bill and tell the waiter, he seemed not to understand what "roaches" were, so I drew a picture of a roach on the bill, as I pointed to it., at which he quickly acknowledged by saying oh "plenty, plenty roaches!" somehow he made me understand that they were getting the place sprayed. That was my last trip there. I don't know if they took care of the problem, but the guy didn't seem like it was a big deal. I don't remember what rating it had, but I have heard that the ratings are not all that reliable. Maybe now that it is under new management their hygiene has improved.

At first, I was very apprehensive to try this place. I discovered it while eating at the world famous Phillipe's in downtown Los Angeles and saw that they have $4.95 lunch specials. YES $4.95!!!! My first reaction was like "dude thats awesome!" But then reality set in. And I pondered. If it's that cheap, either A) the food sucks. B) the portions are small. C)nobody eats here. But i figured what the heck! if it turns out that A, B, C are true, I only lost out on a little over 5 bucks (cause of tax). So I came, and ALL three preconceptions about this place were absolutely false. The food doesn't suck and actually, It's some of the better chinese food i've had in a really long time, authentic and fresh and tasty. The portions are BIG! the lunch special comes with soup, steamed rice, and your entree. And you think man, thats not gonna be alot. But even if you come solo, they give you a POT of rice, Their soup is good and the entree is an ENTREE definitely meant for like 2 people at least! I've had like 5 different dishes now and EVERY ONE OF THEM has been amazing. It is always hot and fresh and never tastes like it's been sitting there. Their crispy beef ROCKS. I was recently unemployed so finding places that are inexpensive AND good are always like finding treasure for me. Regent China Inn is definitely a treasure In Downtown L.A/ Chinatown. It's easy to find too. If you know where Phillipe's french dip place is, you know it's on the corner on Alameda about a block or two east of Ceasar Chavez. Regent China Inn is DIRECTLY across the street on the same side as Phillipe's GO CHECK IT OUT! Your wallet will love you and your stomach will love you even more.

woke up craving chinese so i called regent (they're always leaving their delivery menus stuck in my door). ordered the egg drop soup, shrimp fried rice and assorted vegetable stir fry.
egg drop soup: the texture was a bit more watery than most places but twas a very good morning after soup. think i'm gonna try the hot and sour next time but i would definitely order this again.
shrimp fried rice: wow! where other places put in a piece or two of small semi-dry shrimp, regent china puts in a really good amount of plump juicy shrimp. they even cut the tail off! mmmm~
assorted vegetable stir fry: very flavorful. has baby corn, 2 different kinds of mushrooms, broccoli, bok choy and bamboo shoots. i topped my fried rice with this dish. the sauce is perfect for mixing with rice.
delivery was very fast and my food was still very hot. i think i've finally found the place for those morning after cravings. -

I really enjoy this place. It's on the edge of Chinatown, but a lot of people still go there. They have a lunch special everyday until 3pm. It's $5 per item so that's a pretty good deal. Their servers are decent, the place is a decent size, the manager knows how to assist the customers, the food is tasty, it's clean, and there's parking. When you order take out they add rice to your order without you ordering it. There's valet parking on the premises and it's complementary. There's an area for parties, not necessarily a room, but a section of the place. For what it's worth it's not terrible, and a must go to.

I am of the firm belief that quality whole in the wall restaurants are little treasures that need to be exposed to the world. Seafood Regent is one of those places. My parents have been taking me to this place for years and years, and the restaurant has always served great food at unbelievably low prices. Their pork chop in spicy salt, House Special Chow Mein, and Crispy Beef in King-To Sauce are my favorites. If you're in the area, this place is definitely worth a stop.

Went with a group and got to sample a few more dishes. The shrimp with black bean was really good. G still loves the kung pao chicken, but it is heavy on the peanuts. Beef & brocoli is good, the boys love the fried rice and chow mein noodles. You have to flag the guys down, they're not overly friendly, but they get the job done. We go for lunch, they do not give out fortune cookies with lunch?!? this is the only bummer. it is a quick, probably msg laden chinese feast that will satisfy a once in a while craving. This place is above average in my humble opinion. And being dogmatic as I am, their lobster in black bean sauce is out of sight! They also have a parking lot too! But unfortunately, sometimes it's full to the brim! On the contrary, eventually you'd find a place to park. There is always the street. Their crab in black beans sauce will also cure your hunger. Chinese broccoli and oyster sauce is good for roughage! Along with steamed rice too! No doubt about it; this place will definitely leave you complacent!

Is this really beef or chicken? It tasted really chewy and strange. The food was not hot, it was warm. Needless to say there is no value in food that uses meat like this. Mind you I only tried their Kung Pao Chicken and some sorta beef dish I forgot what it was called. To top off this experience, a fly landed in my tea. This wasn't the fault of the restaurant but it was the icing on the cake for a bad eating experience.
