We have taken our schnauzer to Redwood on four occasions...one of which was an emergency.

I don't understand the negative reviews.  We moved here from Palm Springs and find their rates to be similar to what we paid (and we shopped around).

The staff have always been accommodating, prompt, and professional.  Unless something horrible happens (no indications of that being possible), this will be our vet for as long as we live here.

Little Miss Cheerio is very happy with the service here...even amidst anal sac cleanings and the like...

After an unfortunate experience at another Vallejo vet, we came to Redwood.  Rumor has it that it's "pricey" but, you know you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay more to insure my pup is well taken care of.  Then when I found out most of the vets went to UCD, I felt right at home.  I love the online website and the ease of setting appointments and seeing when new things are needed to ensure Cheer's health.  Not to mention everyone is helpful with questions I may have in changing her heartguard or flea preventative.

I also love that they have evening appointments and are there on the weekends too.  Cheerio LOVES it and always meets a new friend or two in the waiting room...she confirms it (Arrrrff, arf!)

    I loved Redwood Veterinary Hospital..

Recently my dog Biggie got pretty sick. He was a sweet, 12 year old mutt..I came home from a trip and had to bring him to redwood right away, but my family and I knew that it may have been his time...

    Straight to the review:
    1. They were extremely accommodating. I made an appointment for the same day I called..
    2. Staff was caring and sensitive to the situation..
    3. The vet was kind to my baby dog and really gave the best care he could..
    4. I was given a clay paw print of my pup and a heart-felt, handwritten letter from the vet was sent to my home.

Pet hospital that makes you feel at home!  I was very worried over the weekend when my boxer developed some horrible eye problem, and I was staying in Benicia.  My normal vet is in Cotati, quite a ways away.  I was referred to Redwood Animal Hospital by the Benicia Clinic and I am sooo glad I took their advice!  From the moment I called they were very caring, concerned and accomodating.  I explained the issue and they insisted that I bring him right in.  My biggest worry was oh sh*t, how much is this going to cost?! Emergency visit, new vet, I was worried!

Happy to say that when I got there, they were so kind to me, my Boxer Miko, and were quick and efficient with the whole process!  The tech were super polite and gentle with my little man, and the vet was fantastic!  There is no lack of love and affection toward animals in this place!  Even though my pup went through some traumatic exams, he left licking everyone and wagging his tail!!  and, the best part... It was only $56 dollars for the emergency visit!!!
If you love your pet as much as I do, take them here.   They will receive nothing but the best doctor, love, affection and kind hands.

I'm really happy with them. When my boxer got attacked by a pitbull at Pt. Isabel they were able to accommodate him on such short notice. Then again when my sister took him out to the beach and got a wound from barb wire. I didn't find out until over 24 hours later when I got him back and he could not walk. Still mad at my sister for that. But they were willing to see Duke even though they did not have anymore appointments available on Sunday. Unfortunately I had to work too close to the appointment and I ended up taking him to an emergency vet after work. But I really appreciate there responsiveness and that is why I keep going back.

I took my puppy here because she was vomiting and her bowels did not look so good.  She wasn't eating.  I called that morning and explained her symptoms and they wanted me to come in immediately.  They even came out to the car to take a look at my dog as not to infect the other dogs and they wanted me to bring her into the exam room immediately.  The service was very fast because of the seriousness of the illness.  The test came back as parvo and they gave me two options which was to throw meds at me and send me home with some instructions to care for my pooch (including iv and needly injections...YIKES!) or I can keep her there for the night (or more) until she gets better and they will take care of her (charging me an arm and a leg).  Not to mention there is no overnight staff.  She ended up staying at the hospital for 3 nights.
I called everyday to ask how she was doing and visited my dog everyday.  The vet told me they would tell me what and when they were charging me but i never got that.  My dog slowly improved.  When I would just drop in for a surprise visit they would have me wait in the waiting room (which has the stench of urine but kinda not surprising) and the lady would change her diaper pad.  She was in the some isolation room.
I knew she was taken care of very well.  Anyways, 3 days passed and I said I could not afford to keep here there another night even though they suggested she stay more.  I took her home and she got better with my care alone and some anti-nausea meds prescribed to us.  I am very thankful for them caring for my dog.  But agree that it is VERY VERY expensive and perhaps more so in my case.  I looked at the bill and over everything they charged me.  Turns out every time I called to see how my dog was doing they would run a $80 dollar test and I called once a day.  It's the most expensive phone call I can every make!  I had no clue that test cost $80 bucks.  I guess that's the only thing I'm upset over is that it was a bit scamming.  But customer service and care is EXCELLENT.  I guess just ask how much everything is BEFORE they even lay a hand on you pet or if they mention anything about tests you should always ask HOW MUCH.
Also, one time I was talking to the vet about my dog and I just really burst out crying because my dog didnt seem to get better for a while.  I told her I was stressed out over the cost and just everything.  She said she can have my dog stay the night for free, but I knew that it was free because they wouldn't do any tests or what ever they did to rank up my $1300 bill!

Tikki loves the Redwood Vet Hospital!  (after all, they have cookies in each exam room and she knows exactly where to find them!)

All the docs are great -- front desk staff are the sweetest -- and best of all -- they have awesome business hours that make it MUCH EASIER for those of us who work wacky schedules to get our pets in for a check up!

This is the BEST Vet Hospital in the area. All of the staff are nice and hospitable - our dawg loves the staff while not being fond of going to the vet.... They have even been a great service to us when an older cat passed away.

They are open 7 days a week and on Monday evenings they are open until 10:00 pm and on line access to get information for you pet...appointment reminders and such!!!

    I love this place!

Well John I am glad you are a busy, very popular hospital that sees THOUSANDS of animals a year.  Those statements make it clear to me you do not care if some of your customers experiences fall through the cracks because theres plenty of suckers out there.  This is also backed by the amount of 1 star ratings your establishment has recieved. (check filtered comments).  You could have contacted me directly through email like you did for another 1 star rating.  As a matter of fact if you looked at your files I am sure not many clients other than maybe a local PD has Malinois'.

I am soooo glad this place has 5 stars.  It is simply the best.

Sometimes, you want to Yelp something more than 5 stars.  I think Yelp should allow regular Yelpers to occassionally and with great discretion give something an "over the top" rating for something that surpasses the usual rating ssytem.  Maybe for every 20 reviews, a Yelper can give one "over the top" review.

I'm going to take the bull by the horns and give Redwood Veterinary Hospital an "over the top" review.

The staff doesn't just like animals.  They are not just nice.  They are all of those things, but they are also supremely professional.  Their communication skills are beyond compare.  Every single person we interact with there is at the top of their game.  And, this is so important when dealing with a pet.  The emotions of dealing with sick animals are so different and unique, and they get that there.

They are a truly "over the top" business.  I would trek across the entire Bay Area just to use their services.

I ADORE this pet hospital. The staff is always so friendly and helpful. They have vet's that specialize in small animals, they handle them with such great care and they know exactly what they're talking about! A few years ago, I couldnt figure out why my hamster was losing his hair and the vet offered to keep doing lab tests until we figured it out. Its nice to know that they care enough about your pet (no matter how small) to help you figure out what's wrong with it.

A few years prior to that, another one of my hamsters passed away that was seen the day before. I had called the doctor to let her know that my baby passed and how thankful I was for all her help the day before. She was kind enough to call me back and ask how I was holding up. She was also sweet enough to send me a card.

I highly highly recommend this pet hospital!

I've been taking my kitties to Redwood Vet for the last 15 years.
The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. The price is what it's to be expected and no it's not cheap but you're getting UC grads who know animals. An appointment is recommended.

Doctor did not adress the problem main reason I brought my dog in and only focused on a foxtail he thought was in her mouth. $400 and one week later talking to my wife Ifound out he told my wife I never mentioned her urination problem but could make another appt. and a fresh set of charges. Not only should he have looked at both the same visit. The main reason I was there was because she was leaking urine not the microscopic piece of grass behind her tounge she gets stuck in there twice a week.

It may be on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. Self confident, knowledgeable doctors. I feel very comfortable with the care my animals have gotten here. I've been to the other side, lower prices, lower quality. My pets are worth more than that.

These vets overcharge for very minimal care.  Moreover, they charge you for services that other vets include as part of their exam fee, which is still cheaper than Redwoods.  For example, for an ear exam and ear cleaning, medicine (which made my dog's ears oily and more stinky and didn't resolve the problem until 3 weeks later, the one they provided isn't the most recommended), and visit they charged close to $100.    My regular vet provides that service as part of his regular $38 exam fee and under $17 for the medicine.  When I was in graduate school on the east coast, another vet provided the same medicine which resolved the problem in a week.  They think they're the best service in the Bay Area, and try to charge exorbitant fees.  Why go here when you can get better care at a lower cost?  What's funnier/sadder are all the dog owners I talk to at the dog park, who complain about the prices.  Some like the care, and most think they overcharge.

I just went to Redwood Vet September. 2008; but I want to start at the beginning to tell you my whole experience with them. I went to Redwood six years ago with my sick dog Raymond, I spent $100.'s of dollars and he never got better. I made the mistake of thinking they must have gotten better and I took my dog Star there last month for a skin tag and to be spayed. The Doctor said she probably has cancer and we should run and pay for a battery of tests to see if she had cancer. Scared of course we paid for all the tests $600. worth! And what do you know..No Cancer!!!! The Doctor then gave me a quote for an additional $1000. to spay her and remove the skin tag. Because I had just spent all the money on the imaginary cancer,  I said I will bring her back next month. Before Next month came my dog Star died of a Uterus infection caused by her not being fixed. When I came home to find her bleeding all over and urgently called Redwood Vet the nurse said bring her over but hurry they are closing, the Dr. was behind the desk but never came to talk to us or see my dog who was bleeding on the floor. The Nurse came out (SHE AND THE OTHER NURSES ARE EXTREMELY NICE), she looked at my dog, said Star had an Infection of the Uterus and for me to take her to the emergency clinic in Cordelia. My dog died that night in the Emergency Clinic. When I told my sons baby sitter the next morning she was horrified because she had just been to Redwood Vet and they told her that her dog probably had cancer that same week!!! The Doctor at Redwood Veterinarian also wanted her to pay for the battery of cancer tests. She was smarter then I and had said NO!  Beware...

We've been taking our dog there since 2004, and all our cats.  Are they expensive?  Yes.  Do I think sometimes the vets recommend tests that may be a little overboard?  Yes.  But look at it this way - would you rather have a vet that wants to be sure your pet is OK or one that just assumes they are?  I would rather be presented with the option of paying for additional tests, than someone just sending me on my way.  When one of our cats ballooned up and couldn't breathe, we brought her in as an emergency.  We were IMMEDIATELY assisted, she was put on oxygen and had an X-ray done.  It was determined she had fluid in her belly and it was basically suffocating her.  We were told they could drain the fluid, however given her age there was a very high chance it would just fill up again.  There was no pressure.  We were given a quote to try and treat her, and a quote if we opted to put her to rest.  After many tears, we decided not to put her through any more pain and decided to put her down.  The staff there was unbelievable sensitive to us, we got the paw print and they arranged the cremation. We were given privacy and as much time as we wanted with her before and after.  A week later we received a wonderful handwritten note from the Dr.  Ultimately you, as the pet owner, have to decide what you feel is best for your pet.  I would much prefer a vet that leaned on the side of caution when recommending treatment. If all you think about it bargain shopping your pet's care, than you should really consider whether you should be a pet owner.  Plus - use your head, if you really don't think a test is necessary then just say no.

This place is ridiculous.  I've only gone here for emergencies and after hour care (though I think an actual emergency clinic is cheaper).  It is very unfortunate that people in Vallejo think they are great vets.  I think it's a little bit of cognitive dissonance on clients parts since the they pay incredible fees for superfluous treatments pushed by the vets.  I've taken two dogs there, one dog died because they didn't provide a proper diagnosis for his respiratory infection given the fact that he was a Shih Tzu.  I spoke with vets in Pennsylvania about it and they said, vets should always take into consideration breeds/mixes with conditions like that.  Another time, they quoted me a bill charging for nurse care, anesthesia, an iv drip, antibiotics, stitches, and the surgery ($700 was the low price) for a tail amputation!  My regular vet quoted me for just $200 for everything.  Never go here!  If you're stuck in Vallejo, I'd go to Bayside.  Otherwise, go out of town.  Trust me, it's worth it.
