8 reviews for Redwood Deli
This place was my favorite place to get a hero when I first moved to the area, however, I've since seen the light.
This place is really hit or miss, depending on the time of day, staff, whether it's busy, etc. They have a great vegetarian sandwich called the "Swiss Alps," but other than that, I'm over it.
Expensive. Mediocre. Just a neighborhood deli, trying to overcharge for their sandwiches which you can get at any other place cheaper, same quality, same boars head. blah
The sandwiches at Redwood are good, but no doubt they're overpriced.
I go there because they're convenient for me and they're friendly and and make an effort to get to know their customers. After a couple visits, they'll call you by your name, which I appreciate.
Redwood has a ginormous menu, so most likely, you can find something you're into. Beyond lunch fare, they offer a huge selection of weird foodstuffs you probably don't want, but might be tempted to buy on impulse. Wine? Yep. Green tea mints? Sure. Hit, Pocky, other random foreign sweets? Why not? Redwood is the Pier One of odd-ball snacks, so if that's your thing, it's worth a stop.
As for sandwiches -- their supposed bread and butter -- Redwood delivers, but for too high a price. Yes they give you plenty of food for $7, but c'mon, $7? As nice as the Redwood folks are, I don't get paying them an extra $2.50 for Boar's Head sandwiches I can get at any other bodega on Queens Blvd., or nearly anywhere else in NYC for that matter.
Sadly, I am too lazy to walk the extra block, so I will be paying these friendly Redwoodlanders too much for my Buffalo chicken wraps for the foreseeable future, except when I gather the willpower to protest and buy a hot dog from the dude by the court house.
I've been here several times for lunch and overall, the food is really good. I haven't had any compliants with any of the dishes in terms of flavor or texture. It's good.
My only problem is that they're overpriced. I feel ripped off when I come out of the store paying $10 for a salad or $7 for a turkey burger with mushrooms (with no fries).
I would have given this place only three stars because they mixed my order up with someone else's (so some dude got a surprise Cuban sandwich for lunch), and instead of immediately apologizing and rushing to re-make my sandwich, they argued amongst themselves about whose fault the mistake was for a few minutes until I interrupted. I was going to be late to catch a flight and I decided I didn't want to wait an additional 10 minutes for them to make another sandwich, so they refunded my money. Seeing my obvious annoyance, the woman at the counter offered me the sandwich of the man who took my cuban- a roast beef and cheese sandwich on garlic bread, for free. I took it and was on my way. Let me tell you- this sandwich was AMAZING. Even though I left there swearing never to return, I will now go back just for another one of those beauties.
If I remember correctly, they are a bit pricey...I think my original sandwich came to about $8. However, if I hadn't been so in love with it a normal portion would have been 1/2 and I could have saved the other for later.
Oscar and Martin are the homies for life.
My friends and I had a crazy night in the city last night. Woke up around 10:30 craving breakfast food and finally got out the door around 1230 to realize that there weren't too many spots on Queens Blvd that were still serving breakfast.
Accidentally discovered this place and fell in love immediately. I got 2 scrambled eggs with cheese, a crap load of home fries and a bagel for only $6.50! It was delicious and perfect for a post-club night in the city.
They even brought our food to the cute wicker furniture that we posted up at. We proceeded to stay here for a couple hours, eating, laughing and chatting.
I loved the feeling of the place because so many neighborhood folks came through. They have a wide variety of food choices: from mashed potatoes and paella to fresh and premade sandwiches to BREAKFAST!
My friend ordered a Greek salad and they made it fresh for her. It was so big that she had a lot left over and asked them to put it in a to go container. But they didn't quite understand what she meant so instead they accidentally threw it away. We got caught up in our conversation and realized that she hadn't gotten her doggy bag yet. She went back to the counter and they were so apologetic that they made her an entirely NEW salad to take home for free. AWESOME customer service.
All in all it was the perfect start to a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I would definitely recommend coming here.
Even if the food at Redwood was good, I would still consider it overpriced.
They have a few options that you won't find elsewhere in the neighborhood like stuffed peppers, chicken marsala and salsbury steak. Unfortunately, none of their food is even remotely freshly prrepared but, instead, sits in trays waiting to be nuked.
Redwood also has a large selection of drinks, many of which you don't see in most delis, particularly in Queens. The row of drink coolers looks more like something you'd see at Whole Foods than a Queens deli but without so many types of bottled water.
If you're really in the mood to try something slightly different for lunch get something here and you'll remember why you always get something at the place across the street, instead.
We were on the run at 8:30 am on a Sunday, and there was not much open so we decided to go here to pick up lunch here for our dayhike upstate. There were a handful of basic sandwiches for $7.99, and Boar's Head sandwiches for $5.79. I decided to get the Turkey Club (turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato) on whole wheat with mayo for $7.99. I thought the sandwich was going to be a basic sandwich, but was surprised when they put it in a black plastic container to-go. The sandwich was cut into 4 slices with a toothpick in each piece, along with several sliced pickles and cole slaw. The sandwich was generous with turkey, very fresh and tender, the bacon was crisp, and their tomatoes were cited as being salmonella safe and approved by xyz vendor. The sandwich was pretty good, but your standard-fare turkey club sandwich. The pickles were actually pretty good, not sour, and not sweet, but a mix of the two, just perfect. I was pretty satisfied with my dish and will probably come here again when I'm on the run to pick up some quick eats early in the morning.
To note, I did notice there were a couple dishes in the fridge that was prepared by the deli, ranging from fried chicken, to macaroni & cheese, and a couple other dishes. Being there that early in the morn, I was a bit surprised to see food sitting there already, I'm guessing from the day before. I also noticed that their cold pastas and dishes were being made that morning and placed in the glass counter and pretty nice presentation dishes. The trays were only half-filled, so I'm guessing they don't get a lot of business if they don't create a full dish presentation.
