You know what I love? Barbecue. You know what else I love? Fried stuff. And you know what kinds of businesses I like to patron? Non-chains that are landmarks. Ahh, so Reddi Chick is a good spot. Yep.
This place is nothing fancy. Order at the counter, and either eat it at a picnic bench or take it to go. Wait, it's not fancy, but it's in the Brentwood Country Mart? Yep. It's been there since before all of the fancy joints that are in there now. Okay, so yeah, but to have such longevity the food must be expensive, right? Wrong again. This place is totally reasonable.
So I'm going to admit that I've never seen or eaten the ribs. I wanted to get them last time, but my girlfriend kindly (damn you!) reminded me that I'm on a diet, so I had to have chicken. Usually boring. But this stuff's pretty good. Tender and not too greasy. The barbecue sauce is okay, although it's a little tangy for my tastes... I've had better, but it goes pretty well with the chicken. The fries? ... make the whole experience worthwhile, they're delicious. Again, nothing fancy, just good ol' fries.
Previously, I've had the fried food baskets... they're fantastic. If you aren't counting calories, go for it... you can't go wrong.
All in all, 4 stars, for making it as a business for so long, reasonable prices, quick and friendly service, and pretty good food.
This is not hand massaged, positively reinforced, free-range jidori chicken. nor do I care. The bbq sauce is great, the chicken tender and juicy, and the sides are more than passable. This is one of the best places to eat in Brentwood regardless of price range.
I used to love Reddi Chick. The food has declined a bit. The chicken rarely is oddly slimy. Kind of weird. However, the other 95% of the time that it is not, they have delicious fries and great chicken. They have upped the price since I was a little kid to about 9 bucks for a big chicken basket and fries but that's ok because its so filling you can definitely make it into 2 meals. Or at least 1.5. Their ribs suck though. And their chicken fingers are dry. Stick with the rotisserie.
I've eaten here for years without questioning the tastiness of their chicken and the nice pipin' hotness of their fries, but ever since reading Larry's review, I can't stop thinking about how it's not actually BBQ chicken! He's right, it's totally rotisserie chicken with BBQ sauce on the side! They shower the whole basket with salt and seasoning though, so you get distracted from that fact...sneaky sneaky.
I only wish that they would give you more sauce from the get-go, so you don't have to ask for more. Otherwise, it is nice to just sit out in the patio area, enjoying your artery clogging meal among the tables filled with stay-at-home mothers gossiping away with their perfectly done hair and nails while their screaming children beg for $20s to drop at the Beverly Hills-based candy store.
Ah, Brentwood.
AHHH me and Dave used to eat out all the time. Man I missed those days and how I never got the chance to do that more often. The other thing I am not so well off and he used to pay for me. I still not that well off now.
Regardless of financial situation the food here is good. The BBQ chicken is solid. I usually get wings only and drown everything in the sauce. I keep coming back and keep asking for more. The fries here are good. I think that is one part of my meal that stands out the FRIES.
They have ribs here and other random stuff here. Either go here or call in to see what they have for you. This is one cool place to come to. Plus there is nice patio to enjoy your meal and a smoothie joint to wash down that meal you are having.
Small Chicken & Ribs landmark in Brentwood
I judge a place like this on
their coleslaw and the coleslaw here is good.
I always get the Chicken & Rib Combo here
Big Portions
The Fries are sprinkled
with a Spice mix that may have MSG in it.
You can eat outside in the Mart.
Good for lunch or Dinner Takeout.
despite being the only place in the world that still doesn't take credit card,
Reddi Chick is one of my favorite quasi-fast food places ever.
Sentimental value? of course, but also because the chicken basket is something a food fan could never go wrong with. (I get all the all-white-meat basket but the one with dark meat included is just as good)
Soft fries and bbq sauce galore, Reddi Chick is a necessity for a casual saturday. (or a monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday...)
Recently I had a horriffic nightmare...Reddi-Chick had gone out of business. Thankfully for me that nightmare was just a nightmare and not reality. Reddi-Chick is my favorite BBQ place in L.A. providing really awesome food. I've been going there since I was a baby and even though I've stopped eating fried foods I'll still go there. Reddi Chick you make my heart sing, you are my everything...seriously, its the only thing left that is good about the Country Mart, too many good places (like the Candy Alley, which has moved), and City Bakery (more recent addition that then went out of business), Letters, Hansel and Grettle, and the old toy stoy (not the new fancy one) are gone, but Reddi Chick remains. I know this sounds absolutely insane, but just the thought of losing Reddi Chick, the one last bastion of my childhood that remains at the Country Mart brings tears to my eyes. It has the best bbq chicken ,barbacue sauce and by far the best fries (with extra seasoned salt) in the world and Steve and Carol are great business people. If you are in Brentwood and it's not a Sunday you have to stop in, but remember to have cash as they don't accept credit cards.
Been eating here since diapers. Rib basket is good, fries are great.
After finding the famous "Fathers Office" in Santa Monica does not open for lunch, a co-worker and I were stranded. I turned to Yelp Mobile and found Reddi-Chick.
The place is hard to find. I had never been to and never heard of the Brentwood Farmers Market. It is an interesting place and I will come back. I move on to Reddi-Chick, they do not take credit cards so I have to leave and get money from an ATM. When I get back there is now a line, who doesn't take credit cards these days?
Anyway, I get the ribs and chicken combo with fries. Service is fast and I am on my way to eat.
I see a problem right away. The ribs are not BBQ ribs. These are rotisserie ribs with BBQ sauce on the side. The same goes for the chicken. For the record, BBQ = meat cooked with smoke.
The chicken is tender. It is rather bland though, nothing special. The ribs are tender, but again these are not BBQ ribs at all. The fries are good.
In all, a forgettable meal that cost way too much (almost $15 with a bottle of water added on). In the future, I would go to Costco. Their chicken and ribs are better hands down and cost a lot less.
This place has a lot of sentimental value for me. I've been going there for nearly 20 years, when I was 3 my grandma would take me for lunch and then let me ride the toy car outside the country mart. 12 years later, a buddy and I would go order entire chickens after football practice. Now every time I go home, I make a point of visiting.
Their rotisserie chicken has perfect tenderness without unnecessary additional seasoning, and the seasoning they put on their fries makes them better than any fast food joint. I would avoid cookie-cutter things like the chicken tenders, they're only so so and not really any different than your average diner. Focus on the chicken basket with fries-it's what makes the place.
So I went to the Brentwood Country Mart for the first time yesterday (yes, I should be shot for not going sooner, I know). The parking lot was jam packed and it seemed like they had 2 parking attendants for every car trying to direct traffic, but when you've got a bunch of bad drivers in SUVs I guess that's a necessity. It was scorching hot out, probably pushing 90 degrees, but strangely enough the inside of the courtyard at this place was refreshingly cool. I was torn between going to the Mexican place and Reddi Chick, and it should be obvious at this point who the winner was.
What a crazy experience this place is. It's called Reddi Chick but they also have clam strips, fish sandwiches, and about 15 different tasty looking kinds of baked potatoes. One of the guys taking orders was super funny, very energetic and yelling at people going "Eh come on in man, don't be shy, what do you want to order man, common order, don't be shy, what do you want?!!?!" Feeling the pressure, I made a snap decision to go with the chicken tenders basket.
Took a little while to finally get my order, but it was worth it. The chicken tenders came out piping hot so I had to let them cool a bit, but they're really thin, breaded just right, and really tasty. The fries were also really good. Not the best fries I've ever had, but very respectable.
I grabbed a menu on my way out and after looking over it more closely can't wait to go back to try some of the ribs and roasted chicken. Good stuff!
This place is a Brentwood landmark. I've been shoveling down their chicken & ribs since the day I learned how to tie my own shoes. Good quick service with the best fries in town. Ask for extra seasoning if you don't mind clogging your arteries a little more. The next time your in the area, make sure to stop by and fire down some wings by the firepit!!!
Satisfied my cravings for ribs! Got the rib basket and was very satisfied by the amount given. The ribs are moist but slightly crunchy on the outside although the french fries were bland and soggy (but forgivable because of the good ribs).
I used to love this BBQ place. I would always get the Chicken and Rib Basket and ask the Mexicans for extra BBQ sauce, and then they would joke and be like Vato you have to pay 50 cents, and then every time I would fall for it and be like "oh okay" and then they would be like "AAAHHHH JUST JOKING MANG" and then I would politely laugh and take my extra BBQ and eat my ribs and chicken happily.
Then, after a year, I realized that the chicken was too dry so I changed my ordering habits to the Chicken Wing and Rib basket. THEN I went to China which is chicken wing heaven and realized that chicken wings could be so much better. So, now I have come back and I think this place is only OK. I'd rather eat at the other places in the Country Mart.
I really wanted to love this place. I had dreams that this would become my secret little joint. Reddi-Chick is family-owned and they've been serving their famous roasted chicken to Brentwood families for over 25 years. How cute would that have been, if this became my little chicken joint?
Sad to say that the broasted chicken at Costco is twice as big, half the price and 10x better tasting, but that's certainly no secret. Additionally, their BBQ sauce was bland and void of spice. Corn on the cob tasted as if it's the frozen variety, not fresh at all. Fried zucchini was soooo over-fried that the zucchini shriveled up to nothingness. Mac n cheese was pasty, not creamy. Please visit The City Bakery directly adjacent for REAL mac n cheese.
The good things about this place are that it's quick and they do have yummy chicken tenders - my son loves them. But if you're achin' for some roasted or broasted chicken, head to Costco or the more conveniently located, California Chicken Cafe.
This is a great place to go if your body needs an oil change. Yikes, it's greasy! That's probably what makes the chicken authentic. The stuff must be good because I ate a half-chicken and a mound of fries for lunch in about 10 minutes. The price is right: $7.34 plus tax for a very generous chicken basket. Wash it all down with a thick shake and you're good to hit the road again.
Highly recommended!
Reddi Chick makes the best chicken tenders...no joke. So chickeny and so tender...mmmmm...
If you haven't tried it already then: a) you're crazy and have been missing out big time and b) get the chicken tenders basket. For $6.00 you can get the best fried chicken and the best fries this side of heaven.
Yes, it's so good that I don't even care that it's a basket of fried stuff with a side of fried stuff. If I had a coronary attack in the middle of a reddi chick meal, I would hold no grudge against it...I would probably keep on eating.
Note though that they are closed on Sundays (and I know this from personal experience. But it's a very sad story...)
Yum! Reddi Chick is my new destination for casual soul food. Mr Cecil's no more. The guys who work here are sweetie pies and the outdoor seating is nice for sunny days.
Lunch here is great because my office is nearby and it's cheap eats. The ribs are my favorite though the chicken is also yummy. All the sides are delicious so I usually order the fries, corn, onion rings, or cornbread. I wish they had a side sampler so I could have a little of everything. I'm greedy when I eat here.
Be careful not to gnaw off your fingers when licking off the sauce!
Cash only.
I used to go here when I was a kid. When I went away to boarding school I would have dreams of the chicken basket with fries and crave it until I came home for vacation. I always get extra bbq sauce and lick the seasoning sauce off my fingers.
The service is friendly and quick, plus the country mart is a unique landmark of Los Angeles.
Peter: How good is Reddi-chick?
Me: Amazing
Peter: how many times a month do you go?
Me: maybe once a month
Peter: (terrified) Once a month? How do you do that to yourself? I go at least once a week. It goes: Reddi-Chick on Saturdays and Bay Cities on Sundays, you do not break the system.
This place is soo good, in fact, I am eating it as I write this- yeah, I know, I'm a multi-tasker, incredible huh?
The price has definitely gone up since I was in High School but the service and food has always been the same. I usually stick with the Nuggets and Seasoned Fries Basket (now about $7.00 but you get your $7 worth) or one of their many kinds of Baked Potatoes. They also have BBQ sandwiches that are incredibly good as well as whole chickens and Spare Ribs (great for parties). The food is awesome. End of review
I love this place and have eaten here all my life. I usually get the chicken tender basket with fries. Their seasoning salt and BBQ sauce is amazing, I even have small containers at home. They also have great baked potatoes that you can add anything to.
Maybe not the place you want to eat at if you're on a diet. Great for kids, and you can sit around a large outdoor fire pit. And they FINALLY sell drinks now too. Yay!
On a mini-hiatus from studying, I headed over to the Country Mart with the gf. Given that The City Bakery was no more, we headed over to Reddi Chick to give it a try (on my prior trip to The City Bakery, I saw masses of people holding baskets of delicious-looking golden fried pommes de terre). In any case, Reddi Chick was by far the busiest of the stands at the Country Mart. I settled on the BBQ chicken basket with fries, while the gf picked the rib basket with baked beans. Like others have noted, the term "BBQ" is a bit of a misnomer, as the term "rotisserie" would be far more apt. Nomenclature aside, the BBQ chicken was a deliciously greasy, tender hunk of poultry. The frier bird was expertly dissected by a jovial fellow and placed in a paper basket and topped with freshly fried spuds. The skin was succulent and well-seasoned, and the dark meat was flavorful, juicy, and tender. The wing was probably the best piece, as it was oozing with flavor. The breast meat was a little dry, but no surprise there. The fries were piping hot and about as thin as I generally prefer them. My gf's spare ribs were definitely the inferior dish, and they were just so-so--not as tender as I like them, and no smoke/charred flavor that ribs are irrevocably bound to. Forget the prospect of atherosclerosis and other equally undesirable cardiovascular conditions and try the chicken basket with fries.
I have been coming here since I was 3. I love this place! Their rotisserie chicken is juicy, the bbq sauce is great, and the fries are soo good. I live in Boston now, but I always stop here for lunch when i'm in town.
five stars for yummyness and bargainness.
$4.90 gets me a leg and a thigh (flavorful skin, juicy meat), a side of cole slaw (a non-mayonnaise vinegar slaw), and a side of potato salad (classic, old-fashioned, delicious). the bbq sauce they serve on the side is divine. go to CITY BAKERY right next door for fabulous fresh squeezed lemonade with free refills. [edit: ok, now they started charging me $5.95, not sure why!]
not fancy, but a GREAT lunch!
plus, i love the guys who work here... excellent customer service... not really sure how they manage to get the orders out, there seems to be a lot of yelling and scurrying around...but it works!
Very good food for a very good price. They have the non-creamy coleslaw that I love so much and is so hard to find. $20 for two people! Excellent baked potato selection. Good fish, chicken strips.
We decided to try this place based on the reviews. It was really good. I especially like all the toppings they have for a baked potato. I had the chicken tender basket with fries and a potato with sour cream, cheese, and bacon. All of which were filling and full of tasty goodness. I already know what the next potato will be, chicken and dijon, although the bbq chicken and sour cream sounds good too.
If you've ever spent any time in Brentwood, I hope for your sake that you stopped by the country mart and ate at Reddi Chick. Spending a few hours sitting in the sun, watching the shoppers, and working your way through a basket of the most delicious rotisserie chicken, ribs, and fries is my idea of heaven. Maybe I wouldn't go that far, but it is definitely my idea of Brentwood. If they weren't closed on Sundays, I would probably be able to eat here every day. Their recipe hasn't changed in the quarter century I've been coming here. The seasoning on the fries and ribs is superb. This is by no means health food, but it's a great little treat.
