I too was put up here by an airline.  United to be exact.  I was stuck here in limbo with limited entertainment.  But, my room was clean.  And that says a lot.  And they do get one HBO channel.  Whoop.  Whoop.

The one elevator is really noisy so try to avoid a room near there.

This hotel happens to back up to the SF Bay Trail and there is a walking loop with chairs right outside.  That was the best part - fresh air and greenery.  This hotel is definitely akin to Motel 6 but it was free.  :)

Where do I start?
- The complimentary coffee in the lobby doesn't work- very convenient  for the only restaurant in the area that is attached to the hotel.
- I have 2 herniated discs in my lower back so appreciate the lower floors when I have a suitcase. I requested a bottom floor & those are SMOKING rooms... WHY would you put smokers on the bottom floors where the lobby is so as soon as you walk out it REAKS!! Smoke floats- put the smokers above!
- I was on the 5th floor: #1 elevator stopped with PEOPLE inside!
There are 3 other elevators but no signs directing you to them
- I agree below: DIDN'T USE THE SHOWER! The bathroom floor was sticky & I wasn't taking a chance. The fan never got cool, the alarm clock is only an alarm that is stuck on Jan. 3 ~ 5:51am...???

The only redeeming quality: the hotel staff was friendly.

This place smells, feels unsafe & some of the people walking around made me nervous.

So I stayed here for one night with my boyfriend, and it wasn't all that great. Its exactly what you would expect from a cheap hotel. There was no weather stripping on the door so sunlight and a lot of air got through. The bathroom floor was sticky (im not even going to try to figure out why, gosh, so gross) and the carpet was damp. I am glad I only had to stay there for one night because 2 nights would have been unbearable. The bed was so uncomfortable and the pillows were like rocks.
This hotel was just below average for me.

This must be the happening hotel for people displaced off their flights at SFO.  On this night, I was put up by AA (it was voluntary), and with the crappy weather it seemed quite a few people were also spending an unexpected night in SF.

The shuttle simply doesn't run often enough at night, especially considering that they had contracted with the DoubleTree to use their shuttle.  So do I blame Red Roof or DoubleTree?

The Red Roof desk also never picked up the phone... but apparently there was only one guy, so I can excuse him, but I can't excuse the hotel not hiring more staff.

Surprisingly (and contrary to previous reports), having a hotel voucher meant that I got my room much more quickly.  I guess he was almost expecting stranded passengers.  He handed everyone a slip to fill out (only needed basic info like name and address).  I flashed my voucher, it took it and handed me a pre-prepared key card and room number, and that was it.  From shuttle to key was about ONE minute.

My room was better than I expected.  It was obvious that it was recently renovated, as the decor was updated, and it seemed clean.  The pillows were alright, and the bed was comfortable.

I know this isn't the Four Seasons, but this is why it loses 2 stars:
- No free Internet (and here, the pattern is the cheaper the hotel, the more likely it is that there's free Internet).
- Shampoo came in ketchup packets, and I only got 2.
- No hot water when I came in! Barely lukewarm.  It got hotter in the morning, but still wasn't enough for me.
- It's a maze, and there aren't enough signs to guide you to your room.
- It's pretty close to the 101, so the further away you are from the lobby, the louder the road noise will be.

I guess I take solace in the fact that I've stayed in worse places.

I LOVE THE DECOR of RED ROOF. Red and Blue stripes, like nothing you've seen before. It's like they actively tried to give people optical illusions with the curtains, bedspread and sofa chairs. It makes my eyes buzz. Can eyes buzz? This place is a goldmine for research into the cultural history of motel furniture. Drool. Shudder. Drool.
It's the simple things. I'm posting photos.

Like many people who spend time at this motel - I ended up here because American Airlines had to put me up for a night because they caused me to miss my connection to Sydney.
The experience? Surprisingly ok. I expected bed bugs and dust, but it wasn't so bad. It was clean, spacious, the bed was moderately comfy, and although you do have to pay for internet (if not in a special suite room), the wireless signal is strong. There are towels, tissues, soap, a desk and a TV. The heating in my room was waaaaay too powerful for the room... not the most efficient system. But oh! The colors of the dial on the heater matched the colors of the room decor - so I was pretty excited about that too. The whole event inspired a photo essay.

Here are some tips:
If you have airline meal vouchers, expect the diner at Red Roof to be a bit difficult about accepting them - eg. the breakfast vouchers are only able to be used for breakfast, not for any other meal, etc.
The shuttle to the airport comes regularly, but the drivers I had were a bit odd. For example, when traveling back to the airport my shuttle driver drove to the next motel, got out of the vehicle, and disappeared for about 15 mins while the engine was still running. Maybe he had a tummy ache? I have no idea.

There's nice clean sheets, that do NOT smell funky. The pillow aren't lopsided, not too firm but not too soft. Your head actually stays atop. There isn't any funky smells coming from the room, and has a great layout, there is an L shape desk area, a king size bed, bathroom, mini fridge + microwave. For tissues, you get to-go packages, instead of a tissue box (Yes!). Theres a diner place attached, and i think its open 24 hours or so (at least at 3am it was).

For an Inn, its pretty awesome!

We booked a king suite for the night after the movers left.  Our cat was welcome.  There was free internet on T-Mobile.  There is a 24 hour restaurant on the premises (breakfast and coffee were good, service was wonderful, big cushy red leather booths were fabulous).  The Bay Trail is right there (the hotel is on the bay and I could see San Francisco skyline from my bed on the fifth floor).  The room was clean, the bed was firm, the pillows were good and the bedding was adequate.  The TV swivelled.  There was a fridge and a microwave, full size ironing board and iron, hair dryer.  I heard some trucks start up at 4am and 6am, but would probably not have if I had remembered my ear plugs.  Water pressure was excellent.  I could see our car from the balcony and the parking lot is well lit.  There is a pool.

Would definitely stay here again and also recommend it to friends if they want a good value in the Bay Area.  You can take the free airport shuttle and catch BART to the City or anywhere else you want to go.

I got a complimentary stay at this fine 2 star inn on a trip back to PDX via SFO from IAD thanks to United.  The inbound crew from LAX caused our flight from IAD to be delayed by over 2 hours, so lucky me didn't get into SFO til 12:30am and then had to wait for a voucher and then for the hotel shuttle to take me to the great Red Roof Inn at 2am.  Got a whole 4 hours of sleep on their wonderfully cheap beds with clean white linens before I had to wake back up and catch the shuttle bus back to SFO.  The price I pay for the jet set life.

I actually lived in this Red Roof for several months. (Terribly long story...moving to and from Switzerland, getting back into US life, apartment hunting, etc., etc., but I'll safe this for another day.) Anyway, even though I usually don't like motels (at all), I grew to love this place. Over a 3-month-plus period of time (in total), I had a consistently good experience with the staff and the inn. The rooms are CLEAN. The sheets are clean. The bathrooms are clean. The carpets are clean. The TVs are clean! And work. (Plus, you have a wide varieties of On Command films, and three channels of HBO.) The rooms do not smell. It's been recently renovated as well (including the pool), so there's still a sense of new-ness about the place. The diner attached, Leann's, is actually a very nice little place -- the people are so friendly, and the food is great. The manager has another great restaurant in the City (San Francisco) that serves Chinese food, and Leann's serve some of the same dishes. It's open 24 hours, so if you have a 3 a.m. snack attack, stop by for some buttermilk pancakes. (Very yummy.) For a motel, it doesn't get better than this.
