I would love to tell you about my first Red Mill Burger but am fearful that by going into too much detail I will drool like a St. Bernard on my laptop.
Not only do they boost the best burgers ever, but they have these onion rings that taste as good as getting off work on Friday. Crisp, huge, and delicious.
Yes, it is a tiny establishment and will generally be filled to the brim with locals who know, that you can get a burger anywhere but sometimes you are overcome by the need for a Red Mill.
Disclaimer:
Do not call your friends and gloat that you've just eaten the most delicious burger, knowing that your friend cannot go. That is cruel, unusual and just plain rude.

Sure it's small, the lines are really really really long, the food takes a solid amount of time to make....quit your bitching because you're about to eat one of the best burgers. Bring some friends, gossip about how crappy your job is, how annoying your sister is with the constant jabs, how you want to soundproof your apartment because you're tired of your loud and obnoxious neighbors, you'll be able to get through all of these things while you're waiting and it is worth it.
While you're talking about all of the BS that normally doesn't bother you unless you're hungry, check out the cooking station. Look for the big old block of bacon. It is seriously the size of Texas so you can't miss it. By the time your friend tells you ways of not only soundproofing but insolating your house during this cold winter your order is up. If you're lucky to find a table with ketchup throw some on your fries but if you're unlucky you'll notice that a lot of the tables (there's not that many) have mustard, the ketchup is like Waldo.
Red Mill burgers fills my stomach with glee, sitting out and looking over Greenlake eating like a carnivore should. No other "drive in" comes close to the quality and goodness that goes into the burger.
Thanks for the phone calls you jerks now eat a burger for me!
This restaurant is really good. It's a very small burger joint with good prices for the burgers. the place is small though, so the wait can be pretty long and it can be almost impossible to find a spot to sit easily, but it is worth the wait.
The burgers are large, but not so large that you aren't able to finish them. It's a decent size. They also have veggie and chicken burgers available for someone who's not in the mood for red meat.
The onion rings are also good, very different from the typical, in that they have some sort of spice and almost cornmeal-like breading that make them something special. They definitely aren't the best I've had, but they're different in a very good way.
Some buns are either regular buns or kaiser buns, and I have to say that the kaiser buns are almost perfect. They aren't soggy, yellow, or too sweet.
All in all, Red Mill gives one heck-of-a good burger for a good price. Definitely a favorite.
The burger was good and cheap. I think it's worth it. I ate Beef Verde burger and tried both their french fries and Onion Rings and their strawberry shake. O.. with a side order of bacon. The burger was really good (especially for its price), the french fries is definitely much better than the onion rings. The strawberry shake is good too. And the side order of bacon.... hmmm.. what can go wrong with bacon? I kinda feel that the it taste kinda the same as red robin burgers, but with a lot better price. So if you love burgers, I recommend you to go here!!! I have to warn you that there may be a long line of people lining up for the same burger like you too there...
Delicious burgers, I loved the sauce they use. No need to add ketchup or mustard. Crunchy onion rings, some of the best I've ever had.
Long wait for a couple of burgers but well worth it. Got to check out the huge pile of bacon and regretted not getting the bacon burger until I tasted my Verde Burger.
My wife got the Veggie Burger and was surprised and happy to find a chunk of an olive in her patty.
Oh yeah and they're were very fairly priced. Just bring cash or checks, they don't accept debit or credit cards.
Can't wait to go back. I wish they had a place like this in the east side but also worth the drive from Kirkland.
Best Veggie Burger Ever. Gloriously homemade, surrounded by a bun that should make Lunchbox Laboratory and The Counter buns pile into the next Greyhound towards South Dakota and never return.
Good crisp fries. Swift service. Cool vintage decor.
Love.
It's not fair; that I have to live near one of the best burgers in Seattle, or in my world, pretty much anywhere.
Enter the delicious the Red Mill Burger, a wonderfully crafted burger of joy and warm hearted love. In Greenwood, there are many luxuries, from the small businesses which season this iconic neighborhood, to the small town feel, make for great shopping, and a deeper sense of community, not frequently seen. All that home town flair, you can feel it's encapsulated into this local favorite.
When I'm not traveling, I try to make my way here, especially when friend from out of town visit. The taste, is full of flavor, the meat had amazing flavor, I would guess comes from the flavor from lunch time quota of bacon. The Red Mill Deluxe is what I recommend, comes with their special Red Mill sauce. It's not thousand island, and it isn't whatever they put on a Big Mac, but something which is distinctly their own. I dare say; it has just the right bite and flavor, to accompany pretty much anything.
Going there; First, NO CELL PHONES, it's just rude when ordering. It's not a big place, so if it's busy, you might have to sit outside, but don't let that discourage you. Also there is parking outside, but only about 12 spots, so street parking is a definite possibility, but it's 1-2 hour free parking.
Eating Recommendation: With all foods of this nature, freshly made, it means take your freshly brushed teeth, and bite ASAP. You'll thank me for that. If this this is your first time there, make sure to ask for Tillamook Cheese, it's 60 cents more, but you'll thank me for that also.
Who in their right mind doesn't love red mill? Even vegetarians like it!
I have been meaning to review it for some time now. I go here every now and then because they are the best burgers in town with damn good onion rings. My favorite burger is their verde burger with the peppers. You can't go wrong with this one.
The only thing I wish were different is that there is always a line... it takes you several minutes to get through to get your order and again more time until its ready to eat. They take cash only too, which is sometimes a bummer. But.... its the best burger you'll eat in Seattle.
AWESOME Onion rings, the batter is corn meal I believe and has a bit of peppery bite to it. Very crispy too. Their tarter sauce is fabulous with them..... YUM !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The burgers are also so so good, we had the Double Pepper Bacon Deluxe w/Cheese, the Bleu Cheese N' Bacon Burger, the Verde Burger and the Chicken Club Burger. They were all delicious! The mill sauce they put on is a must try too.
We didn't get a shake but I heard many people ordering them and saying how good they are. The service was fast and well organized....
Be prepared to wait if you come at the lunch and dinner rush..... the line will be out the door. BUT that just proves how good it is!!! :)
Red Mill keeps it real. I went on Sunday night with a couple out of towners who wanted a good burger before heading to Central America. They were more than pleased, and judging from the awkwardly cramped line inside, they weren't the only ones.
My two favorite things about Red Mill (besides the delicious deluxe burger with cheese, onion rings and chocolate malt shake):
-The huge piles of bacon. If you've been there, you know what I'm talking about! Look behind the counter and you will see it in all its glory.
-The Dijon mustard packets were in a wooden clog on the counter.
Another bonus- Phinney Ridge is super cute, so you can go on a walk after your 5,000 calorie meal. Or go to the Kort Haus for a beer. The choice is yours.
It was my husband's 28th birthday this past week and he chose the agenda for the night. On it, a trip to Red Mill.. a first for the both of us. Now, I'm a vegetarian, but I can still get into a good (veggie) burger, so I was a little excited to go myself.
When we get there, we see the sign: CASH ONLY. Great. Next to it a smaller sign that says there is an ATM 3 blocks north. We set out (on foot) to find this elusive ATM machine. It was a nice night, so I wasn't upset when it turned out to be 6 blocks north .. instead of 3. Either way, a nice stroll got my stomach a-grumbling in anticipation. We get back and make our order: a double cheeseburger, a veggie burger and a side of fries. It was $19, ouch! We waited about 10 minutes, give or take, before they called our name. We had decided to take it to go because the place was pretty packed, and we ate in our car.
The verdict? It was pretty good, according to my meat-eating husband. My veggie burger wasn't anything special. The fries were thick cut and fresh, but didn't really have any flavor to them.. they would probably be really yummy with a shake. We plan to go back again and try the shakes and onion rings, but I won't be in a rush to do so.
We arrived by 7pm on a Sunday. They were OUT OF BACON SORRY.
What? How could you be out of bacon an hour before closing? I suspect that they source bacon from Costco, cuz Costco closes early on a Sunday night.
We stood in a line with about 10 people in front of us. 10 minutes later... We are OUT OF ONION RINGS SORRY.
wtf?? We came here for the touted onion rings, and you tell you you have none? Do you source cornmeal from Costco too?! I really only wanted to try the onion rings, but now I have to eat something else... fine, I'll go with a Red Mill Deluxe.
5 minutes later, I arrive at the cash register, and regrettably order the burger. Just when they were taking my name, they took down the onion rings sign. Wow, so there's onion rings now! I'm gonna get some onion rings for my order too!
But wait... I didn't want the burger in the first place. So I proceeded to cancel my burger and just give me the onion rings. Mission accomplished.
Anyway, here's the actual review --
Onion rings: very crispy shell with tender onion inside. It is delicious, like many other reviews have mentioned.
Fries: The fries were too thickly cut and not fried at the right temperature - which tasted like soft potato sticks.
Oreo Milkshake: Yummy, but then again it's pretty hard to mess up anything with Oreo cookies in it. They need to blend it better cuz there was a thick layer of cookie chunks on the bottom!
Burger: Didn't try it, the bun appeared bigger than a fast-food joint but still didn't look too much different. My boyfriend and friends didn't think too highly of them though.
Overall: If you've ever been to In-N-Out, Red Mill sort of reminded me of it except $1.50 pricier for a regular ol' hamburger. Sure, they have fancy shmancy items like bacon, but what's the point if they regularly run out of it? At least In-N-Out always offers everything on their menu (and even ones not on their menu). I'd pick In-N-Out any time if it were in Seattle.
I highly suspect they use these "WE ARE OUT OF ___ SORRY" signs to get people to come back again.
But I will not be fooled. And you have been warned.
Four stars for the good burger, fries, excellent cornmeal batter onion rings and boysenberry shake. 1 star for the girl that took our order. So let's call it 3 stars.
The girl taking our order provided some of the worst service I've experienced in a long time. She didn't acknowledge us to take our order, and had a disgusted look on her face. I asked her what kind of root beer they had and she responded "Barq's or whatever" in a bratty tone - nope, not kidding, that's the exact quote. She was super unpleasant and also seemed upset at me for not giving her my name without her asking.
This is turning out to be a theme in my burger reviews (see Surfrider Cafe) but turns out next thing I know, she's hanging out with her boyfriend in the window for a kiss on the cheek, etc. (I uploaded a pic in the gallery, seriously check it out. Especially if you are the owner.)
Apparently she just wanted to get out of there to be with that dickshit: little did she know that the Dexter of yelp was afoot!
Note to hormone induced burger girls of the world: keep the cb's in check until AFTER you're off and I get my burger and some better service. Just be nice, that's all I ask.
Try the peanut butter and jelly (strawberry) milkshake. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and the burgers are good too.
Am I the only person disturbed by the huge stack of precooked bacon sitting around and the ever present swarm of flies in this place? The flies have got to be landing on that bacon ALL day. Am I right? Maybe it happens other places too, but I prefer not to witness it. HOLD THE BACON PLEASE...this is not something I often say!
Red Mill is awesome, but it's difficult to describe just why it's so awesome. This isn't a burger place where there is something unusual that stands out; the menu is pretty run-of-the-mill American Burger joint options.
What Red Mill gets right is that the burgers are Just Right (TM). The buns are just the right level of cripsy, there's just the right amount of sauce (no super messing dripping), the balance of toppings is all just right. It's what I think should be described as an artisan burger, except nowadays artisan has come to be synonymous with pretentious.
Put another way: if there was a photo of an American cheeseburger in the dictionary, it would be Red Mill's burger. It's the quintessential example of what a burger should be. Sure, there are places that go above and beyond it, but I think there's something to be said for being exactly what I think a burger is at its core.
They have a wide variety of shakes that I didn't get to try (and wish I could have), but they do serve sparkling lemonade, which I so rarely find around here. The onion rings and fries are also both very tasty.
The biggest downside is that the interior of the restaurant is small; I went on a rainy evening so the outdoor seating was undesirable and inside was completely packed.
The burgers are bigger than most, and onion rings are not so bad. Bring cash. That's about it. The place is always busy, and this is one of my theories as to why it is: it's located at a street corner, where passing cars can see people oozing by outside the joint while waiting for their orders. It certainly makes one think that something is cooking, so they stop by sometime to check it out.
What's amazing to me is how the crews work together to accommodate the almost non-stop burger orders from the crowd. How do they take breaks? Their job is certainly a hard one, and I give them a lot of credit for trying to stay positive the whole time. That's it.
I adore red mill. I can always count on them to satisfy my burger craving (on the cheap!). However, i rarely go because i can't stand the wait...and theres never enough room to grab a table so by the time i get home the bun gets all wet/soggy (i despise wet bread..ew) from their special sauce. I wish they had curly fries though cuz their regular fries are just eh and Im not a fan of onion rings but apparently theirs are really good.
Oh yea and cash only..booo..who carries cash anymore??
Red Mill makes a yummy, balanced burger. It's the right amount of sauce, the right amount of onions, the right amount of meat, and a solid bun. Red Mill has been around forever; since 1937, I believe. The place is still small and has a Mom and Pop's feel to it, but, it is extremely popular and the line went about 11-15+ deep on a Saturday night...out the door and into the street. Overall, I give this place about 3.75 stars.
Is it worthy of all of the hype and praise of Oprah, GQ, and everyone else? I'm not sure, but, the Bacon Deluxe is only $4.39. I'd say it's one of the best burgers I've had for the price. I mean $4.39 is basically a Happy Hour food price. If you compare this burger to happy hour burgers, it puts them into the dumpster.
Is the Red Mill sauce really worth all the hype? Would people really tear each others' hear out or start wars over it? Not me. But, I have to admit this is a very well balanced burger, and I would certainly go back to this place. For a burger and shake combination, this place is very good.
The McMenamins by Seattle Center also has very good burgers with a less Americanized style of a bun, and for a burger and microbrew combination, I'd go there first (but, not ordering the 1/4 lb. Happy Hour burger. It won't compare as well as their others will...)
(Note this review was re-posted since I accidentally used the Dravus location the first time around. My mistake.)
As the hostess for out-of-town friends this past weekend, I decided that I wanted to show them some of Seattle's Staples, Red Mill being one of them! I had never eaten here before myself, so I was excited to check it out as I am a fan boy for Man vs. Food. Yes, go ahead. Make fun. No care. Love that show.
So I'd heard from a few friends that it was cash/check-only. Minus one star on that alone because it is an absolute act of God if I actually have cash on me. Not to mention, one of my friends that I took to Red Mill somehow didn't get the memo about cash-only, so we got to take 20+ minutes out of our day to walk to the nearest ATM. Seriously, Red Mill. I would love you more than words could say if you just accepted debit/credit cards, but since you don't, I can find all the words I need.
So we walk into Red Mill after this massive detour to get cash and check out the menu. I decide on the Verde Burger because I'm awesome, and my friends get the Bleu Cheese and just a regular cheeseburger. Oh, and onion rings and fries. So. We go sit outside with the other million and a half people trying to order/sit/not sit at Starbucks' table and wait for our order. We were having a blast chatting outside, so if the wait was incredibly long, I wouldn't actually remember.
So I hear my name boom out from the speakers, and I start swimming through the other patrons to get to my food. I grab it my tray of deliciousness, and off I go, jumping over small children, weaving in and out of this massive line of hungry people, but I somehow make it safely back to the table outside.
And in my head this whole time I'm thinking, "Dude, it's just a burger. You don't eat burgers ever, so this won't be a big deal. It's just food." Okay, well I'm terribly wrong in that regard because holy moly the Verde Burger...I needed to slap somebody, it was that good. The anaheim pepper was such a fantastic addition to the burger. Honestly, everything about that burger was perfection. The Kaiser Bun, the meat, the cheese, the pepper, the everything. I ordered mine without the Mill Sauce because I'm weird about condiments, so I can't comment on it personally. However, all my friends were peeing their pants about it, so it just have been good.
The fries were just pretty normal. Good, but normal. What really sets this place apart is the burger. I'm just sayin'.
If they added the ability to take cards, there would be no stopping Red Mill. Until then, I'll always have a love/hate relationship with them because, well, I love the Verde Burger, but I hate having to go get cash just to eat. I use cards as so many smaller places where I pay so much less. Red Mill. Seriously please consider changing your policy on cards, and I'll be your fan boy, too.
After an eight day cruise in which I devoured 20 cows, half the fish life in an ocean, a few dozen eggs, a bazillion chickens and never-ending amounts of chocolate I was quite perplexed on what my return-home meal would be. It was pushing 3 and I hadn't eaten since 7 a.m.... granted I had everything on the breakfast menu, but I was starving and knew I wanted Mexican food or Burgers... the seemingly only things the cruise did not offer. Gorditos just sounded far too heavy so I decided a bacon cheeseburger, onion rings and a milkshake would be a nice, light alternative.
Despite a long line my order was ready pretty quickly. The bag was pretty heavy. Who knew two burgers weighed so much (and no, both of them weren't for me.... although I could have eaten them both). They were pretty greasy and were assembled pretty sloppily, but were delicious. The crispy, peppery bacon along with the melted, gooey Tilamook Cheddar are perfect toppings. Slather on a little bit of their "special sauce" and you have one delicious burger.
The onion rings came in a generous amount and were perfectly fried. I lurve the cornmeal breading they use! Slightly peppery from the batter, slightly sweet from the onions they use and always perfectly crispy. The milkshake was rich, smooth, thick and bursting with chocolate goodness (even better when I added a shot of espresso into it).
Thanks for preparing a delicious welcome-back-to-Seattle meal Red Mill!

In my humble little opinion this is the best burger in Seattle... best burger in the world as a… Read more »
Of all the burger places I visit in WA - Red Mill is my first choice over even the Counter, and Pyramid. The deluxe double bacon with cheese is the best. Every ingredient and condiment is top quality, ripe and tasty. You know a place cares about burgers when they take the time to perfect bacon. Don't miss out!
Dining area is sparse. That is kind of a criticism. OH yes - they only criticism is the cheap ketchup they offer. Order it to go and use your own ketchup at home if you like it.
Deeee-licious. If you time it right before the noon rush, you can get a table and everything. They have booster seats and a couple of high chairs - for those of you who want to bring along the cherubs.
I have had the plain ol' burger and the red onion burger. Both are super, and I just love the mill sauce. Slightly picante and not at all mayo-y - yum. The onion rings are good, too. The flour mix has cornmeal and a hint of cayenne. My mom got a chicken burger and it looked really good - not pressed chicken parts, but an actual chicken breast. She said it was quite good. My dad got a cheeseburger and scarfed it down, so that was good, too. The lettuce is real and crispy; my tomato was red and tasty. I will go back to try more burgers, yes, I will. Oh, I want to try those shakes, too. Yes, I do.
And! I like the way they wrap it so that you can hold the burger by the wrapping and eat.
Now, there is a lot of hype about Red Mill. I don't really know that it deserves all the accolades. For what it is, however, it does deserve some kudos: reasonably priced, good burgers, special sauce, decent service. This is not artisanal burgers in an upscale atmosphere. This is not a haven for foodies. So, in its realm, super-yummy and worth frequenting.
Uniformly delicious hamburgers. Fantastic onion rings. Sodas, shakes, and malts. Go early to avoid the line.
Burger, my favorite indulgence. After seeing this place on "Man vs. Food," I was ecstatic to try this place on my next trip to Seattle. Wait wasn't too bad, but seating was a bit of a drag since the place was packed. Service was good. We both ordered the "special" which consisted of the norm with avacado and Tillamook cheddar cheese, and split an order of fries. The burger was great (not to die for which was what I was hoping) fries were yummy. Not too greesy, seasoned with salt AND pepper! ;) My other half ordered the boysenberry shake which was also pretty good. All in all, the place was tasty. 4 out of 5 simply because I was hoping this place would truly be "to die for." But, I will come back next time I'm in Seattle.
I love this place. I usually get take out, and get the double bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. A little pricy at $9.99 for a burger and onion rings, but very tasty. Burgers are cooked to order, and toppings are fresh. My only real criticism is that their to go orders tend to get soggy/mushy before you get home. I still stand behind the 5 star rating based on taste and ingredients.
They only take cash and checks. No cards. Expect a line/crowd. Call and order ahead for take out orders.
I've long heard the buzz for Red Mill, and was eager to try what has long been called one of the best burgers in town.
First things first - love the sauce. Kinda sweet & tangy; it's unusual, distinctive, and darned if it doesn't compliment the burger fantastically. Oh, and good buns too. Nice soft bread with a light toasting, I'd say this and the sauce really make it all work.
As for the patty, it's good as in local-burger-you-grew-up-with-good, but isn't going to win awards on its own. I got the 1/4 pound, and thought there wasn't enough beef to go with the bun & fixings. I also tried the deluxe bacon & cheese (had to after the 1/4 lb) and that had the meaty flavor I was after.
The food is simple and a pretty good value for the money, service at the counter keeps it casual. Contender for best burger in town? Not quite, but definitely up for being one of the best burger joints. I mean, proper shakes, good fries, and being a local neighborhood joint all count for that vote, don't they?
I'm not that much of a burger person, but I sure can appreciate one.
Red Mill makes some of the best burgers outside of my house. There's always a line (and sometimes out the door), even at closing. But closing time is the best time to dine here since that's when they actually have your pick of tables and seats available.
I can tell you what all the hype is about. People in Seattle seem to overlook good food for anything that is small, inconvenient and local. It's an epidemic! Red Mill falls in this category.
Were the milkshakes tasty? Sure! Are the burger patties tiny and not that exciting? Yes! Is it anything you should ever go out of your way for, wait in that crazy line, attempt the parking lot, or pay their silly prices for? No.
This place has tasty burgers and fries. The wait is long, but worth it. It can also be hard to find a table sometimes, but that is part of the experience. I took my sister here when she was visiting and she LOVED it and she hates fast food, so it has to be good, right?
Bring cash! No cards accepted.
My experience at Red Mill:
Open mouth wide, bite, crunch, munch, suck on shake, wipe grease off mouth, crunch some more, experience euphoria, munch, munch, munch...
It was deliciously salty, fantastically crunchy, and ginormasly big. I haven't been to most burger joints due to my allergy to wheat. But this weekend I cheated and got to be 'normal' like all the rest of the peeps in Seattle...if normal is what you call us.
I came to know Red Mill Burger because I saw it from Food Channel's show, Man v. Food. The host raved about how great their burgers and that this place has been voted 10 years in a row as Seattle's Best Burgers.
I have friends from Seattle and dragged them to this place. The place was packed when we get there so, I thought, "Hmm... this is a good sign." We sat outside and I ordered their Red Onion Jam Burger. Sorry Red Mill Burger but I've had WAY better burgers than yours... for example, Hudson's Hamburgers in Coeur d'Alene. Anyway, the patties were thin and dry as if I went to McDonalds. I think, the veggies and other stuff kinda made up for their patties' shortcoming. I also had their onion rings and I enjoyed them very much but I went there for their burger!
What a coincidence..."Betcha By Golly Wow" was playing in the background as my sister picked up our order and placed our food on the table. The song expressed exactly how I felt because just looking at the food wowed me over. Sure, this place wasn't much of a looker, the wait was long (about 20 minutes to order), they only took cash, and the place was a little dirty (the bench and table we sat in was a bit sticky...minor eww?), but I thought it was worth it.
We went here after a hot yoga class and we were starving. I ordered the Double Bacon Deluxe with Cheese because a regular Bacon Deluxe with Cheese might not have cut it. My burger was huge and the pepper bacon was crispy! You can really hear the bacon crunch when you bite into it.
My sister ordered the Verde burger which tasted pretty good, but since I'm a meat lover, I still love my Double Bacon Deluxe with Cheese the most! We also ordered the onion rings and french fries, which were both really salty, but still really good.
Salty and greasy - far from the healthiest meal out there, but definitely something to indulge in every once in awhile!
Last night I had a burger revelation. My double bacon with cheese (+ blue cheese crumbles) was like a symphony of delight to my tongue. The burger was cooked to perfection and was very juicy. The toppings were right on cue, and I yearn for the special sauce recipe they use.
We placed our orders and tried to stay out of the way of the incredibly crowded entrance. We waited about 10 minutes, and got lucky and snagged a booth in the corner!
I think I moaned slightly as I bit into my delightfully delicious amazing burger (with bacon). I was messy and so into it.Yes it dripped slightly down my chin and I needed two napkins. But you know what? I don't care, because it was amazing. (Plus I was only with my roommates who I don't try to impress anyways)
Oh Red Mill, you tempt me. You seductress you. I WILL be back.
Saturday lunch at Red Mill Burger = one of the longest lines I've been in to get food since elementary school.
However, I must admit it was worth it. I got the verde chicken burger, which was your average grilled chicken burger with a not-so-average fire roasted pepper and of course, their fantastic Red Mill sauce. The pepper was a great addition-- soft and smokey with a pleasing amount of spice and sweetness.
Their milkshakes are good too-- I got the 'truffle mint' flavor, and it wasn't overly creamy or depressingly watery; just the right mix. Too bad it's kind of small for nearly $4 a shake. D:
We didn't make a fuss about it when we went because we understood they were being swamped, but they forgot to include the tartar sauce we asked (and paid!) for.
Do note that they are cash-only!
Red Mill Burgers sits on an isthmus which juts into the confluence of 67th Street, Phinney and Greenwood Avenues. The restaurant is located in a small building on the left, adjacent to the ubiquitous mermaid-green store. The décor of Red Mills is more of a 50's theme: old advertising signs adorn the walls and the wooden benches will remind you of an old soda fountain store. You'd almost expect to sit next to Archie and Jughead in one of the seats.
As you might expect, the primary meal at Red Mill is the burger. So, being the culinary aristocrat that I am, I had the Bleu Cheese N Bacon burger with fries. Fries were reasonable, but the burger was a bit disappointing for a specialty burger place. The patty seemed fairly average although there was a moderate amount of seasoning that seemed to have been liberally applied. Combined with the Bleu Cheese dressing, it's not a bad meal, it just doesn't quite reach destination status. Also the patty was a little small relative to the overall size of the burger: there were huge amounts of lettuce and a giant bun associated which made the meat a little hard to taste. With the giant bun, I suppose the burger almost would be the literal definition of the cliché "All hat, no cattle."
The place is pretty small with a few tables on the inside, although there is outdoor seating for fine summer days. Service fell somewhere between vaguely friendly and disinterested, and was a bit on the slow side.
Overall, I'd say it's worth three stars. Head-to-head, I'd probably give a slight nod to Blue Moon over Red Mill burgers.
My pastry chef daughter and I pretty much knew we were going to eat our way through our trip to Seattle. Having had many people (and chefs) give us suggestions, we discovered places by accident more than we did on purpose
Case in point, Red Mill Burgers in the Greenwood district
We happened to have been driving back lost as usual from Fremont when we spied this cool little hole in the wall place near a bend in the road (and conveniently smashed up against a Starbucks)
We had the worst luck with actually getting IN to this place because we either were too late to get in, or it was closed and we didn't want to leave Seattle without tasting these burgers.
Seriously, every one was raving about them, best burgers EVER, so yeah, being big burger (and onion ring folk) we made a point to go there before we left the Emerald City
Hmmm...not so sure I would call that the 'best burger EVER' really
If you call a preformed patty thrown on a grill with a bun and some house made mayo, the best EVER, well, there you go, have a great time at Red Mill
Onion rings, always my barometer of goodness, missed their mark as well. I so love that fresh battered, greasy taste of the fried onion ring, well, like my mother used to make with the Aunt Jemima pancake mix as a batter. Hard to compare to your mother's cooking, you know? The cornmeal coating of these things were almost too much to handle and I don't even think they were all that hot either. Considering how popular this place is, and we got there 5 minutes after it opened, hot would have been a plus
Considering some of the amazing burger creations I have made in my own tiny little kitchen (homemade Russian sauce anyone?), I will leave this little overcooked burger place to those that don't really know any better
I love this place so much that it's actually a good thing the lines are always so long because otherwise I would eat here entirely too often!
I was really excited to have my first Red Mill burger in 7 years. Sadly, I was extremely disappointed. I had the bacon burger. I loved that the size of the burger was rather large, but dry, dry, dry. Really Red Mill? I expected better.
The rootbeer shake made up for it. The thickness was perfect and when I mean perfect... so thick the straw is useless.
This place to me is overrated simply because their burgers aren't all that great. Plus, waiting an hour for an average burger with no place to sit seems silly. I'd rather have a burgermaster, easy on the onions please.
