6 reviews for Red Lion Restaurant & Tavern
First, the 4 star rating was for the beer and atmosphere...not the food. If it was a food rating i'd give it a 2. The dining room service is hit or miss, and the bartenders aren't bad. The food i've eaten (a salad, fish and chips, and the fried pickles) is okay. It's slightly overpriced, but when you're on the company dime it's not that bad.
That's not the reason we go, they have a great selection of draft and bottled beers. It's not the flying saucer or anything, but it's never disappointed. This is one of the regular spots we hit up whenever i'm in CLT. Great for having a beer or six and unwinding after work.
Red Lion claims to be an Official Browns Backers Bar, but the rude female manager with black hair decided to tell the packed bar full of all Browns fans that she refused to change the channel from the Panthers game in hopes of 2-4 Panthers fans that may walk through the door.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone! The service is awful, the management is terrible, and the food (beef on weck) was cold and had a stale bun...by far the worst beef on wek in Charlotte, and perhaps the nation!!!
The only thing i would recommend about Red Lion is that you recommend to anyone thinking about going there to not waste their money! They will be out of business in less than a year!
Red Lion...Where do I start!? Well, I will start with the positives... The bartenders were very nice and I did like the Ranch dressing.
Okay, now the negatives!! First of all, management set the tone for my visit. Right when we walked though the door, we approached the bar to watch the Browns game and was quickly (and rudely) told that they would not be showing the Browns game at the bar, only in the dining room (Btw.. this is a Browns Backers Bar). The dining room consisted of a large projection screen TV which had a horrible picture due to the amount of light in the room, and two much smaller sets. This was not where we preferred to sit, but oh well..
Second, we were handed a lunch menu and told that we could only order from the Appetizer and Pub Fare portion of it. Apparently, the kitchen can not handle the whole lunch menu during lunch on a Sunday??? I ordered the Beef on 'Weck sandwich and the beef was cold and very fatty, and the 'Weck was stale. The fries were hot, and pretty good dipped in the Ranch:)
After many complaints from other Browns fans they decided to show the Browns game at the bar so we went and found a nice seat right in front of a large flat screen! We were pretty excited... for like 5 minutes. The game then started and we realized that we were watching the Panthers, not the Browns. We were then told that they would not be changing the TV because the was a chance that Panthers fans may show up. Well the Panthers fans did not show up but many Browns fans ended up leaving.
I did not have a good experience at Red Lion (even with the Browns winning) and I have no desire to give them a second chance. NEXT!
I'm an out-of-towner and my friends brought a group of us here.
What we loved: lots of great ales to chose from, everyone seemed happy with the alcohol choices.
Cool seating areas, cozy dark corner near the front
TVs with the games on, but not too loud and there were places you could sit without seeing the games.
Lots of group of friends, wasn't too meat market-ish... but then maybe it's just no one was shopping for me.
Is this thing on?
I need to get out more.
Ya know, I can't give the place four stars. I want to, but that just wasn't the experience.
Our server was great. I tipped appropriately. She managed our expectations effectively and professionally. A few friends and I checked the place out while killing time before our movie started at the nearby theatre.
The draft beer special that she offer upon our seating seemed to have a problem. My cocktail was half gone by the time the guys who had been sucked into the draft beer special were finally served. A free 2nd round was offered, and willingly delivered (nice customer service recovery... I guess).
I didn't do the full menu thing like I would do otherwise (limited time window). Fried pickles were okay... at least they were chips and not spears (a plus), but the batter could have used some cayenne.
Seems to be a nice, comfortable deal... maybe a regular dining experience would have yielded a higher rating, but given their proximity to a theatre, they had best get used to meeting the needs and expectations of patrons killing short time periods before movie showings.
It's average. The food is hit and miss, however the Toasted Turkey Sandwich is really good. The dinning room service is always slow so if you are there for a quick lunch it isn't going to happen. The bar service is much better and they do have some unique beers. With all of that said I do end up here once a month for lunch.
