If you are traveling with a dog, the Red Lion is a must. The beach just outside the hotel is a Disneyland for Dogs. And during my stay, the pet owners were considerate, responsible, and made sure they left the beach as clean or cleaner than when they found it.
The "pet-friendly" hotels I've stayed at before were dingy, run-down overpriced roach traps -- and most of those wouldn't take pets over 30 lbs. I've got a 70-pound retriever, and he was warmly welcomed by the staff. The pet-friendly rooms show a bit more "wear-and-tear" than other rooms, but they were clean, odor-free, and quite comfortable.
Try to book online, though http://Hotels.com or Expedia -- you will get much better rates. (The front desk even advises this!)

It's best during the week. This is a lovely Red Lion. It has a swimming pool, ho ttub, nice lounge and dining room.
My rooms were always mor ethan I needed, a single traveler passingthrough on my way to see the Olympic Peninsula.
Staff is very friendly and open. easy to find and there is lots of parking.

This is the only place I would consider staying at in Port Angeles. We had a waterfront room view for the 4th of July weekend. The patio chairs made it so easy to relax and watch the fireworks in comfort. There was a small festival where we could hear music and get into the spirit of things. The room is of Hilton-hotel quality, which is a compliment. The only strange thing are the pillows; they are not standard size, just a small, practically square shape. The pillowtop mattress was quite comfy.
There was a nice tv armoire, microwave and minifridge; perfect for storing your snacks/drinks. The hotel location is prime; take a walk on the path lining the shore, stumble a block away to a few restaurants/bars, etc.
I did not pay for the room, but $200 a night would be a bit steep, considering it's Port Angeles. But still, no way would I stay anywhere else; any other option is a sad-looking motel way past its prime.
This review is for the Port Angeles Crabhouse which apparently was attached to the Red Lion Hotel. I guess I knew this as I did see the Red Lion insignia on the napkins here.
Driving along the Olympic National Park peninsula and we were starting the get hungry. This probably wouldn't have been my first choice to eat, but we didn't know what kind of towns we would hit along the way and once the hunger hits, it's time to eat.
This place can best be described as wanting to be a diner, but coming across more as a Friday's or Bennigans. Maybe that sounds nasty. I'm not trying to be. The food was fine and the service was pleasant enough.
Dad and I each ordered a bowl of chowder and split the dungeness crab sandwich with a side of fries. Figured if the name of this place was the Port Angeles Crabhouse, we might as well order something with crab in it. Weird part was, there wasn't a ton of fish on this menu.
The soup was good. Not the best, but not the worst chowder I've ever had. The sandwich was much better than I thought it would be. It was more of a hot crab salad, but it hit the spot.
All in all as far as lunches go, you can probably do better. I was mad because as we were heading west on 101 just a short few miles down the road, we passed a place called Granny's Cafe which looked like it would have been better. I'll hit that place the next time out this way.
Very dated rooms, smelly hallways, old poly bedspreads...They completely sucker you into a very high rate, due to lack of other hotel options. I realize they are experiencing "Twilight" mania, maybe they should invest some of that cash they are raking in to update the property.
Ate lunch at the Crabhouse which is attached to the Red Lion Hotel. The location was convenient, the service was friendly. My bf got the fish and chips... there was 2 pieces of fish for $14 and a tub load of fries... you would want it the other way around, not so. I had the french Dip and that was good, except for the Swiss cheese on it was not melted... the Aus ju dip was great in flavor, I was dipping my french fries in it! Over all... It was an ok lunch, for being called the Crabhouse, you would think there would be some fish items on the menu.... besides the fish and chips. We were greatly disappointed when we came to PA and were looking for a cool dive place with great food... We were going to go the the HAVEN but it was closed on Sundays.... who closes during the weekend of the SUMMER when your an aqua town!!?!?!?

For what you pay for a room in this small town, this is probably as best as you'll get. The location is within walking distance of "downtown" and the staff is friendly. Otherwise, there isn't anything extraordinary about this hotel. Having stayed in a 1st floor room facing the parking lot, it did get occasionally loud late in the night.
It made for a great base for the NODM, where we were able to walk 2 min from the finish line to our hotel room for a shower.

Tell you what, if you end up having to travel with two exceedingly large dogs, this place is darn near impossible to beat. Yes, that's right -- they accept animals for just a tiny charge, and they don't care how big your dogs are. Did I mention we had two of them?
We weren't in our room much -- the whole idea was that we were going to take a trip without the dogs until bad news conspired and it became simpler to just bring them along (they like the outdoors anyway so why not). We were there for the forest so we only came back to the room to crash, but it was comfortable and quiet and there's room service, though we didn't take advantage of that. In the morning it was very nice to walk the dogs on the walkway right on the bay. Beats a motel parking lot by a mile.
A little pricey but did I mention they take dogs?

I was in Port Angeles on business, so someone else was paying for me and it was a corporate rate. You can't beat the view from the waterside rooms that look out onto the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Canada.
The rooms are large with a balcony overlooking the shoreline. There is a lovely walking path along the shoreline. And since it's near the ferry landing to British Columbia, shops and restaurants are a short stroll.
This is not the Ritz-Carlton, but the view is the star.
I started writing a long review about this place but I figured no one is going to bother reading it all; because face it. I usually don't.
PROS:
waterfront view rooms
in "downtown"
walking distance to local shops
half block from ferry terminal
next to walking/running/biking trail
beach...ish when its low tide and seaweed free
Free WiFi
small pool and hot tub
mini-fridge and microwave
CONS:
$250+ for view rooms (not worth it)
TV sucks, local channels only (I'm stuck here for a month so it matters)
WiFi - you get what you pay for
the pillowtop bed is hard. not "hotel quality"
2 washing machines, 1 working dryer
housekeeping is sloppy
It's pushing 2.5 STARS but I'll give it 3.
I stayed here for just one night and had no problems with it at all. I hear they have redesigned the rooms recently, so that was nice. The room was clean and well stocked with towels and such.
On a high note, the shampoo, conditioner, and lotion in the little bottles in the room were from Bath & Body Works. On a low note, the scent kind of made me think of what a cheap hooker would smell like.
Our room had two queen beds with 4 pillows on each. The pillows were a little small for my taste, but then again I'm used to a huge king sized bed at home.
We had a first floor room facing the ocean and were only slightly disturbed by the upstairs neighbors. They were awake and walking around until 2 or 3 AM and I was in bed by 10:30. The view was amazing and I could see all the way to Canada. Outside of our room there was a nice patch of grass and what looked like a great path that went along the water.
I'd definitely stay here again.

~Only thing I found was a pain, No ATM's close, but found bank 2blocks away~ & nocon/breakfast :(
From my notes on September 12, 2004.
The Red Lion had "free wi-fi", and we saved even more thru an additional AAA discount which they didn't include in the price quote over the phone, unlike the other places. So far, so good.
When we arrived (it was only two blocks from the other hotels) we found a great reception girl, not only was she very nice, but I watched her stay calm thru great stress events, crowds, cranky people and such.
Part of the deal was a refrigerator and microwave in the room. When we entered, we noticed that the promised refrigerator was not in room. However, I had noticed that several other rooms had them as we wandered thru the halls killing time until the maids were done with our room.
But the bed was GREAT! It was a plush pillowtop, and I slept better on that bed than any other hotel bed (except St. Martin's Lane in London).
Unfortunately, there were other issues with the room. The TV only had 22 channels w/ 5 news & 5 local information adds & 1 CBC. Since we don't have cable or reception at home, we look forward to vacations simply for the TV access and commercials.
But the promised wi-fi was non-existent. The front desk claimed there was a bandwidth problem, but we tried several times at different hours and again in the morning. I kept getting put on hold when I called the support line. My husband deduced the problem to be with the router, and the hotel staff aren't trained to either identify nor fix such issues. I sent them email about this.
Oddly enough, we had to eat out of the garbage can for dinner that evening. We had chosen to eat a light dinner of cheese and crackers and salami, but since we had no refrigerator, we put ice in a trash can to keep it cold until we were ready to dine.

Let me start by saying that we were traveling off season and got a great rate on a waterfront room. I can understand that staying on the 'parking lot' side of the hotel would be an entirely different experience, but we could not have been happier with our room. The room itself was not huge, but a decent size and clean and comfortable. But the winning feature was the view! Sunsets were spectacular. The jogging path passed by our ground floor room. While enjoying coffee on the patio one morning, we were literally surprised by two visiting raccoons! They came right up to us, expecting their share of our morning doughnuts! All in all, we could not have asked for more. Good room made spectacular by an awesome view.
The lobby had a fun mountain lodge feel to it, but it was kinda weird that it was set apart from the rest of the hotel. Situated in the cute part of town, right next to the ferry terminal going to Victoria. The onsite CrabHouse restaurant looked popular, but I didn't stay for dinner since I had to make it to Olympia that night.

Two friends and I stayed at the Red Lion for a night on a short trip to the Olympic National Park. The location right on the water made the Red Lion look promising. But there were several strikes against it, and I would not stay there again.
First, the room we got was in the motel-style part of the Hotel. Our first floor room had a door right out to the parking lot, which is fine if you're expecting it but for about $200 per night we were not expecting it. Second, the room smelled overwhelmingly musty. Third, the location is not all its cracked up to be. On our Saturday night stay, we attempted for over an hour and a half to find someplace decent to eat. We quickly decided on nearby Bella Italia, but so had everyone else in town. It was booked through the next 2 hours. We wandered around the sad streets of Port Angeles for a while and decided the Crabhouse at the Red Lion would have to do. Very long story short, the dining room was full and we sat in the bar trying to get the attention of the overwhelmed and impolite staff for over 30 minutes. In the end we went back to Bella Italia and waited. (It was excellent, by the way.) Later that night, we fell asleep to the sounds of people drinking in the parking lot.
Besides the musty smell, the room itself was nice. It was fairly large with marble counters and a clean bathroom. The beds were very comfortable.
I usually choose hotels in the city center of places in order to get the best experience. Port Angeles is an exception to this rule. The port area looks like it may have been nice a few decades ago, but now it's just depressing. Next time, I will choose one of the hotels on highway 101 or another town.
