Red Koi in Coral Gables is a trendy restaurant that has outstanding Thai food, good sushi, and a great club vibe with a great DJ to boot.
My friends and I met up for a Birthday Party with reservations to sit in the loft at 9:30 pm (on purpose). I can see why the Birthday Girl chose this particular restaurant but I would have sat downstairs. I was not able to hear anything anyone was telling me (including the waitress) and at about 10:30 the lights went out and I had to hold my phone over the sushi to tell what I was eating.
That aside, I had an incredible experience. We started with a bottle of Rioja for a fair price. The bartender was very friendly and even let us sample some of the house sake infused with pineapple. The wine was great but the sake was served cold and I prefer my piping hot.
I started the Tom Yum Goong soup and found it to be a bit too lemony but good. The shrimp was slightly overcooked but I think it was still a very good representation of the dish.
We moved on to the main course which arrived before the sushi (the waitress apparently told me the bar was way behind but I couldn't hear her). I ordered the Masaman based on Ivonne Marie C's review and it was FANTASTIC. Easily the BEST Masaman curry I have ever had. I ordered it with beef. It was a twist on my favorite Thai dish with plenty of cashews (instead of peanuts), spice, and avocado adding another dimension of richness with an apparent sweetness added. It simultaneously hit the sweet spot and amped up the endorphine rush due to the heat...WOW!
The sushi finally arrived and it was well worth the wait. The lobster rolls were decadent but the Spicy Tuna Lovers fell short because the Tuna was not the best quality - faux pas for a suhsi bar. Spicy tuna is my yard stick for sushi bars and this did not cut the muster. Furthermore, the waitress recommended this over the regular Spicy Tuna because of the pieces of tuna covering the rolls.
Aside from the difficult time parking, the highly lemony soup with the overcooked shrimp and the tough tuna, I think that Red Koi is a fantastic spot and an absolute MUST for Masaman Curry Lovers. The price (under $100 for bottle of wine, 2 soups, 2 rolls, and entree'), service, and vibe will bring me back. Next time I go I will dress more appropriately (no earth tones upstairs - think club chic) and arrive earlier to head up after dinner for some dancing. I can probably last another month before I have to have my Masaman fix so I'll report back on my second visit then.
I ordered here with a friend of mine who ate in one time and liked it. I didn't order sushi because I was scared with delivery it might not arrive as fresh. So I opted for Thai food, the next best thing. I ordered the chicken pad thai and a seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was bigger then I thought because it's usually pretty tiny and it was very tasty and fresh. The Chicken Pad Thai was just okay. I honestly have had better and the price here was about 12-14 for this I go to Bangock on 40th street, and it's much tastier.
I would try this place again though, for sushi, but I would dine in next time.
On my profile I wrote that my last meal on earth would be the Gables roll, however I didn't mention it was from Red Koi! Salmon, crab, shrimp, cucumber, avocado, masago and cream cheese roll with eel sauce and spicy mayo...I'm totally having a foodgasm just thinking about it!
Conveniently 2 blocks away from my job, Red Koi is my go to spot for sushi in the Gables. I am a fan of the tuna tartar, chicken red curry and lunch combo #3. I love the decor and adore the upstairs lounge; has a grown and sexy vibe to it. Great place to lounge and have drinks and rolls with friends or a nice date. The parking situation sucks simply because it's Coral Gables; however the Coral Gables parking gods have always blessed me with parking on miracle mile!
If your into Americanized "sushi" Red Koi is the place for you. The shrimp pad thai is good and they're lunch specials are great. Loving the Rainbow roll. If you want a fast decent lunch Red Koi would be the ideal place.
YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!
If I see avocado as an ingredient in any dish I am automatically ordering it, and the masaman curry had tons - woo hoo!!!. The lunch serving comes with soup or salad; I had salad w/peanut dressing and it was purrrrrrrrrrfect!!!
When I emphasize letters this much it must mean that I liked my lunch THAT much!!!!!!!!
The service was good and attentive. We placed our order immediately, everything came out quickly; my glass was never empty; I can just keep going and going about all the staff and how on point they were.
My friend and I got there close to 12:45p on a Friday, and there was no wait, It was actually a bit empty for lunch hour - which means, not that many people know about this place. Get the word out my friends - they actually have a lunch special for only $5!! And the other items in the complete lunch menu are all within $12 or less - large portions. Definitely a must do again.
Great place, great food, great service, great company... yeah, I had a great lunch!
**I would def. give this place 5 stars, I'm just getting more selective on who gets the top honors - so def qualify Red Koi as 4.5+ stars
I've always been pleased with the service and the food from Red Koi. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. On my first visit during lunchtime, I took a friend from out of town who was craving sushi. We both had the Bangkok Shrimp, which is shrimp tempura with a creamy, spicy sauce (not too spicy) on a bed of delicious greens...we finished both our plates. In addition, she ordered two rolls, one of which was the WOW and wow, it was so delicious. I had the avocado salad, which was a dream...I've been back for take-out and lunch with colleagues and everyone I've taken has enjoyed it. Red Koi executes 'umami' well.
LOVED IT!
We are Thai food fanatics and eat Thai food at least 3 times a week at different restuarants. We are always looking for new places to try.
We went to Red Koi last night for dinner. We ordered edamame, they gave us a nice size bowl, salad with peanut dressing to start. The peanut dressing was home made and had a little bit of spice which added a tasty unique flare. We had the volcano chicken which was made to perfection. The chicken was crispy and clean cut white meat pieces. We also had the chicken Massaman Curry another great dish. The dish had the right amount of avocado, cashews and onions. The dinner portions are pretty large. We had their tempura cheesecake for dessert and was good but a little frozen in the center.
The service and staff get 5 stars! They were very nice and attentive.
The prices were great especially for the area.
We give the Red Koi 4 Stars and would totally recommend to all our friends and family. Lucky for us they deliver to our house! =)
Service, food, and parking. Usually the three points I think about when I write a review. Since my hubby loves this place and up until recently I couldn't make it for lunch, I had never been so today I insisted he take me since I was in the area with him.
The service is amazingly awesome. I really, truly was surprised at the attentiveness of every person who worked there that crossed our table would ask us if we needed refills or were picking plates up and asking if we needed anything.
As for my box, it came with Miso soup - delicious. Its hard to screw up Miso soup. I had the one that included Sushi, Sashimi and a roll. Lets see, the food was good, the only couple of 'buts' would be the tuna, I am not a huge fan because it can have that fishy taste, and this one did. The other 'but' was there was a teeeeeny weeeeeenie pinch of wasabi. Now, this girl loves her Wasabi and Gari. Don't skimp please.
Next time I will definitely try the Thai, I hear its most delicious!
(If you were wondering about the parking, its on Miracle Mile so its really a matter of luck and what time you happen to go)
I'm a tuna lover (the real deal NOT canned) and imagine my surprise when I open the menu and see a roll called TUNA LOVER! Yes!!! It was a spicy tuna roll with tuna on top. Sounds simple I know but you wouldn't believe how cheap some sushi joints are with their tuna. If there was a roll perfect for me on the menu there will probably be one for you. Great location and the 2nd floor is fun for b-day parties.
I was waiting to try this place for a while now. I live in the Gables and would frequently drive by. However, the sight of people pouring out of the restaurant sort of drove me away. I decided to wait until the hype died down a bit. (the ONLY restaurant I am willing to tolerate being so busy is Houston's...im a HUGE prime rib lover...its my thing, let it go).
Anyway, last night was really enjoyable...we were greeted nicely at the door, our table that we reserved was ready for the six of us (two from the Elite 8 couldn't go).
Started off with the Tom Kha Gai (TKG) (which i thought was a mistake since the a/c wasn't working...I know i know it sounds horrible, but actually it wasn't that bad...owners quickly placed fans and it helped...a little)
back to the food, the TKG was really tasty, i bit thick I thought at first, but after a good swirl everything incorporated nicely. Now the really really good part. The duck Pad Thai...omg this was outstanding...hearty, tasty, well seasoned (two can share)..they give a shit load of duck, I mean big ol chunks!
then for dessert we had the cliche Thai Donuts which were only bettered by one of my friends eating the condensed milk with a spoon!!
Great place, great environment, awesome music...nice lounge upstairs
I've been to Red Koi quite a few times... I work in the area and know I can pretty much count on it for yummy sushi or Thai, whatever I may be in the mood for.
This is the place I discovered I LOVE Seaweed salad... and the pad Thai with shrimp is awesome!
I suggest this place for anyone who dislikes other sushi restaurants in the area like... Sushi Maki as much as I do.
Red Koi's lunch specials are an awesome bargain. Their Pad Thai is nothing spectacular, but the Massaman Curry and Panang Curry are awesome. Red Koi serves brown rice for no extra charge, so they get a plus from me.
It's a cutesy restaurant too. There is a set of stairs by the front door...I wonder where it leads to?
Plenty of sake choices, all expensive but one (probably not worth drinking).
What an amazing place to spend some of your time. The ambiance is sweet without being overbearing, the service is friendly and the food is delicious.
I was lucky enough to host a party in the upstairs lounge in the middle of June and what a treat! We had more then enough food for everyone, drinks came out on time and the owners took care to come by and ask us how we liked everything, and if there was anything else they could do.
You get the sense that they really care about their service and the experience you have while you are there.
Thumbs way up! from me.. and I hear they are going to start having a Karaoke night! Fun fun!
I came here with a friend on Halloween for dinner before we went out. She had the pork pad thai, and I had a couple different sushi rolls but I can't remember the names of them. I had a bite of her pad thai which was yummy, and I loved my rolls as well. They also had these "halloween cocktails" made from this sake called Ty Ku and this one mixture called "the ring martini" was DELICIOUS. My friend and I had a great dinner and I will be back to this place soon.
On girls' night, Red Koi is always an option. The place is never packed; I've always visited without having a reservation and have been seated immediately. We like that even on busy nights, we can hear ourselves talking and if the night drags we can visit the upstairs lounge for a little dancing and after dinner drink.
The dim lighting and vibrant ambiance promotes relaxation. There is inside and outside seating for those of you who are yet to kick the smoking habit.
I've been to a few private events in the upstairs lounge usually closed during dinner. (Opens 10pm - 2 am) The dark grey and rectangular velvety backless seating is semi comfortable, but steps away from your own private bar, so if your waiter is taking too long you can get one yourself.
If this sounds like your type of place, you can host events like your birthday or a business meeting considering the group is not too large, 50 plus would be too big a crowd. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. I've never tried any of the Thai dishes but do recommend the spicy crab roll, with avocado, tempura flakes, masago and spicy mayo. Another favorite is the Red Dragon, a specialty roll with tuna, avocado, asparagus, masago with tuna on top and eel sauce that will have you licking your chop sticks.
I must admit, Red Koi has caught my eye, and personal attention.
After spending an amazing saturday night at this new Coral Gables hot spot, my heart has re-found the love that used to be the Gables.
Saturday was there one year anniversary- and they did it big. Free TOP shelf drinks from 8-10pm. TOP shelf?! Since when is any bar in Miami classy enough for top shelf FREE drinks?
The class alone had me shocked, awed and quoting Andy Samberg I almost jizzed in my pants.
Their staff, bartenders, owners, and managers represented the 12 month old Restaurant in the highest of trend, fashion and hottness.
I will return, Kareoke perhaps?
I come here at least twice a week and never wrote a review ??? What an oversight -
We truly enjoy this place because they serve good sushi and the sevice is very good. They Thai is also quite palatable. I would submit to anyone within reasonable distance who is craving good sushi or thai served with a smile and at a decent price, to make their way to Red Koi-
I always walk away satisfied and conviced that I will return.
In the evenings the second floor becomes a lounge, a bit loud for my liking but pretty happening indeed.
Went to Red Koi last night with a group to celebrate a friend's birthday.
We had reservations for the upstairs lounge which has a nice modern/comfy decor and feel to it. Music wasn't playing too loudly yet and the playoff game was on TV so that was a nice bonus for us sports lovers ;)
Our server, Juan, was very attentive and made sure to bring us our drinks right away. Once we ordered our food that came pretty quick too. The food was great! I had the Bangkok shrimp was was fantastic! It reminded me a little bit of the calamari salad at China Grill but with shrimp...yum! I also had a sushi roll called the Santini which was fantastic and I also tried some of my husband's roll called the Angel Hair which was awesome! Seems that everyone at our table enjoyed their food. The only dish that wasn't finished was some Thai chicken dish that apparently had too much coconut or something in it for my friend's taste. I didn't eat it though, so can't say much about that...
Oh! The Thai Doughnuts were also fantastic! There was a little chocolate swirl in the dipping sauce which was a nice touch :)
We stayed until the lights dimmed down, music got louder, and lounge got fairly full. The music was a fun mix of house, hip hop, reggae, and Spanish. We left close to 1AM and the place was still fairly full with some people dancing and most just standing around, drinking, and having a good time.
The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is that it was more expensive than I thought it would be. Per couple (there were 4 couples) it came out to $160! I know we ate a lot and had a few drinks each, but still...the guys were just drinking beer!
Oh well...I guess $ matters, but not when it is spent with good company and making good memories with friends ;)
Red Koi is a quick, tasty and affordable lunch spot. I started with miso soup and a spring roll... both had tons of flavor. For the meal I had Pad Thai tofu and it was excellent. Portions were generous, service was average.
All this great food for $11.94! I will definitely be back.
usually too much anticipation of something leaves one inevitably disappointed, unfortunately that was the case of my meal at Red Koi. the food was decent but not as good as I'd expected and the prices were a little higher then I'd planned as well (that's mostly the wine), however the service was pretty good.
we started with the Hamachi Jalapeno appetizer which was very tasty - although I must warn that it is hot, and not just the jalapenos themselves but the sauce as well. we then proceeded to share the Beauty Roll (tuna, salmon, whitefish, crab, asparagus, masago & ponzu sauce), which was good but may have actually had too many things in it that ended up being just a jumble of flavors. then we split the shrimp pad thai...it was flavorful but lacked enough sauce making it dry causing the noodles to tend to stick together.
my experience was not bad but was certainly nothing memorable or worth going out of my way for. but they do have some interesting looking and inexpensive lunch specials which may be enough to lure me back to give it another shot.
Service: Wonderful...especially when the waiter gave me a purse hanger for my purse
Food: Very good...umm..yes it was good.
Drinks: I had the thai ice tea...yummyyyyy
Environment: ambiance can be romantic ..yet playful
Oh and upstair is a lounge...do ck it out!
I love red koi. I love the sushi; I love the lounge area; I love the music. I have come to a ton of birthdays and girl nights here and I always have a good time. I think this has been a great addition to Coral Gables and I'm really happy that it has stayed in place. The service is always great and the servers are very attentive and nice.
so this place is great... sushi and thai trendy restaurant in the gables, with a full bar. ive been several times for both lunch and dinner. and this past friday my friend celebrated her birthday there (along with about 3 other parties going on)
we had 2 tables in the upstairs lounge. they let you order from the regular menu and my friend had also ordered an assorted platter so ppl at the party had somethings to munch on. she had also arranged bottles of vodka and champagne available for her guests.
the dj had everyone dancing all night, every song was a good song! we closed the place down bc we were having so much fun.
my only gripe was our bar tab. we had ordered drinks at the bar and the bill said $80 but then under that the amount due was $92.80. what was the extra 12.80? it didnt say tip included and of course by 2 am and a nice buzz going no one thought to look closely and we left an additional 18 tip. i hate when bars include tip and dont specify it, totally not cool to be taking advantage of the under the influence patrons.
This place gives some serious competition to Bangkok Bangkok, the go-to Thai place in the Gables. I went here for lunch on a weekday and I was in-and-out in less than hour.
Both the food and service were great. It wasn't too busy. The chicken pad thai dish was a tasty generous helping. The bill was reasonable for two. They have lunch specials on both susi and thai food.
The ambiance was nice and it was just the right place for two friends to catch-up over some lunch. It also looks like it could be a hot spot for a dinner date too with all of the red and black details.
Red Koi is affordable and offers delicious thai food right on Miracle Mile for the perfect Gables lunch hour!
I love Red Koi! The sushi they have is top notch. I absolutely love their volcano roll (probably one of the best I've had) and the Angel Hair. Their tuna tartar is phenomenal! It is a two floor restaurant with tables outside facing Miracle Mile. During the evenings (at least on Friday and Saturday) the turn into a lounge with a DJ. It is a great place to unwind after a long work week and have some good food and drinks. I highly recommend it.
The duck red curry was delicious! Rich, savory, and flavorful. It took about 30 minutes for the food to come out and the serving size was so big I only finished half. If you're a party of 3, order 2 dishes and share.
the rolls were exceptional....some of the best service we've had in Miami
