Yelped for the best Chinese in our half of the city, and found it! It's mandarin, with all the typical americanized dishes my simple pallete prefers from time to time.
Kicked things off with the sampler appetizer platter, which included among other things, the best crab rangoons I've ever consumed, with an unusually healthy portion of fresh crab. Followed that with General Tsos chicken, which I could likely eat every day for the rest of life. The perfect level of spice, the bite size pieces were nice, and all with a side of brown rice.
Also shared the sesame chicken - historically my favorite dish of this genre - and while not the best I've had, it was excellent.
Great location, just south of the F line at Market. Possibly the best value in any food genre I've had in the City.
Save me a seat!
Really glad we came here on Friday night. Not only did we get there before a rush of people showed up, but it really hit the spot.
We ordered the green onion pancake that people have mentioned and it was my favorite green onion pancake that I can recall having in SF, Portland, Seattle... many many cities. :) Thick, crisp on the outside, and a little bit doughy on the inside. YUM!
The combination wonton soup was done well, and came out steaming hot in a huge white bowl. General Tso's chicken tasted great - not too greasy and not like heavy lumps of densely battered meat - these were light, slightly crispy, and just the right amount of sauce. We also ordered the Spicy salt and pepper soft shell crab to try something different instead of getting salt and pepper calamari. It was a delicious choice - 3 whole soft shell crabs, love the mix of garlic and peppers liberally sprinkled on top.
Overall - food was great and inexpensive, service was attentive and just right.
This is my come-too inexpensive chinese restaurant in this area, when I'm in a Chinese food mood. There are only two dishes that I always get, when I come here. The Basil with chicken or Double Mushroom chicken.
So, one fine saturday, for lunch I decided to try something else for a change...I ordered the Spicy Hunan Fish.... tasty, but slightly salty, which was a bit overpower, all in all I got through it and my blood pressure returned to normal.
I like this place, inexpensive lunch, the staff are friendly, the seating is quick and the soup is quick to get to the table as well, and its very clean, {although, if I could make one crucial suggestion, go easy on the cleaning supplies, they use are very strong! to the point of smelling it from three doors down} Other than this, I'll return for the basil chicken or DM chicken.
even as I am writing this, I am still unsure how many stars Red Jade will get.
It is the best chinese delivery I have found so far in San Francisco. That being said, I was slightly disappointed. Green beans were good, but sweet for some reason? App combo plate was pretty good. Braised tofu...pretty bad. It was really bitter, and nothing I did seemed to make it taste any better. As well, they put the tofu (which was in a very liquidy sauce) in a cardboard takeout carton, and it leaked through! (completely pooled in the bag, and i was so happy the bag had no holes)
But also got the free steamed pork buns and sesame balls, both of which were good. Delivery was fast as well.
I will order from again, just have to work on refining my choices
I had a craving for Chinese after dropping off a friend, and looked up this restuarant yelp at the Safeway at 14th/Church, so decided to head here.
I ordered simple - General Tso's and a small rice. Service was quick, there is a $10.00 minimum for using credit but the waiter was going to let me do credit with my order despite it coming out to $9.60.
I'm usually a fan of big bang for buck, and this was pretty tasty and a pretty good bang for your buck.
The only downside really - the fortune cookie had no fortune. Seriously? Perhaps got cut due to the economy? A bad lot in the fortune cookie batch? Who knows.
Oh, lastly, this is actually also a sit down restaurant, not just a delivery place.
Clean, courteous, convenient. The staff is always amiable and prompt. I would suggest coming for lunch - can't beat the lunch specials: 6$ gets you a hearty entree plus free soup.
Overral, this is one of the better Chinese places in the area. Be adventurous and try something different like the chicken wrapped in lettuce - different and delicious.
I came here on this past Monday night with some friends after a brutal cardio work out at 24 hour fitness down the street. This was my first experience eating at Red Jade and as many of you know, I am open to all sorts of experiences.
First impressions:
1) Clean
2) Fast seating
3) Moderately priced
4) Well-prepared food
Yet, the staff, while initially courteous, mixed up our order forgot our duck and then, after forgetting our duck told us that the KITCHEN WAS CLOSED....*breathe*....okay, I'm practicing ZEN....and going to my happy place now.
The chicken and sweet corn soup is tasty, not at all oily. The spicy salted spare ribs were also very tasted. The food came out quickly.
I hope to go back to try additional things on the menu to provide some more feedback.
I would say the only thing I liked about this was the Crab Rangoon I ordered.
The Mongolian Beef was yucky. I tasted one bite and then threw it in the fridge to where I eventually just tossed it out.
The chinese broccoli was wayyy to soggy for its own good. And the oyster sauce I requested with it was soo watered down that it didn't taste so great.
The only other perk to this is they gave me free BBQ Pork Buns and sesame bun with this.
Your typical nasty greasy sugary thick and msg'ee Chinese food. We fried rice passable as Panda's and wonton soup, which wasn't half-bad actually. We ordered kung pao chicken and beef in black bean sauce and, I kid you not, the only difference was chicken and peanuts in one, and beef -- if you can call that beef -- in the other.
Then again, we did ask for it, ordering Chinese food from just about anywhere. Yeah, spoiled by San Tung.
All that said, we scarfed it proper. It came with free sesame balls, pork buns, and not insignificant indigestion.
For quick, low cost delivery, Red Jade is the best Chinese in Lower Haight. Took about 15 minutes from phone to door, arrived hot and tasted delicious. I highly recommend the General Tso's Tofu - crispy, sweet, spicy perfection.
Also, as others have said, the free pork buns and dessert ice the cake. They even mark them "free" so you don't think you paid for something you didn't order. Priceless.
Still seeking a new favorite chinese restaurant after New Sun Hong Kong dropped the ball earlier this year,we decided to give this place a shot, since it was,by chance one of the few chinese restaurants on the street we were on.
We ordered what we usually get-beef chow fun and chicken fried rice. Also an order of sweet&sour pork.It started out good, with the rice being the first plate brought to the table, but was not meant to be.The old addage "anything tastes good when you're hungry" comes to mind.I was blinded by my hunger at first, but quickly realized it.
I've had better flavored food at Mr.Chaus.Everything here was either bland or overly salty.I wont be going back for seconds.
These guys turn out really solid food. I've ordered delivery a few times. Notes:
* The standalone eggplant dish is awesome -- well-cooked, generous portions of eggplant
* Free pork buns with large orders? Yes sir!
* I don't normally like General Tzo's, but Red Jade managed to serve up some big chunks of chicken that were lightly dipped in sweet sauce. Nice.
* Big dumplings. Score.
* Someone ordered the Hong Kong-style noodles with seafood. Not really a hit with the table. Noodles were soggy and the seafood was just sort of tossed on top of the everything. I'd avoid in the future.
I should have read some other reviews on here a little closer before ordering because the quality of the chicken was not great. I have had better takeout with much better quality meat (Ah Lin, for one). The things we ordered - General Tso's chicken and appetizer sampler with pot stickers, egg roll and crab rangoon - were mediocre at best.
The good points were the people that worked there were friendly, very quick delivery, and the free sesame balls they throw in for dessert.
Christ on crutches! Now that's some gourmet Chinese delivery!
Crab rangoons- delish!
Chicken chow mein- they give you a crap ton and it's those thick noodles. None of that Panda Express string noodle bs.
Sweet and sour pork- yum!
And the icing on the cake...2 free sesame balls and 2 free pork buns if you order delivery. Hell ya!
And damn, did they just deliver in 10 minutes?? Oh yes they did.
Something I learned while living in San Francisco. The best Chinese food may not be in Chinatown. We took a friend's recommendation and gave Red Jade shot. I am glad we did. This place is now our favorite Chinese restaurant in San Francisco.
Came here on the recommendation of Sam S. My dining companion for the evening is a meat-eater and reluctantly dines out at veg restaurants with me, but he feels much more comfortable when he can order meat, so this was a happy medium.
He got the peking duck and enjoyed it. I got the kung pao tofu (my favourite dish to get at any Chinese restaurant) and it was pretty stellar.
The tofu itself was delicious - cooked quite well. Perfect amount of water chestnuts and peanuts. The kung pao part was not as spicy as I would have liked. Granted, I like SPICY, much more than the average person, but I expected it to have a little more kick. Still, good, regardless.
Would have loved to try the garlic spinach, but I'm relatively certain they don't use vegan butter. So yeah, not phenomenal, but certainly not bad, and there is an extensive veg selection.
Tried this place today, still on my search for delicious Chinese food in SF [who would have thought it would be such a strenuous mission]. This place is the best I've found so far, but that surely isn't saying much.
The good - really good hot and sour soup & crab rangoon.
The bad - The meat left something to be desired. My bf and I both ordered a chicken dish, and though they were different, neither was very satisfying. I had the sweet & sour and part of it was good, like every fourth bite maybe? I think they just need higher quality meat. It would make a world of difference.
I know I will return, but I will stick to veggie dishes and appetizers.
Feeling sick again, time for Chinese food. And guess what I realized? You can order online! The whole thing, and you get a confirmation email and everything.
So cool.

Why do I always crave Chinese food when I'm sick? Who knows.
I have hardly ever eaten inside this… Read more »
first time I ordered and I am very happy. Food was delivered fast and hot.
Lemon chicken: vgood, but was like eating lemon candy
Sweet and sour chicken: very good
chive pancake: very good!!
pork buns were free and good
pecking duck is never good unless you are having it AT a good Chinese restaurant, I won't be ordering that again
Will be ordering from them again for sure
This place is great, reliable & really fast!
I have ordered from them a few times now and they are always really quick and deliver faster than the estimated time. They are value for money and the food is pretty darn good.
I am writing this review after deciding to try somewhere else for a change and having it take all night and no food (see my review for Big Lantern for the same day). Whilst bitching about them in that review I placed another order and had it delivered before I had even finished my review for the other restaurant!!
That is fantastic service in my books!!!! Even gave them a generous tip for having made my night in the end.
Check please...
That's the last time I take culinary advice from a Muni driver.
I was really hoping this place was going to get me out of my crummy Sf Chinese mall food experience I have had as of late. Hey don't hate - I did read the Fortune Cookie Chronicles there's some truth to my statement.
OK, the place was packed for lunch and it was your blue collar crowd which implies large portion at a good value. The service was good even though they got my order wrong: I wanted String beans not braised beans and the crispy tofu not so crispy. The stir-fried prawns with Jade greens more green then Jade-not to sound like Gorge but four prawns!!! I did like their salt and paper pork which was juicy and plentiful and this is one of my favorite dishes and Red Jade's menu still has plenty of classics that I'm willing to try.
I guess still in a Chinese funk for now.
Tried a couple of items on the menu - Shrimp in Black Bean Sauce and Kung Pao Tofu, and was disappointed that the sauces for both items were so insipid. Panda Express food tastes much better and is cheaper too!
While the food is OK, just OK, my mother in law used a credit card for an order only to have it used to buy everyone's meal that night to the toon of thousands. Obviously there was a thief on staff that was pulling a scam, but the management was totally unhelpful or in the least bit apologetic! We now boycott this crooked establishment!
Consistently decent Chinese food. My wife and I often order delivery from Red Jade. It's not the best in the city but it's decent quality, and affordable, and fast.
Your standard crappy Chinese fast food. It would be edible enough to forgive if not for the horrifically rude service. The manager actually rolled her eyes and said "Godddd" like a petulant teenager when I asked for sweet and sour sauce as she passed.
I'm really torn between three and four stars. This place is the reason half stars should be allowed.
To start off this place has some solid food. That being said, it can be hit and miss depending on what you order. My friend and I started with the combination appetizer plate. 4 stars for the egg rolls and pot stickers, but I was not feeling the crab rangoon or the chicken wings. For the main course we ordered fried rice, Mongolian beef and the original dry fried chicken. The Mongolian beef was amazing, and the rice was good as well. But once again, the chicken left me disappointed.
This place is good, what you order is the trick. I'm definitely going back.
Great food. I got the Mongolian Lamb and Pot Stickers. 15.00 for both total and ate half of the 6 huge pot stickers and plenty of food left over for the exact same meal tomorrow.
Good quick service and free Tea.
Had no idea this place was here and its only 3 blocks away.
Great random walk by find.
Thank god they deliver. Red Jade is a godsend if you're too hungover - or stoned - to leave the house for food.
Dishes are hit or miss. Find something you like and stick with it. Spicy salted sparerib and hot and sour soup are some of my favorites.
Dishes taste better and you get larger portions if you visit the restaurant vs. delviery but they don't disappoint.
I was Very Pleased with my RED JADE experience
I love San Francisco for many reasons and RED JADE has just added another check mark for reasons to visit the City By the Bay. The service was friendly and speedy and the food was absolutely amazing. I highly Recommend the Green Onion Pancakes they were to die for and their Won Ton Soup was the best I've had since the early days of my childhood. Red Jade has made me forgo eating any more Chinese cuisine in my current city, Stockton, for my family and I have vowed we would not eat another bit of Chinese without it coming from RED JADE
I have ordered from Red Jade at least 5 times now. I have never eaten in the restaurant. Only had it delivered. The food is always on time, hot, and seasoned very well. This is really good Chinese food! everything is great! I always place my orders using http://eat24hours.com. They work very well together.
Ordered delivery last night online from Red Jade and in the blink of an eye (well about 20 minutes) they were ringing my doorbell with a big bag of hot food.
The food was pretty good, not mega-outstanding but the best delivery Chinese food I've found in my new 'hood so far.
The free pork buns and sesame balls were a nice touch, I'll probably order from them again at some point.
Check Please! Review...
If you have never seen Check Please! it is kinda like Yelp on TV http://blogs.kqed.org/... Gotta love it!
So my Man and I where watching my favorite PBS show Check Please! and along came Red Jade and the sudden craving for Chinese. After the show was over we knew we had to try it especially the "Best Green Onion Pancake in Bay Area." We made the track out to San Francisco and after battling to find parking got there. Cute place.
Because they were on the show there was a bit of a wait. We tried calling ahead for a reservation but all of the times where booked and only walk in was available. My Man and I joked about how many people where there as regulars v. viewers. As it turns out we ended up chatting with another lady who was waiting and had also come out because of the show. Ah, the power of marketing.
The place is small so it took about 25 minutes to get seated. We were so hungry and had stared at the menu for so long that we immediately placed our order. We ordered:
- Pot stickers: They were not the worst I have had but by far not the best. Not to mention they don't have that yummy pot sticker sauce. :(
- Dim Sum: Which my Man really enjoyed.
- The Veggie Chow Mein: Was pretty yummy, but not delish.
- Broccoli Chicken: This was bland and did not taste all that great.
- Asparagus & Cashew Chicken: This tasted exactly like the broccoli chicken.
Because they were super busy it took forever to get our food. Not to mention they were out of the "Best Green Onion Pancake in Bay Area." Overall, the place is nice and they have good food but the service is not good. The server was overwhelmed rushed us and was hard to understand. In conclusion the place gets a solid 3 stars.
Just like others, I saw the episode of "Check Please" and was like "whaaaa? a restaurant 2 blocks from me got such good ratings? I must go!" . Apparently other people also saw that episode (freaky, isn't it?) and decided to show up.
There's a line outside. But any decent restaurant in SF has a line outside on a weekend. We put our name down, and ask the host "how long is the wait?". She say, "20-30 minutes". OK, we decide to checkout the bookstore next door (aside: it's a great bookstore, sells gently-used books, a definite must-visit).
10 minutes later, we come back and find our names crossed out. What? The lady says "I called you but you not here!" . But... but... you said 20-30 minutes! OK, back to waiting again.
We are seated, and promptly ask for the scallion pancakes.
Now, let me tell you. Scallion pancakes, aka "tsun yu bin" (probably butchered that name), is my absolute mostest favoritest Chinese dish. Because Cheap Eats raved about it, I had decided to come here.
Imagine my surprise when they said, "we're out". What the.... ? How can you be *out* of scallion pancakes?? Do you get them from some store???
Anyways: the lack of scallion pancakes was an ominous sign. We ordered a few more things ("sizzling rice soup", etc.) and they were totally mediocre.
The reviewers on "cheap eats" must've been *really lucky* the day they visited, for I found nothing to rave about in this meal. It was no different than any of the 1000s of cheap Chinese places scattered all over the Bay Area.
3-stars for the food (mediocre), -1 star for running out of their "star" dish.
This place is eerily similar to Eliza's on California. A Chinese restaurant with good flavor and authentic servers in a distinctly non-Chinese location...one in Pac Heights, the other in the Castro.
Like a ton of folks here, I came here when my mom saw "Check Please Bay Area" and said we needed to try it. I had my doubts, and they were quickly erased. After a brief 10 minute wait, we started on scallion pancakes (chong you bing) which was crispy hot and flavorful. The appetizer plate was a fantastic deal with two each of pot stickers, crab rangoon, egg rolls, and fried chicken. The crab rangoon was rich and soooo sinful. The chicken wing was crispy with good batter but the chicken meat itself had no flavor. The hot mustard that came with this plate was a tad spicy but AWESOME. It also came with a decent sweet and sour sauce and a rather disappointing peanut sauce.
We settled on a plate of beef chow fun (my staple Chinese comfort food) and an order of black bean asparagus. Both were solid.
Make no mistake. This is not a relaxing Chinatown or Clement Street dining place. You're surrounded by a lot of retarded white folks asking for General Tso's chicken and giggling at words that don't fall into their vocabulary. If you are amused by this kind of ridiculous American-ness, enjoy. If not, then stick to those two places.
In the mean time I'll be back here if only for that hot mustard.
The Boyfriend introduced me to Red Jade after his protestations of Chow's Kitchen (which I found three-stars-acceptable). I was pleased to discover that the food is a step above Chow's but still three stars because it's not San Tung. The fried crab rangoon was about as good as anywhere else, as were the vegetarian egg rolls. The wok-fried beef fillet with snow peas was ok - the meat was decent, not too stringy. The kung pao chicken is average as is the General Tso's spicy boneless chicken. The steamed tofu with combination seafood was like Ma Po tofu or like Korean soon-doobu. The beef fried rice is actually pretty good - it might be my favorite dish here. I liked the beef chow fun ok too, but I thought there was too much beef (I know, strange complaint). The ratio was a little off. I do like how they give you free sesame balls/BBQ pork buns with your delivery order. There's a minimum $15 delivery charge and they're pretty fast - I'd say about 30-45 minutes, depending on where you live. You can order online, which I love, too.
I tried their ma pao tofu with pork recently. It doesn't taste like ma pao tofu I've had before but I still really liked it. So much so that after eating all the tofu, I added a new box of soft tofu to the sauce to make it last longer.
The service is also nice. We went to dine in but changed our minds half way through. They promptly boxed up our food without acting like we're an imposition (although I did feel bad, so I tipped better).

I've done both dine-in and delivery. The free… Read more »
Just had to check out Red Jade after rave reviews on BA Check Please. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what the raves were about. I ordered the Happy Family - a dish recommended on the show and found it flavorless and strange (nothing like the Great China Walnut Prawns that it resembles). I also had the green onion pancake, which was OK - but I didn't love the peanut sauce that came with it. I much prefer a soy based dipping sauce that I've had with other green onion/scallion pancakes in the past.
On the plus side, the potstickers were excellent and the sweet and sour chicken that my friends ordered was competent as well. Red Jade is in an adorable location and the decor is cute too. It was packed, so maybe I didn't make the right menu choices.
I thought the service was inconsistent, at first it seemed like the food was coming quickly but then after they served my friends we waited an additional 5 minutes or so for my entree. They also seemed attentive at times and at other times we couldn't manage to get our waters refilled.
I was disappointed, I don't think I'll return to Red Jade - especially since relatively speaking I have the glory that is Great China in my backyard.
Mediocre Chinese food, but if you're in the mood for Chinese comfort food, this place is great. Your food is ready alarmingly quick, and they have a surprisingly wide menu.
I got General Tso's which had a ton of flavor. It's also a plus that brown rice is only a tad more expensive than white rice. (yay complex carbs). They don't rush you out either, another plus. Food could have been hotter out of the kitchen.
Also, including a sesame ball with the fortune cookie was a nice touch.
My fortune: "You will have a successful entertainment career." For everyone else's sake, let's hope not.
This place is soo good! I'm pretty picky about Chinese food and I was convinced there was no good Chinese food in the city, so I was so happy when my roommate introduced me to Red Jade.
Their lunch specials are inexpensive and very filling. I'm a vegetarian, except that I eat seafood (so I'm technically a pescatarian), and they have plenty of delicious options for me. The asparagus salmon with black bean sauce, for example, is excellent. I also try to find good crab rangoon anytime I go to a Chinese food restaurant -- and Red Jade makes superb crab rangoon.
The staff is friendly, sometimes they seem super busy but they always serve you well. Free pork buns with a big delivery (I don't eat them, but my roommate is happy to oblige), and the sesame balls that come with every meal are yummmmy. Yay Red Jade!
Saw it on Check Please too. Those people are crazy. It's very standard crummy SF Chinese food, just like (practically) everywhere else.
Maybe if I knew enough Chinese to order off the menu like the lady on TV it might have been OK. As it is, no me gusta.
