Many things about Red Iguana deserve 5 stars.

1. I have had worse mole made for me by Mexican mothers and grandmothers.
2. Many of their specials are unique Oaxacan specialties you cannot readily experience in the U.S.

However, the wait is INSANE. I wish they would raise their prices and cut some of the cheaper and less authentic items off the menu. Maybe this way it would only be a 30 minute wait instead of 1 hr or more!

Anyway, everyone in Salt Lake who has not tried the mole is FOOL!

This review is in respect to their catering service.

I kept hearing things about their food, and during my visit to SLC, I had planned to head over, to try the food.   Surprisingly, during my business meeting, someone had decided to get us lunch, and it was Red Iguana.

Let's talk about their service first.  It's professional.   They setup stations with their food, in clean serving trays, and it's served.  They make the meal for you, showing you what is available, then helping you along the way, plating up your favorite offerings.  They lay everything out, and even the condiments, cheese, sour cream and guacamole was fresh tasting.  The main course, of course, they offered the mole, but moreover, the flavors of the foods, the chicken was cooked perfectly, with the right seasonings.  The sauces had just a little bit of bite, spice and a hit of heat.

If I was planning an event down in Salt Lake City, I would definitely go for the Red Iguana.

I've had mole once before in my life and was completely underwhelmed. It tasted liked goopy nothingness. As we were trying to figure out a place to eat in SLC, I stumbled upon this review and decided to give it a whirl even with my previously horrible experience with moles.

Wow. Boy am I glad that I did. This place is off the hook.  I'm from the east coast, so I guess keep that in mind when reading this review (I havent been to the SW or spent considerable time in CA), but the mole here was ridiculously delicious.  The wait on a Thursday night was about 30min, not too bad, and the service we got once seated was fantastic. We told them it was our first time here and they brought us out a little mole sampler platter to try each of the 7 varieties.  That didnt really help much, as each one was glorious in its own right.

We started with the chips and salsa, which totally kicked ass. Well, the salsa kicked ass, and the chips were good (I think the chips at Uncle Julios is better).  My friend got the cucumber marg and I got the jamaican one... his was better.  I went with the Poblanito (i think) mole smothered over pork chops and he got another one... I forget exactly what he got but it doesnt matter, if you stick with one of the mole dishes you won't be disappointed.

So happy I went, and a little pissed too... I know DC doesnt have anything close to this good.

I like Red Iguana and I have eaten here countless times over the last 12 years or so that I have lived in Salt Lake City.  Yet I never reviewed it and I am not sure why...

Red Iguana is an icon in SLC.  They serve wonderful food in a VERY casual atmsophere.  The line outside the door truely signals the popularity, but don't let it scare you away.  People move through pretty quickly.

The mole here is outstanding and I have loved everything I have ever had here, but I will say that I do avoid the salsa more and more.  Mostly because as I get older I don't like the garlic as much. The salsa is FULL of garlic.

MOLE! MOLE! MOLE! If you don't believe me, ask for a sample plate of each mole and try them for yourself.

My favorites:
MOLE AMARILLO: 5 stars. Called a "fiery favorite" with good reason - it will burn!

MOLE POBLANO: 5 stars. The description is wierd - peanuts, chocolate, etc - but it tastes fantastic! (also try the enchiladas poblanas for smaller portion of the same great mole)

Seriously, this place rocks!!!

I had such high hopes for this place.  We went for lunch one day and waited and waited to get in and get a table.  This place is very popular, so I was sure it would be incredible.  We ordered and the food came, the service was a bit slow, again read busy, but when we got the food it was fresh and warm.  I took a bite and to my surprise, slight disappointment, it was only ok, don't get me wrong it was fine good even.  But when you live in California and have Mexican food on every corner, well, this place was a bit of a let down.  It is quite possibly the best Mexican place in Salt Lake City, but when I compare it to home...well I can get the same quality and taste here and not have to wait a half hour to get seated.

If you want Mexican and are in Salt Lake City, then go, because chances are it's one of the best you will find.  But for me it was a let down.

They have Taquitos on special one day a week and I'm not even sure of the day - weds. Or Thursday. I think.  They also have an everyday special and I'm
not sure of the name, but it starts with puntas de filetes and it is sooo good.  I've ordered quite a few menu items in our time frequenting this establishment and have had only great food ever served to me.

If there is more 'authentic' Mexican cuisine to be had in SLC I
haven't found it. In the 14 years I've been living here I've not found a better to place to have Mexican food.  I don't really try many Mexican restaurants because most of them fail, and in Utah there isn't much of a bar to surpass in that area.

Red Iguana has great food and drink to satisfy the
'fajita' eater and those who want great authentic flavors.  If you want it to taste great, come here.  If you don't care about taste?  Go anywhere else. :)

Since we moved to the area, everyone has said: Eat at the Red Iguana; Eat at the Red Iguana; Eat at the Red Iguana... So, we did. And, well, this is what happened:

I'm guessing that we just had a bad experience.  But, it was pretty bad... First, we waited in line for 45 minutes to get a table.  Then, we finally sat down.  The order took about 25 minutes to receive.  When we received the food, there was a hair in my beans, and a dead ladybug in my guacamole.  Now, don't get me wrong, I know that this was my first time eating there...

Food? Overall, I was not convinced that Red Iguana was any better than the hundreds of mom and pop places around the valley.  In fact, the food was just okay.  But, apparently, there seems to be a cult following for the Red Iguana... I think that's because the place seems more acceptable, accessible, and safe for Gringos, so they go there... But, I'm fairly sure that the food is not "to die for...."

I'm not sure what everyone has been talking about... I don't think that the food here is any better than anywhere else... But, it's definitely not horrible.

I saw this place on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, and had to try it.  Looked like everyone else in SLC had the same idea, too.  The place was packed with people waiting outside at 5:30pm on a Sunday.

I started off with 2 specials - Jamaica Margarita (hibiscus), and Ceviche made with Grouper.  Both were really great.  Though, the margarita was a bit weak.  But, all drinks I had in Utah were.  The Ceviche was really fresh.

For my entree I had the Negro Mole with Turkey.  I've never really had mole, but I definitely loved this dish.  All of their other moles sound great, and I would like to try them all.

My next drink was the Pepino (cucumber) margarita.  I've never had one of these before, and it was one of the best margaritas I've ever had.  The cucumber was refreshing and wasn't overpowered by it.

For dessert I had the fried ice cream.  It was awesome.  What comes out looks like a fried buritto with chocolate drizzed on top.  Once you break into it, it's filled with vanilla ice cream, a layer of cinnamon & sugar, and a layer of coconut.  All of the flavors worked really well together.

Although this place was small & crowded, they are very efficient there.  Our waitress was awesome.  I can't remember her name, but she was a pro!

If you are going to eat here, I recommend wearing some stretch pants.

This place has way good food.  It's extremely authentic, and the assortment on the menu is quite inclusive.  At our table, we had fajitas and two of the 7 different mole's.  I can say, both the fajitas and the mole's were the best i've ever had.

I will absolutely be coming back to this place if I'm in Salt Lake any time soon!

On top of that, the Jalepeno Margarita was in the top 5 margarita's i've ever tasted, As well as being creative enough to pull it off!  The Red Iguana has great ambiance as well, the front door is littered with stickers, not that it's particularly aesthetically pleasing, but it's just fun and lends itself to let you know what this place is all about!

Apparently, it's a long since family owned establishment, but at some point the family disagreed and some members defected into what's known today as The Blue Iguana less than three blocks away.  I can't speak for the food here, but i understand it's very similar.  However the Red Iguana is the original, and there's something to be said for that, long story short, GO HERE!

A good buddy of mine had been raving about this place to me (over the phone) for like 2,000 miles of my road trip, and he absolutely insisted I cruise through and "stuff myself silly" when I made my way through Salt Lake City.  Featured on "Guy's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" (Food Network), I was confident it was going to be a solid experience so I worked up a huge appetite on my way in.

The wait for Red Iguana was ridiculous for (I think it was) a Monday, so I put my name on the list and then went back to my motel room (conveniently right next door) to shower up.  45 minutes later I was asking the host of the restaurant for recommendations, and received two:

*Puntas de fillete a la nortena (kind of a fajitas-style top sirloin with excellent mole)
*Cochinita pibil (didn't try it)

Since my table neighbors (who'd been patronizing the Iguana for more than a decade) highly recommended the Puntas, I decided to try them out, along with a top-shelf margarita.  I was not disappointed with the Puntas, though the margarita was a little weak, so I had to order a couple more..haha

Anyway, I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 for a couple of reasons:

1. The wait was ridiculous, but I guess it was to be expected.  The people I sat next to who had been coming here for over like a decade weren't deterred, but it kind of does suck, especially when there's no comfortably designated waiting area with a bar..(i was on vacation, give me a break! haha)

2. The Puntas were amazing, and this is probably the best mole I've ever had.  Buuuuut..what is shocking is the meat choice - top sirloin - which is a notoriously tough meat.  I would definitely try these again, but next time around I'm going to give the Cochinita a try instead (pork tenderloin).  And I wish the Puntas were made using a more tender meat.

Anyway, this is a solid place and I'd go back here in a heartbeat.  Expect a line, bring a flask, and come hungry but not starving because by the time you're seated your stomach might already be eating itself :-)

Hands down, best Mexican restaurant I've visited... and I've sought out the best wherever I travel.  I've eaten there three or four times, but the most memorable visit was when I took a friend who was a native of Monterrey, Mexico.  He was skeptical.

When they brought the food, artfully arranged and decorated with unique condiments, he looked at the server and gushed, "You do things I have never seen anyone other than my grandma do!"  So it's authentic!

The moles are to die for.  111 other reviewers largely agree.  Want to beat the wait?  Get there before 5:00 p.m.  Usually a walk in and sit down, followed by a lot of snickering at the ever growing line!

A must-do stop on any SLC visit!!

NOTE: I am typically NOT and have NEVER been a fan of mexican food. CHEESE+Beans = BLAH to me!

However, this place is amazing. The FIRST time where it was authentic mexican food where things aren't just filled with beans and cheese and I don't get sick after eating it!

My mom has never had mexican food before and she really enjoyed it.

We got the mole sampler to try b/c we heard their moles were awesome!

I was super lucky that day before they had the mango mole pork enchiladas (only served on fridays) so i got that to share with the rest of the table. We also got steak fajitas (this was surprisingly delicious) and a chicken dish (sorry for the lack of specifics, I can't remember the names b/c someone else had ordered for us!) but everything was yummy.OH YES & Fresh guacamole!loaded that onto my fajitas:)

The margaritas and mojitos were strong and delicious. I got the mango margarita---made with fresh fruit! OUr server was SUPER sweet and put up with one of the bossy ladies who was eating with us (sigh so embarassing) but we left feeling satisfied!!!

So happy I discovered a mexican place I really enjoy!! too bad it's in a different state :(

We had heard about this place from several sources, so of course we had to try it. Be aware - the wait is long!!

I'll get the disappointing news out of the way first - the guacamole was totally bland. I was surprised. Not spicy, and not terribly flavorful.

However, the mole coloradito was great, as was the horchata, and it was all plenty of food. I think for SLC prices this place is expensive, but SF Bay price-wise it was normal. Service was also good.

Definitely a place to check out if you're in the area.

Well, the people I was with enjoyed it greatly so I'm going with 3 stars.  The wait moved really quickly.  That might be the problem, though.  I think they are more about getting the customer in and out then they are about the food.  As a result, my mole special was completely cold when it was served to me.  The moles were all thickened and unappetizing and the bird was literally cold to the touch.  The waiter took it off the bill right away.... but still, really?  You are a restaurant, shouldn't you be cooking my food?  Or at least warming it up?

Anyways, my buddy loved his yellow mole enchiladas and the pork I shared with my wife was fine.

This is a tough one to review for me.  The most famous Mexican place in Utah advertises itself as being able to stand up to some of the more well known states known for great Mexican food. I think they do a decent job for Utah, but there is much better out there.

Let me just start by saying that they do make some really great mole.  This is obviously their shining star and the reason everyone loves this place.  It probably gets so much attention because it is really a surprise to most people that you can mix things like nuts, chocolate, bananas, chilies, and the kitchen sink into Mexican cooking and still make one awesome sauce.  The mole is remarkable for sure. Ask for a mole sample plate to get the one that fits you best.  My favorites of the 5 are the mole verde and the mole negro.  But I'm sure you will find one that suits you best.  Besides the mole, the Tacos don Ramon are also pretty good as a second option.

But everything else I have had here really is a let down.  Tamales, tacos, enchiladas, rellenos-  All sub-par Mexican food.  If you aren't going for the mole, it's probably not worth the wait.  What kills it is the standard measures of any Mexican joint- Chips and salsa, rice and beans. These are really not great at the Red Iguana.  Chips taste store bought, not freshly fried and house-made.  Rice is grainy and flavorless, and the beans overly thick and boring.  This alone kills the place in my opinion.

This was the best meal we had during our visit to SLC. It was well worth the wait.
A multitude of people have already said it, but the mole is amazing and the servings were generous.
In addition, the service was good. The hostess was very patient and friendly even though people (like me) were bugging her about how much longer to wait.  The server was also very friendly and helpful in making suggestions.
We liked it so well that we went back to pick up some mole to take home.

With so many reviews, I'm not gonna bore with details.

Wait: 20mins to get in the door.
Margaritas: Strong for SLC and delicious.
Food: Very good, very authentic, fattening, with huge portions.
Price: Great value for what you get.
Service: Michael knew his stuff, was on top of it for the most part despite being very busy.
Downside: Enchilada sauce was good, but a bit too authentic for my taste.
Go back?: For sure.

Have you ever noticed that Mexicans dont' eat at Red Iguana?  That's because besides the mole, it's NOT AUTHENTIC Mexican food.

Ugh!  Seriously folks.  Red Iguana is sub-par at best. I'll be the first to admit that their mole is really really good.  However, the rest of their menu is HORRIBLE!!!  There are so many authentic mexican restaurants in SLC that have great food and are regularly visited by actual Mexicans!!!  Give Mi Ranchito or Hector's Miramar a chance.  The food is better and you don't have to wait in line for 1/2 an hour to get a table.

I've been eating at Red Iguana since I moved to Utah in 1993 and the food has gone downhill ever since.  I've traveled to many different cities in Mexico and my wife is part Mexican, so I know Mexican food.  Red Iguana misses the mark.  If it weren't for their aura, they would have been out of business years ago.

There was a small wait when we arrived.  Other than this, I have nothing negative to say here.  The margaritas and sangrias were strong and good, and my husband and I each tried a different mole.  I tried the Amarillo (which was a spicy yellow mole), and my husband tried the mole negro (a traditional kind of mole).  There were about 4 or 5 others.  This is the most amazing mole and Mexican I have ever had. This is saying something, considering we had just spent 2 weeks traveling through New Mexico and Arizona.

Whenever I am in Salt Lake City, I will make a trip here.

Holy MOLE!  Red Iguana is out of place.  What I mean is, this is dang good Mexican food in Utah.  I ate here as all the other dog show folks were eating here.  I kind of made a disgusted face when I heard it was Mexican food.  Really?  Did I drive all the way to Utah to eat what I can get 24/7 in Austin?  Bleh.  I went anyways, and this joint was packed to the gills.  Crowds of people were waiting outside on a Monday night.

I managed to find our group pretty quickly, and the munching was on.  I ordered the Cochinita Pibil ($12.75), which is pork loin rubbed with achiote, vinegar, lime juice, orange juice, paprika and salt, slow roasted,
then shredded and simmered in the roasting juice.  The other dish ordered at my table that caught my eye was the Lomo de Puerco en mole de almendras ($15.50) which is almonds, chile guajillo, chile guero, yellow zucchini, milk, peanut butter and onions, served with a
roasted pork loin stuffed with dried fruit, sun-dried tomatoes, swiss chard and pine nuts.

My food was good, really good.  Juicy and citrus-y with a just the right amount of flavor,  I had some really dang good pork that was worth the 25 mile drive each way.  The waitstaff served a dish with the different types of moles they had with chips, and I gotta say that each one is delicious in it's own way.  My one regret is that I didn't get that lomo (pork lion stuffed with dried fruit and served with mole).  It looked fantastic.  Good Mexican food in Utah?  Yes, miracles do happen.

The waits at this restaurant are fucking unbelievable.  Apparently a third of the city comes here for dinner on any given night, to the tune of 60+ minutes on Saturday and 30+ minutes at less than an hour before close on Sunday.  They were named to the Salt Lake Magazine 2008 Hall of Fame (an inaugural member with Mazza), and are widely considered to be the best Mexican in town.  So I had to try it, right?

Is it worth the wait?  Not really.  It's good, but not great.  I had guacamole (B) and one of their signature dishes--puntas de filetes a la nortena.  It's sirloin tips sauteed with bacon, green onions, jalapeno strips, and tomatoes served over a bed of almond mole.  If I wanted to compare this place to other Mexican restaurants in other cities, I should have ordered my mainstay, chicken enchiladas suizas.  But I figured that I may as well get something special, and I wasn't disappointed by the selection, which also came with tortillas and refried beans.  I'll give it a B+.  There was a LOT of mole; I probably ate less than half of it, but finished the rest of the dish.  And by the way, the overall portion was huge.  Two moderately hungry people could split the amount of food that I devoured.

I am half Mexican and grew up in Southern California. I visit Salt Lake City once a month and always make it a point to visit Red Iguana. It is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the whole world. I'm a big fan of Mole so my favorites are Mole Poblano and the Mole Pipian (pumkin seed sauce). Seriously the best two Mexican dishes I have ever had. But don't worry, if you're into what we Americans know as "standard" Mexican food, they have all the stuff that you're used to (tacos, enchiladas etc) and it all rocks. So stop messing around on the internet and go there right now!!!!!!

P.s. If you're going for lunch on a weekday you might want to arrive before 11:30 or after 1:00pm or else you'll have to wait like 20 minutes to be seated.

I am a Southern Californian.  We have more Mexican establishments than we know what to do with.  You can understand my skepticism upon hearing a good friend rant and rave about Mexican food in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Unexpectedly, Red Iguana brought its A-game to my stomach.  They offer a panoply of moles (read "mo-lay," not the animal - I don't know how to type accent marks on the computer) fit for the finest of Oaxacan eateries, from the Verde to the Amarillo to the Coloradito to the Negro and the Poblano . . .  all of which are muy delicioso on my lengua.  My personal favorite was the Mole Amarillo, which the waiter recommended for me as an "Asian person" and what he pondered my tastebuds would enjoy.  Or maybe it was because "amarillo" means yellow.  In any event, my esophagus received it well.

Our waiter, Aaron, deserves his own paragraph in this review.  Aaron is hands down the best waiter I've ever had the pleasure of being served by.  He is, also, the only Asian waiter in this Mexican restaurant, so he's not hard to spot.  When my friends and I were indecisive on our moles of choice, he brought out a plate with all of the different moles for us to sample.  The chips and salsa keep coming without our ever having to ask for refills.  The tap water was frequently replenished.  He brought us out some "special salsa" that was not served to the general population.  He gave us an extra bag of chips with our leftovers.  Ladies and gentlemen, you better recognize and see that you're dealing with a G.

I will be returning to the Red Iguana before I leave Salt Lake City, and I can only hope that upon my return, Aaron will be waiting for me with open arms.  I like him in his big jeans, he gives me nice dreams, he make me wanna scream "Ooh ooh ooh."  Just kidding.  But he's a good waiter.

Highly recommended for both the food and the service.  Happy eating!

Nice Mexican restaurant in SLC.

It's always packed and most of the time people need to wait for a while to be seated. However, my friends and I still like to go there because their food are awesome!

(Once you be seated, the food actually comes out pretty quick)

"I got a place, you'll love it."

Yeah right, does this dude know I am from California?  We KNOW our Mexican food.  I'm a damned almanac of lard based beans and tortillas.

"It's just down the street there."

Wait a sec, the neighborhood is getting a bit shady.  Liquor store, check advance store, bail bonds, liquor store, liquor store, house with bars.  This might end up being a good place after all.

"Here it is, let's go in."

Parking lot is full.  Wow, so THIS is where all the ethnic people are in Salt Lake City.  I was getting nervous.  My rule of thumb is 'if it's all white, shit aint right.'

"Try the mole, it's supposedly good here."

I am starving, if this bastard steers me wrong I'll be pissed.

"So, how is it?"

Just be cool, admit to him that you were wrong and he was right and this place is one of the better places you've eaten at.

'It's ok.'

You're so damned stubborn.

Once I got done talking to myself in my own head, which I do quite often when I am in "judgment" mode, I really started to enjoy the mole.

This place is legit.  I could tell the tortillas were freshly made by hand given their un-uniform size.

They have 9 or 10 different varieties of mole but I went with the original.

This place isn't far from the airport so if time permits, make a trip.

Oaxaca.

THERE IS NO BETTER MEXICAN - ANYWHERE PERIOD!

Ok now that  you know this, you can't miss a chance to eat at this all-star restaurant in Salt Lake City.  I am a native of the city, but now live in California.  Every time someone I know goes there I recommend Red Iguana and it has yet to disappoint.  The neighborhood it is in and the restaurant structure aren't much to write home about.  But when you see lines forming outside of the building in the dead of winter, you know that this is the place to be.

Let me tell you the food is - TO DIE FOR!  They have a huge menu with something for everyone.  If you like the safety of a chicken taco or cheese enchilada it's here.  If you are more daring you can try one of their moles (special Mexican sauces made with everything from pistachios and pepitas to chocolate and pumpkin).  The depth of flavor in the moles is WOW.

My favorite dish on the menu - chilaquiles.  Fried corn tortilla strips smoothered in a red sauce with chorizo and egg.  There is enough food for two on this one dish.  Jen, my wife, always goes for one of the combo plates.  Why?  Well she isn't from Utah and hasn't had the chance to eat there as much as I, and doesn't want to miss any of their great flavors.  Also, you have to get their quacamole!  It is chunky and oh so tasty

Next time you are in Salt Lake, just do it and go to the Red Iguana.

Can't speak to the rest of the menu...but the mole is absolutely the best i've had anywhere in the country.

Why the HELL is this restaurant in Utah, rather than in California where it belongs?  That should cost it a star.

Where else ya gonna eat Mexican in SLC ?

I pretty much stuffed myself silly with tortilla chips and salsa, so I was too full to eat once the food came, but that did not stop me from devouring my dinner.

The menu offers a ton of choices, but they seem to be best known for their mole sauces.  They offer a freebie mole tasterso you may taste before making a mole selection.  We ended up nick-naming many of the sauces to help us distinguish them -- there was the peanut butter mole, the candy mole, the spicy tomato mole, the raisin mole.... not really sure what they really were, but most were tasty, with a nice blend of complex flavors.

Order beer here!  It's Utah, and that means there is an eye dropper drop of tequila in their margaritas.

Too much hype, not enough deliciousness.

Red Iguana, I've tried to embrace you, really. Everyone keeps telling me how fantastic you are, so I've gone through your doors on numerous occasions and sampled a variety of dishes. First I tried the mole, even though I've never been a fan. Maybe if I liked mole I'd understand the appeal of this place.

After having ruled out the mole, I've continued to go. Tacos, fajitas, etc. etc. I liked the shrimp fajitas, but those are pretty straight forward. I think I like the ones at La Frontera more, though. Everything else, though, it's not that it's bad. I guess it's pretty good. It's just that I eat the food, think about the delicious Mexican food I was able to get back in Texas, and then realize how this pales in comparison. It spoiled me, Red Iguana, and I'm sorry about that.

It's just that if I'm going to wait 45 minutes for Mexican food, it had better be Tex-Mex.

Red Iguana has great food. Some of the best Mexican I have had anywhere. It's very small and not much to look at from the outside. Get there early as lines form and there will be quite a wait. The special on the day I was there was a pork enchilada with a spicy mango mole, if it's offered the day you go, get it. The free salsa is great, as are the chips. Service is prompt and friendly. Try the Red Iguana.

ill start by saying i tried mole a long time ago and remember it having little flavor.....so i didnt want to go with a mile dish even though that is their specialty.

had iguanas combo - chicken enchilada, chille relleno, and crispy beef taco. all was very good. personally id rather eat greasy tacos from a small taqueria but for a sit down place this was good.

i tried someone elses mole sauce and our waitress was nice enough to offer us a taste of all the moles they offer. i felt like i was crazy because i think mole has very little flavor, it just doesnt taste like anything. everyone else really liked them.

Red Iguana has the best mole in town. Be forewarned however, a reservation is highly recommended. They're very popular and their restaurant is small. But trust me, it's worth it.
