Love this place, the bartendars, the lack of shitty beer! The hot dogs are good and some interesting. Once again..good Tuesday cheapies. Sometimes though on Tuesday it is standing only.
Go here and Run the Gauntlet...I just couldn't imagine 9 hot dogs in 1.5 hours.
The only downfall is that this place is a bit spendy on non cheap nights. But, you get what you pay for!
So excited to have found a hot dog place in Tacoma on sunday, during our visit. I actually bought two for my snack back at the Murano Hotel, after eating dinner.
Great dogs, great selection of beers, nice part of the town.
I just was not sure if they wanted my business. I was passed up 4 times before they served me. Not too busy, to have been passed up accidentally 4 times.
Nice place, check it out.
I like Red Hot because of what they are - no more, no less. They don't pretend. Yummy Hot dogs! Good beer! Decent price! Super casual and friendly atmosphere! What else do you expect?
Two friends took me here recently, and we were hoping for beer floats. Apparently these are reserved for special occasions (weekends?) because we couldn't get them, despite begging. So we got hot dogs. I appreciated that they have vegetarian options, and the hot dogs were good, though not spectacular. What I didn't appreciate was the ribbing from the waiter and the smart a** "too cool" attitude. It was a little ugly, people were offended, we won't be going back...
I ate two hot dogs after a craving for a classic coney dog. This place hit the spot. To my surprise, there was an excellent beer selection and a cozy non-grungy dive bar atmosphere. Cool neighborhood, cool people and good service.
The "Red Hot" hot dog (pictured next to the beer) is awesome in its simplicity. I will definitely be back to try all of their other hot dogs when I have more time. Cute little bar too.
Found this place on Yelp - have driven past a million times and never noticed it. Ordered a Chicago dog to go - the guy was really nice. The hot dog was good (not great) - loved the neon relish! Not into beer, so probably won't come back to hang out but it is a cute place. Next time I'm cravin a dog - will come back and try the Hilltop Strangler.
Beer. Good beer.
Hot dogs. Good hot dogs.
Cheap. Open late.
I really shouldn't have to say anything more... except -- they've got really good vegetarian options too.
Right. So as a vegetarian, how could I not love a place that features a whole section of their menu dedicated to "not dogs"? The Red Hot has a lovely beer selection and nostalgically named menu items. The only struggle is finding a seat, and I can't really fault the place with becoming popular.
First time I went, wasn't expecting anything great, but I must say I was quite impressed. As someone who has never been to Chicago or New York, I would not call my self a hot dog afficianado but I would have to say these hot dogs are DAMN good!! To me, I will never go home and throw a oscar meyer weiner in the microwave because the smell of microwaved hot dogs isn't exactly appealing to me, but believe you me I love a good hot dog w/ all the fixins made by someone else! This place is to the point kinda place isn't trying to be the "masa" of hot dog resturants- not fancy one bit but OH SO GOOD!!
this is by far my favorite place on 6th ave. great people, great atmosphere, great beer, and great hot dogs.
every time i have friends come visit we go there almost everyday.
Best hot dogs, good selection of microbrews, laid back vibe and really nice owners willing to talk about good beer. My husband and I love hitting this place up on a late Friday afternoon to kick off our weekend. Between this place and Parkway Tavern you're set for great hangout spots. Order the Strangler and Chicago dog.
Red Hot is laid back bar with a down to earth staff, rotating microbrew selection and has an slightly dysfunctional obsession with hot dogs. While most bars on the 6th ave strip are trying to hard to be slick and trendy, this "come as you are" haven is a shining light of honest, unpretentious fun.
Compared to its neighboors, Red Hot seems like a dump from the outside, but inside is a classic bar setting that screams "sit down, have a beer and have a good time". The bartenders know their beer and the clients are friendly, honest and laid back. You won't find a single popped collar or Lindsay Lohan drones which is a big ups for me.
Now lets talk hotdogs... I come from NYC where tasty hot dogs abounds in various forms and I say HANDS DOWN these are the best in Tacoma. Any place that has beer and a Hot Dog eating challenge should get a five star in a Zagats guide. The menu has a variety of doggie options to fill your gut and put a smile on your face. You can later burn off the calories by working up a sweat at the adjacent pinball machine.
So overall what else can I say? Good people, warm atmosphere, great beer selections/prices and fantastic hot dogs!
Yeah okay, the dogs are good and the vast variety of ways they've thought of to prepare what is ultimately mystery meat is mind boggling, but that's not why I go. I go for the AWESOME beer selection - only the Parkway rivals the Red Hot in craft beer selection (taphouse sucks, don't even go there...). I go there for the awesome happy hours - random $2 tap on Tuesdays! I go for the pinball. I go for the movie nights - big projection screen above the bar. I go to look at the bartender's cool newsie hat. I go to read the Weekly Volcano and play Boggle. I go to eat moon pies and drink RC Cola - what else do you need really?
if you like red hots's please go and get Tommy Chicago hotdogs on 149th and pacific ave there very good. let me know if anyone goes by. thanks
My wife and I stopped by a few weeks ago during one of the crappy snow days we had. I had heard good things, and we made a go at it. I had the Hilltop Strangler (all beef dog, nacho cheese, tomatoes, bacon, thousand island, onions) which was great. I wasn't sure if the combo of nacho cheese and thousand island would work, but it did. I was tempted to order the Tideflats dog (double dog with everything in the kitchen on it), but maybe next time. They have a impressive selection of beer that you won't find anywhere else. The 'Hiptster' (me=not a hipster) count was pretty high, but I can look past that. Cheap, good beer, friendly staff.....can't go wrong.
This place is classic, down-home casual Tacoma and shows why I love my hometown. Unfortunately I have to drive from Tukwila, but it's truly worth it. Retro Tacoma pics on the walls, games, Vitamin R special on Wed, movie nights, eclectic decor and hey, those hot dogs are crazygood. Wish I didn't have to drive so far to hang out here.
Had 2 Coney dogs, couldn't stop at one. It's homemade no-bean chili, onions and mustard with a very fresh, locally-made dog. Damn, that was worth the drive. Gotta get a hoodie next time. Great service, lots of good beer on tap and in bottles, my favorite local Tim's chips, heard the Frito Pie is excellent. Fun place and very affordable. There are veggie options. Go now and enjoy. Good for you, Tacoma, for showing up Seattle yet again. Will definitely be back.
A constantly rotating selection of great (and many local) beers. Their food is awesome too, I suggest trying everything at least once, and the filthy nachos at least twice. If you haven't checked this place out, you're missing out.
