Dr. Gifford is the best! I've been going to him for about 3-4 years and he is hands-down the best eye doc in all Chicago! I recently moved out to California a few months ago, and I don't plan on finding an optometrist out here, rather just see him when I come home to visit each year.  He's seriously that awesome.

My first visit, I came in previously diagnosed with an astigmatism in one eye, and a different prescription for each eye. Annoying and expensive.  Dr. G told me that the astigmatism was there, but not enough to where I needed to pay the extra money for weighted lenses, regular would be just fine, and also that my prescriptions for each eye are so similar that I could use the same prescription for each eye! That means--no 'Left' box or 'Right' box to mix up! No extra fees for specially weighted (meaning especially pricey) contacts! Plus, the guy actually takes interest in you and what you do outside of visiting his hip little office once a year.  He keeps good conversation and genuinely cares.

The dude is super cool, invested in his patients, and looking out for your best interests for both your eyes and your wallet.  Stop looking at reviews, and book your appointment now.

Visited Red Eye for the first time - my boyfriend had gotten me a gift certificate which is what brought me in.

I feel like there isn't enough said on here about how great Dr. Andrew Kohn is.  I hadn't been to an optometrist in far too long (around 7 years) and so I was bracing myself for a little lecture at least.
Dr. Kohn is one of the most welcoming, personable doctors I've ever dealt with. Very thorough, really informative (which is fantastic - I love knowing what each exam is for) and all around a very cool guy.

The glasses selection is top-notch, with a really decent price range to fit your budget. I was in and out in just over an hour with new contacts to try out and glasses on order (she said they would be ready in about 7-10 business days).

Would definately go back! Will definately recommend to all of my far and near-sighted friends.

Dr Gifford is awesome.  His staff is super courteous and willing to help.  I walked into the office without an appointment for an eye oozing infection that was completely nasty. They were about to close and had two other people waiting.  They actually took me that day and resolved my issue.

Because of this I decided to get my yearly eye exam there and buy my glasses there.

I really enjoy my new glasses and would highly recommend visiting Dr Gifford.

I've had an eye exam here and also purchased a pair of glasses from them. Overall, it was a very good experience. Dr Gifford is super friendly, just a nice guy. He was totally cool that I wanted to take my contact lens prescription to get the contacts cheaper online and didn't try to pressure me into buying from Red Eye. I went back later to get glasses when eligible with my insurance again and found a great frame - their selection is good. It did take about 5 days to get the frames in, so know that it's not Lenscrafters. I took the frames back to get tightened up like 9 months later and Dr Gifford said the frames were actually coming apart and he would replace them ASAP. Within a few days the replacement was in and they switched them out at no charge. It was great because I had just gone in thinking they would tighten the screws, not realizing they were going to fall apart shortly. Anyway, great service, even if the girls at the counter sometimes have an attitude.

Dr Matt has been my optometrist  for about 8 years.  I've followed him from his Oak Park office.  Dr Matt and his staff are constant professionals who listen and explain  the whole eye process to their patients.  There are no rush jobs here.  The frame selection is unique and if there isn't a brand  or style you see, they'll try to locate it.
I highly recommend this eye shop.

I had an emergency with a broken pair of glasses. I called at least 8 places and no one could get me in. They schedule an appointment the same day. Dr. Andrew Kohn is great. He is extremely thorough.

There is a large variety of frame choices and fairly priced compared to other eyewear I viewed in other stores.

The best news was they will have my glasses ready within 7 days. Normally I would have had to wait 2 weeks. Great staff.

I rarely leave a five star review, but I feel the current rating they have is well earned.

The staff is very professional and courteous, willing to give you honest feedback and help you through the process of choosing a pair of glasses that work for you. This is the first time I've had vision insurance and the staff explained everything to help me maximize my benefit.

Dr. Gifford is an excellent optometrist, personable, and explained things about my eyes I never knew.

Their frame selection is good and I was able to find a style I liked. Will I be using Red Eye for all my optical needs? Yes.

One of the few places in Chicago that carry Shuron frames.  Shurons are a very old school American maker; you know the glasses that Michael Douglas wears in "Falling Down"?  Shurons.  If you like the whole 1950s retro thing, Shuron is the way to go.  It's the original, not a $500 re-interpretation of the original (though the re-interpretations can be pretty sweet).

Check out the Shuron website to see if anything catches your fancy.  If Red Eye doesn't have it, they can order it for you to try on.  You can order three frames at a time to try on.  The glasses arrive in a few days.  Also, Shuron makes in a ton of sizes, so you can really hone down the fit.

Also, very quick turnaround for getting lenses made.  I think my order took a week.

So why not five stars?  An anecdote about the relationship between insurance and pricing.  Red Eye was the only place I could find that carried Shurons and took VSP insurance.  Labrabbit carries Shurons but does not take VSP.  You can also purchase frames direct from Shuron.    For the exact same pair of glasses (Ronsir), Red Eye charges $180, Labrabbit charges $145, and Shuron direct charges $95.  In short, places that take insurance charge higher prices, as they know that the insured will pay them (since insurance gives a "frame allowance").  So if you don't have insurance, there are better deals to be had.

I have got to say I have the best frames I have ever had wearing glasses and contacts since I was about 7 Years old.
I feel confidant and look great!
Matt the Optometrist is kind caring and really wants you to be happy before you leave. No pressure sales here. He told me I could just put lenses in at the time my current 6 year old frames. I really needed new glasses. The frames I got are awesome and durable. I am also trying a trial pair of contacts till I get them right, For free.
The receptionists are great attentive and help you through the rigorous process of finding frames that look good on you.

As of the 1-2 star reviews of people on this Yelp thread on Red Eye.
I think next time you are walking down Milwaukee Ave, you should stop into "Batteries Not Included" find a proper large vibrating dildo, get batteries and insert up your bums. You might want to get lubrication also because I know it is tight. Either that or just move back to Schaumburg. Belive me!!!
You would be doing a Huge favor to the rest of the City of Chicago!!!!

    Thanks Red Eye Crew !!!!!!!!

We finally have an optometrist in Chicago, sweet! Dr. Gifford was so great and thorough, very nice as well.
They have some awesome frames - someone mentioned they start at $200, they absolutely do not, they start around $125? and they a couple cheaper than that as well. The receptionist was incredibly nice, really the whole experience was great. I highly recommend Dr. Gifford.

This is a great place to do business.  I normally feel a little intimidated when going to the eye doctor because there can be added expenses which are never really explained to me ... not here.  I made it known that I had no clue what my insurance included and that I was somewhat on a budget and they were so helpful and accommodating - even the doctor who made recommendations on ways to utilize my insurance in the best way and save some money.

They also have a great style of frames and were willing to let you try out different contacts at home before ordering them.

The previous writer who complained about their customer service only helped me see that they are very friendly and accommodating.  It sounds like they acknowledged that they made a mistake and were more than helpful in getting the product, apologizing and correcting the problem.  As a customer, I am glad to hear that they tried to make you happy - sorry they didn't, life isn't perfect.

I am giving Red Eye 1 more star for trying to cover their a$$es.

Yesterday, when I called and found out that my contacts still weren't in, after 2 weeks, I asked for a refund and a copy of my prescription.  Planning to take my contact lens business elsewhere.  A couple hours later I received a call from the Dr. himself to make a personal apology.  He offered to throw in 2 free boxes of contacts in addition to my order, to try to make it up to me.

Magically, this morning I get a phone call - my contacts are in.  I am almost wondering if they found my  review from 8/16, and decided to play nice.  On top of the 2 free boxes, they also gave me an unexpected gift card for Target.

My end conclusion, initially the lab where they get their contact supply must have screwed up.  I should also add that there are 3 different receptionists who work at Red Eye.  2 of them seem extremely incompetent.  These 2 were working when I dropped in last week, and I'm wondering if they even bothered to follow up on my missing contacts.

Hopefully I get LASIK this winter, so I won't have to deal with this BS again.  If I don't, I'll just take a copy of my prescription to Costco.  The boxes are much cheaper there anyway.

I'm sorry to write this, because everyone at Red Eye was very nice (and get an extra star for it).  If they were a sandwich shop, I wouldn't even bother, but this is Medical and I had a pretty terrible experience.  Beyond that, I picked Red Eye solely on their stellar Yelp reviews so I feel obligated to readjust their rating a bit.

I've been a glasses/contacts wearer since I was a teenager, and I've moved around a lot so I've seen my share of optometrists.  A year ago, I went to Red Eye to get new contacts and they never fit right.  I went back several times and was finally told, essentially, that I was not used to my new prescription and things would get better.  Never happened.

This was the first time I'd ever had substantially different prescriptions for either eye, so I finally abandoned the contacts for my L eye and used the R contacts for both.  Not great, but I could at least wear them for a few hours if I had to (sports, etc.).  So, I blew a bunch of money (and a year's worth of insurance) on contacts, half which were useless, and I had to wear my old glasses 95% of the time.

I went to Dr. Kwong at D/Vision a week ago, they fitted me for contacts and I've been wearing them 12+ hours a day, ever day, without a single problem.  Not only are they comfortable, my corrected vision is 20/15.

Dr. Kwong also told me what the problem was with my old contacts.  I've had an astigmatism for years and Red Eye gave me contacts I was never meant to wear.  By the way, the name isn't cute when you perpetually have red eyes because of their mistake.

I have been wearing glasses/contacts since I was 6 years old, so I have plenty of experience with optometrists. Red Eye is by FAR the best office I have ever been to. The staff at the front desk always greets me promptly and I rarely have had to wait more than 5 minutes.
Matt the optometrist (who goes by his first name, how cool!) is friendly and engaging. He is one of those people that can light up a room. Even more impressive, he donates his time every year to take a trip to Honduras to help people in need. What a guy!
During the exam, he goes through every step with an explanation. I have had countless eye exams in my life, and he is the first person who has ever explained all of the procedures, no matter how simple. The exam was quick and painless, and he gave me some sample contact lenses to try out, since my prescription changed a bit.
Additionally, their selection of glasses frames is amazing. They also have designer sunglasses, if you are interested in those. I haven't picked out my frames yet, but I plan on going back soon to do so.
All in all, I couldn't recommend a business more highly. Matt and his staff are great!

I have recently gone to Red Eye for my yearly check-up and I'm reminded why I love this place. It's small, cute, and friendly. When briefly waiting for Dr. Matt to begin my exam I saw photos next to the chair of him working with children outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. After working closely with a Haitian community this winter, this just expanded my love for Red Eye.

I recently switched to contacts and Red Eye has made it the most simple process ever. This place is great and honestly I don't plan on going anywhere else for eye-care again.

There are plenty of reasons why I will always come back here for all my eyeball needs..

1: Dr. Matt is really friendly, his assistants were also nice and approachable.

2: He let me try a bunch of contacts before I committed to one.

    3. They had a lot of great frames to choose from, even the sunglasses were awesome.

    4. A lady walked in while I was there, her frames broke and she was missing the screw. Dr. Matt fixed them for her, no charge, and she went on her merry way.

    5. A group of girls walked in, one considerably older (in her teens) than the other two. She explained to Dr. Matt that they had not come around because they still didn't have the money to pay for her sister's glasses. Dr. Matt gave the youngest girl the pair of glasses she needed and told the oldest that she could keep them and they can pay whenever they came up with the money, even if it was in small payments at a time. He said she shouldn't continue with her bad eyesight because of something like money.

    I think 5 is enough...

Wow. I couldn't be happier with our experience here. My husband, daughter, and I all went in recently for eye exams. He wears glasses, she needed them, and I wasn't sure. They let us take our time to pick out glasses. We never felt rushed or pressured. Everything is clearly labelled with a price range so it's easy to let your kids know if they should only look for green stickers or whatever. My prescription was so minor that Dr. Gifford told me I really didn't need glasses at all. That's funny. Pearle recommended I get two pairs the last time I had an eye exam. I guess my vision has improved in the last seven years? The absolute "above and beyond" customer service moment, though, was when I accidently broke my daughter's glasses two months after we got them. I went in to see if they could fix them (no, because I tried to use super glue like an idiot-again, my fault) but since they were still under warranty I could just get a new pair. Oh no! The ones I had were discontinued! Wait, not a problem. They just let us pick out any pair within the same price range instead. I will absolutely continue to go here for all our family's vision care needs.

    Pros:
Dr. Matt is kind of awesome - best eye doctor I've ever been to, no joke, He introduces himself as "Matt." He is rather hilarious. I'd have a beer with this guy, he's just cool.

Bonus points for not doing the "poof" test.

Friendly staff, the assistant helped me decipher my insurance coverage, especially in light of the fact that I'm about to be fired. She was also nice about helping me choose some sunglasses.

Nice (if pricey) selection of ladies glasses ($85 to $425, bulk in the $200+ range)

Duff beer can, autographed Reno 911 photo, pic of Mayor Daley, vintage pin up girl ads, etc. up behind the front counter.  Fantasticness x 10.

    Cons:
Limited selection of mens glasses (although the ones they have are  nice)

A bit on the spendy side, but not as $$$ as other places.

I'll be back - why would I go anywhere else?

Awesome. Dr. Matt is swell, the office is the least-stuffy place I have ever had an eye exam, the woman at the counter took time to deal with my crazy insurance issues, and...its a block away from my apartment. Score!

I haven't purchased frames in forever, so I can't comment on their prices. But my VSP insurance gives me $160 toward contacts - on my plan which expires 8/31/09 - Dr. Matt made sure that they billed the insurance company ahead of time for $160 worth of contacts, if they don't work out, I will have them covered and can exchange them at Red Eye for a credit.

    Wonderful customer service!

One hell of a boutique. Beautiful selection of designer frames, ones for which are not of my taste (i did my time with thick black frames...) But I recommend Red eye anyway. Prices high but you are getting quality designer frames people.

I was lucky enough to walk in and get an eye exam. Dr. Matt was extremely patient and thorough. Patient, with the whole 1-2 lense exam... Sometimes I think i'm crazy and can't tell the difference between 1 or 2 or even 6 or 7. Can't say I've ever had the eye pressure test with that viscous yellow dye, makes your eyes feel drunk and sticky- kinda weird.

This place is charming, Colleen is super helpful. Eye exam is $68, that's without insurance. You lucky bastards with insurance have it soo easy. I came for contacts and they had to order mine, because of a stigmatism, but should be in by Thursday.

This has to be the best experience I've had with a optician in ten years of glasses. Please don't go to lens crafters. Red Eye is where its at.

I've been getting regular check-ups and glasses here for a few years. Dr. Matt is a super nice guy and fair about prices while being in a neighborhood that normally hikes up prices on nice frames. It's pretty easy to get an appointment here (my last two have been same day appointments that they slipped me in) and the office staff are always delightful.

Like other Yelpers have said, he takes the anxiety out of the "Number one or number two" exam (which lens looks better exam, not pee pee or poo poo exam) and is totally patient and laid back.

He does take my insurance, but I've heard it's not too pricey if you don't have coverage.

Red Eye is a nice place and the staff is friendly and helpful.  BUT they don't have an onsite lab, so it takes a while to get your glasses.  (It took me nearly 2 weeks.)

The reason I'd never go back is their hours.  They're located in my neighborhood, not near my job, and it's been a struggle to get there while they're open.  Once I showed up 5 min before the posted closing time and they were already closed.  When I buy glasses I usually need them adjusted 3-4 times a year, and I need a place that's open reasonable hours that I can do that.  My glasses have been loose and slipping down for a month now, but i just can't seem to get there while they're open.

EDIT: the glasses I got had scratchproof coating and got COMPLETELY scratched.  Red Eye agreed to replace the lenses on warranty, but said it would take 3-5 business days.  So, they've had my glasses for... a week now.  What a pain.

Dr. Gifford is an absolute gem. The gentlest chairside manner, and the most thorough, pleasant visit you could hope for with an optometrist. The front office vibe manages to be stylish yet unpretentious. The exam room is a haven of patience and kindness. I recently had a chance to test their business practices due to a series of atypical needs on my end, and now I am even more impressed with this office. All that, and ongoing humanitarian work in near and faraway places. I have no intention of looking elsewhere for my eyecare needs.

I discovered this place after brunch one day.  Fed up with having glasses that had been purchased when I was a sophomore in high school [...] and motivated by an amazing health plan with my new job, I decided it was high time I find an eye doctor here.

I actually got glasses from here BEFORE I had an exam with Dr. Matt.  Six months later, I needed contacts and the exam, so I called them up.  I was used to my old eye doc having to schedule me months in advance, but they had me in the very next day.

I'm horrible with eye drops and most things having to do with the eye exam itself [I've had more than one eye exam where the technician is worried about  my eye pressure simply because I get so worked up].  Dr. Matt was really awesome, though - he did the entire exam himself, and made it seem almost normal that a machine was going to touch my eye.

The frame selection is small but varied just enough to make it work.  The contacts I ordered came in a week after I ordered them [average], and the price was to die for.  Now, if I can just settle on a dentist I like as much as this place...

If you're going blind, well, you're probably not reading this. But if I was going blind, I would go here.

1.) You seriously won't find a nicer optometry practice. Dr. Matt talked me through everything he was doing and laid out all of my options (including not getting glasses at all and just resting my eyes more often). And the girl at the counter was very helpful in explaining what my insurance covered.

2.) Their frames are very, very reasonably priced.

3.) How many optometrists do you know take time out of their year to trek down to Honduras to provide free eye exams and donate glasses to people who can't afford them like this guy does?

    That's what I thought.

Save your eyes, save some bucks, help the poor, support your local. THERE IS NOTHING NOT TO LIKE.

I signed up for yelp just to review this place. i woke up and my corneal ulcer flared up pretty bad. i went on yelp at 730am and left messages at 4 different optical offices. As soon as they opened they called me back and scheduled me for the first apt. NO other offices called me back. They were nice as hell and extremely helpful. thank you thank you. They were my heros.

AND to add onto that their frames are beautiful! I WILL be going back to get some frames.

I have been going  to this place for the last 7 years or so.  Before Dr. Matt there was a different doctor that was also super cool.  I left the city for 2 years, and went  right back to Red Eye...to find a new doctor.

This guy is just as cool if not cooler.  Like Jenny Z said, I too wouldn't mind having a beer with this guy.

The office is so comfortable, it's hard to call it an office.  You almost want to hang out there.  I haven't gotten my glasses here in a long time but I always go for my contacts and eye checkups.  It's so easy there.  I don't have money to spare, but I gladly order my contacts through them as opposed to online because that's how much I want to support this business.

If you need your eyes checked for glasses or contacts - this is the place to go. They take insurance if you got it, but if you don't it's affordable.

They also have great glasses and the other people working there could not be more helpful!

Dr. Matt and his staff were fantastic. Very laid back atmosphere in a great location that is convenient for anyone in the Wicker Park, Bucktown, or Ukranian Village areas. Dr. Matt gave a thorough exam and seemed to genuinely care about what the most affordable options were through my insurance. I bought a pair of frames for the first time in years; bonus for the nice staff member who gave me her opinions on what looked the best. Frames are more on the expensive side and somewhat small selection, but the quality and styles on hand make up for price. Eye exam itself was inexpensive ($10) and insurance covered most of everything.

I will definitely be going back and highly recommend for anyone who wants a boutique eye doctor experience with a personal touch.

This place is still awesome and I'm not shocked that they have maintained their 5 star ratings.  Their office space is remodeled and they have a much bigger selection of glasses since the last time I was there.

I'm a newbie to wearing glasses. I'm also very picky. That being said I wanted to walk in to a place and try on just about every pair of frames and not be bugged or pressured to purchase. Before coming to Red Eye I had visited a couple other opticals and was followed around being handed frames I never would have chosen. Ugh. I'm not into that. I'm more the 'acknowledge that I walked in, smile and let me know that if I need help you are there' type. This is exactly the customer service I received at Red Eye. The women that work there are all very friendly and helpful without being pushy. All the prices are clearly marked so that you know what you're getting into when you try them on. Very helpful. And the best part is that our glasses (my husband bought a pair as well) were ready in just 3 business days! I'm glad we made the choice to support a local business. You should too :)

Another year, another pair of glasses, another awesome experience w/ Dr. Matt.  I managed to drop my glasses on the floor and snap them in half recently, which I took as a sign to mean that I needed new glasses, stat.  I considered cheating on Red Eye for a minute or two, even had them send me a copy of my prescription, in hopes that I could go to Big Corporate Eyeglasses Evil and get new glasses on the same day so that I would be able to see again.  After Big Corporate Eyeglasses Evil said that they wouldn't be able to get me new glasses on the same day, and that it would take a week and a half-two weeks to get new glasses, I took THAT as a sign that I just should never have thought of cheating in the first place.

I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Matt in just a few days, and after an appointment on a Monday, my glasses were actually in on Friday.  Take THAT, two week time estimate from Big Corporate Eyeglasses Evil.

As always, Dr. Matt's exam manages to be relaxing yet thorough, and he explains everything he does, including the purpose of a new, nifty machine I'd never seen before.  I've been wearing glasses for 20 years now (omg) and I still manage to learn something new about my eyes every time I go in for an appointment with him.

Also, I'm pretty much convinced he's the coolest guy in the world.  The end.

Dr. Gifford has been excellent. I know this may sound odd - but when Dr. Gifford saw me the first time he had guessed that I had been wearing glasses/contacts since I was in 2nd grade. That amazed me that he was right on in his assumption and I've never been more at ease at a doctors office knowing he was dead on and he knew that within 5 minutes of looking at my eyes.

The hours are great. Receptionist was helpful when trying to figure out what types of frames I should choose and not pay much over what my insurance covers. Great selection of frames - designer or non.

Dr. Matt is the best!  It was the most thorough eye exam I've gotten in years.  I'll never have to go back to walmart optical again!

I just got contacts.  The displays of charming frames has me thinking I might be back.  Prices seemed very reasonable as well.

I can even forgive him for being a Cubs fan.

I've been wearing glasses since 4th grade and contacts since 8th (when my Mom deemed me "old enough").
My eyes have steadily going downhill and, being insurance-less, I was left with getting eye care from America's Best for most of my life.  That was okay, I guess, but it was impersonal and annoying at times.

The magical day came when I got vision insurance, and I immediately booked an appointment with Dr. Matt Gifford.  I'm lucky to live close by such a great place!  Dr. Matt was really friendly and informative, and even remembered me (and where I work) the next time I stopped in.  The blonde girl working the counter (sorry, I don't know her name) really knows about the frames and insurance options and helped me obtain a very affordable pair of specs (MUCH cheaper than the BS that America's Best was trying to sell me).

Seriously, no complaints here!  See for yourself!
In the meantime, I'll rejoice in the fact that I won't have to step foot in America's anymore.

i was looking for a new eye doc and one of my friends referred me to this place. Dr. Gifford is really friendly, as are his staff. and his boutique (it really has that feel!) is fabulous. he specializes in frames from europe, particularly paris. so if you're looking to change up your eye wear, you're sure to find something unique at red eye optical.

the hours of operation are really convenient as well, with some evenings open until 7:00, and saturday appointments for the working stiffs.
