This practice (Shadow Yoga) is challenging, yet based on sound principles, and if practiced on a regular basis it has a profound effect on the body, mind and spirit. I have taken Shadow Courses from the founder--Zhander Remete--as well as many of his followers.

Andy's approach to teaching is unique in that its soft, like a Taoist/martial artist, kind, and spacious. He embodies the practice like no other Shadow practitioner, he teaches by example, with humor and lightness, while competently grounded in scholarly understanding.

Andy inspires me to learn differently, a way that allows the practice to penetrate and turn this practice into my own, fully accepting my limitations and difficulties. This is satisfying after all my 'struggles' with Shadow.

If you are serious about learning a life-altering practice, there is no better place in the bay area, possibly in the state!

When we were planning where to live in East Bay, I kept doing map searches to see exactly how far I'd be from Andy's studio.  He is one of the most exceptional teachers I've had the honor to work with and I'm excited that he has his own studio with his wife, Maya, and offers even more classes.

I've been doing yoga for a number of years, starting with an Ashtanga/Iyengar blend, but would always have to stop and recover from different injuries.  After starting Shadow Yoga and working with Andy, I've been patient enough to watch my practice unfold, avoid injury, and have a good time in the process.

Andy's classes are filled with humor, precision, and wisdom a teacher can only attain when they live their practice.  Maya also teaches classes and provides a great compliment to Andy's style.  They even co-teach on occasion and it's a treat to have such a balanced couple checking on your yoga moves.

Put their studio on the map!

In my search for a yoga teacher, I accidentally stumbled upon a youtube video of the Shadow Yoga preludes and was spellbound by the beautiful mixture of martial arts, yoga, and Indian sacred dance moves.  Having taken some martial arts classes in the past, I was excited to discover a yoga practice that incorporates martial art moves.

I sought  out a local teacher and found that few places in the country offer Shadow Yoga classes. We are truly blessed to have someone like Andy in the "neighborhood."  I'm not one who is usually in awe of a teacher, but Andy is not only skilled in the practice, he is an extraordinarily intuitive teacher who combines instruction with humor, love, strength, and wisdom.  Even in a class full of students, he always seems to be speaking directly to me and what's going on with my practice and in my life.

Watching Andy's quiet, graceful, skillful movements is inspiring. After studying for a year with Andy I have gained flexibility, improved my health, and brought more discipline, strength, and acceptance into my life --- and, I've tackled and achieved some of the beautiful movements that originally looked like unreachable dreams when I first saw them in that youtube video.

I know it's very un-yogalike to beam with pride every time I glance down at my own legs doing lotus position, but it's been a rather long time coming. And it happened in Andy's class, so I feel honored to Yelp my appreciation here, and to conclude that it was probably Andy's presence alone that made my legs finally do that. What else could explain such a feat after god knows how many years of practice?

In any case. If you're looking for that special sauce that's missing from your yoga practice, then come check out Andy's class. He's ridiculously dedicated (getting up at 4 or 5am to do his own practice before starting class itself) and he emphasizes the refining of the movements, which are rather exquisite to see and do.

And who knows, something jaw-droppingly miraculous could happen to you, too...
