Great wine selection, very good food, and excellent, excellent service.

One of the better steaks I have had in town and I would say perhaps the best service I have received in Cincinnati.

    Oh, my.

I just returned from my "official" birthday celebration at Red in Hyde Park.

The service was superb.  To start, I ordered a glass of the Freja Pinot Noir while my dining partner ordered a simple Heineken Light.  My wine was smooth and finished cleanly, it was a decent pour in a massive glass.

We both enjoyed our salads (him; Cesar, me; Red House) and then we proceeded to order our entrees.  At first glance, we were both set on the Trio, a combination platter of New York Strip, Tiger Shrimp, and Diver Scallops.  On asking our waiter for advice on the dish, however, he advised us against ordering the Trio.  He explained that the strip steak offered in the dish was the lowest quality meat the restaurant served.  Based on his recommendation, we both ordered the Steak Oscar.

I enjoyed Red's take on Steak Oscar; instead of lump crab meat a small crab cake topped off a beautiful piece of filet.   The steak and the crab cake were delectable, the Bearnaise the finished the dish was incredibly rich but satisfying.  My dining partner almost licked his plate clean while I tried desperately to finish at least half of my hearty entree.

Our waiter had been informed that it was my birthday celebration half-way through the meal and he insisted on providing me with a "Passion for Red" cocktail on the house.  The drink consisted of champagne, chambord, and triple sec...it was stunning and delightful!

Before dessert (also on the house, thanks Red!) I ordered a Chocolate Ecstasy Martini, once again based on the recommendation of our well-versed server.  Vanilla Stoli and Godiva liquor combined to make one hell of a delicious dessert drink.  Paired with the flour-less chocolate torte, I was almost sent into a sugar coma (but in a good way :).

Atmosphere is intimate and warm; there are only about two dozen tables in the entire restaurant.  Lighting is low, it's a great setting for a romantic evening...though we saw a number of large business groups there this evening.

Moral of the story:  GO TO RED.  The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and I would go back in a second to repeat the experience.  The chef came out during our meal to welcome us to the restaurant and offer birthday greetings; I truly enjoyed the personal touch that Red provided us with.

The food was okay, and I must say, it's not worth the $200.00+ you're going to spend for your dinner.

Appetizers - We ordered the Brazilian Steak Tartare, which I thought was bland, but my date loved it. We also ordered the Shrimp Cocktail at at $15.00 for three shrimp, I thought I was being had. They were delicious though.

Salads- Caesar salad...good, but nothing groundbreaking.

Dinner- She ordered the 14oz New York strip, which was one of the best steaks she's ever had, but once again the price was high at $40.00. They certainly don't do the best job creating art on the plate, it was literally a NY strip on a white plate. I had the Seared Ahi Tuna that was overcooked. I don't think they have any idea what 'seared' means?

Wine- I had a the Coppola Cabernet, which was very good.

Atmosphere- I wasn't impressed with the decor at all, it felt second-rate. I'm not sure if it was the all white table clothes that were such a sharp contrast with the low-light, warm atmosphere. Upon leaving, it was so crowded at the bar, we had to wade through the bachelor scene and it really felt awkward for them to be there. Noisy place, as well.

Overall...just okay, not worth a second trip. I was left a bit underwhelmed.
If you really want the best steaks, go to Morton's on the square.

Wife and I went this past Saturday night 8:30PM. Restaurant was not crowded at all, which seems to be an indicator that this place will have a tough time surviving if they can't pack the place. Oh well. The decor is simple, lighting subdued, and the tables are not private, save for two booth-like areas. I would not consider this place to be a "romantic" eatery as your table is viewable by everyone. The menu, which someone mentioned on a review I read, is a la carte.

I ordered a steak with a large shrimp (it was huge, but it was only one shrimp) and a small scallop (once again, only one scallop). Some very bland and practically inedible mashed potatoes were included also. Steak was nothing impressive and I have had better at Morton's and Jeff Ruby's.

Wife ordered a steak with fries that came with some tasty ginger lemongrass butter if I recall. The steak was well seasoned and the fries were fine.

We also shared a macaroni and cheese appetizer that was very nice.

I was left thinking that the place is just ok and that if one is trying to impress someone or whatever, that it would be ok.

We used a http://restaurant.com coupon so $25 of the meal was covered by a small $3 coupon. If you have never used that site's coupons, I would recommend it as we would have never gone to Red otherwise.

Ultimately I would skip the place. Hopefully they can make some improvements and generate some business. Good luck!

Summary: The food is ok, prices are high, ambience is modern, and service is great.

I've been here 3 times now, and haven't been impressed any of the times.  The most recent experience was this week, where the steak I ordered (I had the steak, shrimp, and scallop item) medium was so charred that a whole side was burned.  I was also not pleased at how salty the steak was, where the sides especially were difficult to eat.  To be fair, this was my worst experience of the 3, thoguh I don't remember being impressed with my first 2 visits either.

Also, the menu is a la carte, so prices add up quickly.  Atmosphere seems to try really hard to be more 'New York' and almost comes across as pretentious?

It's a good thing the service is very good, or I do think I'd drop a star on teh rating...but I'd say this service is a definite plus.

My wife and I have been going here for quite some time and have accumulated about 6 visits over the last 18 months or so.

It used to be one of my favorite steak places in Cinti but has slipped since our last visit there last weekend.

The service is still good and the atmosphere about normal for a Cinti place but the food has gone down a bit. The selection that we had wasn't as appetizing as before. I probably didn't help myself this time as I ordered the fish (I was feeling full from lunch still) and was very disappointed with the Mahi Mahi. Slightly dry, tasteless and unimaginative. Even my wife's steak was a little balnder than normal.

On the bright side, the wine was as good as I have ever had it here and the sommelier very helpful.

Net, I'm sure we'll go back but I won't be rushing unless I hear things have picked up a bit.
