Today I really wanted to get my eyebrows waxed, so I called Red Chair and Howie hooked me up with an appointment with the salon's most recent addition, Jen the aesthetician.
I was interested in getting my eyelashes tinted as well, but the idea made me nervous. CHEMICALS NEAR MY EYES. But Jen reassured me, and, after doing an extremely good and efficient eyebrow wax on me, tinted my eyelashes.
Dudes, it looks AMAZING. I will never wear mascara again. It took about ten minutes, was completely painless, and Jen was fantastic.
The addition of the spa and spa services at Red Chair is awesome, in my opinion. I already love the Red Chair for it's atmosphere, excellent customer service and extremely skilled stylists. The addition of Jen is only making my experience there better.
Well done, guys.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Cut w/Amy - Awesome.
Had been walking by the salon for a couple of months before I decided to walk in and make an appointment for a cut. I asked who cuts curly hair well - and it was Amy. The day of the appointment, came in and was greeted by Amy. She was friendly and not overwhelming (unlike many stylists). She washed and cut my hair before it dried up - a little shorter than I like, but great nonetheless. Can't wait for the next cut.
Color (with another person, whose name I don't remember) - AWEFUL. TRAGIC. Wanted some carmel highlights to compliment my naturally dark brown curly hair. The stylists who was super duper sweet (and chatty) picked out some color - when it was done, was more gold/blonde than carmel.
I went home, and decided the next day that it was too light, called the salon and asked to have it fixed. They squeezed me in right away and this time - the stylist made it a little darker in parts but huge chunks of it were still VERY blonde.
In addition, she colored by hair the way one does straight hair. Instead of picking out chunks of curls, she did a horizontal number on my head. So in exactly 3 weeks - ALL the color had washed out (even with using color-friendly shampoo and cold water...seriously, who wants to blow $100 by using hot water).
And I was left with blonde blobs all over my head. Sad, ugly ...and never again. -

This place is awesome! I just moved her from New York and turned to Yelp to find a salon. I liked the reviews of this place a lot because it seemed like it had a super fun atmosphere but wasn't too snooty like a lot of up-scale salons. I was able to get a next day appointment (on Friday, a busy day usually) and book it online which was fantastic.
I have the classic situation of a natural blond forgotten by nature, so now I have to help it along lol. Meaning, blond highlights to help my mousy yucky colored hair. Monica was my stylist and she knew exactly what to do! According to me, it's just highlights, but she said that it would be way better with low lights and toner as well after we talked about the very strange mixture of colors I had happening in my hair as a result of previous highlighting. So like many other not-so-natural-any-more blonds, I added up all the stuff she was saying in my head and guessed about $250 at least. I mean, this was partial high lights, low lights, toner, hair cut and blow dry. In New York that would easy be over $300 at any decent place. So I just settled in and decided to suck it up because let's face it , who wants to run around with a mop of nasty hair on your head? OK a lot of people I will admit seem to be fine with it but not this natural blond lol. SO.. guess what... after 2 and a half hours which ended at 8pm she charged me $130!! I was in shock. That's an amazing price for so many services and this was a great job she did. Monica was super careful to make sure I got exactly what I wanted and didn't rush me at all. We shut down the place and I couldn't believe how patient she was even though it was so late on a Friday.
So the final test was the date I had that night, which was a first date, and he loved my hair! Of course he did- it really did look fabulous. Thanks Monica!! -

I've been cutting my own hair for years, but I decided I should grow up and pay a professional to give me a real haircut. I live in the neighborhood and decided to give the Red Chair a try. When I called, they had an appointment the very next day at my preferred time, which was a good start. When I showed up, Tiffany greeted me at the door and I learned that she would be my stylist, too. After discussing options with me, we decided on a simple buzz cut (which is how I'd been cutting my own hair for a long, long time) and she was quick, friendly, and skilled. I was glad she didn't try to upsell me by convincing me to try a fancier, more expensive style. The price was reasonable, I was happy with the results, and she made me feel comfortable without trying too hard to make small talk.
I suggest you give this place a try if you haven't already. I plan to go back and see them again when the time comes. -

i know, it says Knate;but, I'm Charlene his lovely wife and even more lovely since Monica cut my hair. I adore it and so does my husband. I have super curly, stark white(natural) hair and didn't want to look like one of the cast of the Golden Girls. Monica gave me a short pixie or as my husband calls it- gnome cut. Got to snuggle with Sidney, the dog, and it was a really nice time. Will definitely recommend the salon and next time bring Sidney some home made doggy biscuits.

I went to Red Chair the Thursday before Christmas because I was desperate for a pedicure before I went to Florida and had to expose my toes to the world. Not only did Jen move her lunch to take care of me, but she also fit in a brow wax and tint and a manicure to the schedule. For the brow part of the appointment, she did a fabulous job. The shape is perfect and the tint was great. As a natural blonde, I want to have a little more color but not so much that it's jarring, Jen didn't hesitate to get some advice from a colorist first to make sure she had the right formula for me. The results were great. The pedicure and manicure were also wonderful. The chair leaves a little to be desired, it's noisy and not a great massage, but Jen was great. My toes were definitely flip-flop ready. She also convinced me to try a Shellac manicure and boy am I glad she did. My nails looked great for weeks and it was totally worth the upgrade fee.
I'm headed back to Jen to keep my nails, toes and brows in check and I'm going to try a haircut this time around as well. I used to go to a salon downtown that handled all of my beauty needs but stopped going because I felt like they didn't really listen to me and parking was an issue. I'm really hoping that Red Chair becomes my new all-service salon! -

One day when I had evening plans on 15th Ave E, I realized I really wanted a haircut, so I got on Yelp and searched for a salon with good/great reviews in the area.
I found Red Chair Salon and lucked out when my 5pm call resulted in a ~6:30pm haircut with Amy. My last-minute calls RARELY lead to a same-day appointment!
The employees were all very nice, and made sure to call me when they learned the client before me had really long hair, and her appointment would run a little late. Having time for a drink before my cut is fine by me!
I got a good cut, but it felt very... rushed. She was washing my hair and they were approaching closing time when a client came in for a color that had been scheduled on a post-it note, or something, weeks before. (They were between appointment books at the time.) She seemed like a regular and Amy was the one she was there to see, so she ended up hurrying through my appointment so she could do the color and then close up the salon for the day.
Thankfully my cut/style worked out well and nobody was hurt in the process, but I spent about $50 on that appointment, and I was a little bit put off by how rushed it was.Listed in: Scalp Massages & Styling…

I got haircut-impatient and my stylist was booked out a long time, so I took a same day appointment at Red Chair. Wow, was that a good idea. Tiffany gave me what has been universally agreed to be the best haircut of my life (and I've been getting essentially the same looks-like-a-Wes-Anderson-movie-version-of-myself bowl-cut/a-line bob since 2005, with a couple vain attempts to chop it off/grow it out/get an asymmetrical haircut that's cooler than I am). What's notable is that stylists always, ALWAYS try to argue me out of my beloved, campy Velma from Scooby Doo haircut, insisting that my hair parts naturally to the side (it has never once fallen that way by itself -- and I don't brush it), or that I would look better without bangs or at least without the blunt, short bangs I love. Tiffany totally got it! She made the beloved, much maligned haircut work for me better than anyone else -- I've been asked several times where I get my hair cut, always a good sign.
She also did a great job with the color. I've been smiling at myself when I look in the mirror, even if I just let my hair air dry. I didn't have the highest expectations for Red Chair - it was kind of an impulse cut/color because I hadn't gotten my hair cut since, oh, July - , but I was totally impressed. Their prices are beyond reasonable, too. -

Worst color I've ever had. I'm really sad to say it, because everyone there was really sweet. But I wanted some streaks, just a few simple narrow, pencil-sized streaks, and I now have huge swathes of black all over - about 75 percent of my hair is black. There are even blobs of black where she missed with the brush and hit other areas. We talked for a long time before it was done, and we were using the same language, but then she was distracted and talking to everyone else and answering the phone and it looks like I just took a paintbrush and did it myself. One side has two huge solid black chunks, one is an inch wide, the other is two inches wide. The other side just has it all mixed in for the whole wide of my hair - no streaks, just blended in.
The cut is ok.
Edit: I have had 7 comments and messages from the husband of the salon owner. As I said, the woman who did my hair was distracted, answering the phone, a lot of other things were going on, but she was very sweet, and unfortunately my hair is not what she said she'd do. I don't think it's appropriate for her husband to repeatedly message me, put up comments, take them down, put up different comments, etc.Comment from Howie S. of Red Chair Salon 9/7/2011

Amy's been cutting my hair since before she opened Red Chair Salon. She's always been great about giving me the cut that I want. All of the stylists there are very personable and I have several friends that get their hair done @ RCS by either Amy or Kim. We also take my 3-year-old there to get his hair cut. He went through a phase where he did NOT want to get his hair cut and they all roll with it and help entertain/distract him while his hair is being cut. I made the mistake of taking him to the barber shop on 15th last time and there were many tears (he hates clippers).
Without hesitation, I recommend Red Chair and any of the stylists there to all of my friends. -

My first time around was mixed. I didn't have the right stylist. That much is obvious. Jesse, however, who got cut at the same time as me, and got a FABULOUS cut.
This time (today), I'm happy to report that not only did Jesse get another amazing cut, Amy was also able to fix my hair. It's still shorter than I want (and until some kind of miracle grow potion is invented, she can't very well fix that), but she cut it in a way that not only looks fabulous today, but is also working towards the eventual style I want (once the length gets there).
They were all very kind and took great care of Jesse and me.
Biggest thing? My hair is cut well, I don't look like a marshmallow head, and I don't look like a nice-nice suburban soccer mom.
*breathes sigh of relief*
Thank you, Amy (and staff (and Howie)), for fixing my hair and making me a true believer in Red Chair Salon.

End of the year and time for a quick update. I've seen Amy several more times since the first review and she's been awesome each and every time. I especially appreciate how considerate she is about working around the hearing aid issues, as at other places, most of my salon time has been me staring boredly at the mirror while the stylist chatted with someone else. Here, I get to be part of the conversation for all but maybe 5 minutes.
Not only is Amy a genius with her scissors and dye, but the woman gives a super brow wax as well! I'm not a complete wuss when it comes to pain, but I'm definitely not a masochist either and so I have a tendency to put the waxing off...and off...and off. After a year(!) of no waxing, the brows were in dire need. It still made my eyes water a bit, but was one of the quickest, least painful waxing experiences I've had, and the brows look incredible.
Bonus: Being surprised with a 10% off check-in offer when checking into Yelp.Listed in: Round the Hill

I LOVE the Red Chair Salon. Everyone who works there is friendly and funny, it's in a great location, and Amy is the best! I've referred many people to the Red Chair and not one bad experience reported from them or myself. You cannot beat the price either unless you head on down to Supercuts or the like.

I have to say this is by FAR the BEST salon I've ever visited. Never EVER will I go anywhere else! Not only do they offer the best prices in Seattle for all of their services, but the atmosphere of the salon is just an all around cool place to hang out and chat while you get your hair done. The first time I went in Donna did an amazing balayage color on my hair. I had already made an appt. at Vain who charges around $150 for balayage but when I found out it was only $85 at Red Chair I decided to give it a try and I'm so so glad I did. Donna was so fun to chat with and really paid attention to what I wanted. I've gotten so many compliments on my color it's crazy! So thanks ladies of Red Chair you totally made my life! So glad to have found you!

Love the ladies here.
They give me a simple (cheap) buzz, they're pleasantly chatty (where else can I discuss mycology, haunted apartments, neighborhood gossip about that Scooby-Doo-ish rotting old mansion that nobody seems to live in?) and I can usually sneak in a non-reserved cut during the hours they're operating, even closer to the weekend. I've also had them squeeze me in between appointments when I can get away with it.
The wait isn't too terrible, the free soda/tea is a relaxing perk, it's a very nice shop and I'm glad to have it in the community. -

Hair dresser actually listened to what I requested: check
Totally unpretentious, not making me feel bad about never blow drying my hair attitudes: check
Dried the cut and then went back on her own to make adjustments without me asking: check
Didn't feel intimidated to ask for it to be a bit shorter: check
No awkward conversation and just the right amount of banter: check
All in all, this was the best hair cut I've had in a long time, and for way less money! $35 was completely affordable and they were able to squeeze me a half hour after I called.

I once again had a fantastic visit with Kim. Every time I go, I think it is the best haircut I have ever had. Today was no exception. I absolutely love my hair. Kim was as personable and awesome as always. Even going above and beyond with her service. She complimented me and completely made my day (even my week). Red Chair Salon is amazing! I went in with hair down to the small of my back, wanting to cut it short & donate it to Locks of Love. The owner Amy took on the task & did such an awesome job! I'm still loving the style she called "A-symmetrical Pixie", it's easy & so SASSY! I'll definitely be referring everyone I know to Red Chair Salon, and also will be going back for follow-up maintenance of my new do. Did I mention how AWESOME this place is??? Go there & see for yourself!!! You won't be disappointed.

I've seen Donna twice now since I moved to Seattle in June and I love her! She just cut my long curly hair into a longish bob and I love it! I was pretty nervous and scared but I love the flirty and sophisticated cut and I've already received tons of compliments! She also colors my hair blonde (naturally brunette) and I love how it turns out!
You can tell that Donna really loves what she does and she truly wants you to look your best! -

I literally JUST got home from getting my hair done by Kim and I couldn't be more ecstatic.
Since I moved about a year ago, I've been putting off the search for my new "go-to" stylist - especially since back in my hometown, I'd had the same stylist for over TEN years!!!
I called up Red Chair after skimming mostly glowing reviews and was booked with Kim. I arrived about 5 minutes early but she didn't skip a beat at all and seated me immediately despite the early hour (on a Saturday no less).
Being the frenetic person I am, I had several photos printed out and a very scatter-brained explanation of what I was envisioning. I've basically run my hair through the style gauntlet and done every cut you can imagine, so I decided to stick with a style I was familiar with, and Kim immediately picked up on what I was *attempting* to communicate.
She cut over 3 inches off my hair, thinned out my out-of-control layers/growth, AND did a blow-dry+styling in about 30 minutes. We chatted about boyfriends and our careers and it was really one of the most lovely haircut experiences I've had in the long time. It's rare to find a genuinely kind hair stylist who loves what they do, and Kim's definitely that. I'm not letting anyone else touch my locks from now on and I'd easily follow Kim even if she left Red Chair. I'm sure the other stylists are equally talented, and altogether, the entire staff was warm and friendly, like a family.
(oh and bonus points for being from my hometown Kim!) -
Review from James E.
I really don't want to give Red Chair such a poor rating but my haircut wasn't executed well at all.
The woman who usually cuts my hair was out of town, and naturally my immediate gratification kicked in: I couldn't wait for her return, I needed a haircut right now. I walked into Red Chair and made an appointment for later that afternoon when I returned from running errands. By running errands, I mean biking to and from Costco during Seattle's heat wave.
I arrived for my appointment a hot, sweaty mess. Emphasis on sweaty. Kim was my stylist and she kindly offered to wash my hair using cool water and keeping a cool towel on my neck as she cut my hair.
I want to emphasize that Kim could not have been any nicer. Seriously, her customer service is top-notch.
Unfortunately, my haircut wasn't as great as Kim's customer service. I returned to my usual stylist who took one look at my head and said, "this is gonna take another few weeks to grow out and fix." The bangs on the right side of my head were prominently shorter than the left and large strands of hair were visible from both my temples. My neckline was taken in too short and the sides of my head showed visible hair levels.
I was told to style my hair from left-to-right in the front until my bangs are long enough that they can resume an even level.
A lot of reviews for the salon are five stars so I'm going to chalk up my experience to one of those freak events that only occur during a mercury retrograde and my Saturn return is teaching me a lesson in waiting patiently to see my usual stylist. Sorry, Red Chair.Comment from Howie S. of Red Chair Salon 9/4/2009

I like this place quite a bit, but the real reason why I come here is for their stylist Donna. I started seeing her when she worked at Zero Zero, and when I found out that she moved to Red Chair I immediately started going there; especially since it's only a few blocks away.
I've recommended Donna to a number of friends, both male and female, and have never heard anything but rave reviews. My hair seems like it would be pretty easy to cut, but somehow I've had a number of other people manage to screw it up anyway; not only does Donna always do a great job, but she's a super cool person. Highly recommended. -

Yay! the anticipated Red Chair Salon has finally opened! My favorite stylists in the city, that I have been going to for years.. just broke out to their own salon ownership.
Located on trendy 15th Street in Cap Hill-- this is a fun location near lots of shops and cafes. The decor is blood red, my fav color, and they have original velvet Cinerama movie seats for the customer waiting area.
A no frills attitude of fast service keeps your costs down, way down. Sorry you don't get a hand massage with your cut.. but you do get a fantastic cut and color by fun talented professionals. -- I just did and couldn't be happier.
Pros:
-Great Prices for Talented Hair Stylists
-Gothy, Synth and 80's style of music as your soundtrack
-Variety of Colors to choose from
-They do both Walk ins and appointments
Cons:
-You need to be a 'ninja' at parking on this street. Bike or Bus is best. -

I wandered in to Red Chair because I'm on a budget lately and they charge half what my normal stylist does. I didn't have an appointment and I only had to wait ten minutes which was nice.
Unfortunately I'm not thrilled with my hair cut. I got the same cut I usually get, an inverted bob. With my old stylist my hair looked great with minimal effort but with this cut I have to spend a lot of extra time teasing it in front of the mirror. Also my bangs ended up very noticeably crooked. I had to go back and get them fixed.* I should have piped up when I noticed she really didn't make an effort to ensure that the my bangs were orderly before cutting them.
The stylist also committed one of my biggest pet peeves - talking to other stylists more than me. I'm perfectly fine with a focused quiet stylist, and I enjoy chatting, but when they're chattering away with other stylists it makes me feel like I'm not valued as a customer.
* When I returned to get my bangs fixed they were very helpful, fitting me in as soon as possible and offering me refreshment. The woman who straightened the line of my bangs did a much better job. -

I walk by Red Chair about 10 times a day (living in the neighborhood and all) and was getting pretty shaggy, so I thought I'd stop in.
I have short, dumb guy hair that I'm secretly self conscious of. The wonderful Kim took care and time to make me walk out feeling all kinds of awesome about my new cut.
I have to admit, I'm loathe to entertain small talk, but Kim seemed like someone I'd be bullshitting with at a bar on 15th, it made the time go by nicely.
She also recommended great styling products (a subject I'm so not versed in). I came out happy and looking much better.
Thanks, Red Chair. -

My up-do appointment was officially with Kim, who was awesome, but Kelley chipped in too to get lots of hair up and curled quickly. Both beautiful ladies seemed to genuinely love their jobs and doing hair. I think I was the last appointment on a Sat night and they didn't lack any enthusiasm. They put up with my tender head and the fact that I had no idea how I wanted my hair done. I described my dress and they took it from there. Turned out really great.
The owners Howie and Amy were especially friendly and I fell in love with the salon dog, who had the best hair/fur of us all.
I can't wait until I need my hair cut so I can go back and hang out with all five of them. -

As a recent transplant to Seattle, I put off getting a haircut until I started to look like an even shaggier version of Justin Bieber (Oh ya, it was bad). The receptionist greeted me as soon as I walked in the door, and even offered me a cold or hot beverage! Hot potato I hit the jackpot, ladies and gentlemen. Donna at Red Chair Salon trimmed my colossus nest of hair and did it WELL. By "well" I mean they did it how it should be done. You know, when stylists take the time to use scissors and make sure things are even and straight. For a guy who followed the same gal from salon to salon for four years back in Missouri, I was pretty impressed with my first visit.

As a Capitol Hill local, I've been looking for a salon that is affordable and makes me look fabulous. It's on 15th Ave, so I walk by it all the time. I would never go here again, from my experience they don't understand "asymmetrical blunt bangs" even with an amazingly clear picture for reference. I didn't even know it was possible to mess up that bad. Half of my bangs are from hair in the middle of my head?! The next salon I went to to have it fixed was in shock at how bad this bang job was.

Ah, Amy... Cutter of Hair, Fulfiller of Dreams.
I decided last Friday that I couldn't take it anymore: long, lifeless locks, no available appointments at my usual place, and I hadn't really been getting what I wanted there, anyway. So I hopped on Yelp, saw all the great reviews for Red Chair (and especially Amy), and then saw that one of those raves was from my good friend (hi, Laura T.!), who has been getting pretty awesome haircuts lately.
Amy had an opening that afternoon, and now my life is complete. We talked about my hair, she showed me some pics, the atmosphere was friendly and funny while she cut, and she styled me beautifully. Now, honestly, I usually love my hair when I walk out of a salon. The true test comes when I "do" it myself. The first time I clean it, comb it, scrunch some product into it, and then leave it utterly alone is when I often realize I don't love it so much. Not this time- Amy cut my waves PERFECTLY! I couldn't take my eyes off of myself (leading to an awkward moment at a gas station). It's a lot easier to actually do now (blow dry and curl, when I feel like it), and still looks great thrown into a ponytail for work.
So thank you, thank you, sweet Amy... I will definitely be back for more. -

Kim is the best! I have tried several other places in Seattle, but I keep going back to Kim at Red Chair Salon. She is great! I think I go through phases where I feel like I want to look homely, and in those phases I go to some other place and get a boring/dowdy haircut, then when I want to look good again I go back to Kim.

30 years on this plant and finally I found someone I trust to cut my hair!
Kelley is super amazing awesomeness!
I tell her sorta kinda what I'm thinking/want and somehow she manages to understand my hair talk babble ramblings and gives me exactly what I asked for!
Update: Ahhhhhh Kelley is no longer working here!
This makes me so sad. She was my reason for loving this place so much.
When I asked where she moved onto I was given the "we don't know" bullarny.... Boooooo.
If your out there Kelley let me know where you went so I can follow. -

My old salon closed recently so I decided to check out Red Chair since it is in my neighborhood. I have my hair done a lot so I like adventurous hair stylists and figured that is what I'd find here. Of course, I also need someone knowledgeable since my hair is rather damaged from all the adventures!
So Kim did a cut and color. The color looked ok and the cut was awesome. However, I quickly realized that despite having all over color AND lowlights, my hair really looked about the same. I was pretty unhappy when NO ONE even noticed I'd had my hair done and it still had the same old yucky worn out color. Instead of being passive aggressive and complaining a bunch, I decided to just call and they had me come in the next day. Kim was totally cool and redid my color and I love it. They were all super friendly.
The thing is, hair is weird and sometimes we as customers might not be extremely eloquent in explaining what we want. I was very impressed with this salon's friendliness and professionalism and I will definitely be going back again! -

I have been a fan of Amy and Kelley since their last place, a place that shall remain nameless and unrated.
The salon is comfortable while you wait for your appointment, in the Red Chairs, theater style. You can look up your next tattoo in the magazines and chill to the soundtrack.
Even though I keep pretty short hair, Kelley has always done a perfect job; it's like she can read my freakin' mind or something. She always does little extras from offering me a soda to cutting a textured pattern so my hair falls the way I like it (messy style), and gives good suggestions when I want to go out of my comfort-zone hairstyle.
Owners Amy and Howie are the nicest people you will meet, and they run a cool business.

Walked in Friday morning to get a quick cut before picking up my son, and Donna made it happen. It was a dry cut because I didn't have much time, & she got the job done. I love the cut, and I was on time for my boy.

I've come here twice and gone to Kim both times. She is an incredible stylist and so much fun! I explained to her that I needed a low maintenance cut and color, and she immediately had a vision and went with it. I absolutely love what she did with my hair and walked out feeling like I had won a "before and after" makeover. Everyone in the salon is really nice and friendly. I would recommend Red Chair Salon (and Kim in particular) to anyone in and around Seattle looking for a new amazing, hilarious, and kind stylist!

Amy did an amazing job on her first try at my hair, and she was a lot of fun to talk to. Her scalp massage was pretty phenomenal too. I'd definitely recommend.
