Red 7 Salon is very convenient for me since I work across the river.  It is located just north of the Merchandise Mart.  I tried this salon for the first time because I received a $20 off coupon. I usally go to a different salon in the River North area, but since my favorite stylist does not work there anymore, I was forced to find a different stylist.

When shampooing your hair at Red 7, they give you a scalp massage.  This was so great as I visited the salon on my lunch break.  It was a wonderful way to spend a lunch break.  I also like the shampoo they used on my hair and ended up purchasing it.  It was called Creme de Coco by Bumble & Bumble.  They even gave me a free sample of hand relief lotion.

I had my haircut by Meryl.  She is wonderful and easy to talk to.  She really takes all factors into consideration when styling your cut.  I also received a COMPLIMENTARY hand massage while Meryl was cutting my hair.

This place is great for its location and it's superb service!  You must try this place at least once.  If you do want to try it out, I did receive another coupon for $20 off.  So just contact me if you would like it.

I've been to this place twice in the last 2 months. Yes, I go to get my haircut every 4 weeks, sometimes 5 if I'm on vacation. One of my buddies rec'd this place years ago, but haven't gone till recently because the place I was going to screwed me up bad! My girlfriend even went with me last time to get a dye job and loved it, guess she'll be back. Overall, great place. Very talented people and in with my girl, that's a bonus.

Cute salon, kinda feels like you are going to a friend's house for a hair cut. Everyone there had great style and it was a good vibe.

It was my first time And I had printed out an online coupon for Red 7. When I made the appointment I made sure to mention the coupon to the person taking my info.

The salon got really busy fast (I went on a Saturday morning). My stylist was very nice, I can't remember her name now, but she was running behind so she didn't style my hair after cutting it and only half dried it. I am pretty easy going so I was ok with that, she was nice and I didn't want to stress her out since she had appointments backing up.

When I went to checkout they wouln't let me use my coupon because it was only good for a junior stylist and my stylist was not junior. You'd think the guy who set my appointment would have booked me with a stylist that would allow me to use the coupon, not a more senior person. I left the salon with wet hair and still had to pay about $120 for a cut and 2 products. Not my idea of a good value or perfect service.

The cut was cute but hard to style myself later. It grew out nicely though.

I haven't been back there since, which is a bummer because I really wanted to like this place.

Red 7 is a great salon for color.  I didn't really enjoy my haircut experience--it wasn't bad, but I didn't feel like the stylist took my instructions seriously about not chopping too much at the front--but it ended up looking okay.  The coloring is great.  Everyone is super nice and they offer you a free hand massage while you get your color/cut.  Just don't park in the meters after 4 PM around the neighborhood--my car got towed!

I've been here a number of times.  The first time I went, I had Ivy take my color from blond to a deep red, and she rocked it.  I also had my hair cut, unfortunately I can't remember the name of the stylist, and I got a nice cut with the usual long layers.  Everyone on staff here was amazing-there were fresh cookies to snack on, a killer scalp massage, and a hand and arm massage included.  I even brought my sister here years after a disastrous highlight job (clumps of hair basically fell out), and Ivy was able to put her at ease and give her georgous, natural highlights.  She even accepted a coupon I had found after I had booked the appointment.  The only disappointment I ever had here was when they were running behind on appointments one day, and since my cut and color were rushed, the cut wasn't the usual and the color wasn't left on long enough to take.

In short, I got the best haircut of my life to date. The stylist, Laura, was nice and friendly (good qualities in a stylist), but more importantly asked me about a million questions about my hair so she could be sure she gave me exactly what I wanted. I have deceptively fine, curly hair that's kind of puzzling to work with. She asked me about past haircuts, how I style it, how I like my curls to form, if I use any product, if I ever straighten my hair, etc etc etc. She told me exactly how she was cutting my hair and why, what product she was putting in my hair and what it would do for my curls.

By the end of the cut, I told her it was the first haircut I ever had where I didn't want to immediately rush home and re-wash my hair. Plus, I'm able to style it easily on my own.

In short, I'm thrilled by the experience. The friendliness of the staff, the shampoo/scalp massage and complimentary hand massage, offers of water/coffee/tea/etc...they're just icing on the cake! I'll definitely be back!

I had the same hairstylist for a decade but then she moved.  So I was reduced to trying numerous salons and stylists and Red 7 is the one that I finally decided to stick with.

I love the ambience here.  Everyone is friendly and people really seem to enjoy working there (even if they don't, it's nice that they pretend).  I love that the owners did not gut all of the interior walls and make a big, generic space but rather kept the homey feel and decorated with sofas and curtains.  It's really pleasant.  I also like that I have, at various times, been served with water, juice, and once a root beer float.  Gotta love it!

I get my hair cut by Laura and she always does a great job keeping my bob in order.  I have really straight hair and bangs so I appreciate how particular she is when cutting my hair because every little mistake shows.

The only complaint I have is that they still don't have a manicurist on staff.  In fact, I don't even remember when they last had someone there.  It would be really nice to be able to get a manicure at the same time as a haircut.

I have yet to find someone in the city that I like enough to go back to.  As you can probably guess, I am still looking. I tried Red 7 based on a recc form my friend.  She likes Matt (a stylist that has since moved to the Evanston location).  I liked him too.  He was fast, good, and didn't try to sell me products when I was leaving.   FYI, I am totally the person that thinks I can recreate the look but I can't b/c I don't have the right products!  He saved me from myself and my desire to spend.  That was awesome.

The rest of the staff was not so awesome.  They were so irritated with the idea of having to work, that they all had sour looks on their faces and they were too busy chatting to do their job. It was weird.  Matt, was great, friendly, and attentive....everyone else was not.

love coming here whenever i'm in town. great convenient location off of the El Brown line, friendly staff, with a laid back atmosphere. not only do i get great cuts, but i always have a great time when i get a new style with Meryl. She makes getting your haircut fun. she's also really easy to talk to and goes over what you want and what you're looking for prior to the cut.  she also goes over how i can achieve the same look when i'm on my own. It is a little pricey, but the salon's complimentary candy, drinks, hand massages, receipt fortunes (cool!), and non-pretentious atmosphere are definitely a plus.

TIP: like other yelpers mentioned, check out their website for coupons or promotions, especially on your first cut.

Outstanding! I live in Portland, but travel to Chicago a few times a year. While I have a stylist here whom I love, I will go that extra week or two in need of a haircut so that I can have Meryl do my hair. Attentive, sharp, funny, and really great at what she does. Needless to say, regardless of my style (I've been through quite a few), I've never been disappointed.
The salon in general is a very warm and welcoming place. I'd highly recommend it!

I have been here twice now, and I think I will become a regular now. The place is very casual, which may be refreshing for those who feel uncomfortable in fancy schmancy salons (like me..hehe). The downtown location is really close to the Merchandise Mart (across the street, in fact), and right off the El stop. Convenient, no? (I thought so because I was able to fit in the hair cut and go to the One of a Kind show right after.)

I saw Crystal both times. She's cute and bubbly, and she knew how to help my straight, thin hair.  She gave me some styling tips and suggested hair products that could be helpful, without pressuring to buy. They sell Aveda and Bumble products as well as a few of the usual salon brands.  My simple hair cut/blow-dry/style is a little more than I usually pay for, but I love my bouncy new do (though it'll never look as good as it did then)!

Completely worth your time and money!  Everyone is friendly and chatty - and does a great job as well.  When I was there on a Saturday, they had drinks and snacks and I was pampered with a complementary hand massage.  My colorist, Ivy, was amazing; and my stylist Meryl is the BEST!  I'm so glad to find a place I can trust with my unruly curly hari... I just can't say enough good things about this place.

I can see why everyone really likes this place. The salon is adorable and everyone there is so nice. The second you walk in everyone says hi and offers to make you as comfortable as possible. I love getting that kind of service in a place that isn't stuffy and old.  A little over priced for what i got (trim and blow out) but i would highly recommend them anyway.

These ladies are awesome. Ask for Meryl, she is a sweetheart and smart too! She took time before ever picking a thing up to ask about my hair and explain what she was thinking about doing. The shampoo massage is nice, and they offered a hand massage, although (as a guy) I feel a little awkward getting such treatment. I did feel nice and relaxed by the time the shampoo was done though.

The prices are definitely on the expensive side, about twice what I normally pay for a cut, but the service is exceptional. Everyone is attentive, upbeat and friendly. I will definitely be back...

Red 7 is one of those places I look forward to going to every time!  Meryl is talented, funny, and a pleasure to talk with - and everyone there always has a smile.  The hand massages (free!) are such a nice perk, and the shampoos are luxurious, too - always a great head massage.  Prices are up there but reasonable for what you get - my cuts always grow out nicely and they offer free bang trims in between cuts.  When I went on Valentine's Day they gave all customers a flower and chocolates.  Love love love them.

three stars.

if i was a yelper after my first hair cut, i would have 100% given it 5 stars.
it is THE cutest salon, friendly staff, and comfortable atmosphere.
amazing scalp massage during your 'poo and a complimentary hand massage during your cut. soooo relaxing.
downside: a bit pricey.

minus two stars because my second hair cut included my stylist chopping off more than half of my already shortish hair.  i asked for 'between shoulders and chin length' but got a shaved neck instead :\
i was almost in tears when i saw the results.

if i go back, which is a definite possibility, i will choose a new stylist.

I have been going to Red 7 Salon since my sister got married 3 years ago...and have never been disappointed.  Getting my hair cut and/or colored here is literally something I look forward to as not only a necessity but a treat. You're not going to find hairstylists in tight fitting black and white clothing and techno pumping in the background, rather a quaint laid back atmosphere complete with delicious coffee, candy, sofas to rest on while you wait and complementary hand massages.  So enough about the atmosphere...my stylist Maya is the only person I trust to cut my long curly hair. At times, I have had to go to other stylists at Red 7 and have not blinked an eye as all the stylists I have gone to seem trustworthy and well trained.  I love it here and have recommended it to others who have all had great experiences (and cuts!).

** UPDATE** I am sooo sad to report that my stylist Maya has moved out of state..not to be deterred by the news I will remain a Red7 customer because I am sure I will find another great stylist there!

**UPDATE** So happy to report that IVY is so super awesome at color!!

Minus one star 'cause it's pricey, and I like cheap stuff. But, you get what you pay for...they are intensely precise and awesome.

Jen was my stylist for a year or so, and I only quit this salon because I'm growing my hair out, and this place is addictive.

Oh my, where to start? The place is ecclectic, comfy and not overly pretentious or crazy mod or whatever the hell else all the upscale salons think makes them cooler than everyone else. They have very talented stylists, colorists, waxists (not a word) and other people that are generally cool.

IF the nail girls aren't busy...they will offer chair pedicures/manicures during your cut/color. What a bonus. (Or you can schedule it this way, I never think that far ahead). Also, sometimes the apprentices offer free hand massages, which I think put me into a coma. Pretty sure.

A great place, very professional, never disappointed, overall great experience...once I start makign some bank, I'll be back!

(right next to Merchandise Mart, parking is awful, right off Brown line)

I have only been to the Evanston location, but it is wonderful. Everyone is incredibly adorable and sweet. It is a small salon, but a fun, warm, and friendly environment. I have been in a few times to have my hair cut by Matt, and he is a doll. He listens to my needs, but still has some direction for what he sees for me and my hair. I think most importantly my hair grows out well from his cuts. I have had many stylists give cuts that grow into awkward stages, and after Matt, I have not gone through an awkward grown out stage. Also he is a styling genius. If you like big hair (think glamourous, not 80's), he will know what to do. He has done big volumous curls for both me and my friend, and we felt like barbie dolls. I always leave Matt feeling very pretty. Even if Evanston is not your preferred location, I suggest you give it a try for MATT- it will be worth it.

Prices are very good for the type of treatment you get, parking is easy (bring change for meters or park on side streets- just watch out for signs regarding permits), and if you use a credit card bring cash for tip because there is not a place for it on their receipts (or plan to run to the atm across the street)

I have to be honest - It took be 3 days to be able to write this review because I have been wanting to shave my head since my haircut here.  The salon is so cute, the people are really nice, but my god, the cute girl who cut my hair did not listen to what I asked for at all and I am now getting my hair cut again at another salon to fix what I can only describe as a throw back to the 80's style Eddie Van Halen cut (I will be honest, I have baby thin hair to begin with, but I know that and I told the stylist that I need to be able to have a professional polished look - yea, not so much).  When I expressed my upset about the bangs, the multiple fringe layers, and overall style, she told me "I just needed to get used to it."  Well, I have about 3 more days to get used to it before I get it fixed (I am still pissed that my hair is going to cost me $$$ between the two cuts, however.....)

I moved back to Chicago after spending six years in Indiana. I had a great stylist there who I loved. After a couple bad cuts in Chicago, I was tempted to drive the 5 hours to Indiana to see my stylist there once every 8 weeks.

Then I found Red 7. It is so adorable. The staff is so kind and welcoming. I am more beauty impaired than the average person, but I didn't feel stupid asking questions. They don't rush you out the door, but treat every client like they are the only client that day.

I highly recommend Jennifer. She made all those bad cuts seem like a bad dream. No need to drive to Indiana for a decent haircut. I can just take the Brown Line to the Mart!

This was a great salon.... you walk in and you immediately feel welcome. The people are so friendly and it feels like you are kind of in a home. It is nice when they wash your hair they give you a massage and don't rush it. Also, while you are getting a haircut, someone comes by and massages your hands. It is really relaxing! I would definitely recommend it!

Took my wife here last week, used a promotional coupon $35 off.

The place is cool, very nicely decorated and the magazine selection was really good (for a guy especially).

The staff was very friendly, gave me water every 20 minutes. I appreciate the water, however do they offer anything else? Coffee, tea, etc? (they would ask, would you like anything to drink?)

After the haircut and perm, my wife was not happy with the results. We mentioned it and after a short wait, they trimmed her some more.

Overall, good place. However, not sure if it was due to stylist or perhaps expectations, but my wife was not nearly as thrilled as the last haircut she got a few months ago. (in Korea)

It was a bit pricey, about $130 for cut, perm minus coupon.
However, I understand some people pay $200.

I'm working on it, I used to be a SUPERCUTS guy... now... I like HALO.

What can i say but wonderful things about this adorable, friendly salon.  My hair stylist was Fran, who was instantly personable and took a good amount of time investigating what my hair wants to do naturally.  She gave me a sassy cut with lots of easy layers and great shape.  That on top of a shampoo with scalp massage, hand massage and complimentary tea!   I was truly pampered and had a great experience here.  The hair stylist fees here run from $55 to $105 (mine was $85)--not super cheap.  That being said, this place knows what they are doing and is very professional.  Absolutely NO pressure was put on me to purchase any products, which is the way some less expensive places make their money.  I will definitely be back to see Fran--I am getting so many compliments on my new look!

I hate to be the only nay-sayer but I was not super impressed with my visit to Red 7.  The salon is super cute and really well decorated and people were very nice. I just didn't like my hair cut very much, I didn't get the stylist I asked for and she didn't take a lot of time asking me what I wanted. Plus the hand massage ended up making me more tense.  On top of all this, it was super pricey.  My cut did grow out well which was nice, I just didn't think it was worth the money.

This is such a wonderful boutique hair salon - eclectic in it's decor and stylists and incredible service and results.  They just opened a salon in Evanston on Dempster and I am sooooo excited!

I have been going to Red 7 Salon for 3 years for haircuts and highlights.  Jennifer is a wonderful stylist and does a fantastic job with my highlights.  The salon is adorable with a fireplace and couches as if you were in a living room.   Highly recommend this salon!

OK...so I have gone through 3 wedding hair trials to no avail.  I went today and spent time with Jamie who came highly recommended by a close friend familiar with the Salon.  I LOVED her demeanor, and she really took the time to listen to me.  I recommend going to a Salon for wedding hair since they have everything to accommodate your style.  She recommended I cut my hair so my up-do choice is easier to do, and I agreed.  She was great, and I even got a free hand massage, lemon water or soda, and crackers with cheez wizz (it was an 80's themed day, how cool) during my cut and style! What a nice touch.  I also hear they are opening a new store in Evanston soon for you Northsiders.  I regret that they have no manicurist yet, but are looking!

UPDATE: Just to add to my old review, Red 7 recently kept their salon open late for my boyfriend (he goes there as well) to get his haircut before flying out for a big job interview. They really have treated us well!
__________________________________________________ ____
Today was my first visit to Red 7 Salon, and I LOVED it. These are the reasons I would recommend this to my friends, family, coworkers, etc.:

- They were able to book my appointment quickly, and within my schedule. There's nothing more appealing than being able to get in when you want to.

-The location is great. It is right across from the Merchandise Mart, and is easy to find.

-The staff is incredibly friendly. Unlike other salons, where you sometimes feel like the stylist's time is more important than yours, Red 7 made sure I was taken care of from the second I walked in the door. There wasn't a moment where my timer was going off, indicating my color was finished, and I had to wait around wondering if I was forgotten. (My stylist was also very personable, as well as attentive).

-The salon itself has a great atmosphere, and the snacks, beverages and hand massage don't hurt. It was a nice escape on a lunch break.

-As for cost, their pricing is competitive with other salons in the area. You get your money's worth.

-Finally, I received the hair cut and color I was asking for. In fact, Jennifer not only listened to what I wanted, but was able to fix a previous bad haircut from another salon. I left feeling like I had finally come to the right place.

I was really impressed with the services that I got at Red 7 Salon.  I went to their website to get the introductory offer for a cut with Crystal.  When I walked in, they checked me in, and since it was my first time there, they showed me upstairs to the changing room (if you wanted to swap a robe for your clothes), and the sitting area, where I was offered a drink while I waited.  Crystal did an amazing job.  She took time to listen to what kind of cut I was looking for, how much time I spent on my hair on the daily, and discussed what would work best for my short, fine, wavy/curly hair.  The guy that washed my hair gave me a great massage, so great in fact, that I almost fell asleep in the chair!  Crystal got to work on my hair, and I got a hand massage in the middle of the cut, which was heavenly.  She talked me through different styling techniques, as well as suggested some hair products that would work best with my hair type.  My cut was fantastic and she did such a good job at styling it exactly the way that I always wish it looked!  I saw friends later that day, and they couldn't stop complimenting me on how good it looked.  Just from writing this review, it makes me think that I need to schedule my next appointment!
