The first and last great record store in Boise. I do everything I can to make the trip here to buy a cd rather than download. They do have quite a bit going for them- extensive used selection, lots of Indie Store Only releases- cool little toys and gizmos, great specials on new releases.

Last year when the new GNR came out, it was only sold at Best Buy. I was at the record exchange and they had a stack of them for sale at the same price that they had it for at Best Buy. I asked the manager what the deal was, and he said that they had gone to best buy, bought a bunch of them and were reselling them at the same price, simply because they knew they had customers that were interested and wanted to provide them with that product- and they weren't making a dime. Very cool of the RE.

The only reason I can't go 5 stars is- cds that aren't on sale are list price- usually $15.99-$18.99. Many of the used Cds are $9.99. I love the record exchange, and will continue to buy most of my music there. BUT- even though I feel pretty guilty, sometimes if the RE has a cd for $18.99, and I can download it from amazon for $8.99, well, you know.

Pretty decent medium size independent music store considering the Idaho market, they have new and used records, cds and i saw some tapes..  Pretty dope when you can find some independent hip hop used for $7.99, Giant Panda's latest.  Must also be a good plase for Boise State folk to get there music on.
They also have lots of music, movie, tv-related toys, books, clothing and other accessories.  So you could probably spend a good amount of time here.  Once you've checked out the store and hopefully picked up something, check out the little cafe they have in the store.  Looks like a perfect place to get a drink and chill after diggin in the crates.

While I'm a music lover and adore TRE.. This is about their coffee bar!
BEST price on a cup of coffee when you bring you own cup EVAR.  They only charge me A BUCK to fill my 20 ounce thermal mug.. which truly ROCKS.  The Edge coffee is a nice change from the corporate (S'bucks) and the mundane local (Moxie).    Cool people behind the bar, and a relaxed vibe in the place make it a must stop for java junkies!

Also.. tired of sickeningly sweet donuts in the office?  Try a bacon cheddar scone.. they are to die for!

Driving thru Boise on summer on my way to Olympia, WA - there were two things I was looking for:  A nice cold pint ( check ) and perhaps a record store ( check ).  Found both and was quite impressed with the record store.  Great selection, a good size, and loads of used CDs.  Worth a visit for anyone who appreciates music in general.
I bet Doug Martsch, members of State of Confusion/Treepeople or even Pushead bought LPs back in the day at this record store....

I'm a big supporter of independent record stores. And while it sucks that The Record Exchange is the only game in town for that, it's still a solid store that I'm happy to have around to fill my browsing needs. The selection is decent, the listening booths are plenty, and the adjacent coffee shop/knicknack store is a nice touch. The pricing reminds me of Amoeba Records-- stuff that isn't on sale is list price, and the pricing rationale of certain used CD's (especially older ones) make me scratch my head. But I do find that the trade-in value for CD's is some of the best I've ever come across, which helps cancel out my above gripes (and the chain options in town for new CD's sell at list price as well anyway). Plus they hold in-store concerts for local and traveling acts.

Good selection, friendly staff.  Prices, natch, a bit higher (as an independent business).  Selection can be a bit erratic, but usually pretty solid.

This IS the record store in Boise.  This is where you go if you want to buy music.  Everything else is going to be located at the mall.   They have been in business for a long time.  Decent selection.  This place was a destination when I was growing up and my musical tastes were in their tender, formative years.
