A great shop. It's not FYE, it's an independent store with dusty racks of used music, as well as new CDs. Posters from years ago line the walls. This shop feels like history and, as their Web site humorously states, they've been "Going Out of Business Since 1979."
After my local store, Laurie's Planet of Sound, decided to boycott the new Pumpkins album, I finally found it here and, unlike the LPoS clerk who almost pompously told me they decided not to stock the album, this fellow took time to explain why many stores are not carrying it (a distribution gripe). We talked for a bit, he's a really nice fellow.
The store is across from the L stop I get off at to go work out. I think I will now make it a point to frequent this place for most new releases. It will be a way to reward myself for getting my arse to the gym. :)
This record store has a special place in my heart. For starters, they are NOT "the man" - Record Emporium is owned and operated by one man, Mike Felten. They are a dying breed of wonderful old time record stores. You will sense a lot of love and heart here. Mike is a talented musician so he knows his stuff. He has classic old vinyl, new and used CDs, the coolest posters and t-shirts, and he also has in-store live performances. Go and support this local businessman and you will gain so much all the way around!

I just discovered this store about a month ago and I love it. Lots of new and used selection and great record selection (which seems to be rare lately).

"The last of the old time record stores" is their motto. Owner and operator Mike Felten is usually around to assist you and to chat a bit. A cool place to seek out classic old vinyl, buy a used or new CD,books,DVDs etc... The infamous back room where in-store performances were held is no sadly closed, but don't let that stop you from checking out the place that inspired the filmakers of "High Fidelity" to model the store in their film after this independent shop.
Great music plays as you browse along, when you notice something.. "what's this?, you ask yourself. "A couch??" Yes they have a big ole' comfy couch in the middle of the store, and a chair or two as well. Awesome indeed. They have records!! Yes, we need more places like this. They have mainstream and obscure music, I see no way this place could dissapoint someone.
This venerable record store will probably outlast all the Towers and Virgins. Not because it's flourishing, but because it just refuses to die. It's got some stiff competition with Hard Boiled, Evil Clown and Laurie's Planet of Sound nearby, but it's worth sniffing around in, as it'll have some good bargain, and you might hear something interesting playing in the store. They have a good selection of used books too.
