2 reviews for Record Baron
The "Record Baron" wants to shit on your chest. I cannot put it any other way. There is no other justification for the extraordinary prices he charges his customers. In nearly 20 years of buying LPs, i've never seen a record shop owner so eager to unleash an enormous bowel movement on his customers' chests.
Let me tell you what happened! Lots of things happened, really! On one occasion, "The Record Baron" chased me back into the store to make sure he charged me "enough tax" on my purchase. I took flight, of course, but could not escape.
It gets worse: the Baron will sometimes check the price on ebay before he sells you a record...and, what's more, he gets visibly perturbed if you leave w/o buying something (I had my reasons: maybe I put on the wrong slacks, maybe my boyfriend stole my wallet, maybe i had to save all my money to buy a high pressure hose to "wet down" my horse, etc).
Anyway, here's the best part about the Baron: he labels records "imports" that are clearly not imports, solely to jack up the price. Paula's donuts doesn't label their donuts as imports when they're not, so why does the Record Baron?
The OTHER best part about the Record Baron, when he's not shitting on people's chests (I admit that I am a fecal fiend), is seeing him at Antique World every Sunday buying dollar records to mark up at his store--which is all well and good, really--but hey, maybe "import" means imported from Clarence? Maybe that explains the extraordinary prices of all those Jewel, Styx and Constantine Sankathi records, eh? Boo! Boo! Booooooooo!
Well, I think the previous reviewer was a bit harsh. I think it is a bit too hasty to write the entire store off just because the owner is a bit of a pretentious penny-pincher (ha! alliteration!) when he is, after all, the owner of a record store. Anyone seen/read High Fidelity? Lord knows beggars can't be choosers, and good selections of records in decent shape are not exactly dime a dozen, especially in Buffalo. I've been to Record Baron a number of times, and the owner (I assume) was nothing but friendly, if a bit eager to tell stories. I'd rather pay a small markup to buy records I know are in playable shape than sift through hundreds of scratched-up albums in the hopes of finding one thing that I might be interested in, and hoping that it's in listenable condition. That being said, yes, Antique Man on Allen is also a good option for used records, but Record Baron seems to be more geared towards the audiophile niche (e.g. new releases, re-releases, EPs). The records I bought here were no higher than average prices, that I noticed, and he did not attempt to drop a deuce anywhere on or around my person.
