Reader's Corner is a great little used bookstore, and has tons of stuff dirt cheap.  I'm glad Eliza mentioned the smell.  I haven't been in there in years, but I still remember the way it smells: there's nothing like the smell of a rotting book to put you in the mood for reading.  I'm serious, it's one of the most homey and nostalgic smells I know of, and I think my first experience of it was in this store as a kid.

A great old Raleigh spot, and a good alternative if you can't find what you're looking for in Nice Price.

This is the used book store by which I judge all other used book stores. My Platonic Book Store. It is dirt cheap and if you're willing to read a ratty copy of a book, you can find almost everything.
I'm with Eric, it's super inexpensive but I have a hard time leaving without spending 20 bucks or so.
Tiny store, busting at the seems with books. The staff has virtually no turn over so you can get to know them over the years. The musty smell of once-loved books and found photos and letters makes this place one of a kind.  Good to support locally owned biz too.
Psst...Lemme let you in on a little secret, they do offer nice editions but they keep them in the bathroom.

The Reader's corner has been one of my favorite bookstores in the area for quite some time. The bookstore inside is pretty small but has a decent selection of books organized by genre. They have some music available as well as some used DVDs and reasonable prices.

What really sells the store to me is the books outside however. Reader's corner has these huge bookshelves outside where you can come by while the store is closed and pick up a book. The books are on the honor system, with each one costing $.25 (that you deposit in a slot in the door).

Great place to pick up some deals.

Even though you can buy books cheaper than anywhere else I've ever been, every time I walk in I have a hard time walking out without spending $30 or more. They've got such a wide selection of books and magazines, divided by genres. I've found classic paperbacks of books I loved from every genre at this store.

The store has its own unique, funky flavor. The bookcases are lined with various photos, letters and charts found in old books, and even looking at them can eat up hours of time. The employees are insanely smart, soft spoken and fun to talk to. One of them hosts a public access TV show in Raleigh called "Monkey Time" where he delivers rants about various political topics from municipal parking ordinances up to the war in Iraq. The strange thing is, despite all his strong opinions, he's obviously a well read guy and more than eager to help you out. I walked in with a question about glass one day (nothing related to used books) and he went out of his way to help me find out the answer.

I've got shelves and boxes full of little treasures I've scored from this store, from a vinyl edition of a Jawbreaker album to books of Hunter S. Thompson's correspondence. I even proudly wear my own Reader's Corner shirt (a bargain at $10) around town. I can't recommend it enough.

I first visited Reader's Corner way back in '93 when I first moved to Raleigh, and I've been a regular ever since; probably more so in the last few years as I've started collecting some vintage crime/SF/horror paperbacks. They seem to always have just what I'm looking for, like they're reading my mind! Weird. But great prices, knowledgeable & helpful staff, cool jazz playing on the stereo usually. Good DVD selection too. Some Saturdays you get the old cranks in there who love to pontificate loudly but I guess that's part of any used bookstore's charm.

Reader's Corner has always been my favorite used bookstore, partly because of it's quiet and comforting interior and partly because of the large supply of 10- and 25-cent books that they sell on the shelves outside the store.  All the proceeds go towards the local public radio station.  The selection is always varied and fairly decent.
