A charming source of engaging books ranging from the unusual and engaging to classic and timeless. It's the small bookstore that locals where swear by and support...and the offerings are so compelling! Fantastic for special orders and specific recommendations in a diverse range of topics.
Give yourself the time to camp out and really sift through the titles!
My friend and I were up in Sonoma on an impromptu wine tasting tour, and we wandered into Readers Books with some time to kill before dinner. An excellent choice!
This store is a browser's paradise. Warm and comfortable decor, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and some of the best-laid-out themed/subject tables I've seen in a while. Even in subjects I don't normally look at, like cooking and thriller and coffee table books, I was finding books I wanted to buy. I ended up with a stack so large, I had to set it down (on one of the many antique chairs they had sprinkled about) while I decided which books I would actually get.
I particularly appreciated their system of marking used books with a dot sticker on the spine--makes it easy to tell what you're looking at without always having to check the inside cover. I agree that they don't have everything, but they are eager to special order whatever you can't find. Also, as a bilingual teacher, I loved their well-stocked section of children's books in Spanish.
The only thing that marred the experience was a group of fellow travelers who had tasted enough wine to think that they were entitled to carry on a conversation across the entire store. However, I'm perfectly willing to write that off as a regional hazard! If you're in Sonoma, go check this place out!
Reader's Books.
Why, I remember coming through their door to buy my Bernstein Bears Books, special ordering Nancy Drew and back for cookbooks as I grew.
It's small - but well stocked and what they don't have, you know they will order it for you - no extra charge, no problem.
Open 7 days a week and run by nice Sonoma Folks.
Who doesn't love to support their local flavor?
What a perfect bookstore! Most of Sonoma Square is filled with gaudy trinkets and overpriced wine paraphernalia, but if you explore a little, you do eventually find some places of note.
You're not going to find a vast amazonian compendium but instead a carefully selected stache of novels, art, cooking & coffee table books, magazines, children's books and a very good biography section. Go ahead and browse, it's almost encouraged, but unfortunately there are no comfy sofas to plop down on. Well, maybe that's a good thing.
My favorite place to buy a book in Sonoma... it's huge, with a great selection of books on all kinds of topics and it's still family owned, which I think is really special. Best part is the massive used selection. I've left this place with like 5 books for less than $30 at times. The people who work there are so friendly and knowledgeable about what they have in the store and what is or might be coming. They have great in store sessions with authors and poets. I never seem to be able to get out of this place empty handed so they're definitely doing something right!
Smallish bookstore, and a little pricey, but it's the kind of bookstore that is inviting to all readers. The magazine selection isn't great, but it's there and they have a few titles that you rarely see in bookstores.
I was impressed that the stuff they have tended towards the serious reader-type and not the typical stuff that is brought out to the average browser. The staff is helpful and nice. I found myself in a long conversation with one of the women who works there that led to several book purchases.
Readers' Books is one of my favorite stops in Sonoma.
Three generations of my family shop at Readers' Books and we all are able to locate books we enjoy!
In addition, I enjoy the guest author series they host.
Readers' Books really supports our community and I am glad to have them be part of our community.
Thanks,
Sheana
Readers books is owned by the folks of a kid from my elementary school. I miss the days when readers was on both sides of the street. I actually liked the other space better, with it's dark wood floors and little nooks you could cram yourself into while you read a book to see if it was worth taking home. Now it is open and airy and there's no little nooks, it's still the best place in town to buy a book.
Tracy D pretty much summed it up.
Great place that has introduced me to many wonderful books.
This is the most exciting store in the plaza! A real bookstore with a great selection!
Great selection of books, with staff picks emphasized. It looks small from the outside but has excellent browsing potential-- also it's right off the square, a perfect diversion while waiting for your table.
