6 reviews for Ray's Barber Shop
Great barber shop with a shave & a haircut for two bits - scratch that - $23.
I keep going back and have yet to be disappointed.
No, I don't think so.
The barber's electric clippers hadn't been sharpened for some time, producing a red rash on the back of my neck; if this is what is meant by "old school," count me out.
Another poster commented that the barber asked him what he wanted, but didn't listen to his request; in my case, this was because the barber didn't speak much English.
I wish the experience had been better--and had it it been just a bit better, I would have given them another chance. But as things stand now, I'm afraid I can't.
Just got a cut there to see what its all about. I live in the Heights so I only had to ride the train for a couple of stops to get there. It was worth the ride and sitting there talking with Ray made me wish the haircut took longer. The very essence of barbershops.
It took me 7 years of living in New York to find the kind of classic men's barber shop I grew up with. Ray's is the place. And no kidding, Ray knows all the info on his regulars and the neighborhood. An institutional treasure.
Ray's is a WYSIWYG kind of place: an old-school barber shop where manly men are groomed by equally manly men - while discussing sports, of course. This Inwood shop has been around forever. You tell Ray what building you live in and he can tell you who your landlord is.
I've been burned (literally) by cheapo chain shops before, and had my doubts about what to expect from a $12 haircut. And I was especially concerned because my barber (not Ray) was 70 if he was a day. But damn if I didn't walk out of there with one of the best cuts I've had in years, and with minimal instruction to the barber. Plus there was no wait when I walked in, so I was done in no time.
For a no-frills, no BS cut in the Inwood area, head to Ray's.
P.S.: Visit their web site before you go: there's a $7 coupon for first time customers.
Great guys. No frills. An inexpensive haircut at $13. They did a great job too.
