One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
After previously reviewing Rare in SoHo, I checked out this location. The bad music was absent. This time I tried a filet mignon burger, and needless to say, it just might be the best burger you can eat on the planet. Excellent service too. You really have to check it out for yourself.
It's Black Friday. Tourists all about Times Square and Grand Central. But on 37th Street and Lexington, not a creature was stirring. Not even a mouse. Well, except for me and my Super Mario Bros partner, for we were craving burgers, baby, burgers. And one of the places that I had been dying to try for at least three days was Rare Bar & Grill.
I ordered the M&M burger, which consisted of apple smoked bacon, shallots, lettuce, lots of cheese and nice beefy burger, cooked medium rare for that juicy goodness. My oh my, was it a tasty burger. My only criticism was the bun. Because the burger was so juicy, the bun was pretty much a crumbling mess by the time I was down to my last two or three bites. Thus, the elimination of one star.
We also got an order of the horseshoe string fries, and they were really good too. They are my second fave type of fries, behind the immortal waffle fries that I can never find anywhere in Manhattan.
Well, if you like burgers give them a try sometime. I can't usually get them myself because my girlfriend's a vegetarian which pretty much makes me a vegetarian. But I do love the taste of a good burger. Mm-mm-mm.
Big fan of the fries sampler, but I'm a sucker for a variety of dipping sauces. In fact, that's my most vivid memory of this place... I do remember the burger being pretty tasty as well.
Slightly pricey, but larger than average portions and the price itself is not out of whack in terms of upscale midtown burger joints.
Wanted to reminisce with a couple of buddies as we went when it opened a couple of years ago. Granted it was quality meat grilled to perfection and similar in size as those at JH. However your almost paying $20 bucks for a cheeseburger - wtf and it's not even Kobe.
Pros quality meat good service
Cons indulgent and not a value proposition almost $40 with drinks for a burger, yikes - never again unless on an expense account. Makes you feel awkward without your pinstripes and suspenders.
Heh aren't those Gordon Gecko days over - i thought Oliver Stone is coming out with a new movie about the fall of the over indulgent, guess NY is not always ahead of the times.
One of the best burgers I have ever had. I had the ribeye burger cooked bloody rare with truffle butter. It was outrageous and cooked actually RARE which nobody ever delivers on much anymore these days. Tried the french fry basket and onion rings which are also delicious. The best were the sweet potato fries with the honey maple dipping sauce and the waffle fries. The dessert menu sounded outrageous and I heard they do fried oreos which are great but we were too stuffed to try them. Go here if you want a great burger with some inventive fries and dippies.
This is the first meal that my family and I had together here in New York, and it was damn amazing.
I have to admit the only reason we knew about it was because we stayed at the Affinia Shelburne. So maybe their publicity needs a bit of work, but the food speaks for itself.
I had the flet mignon burger with brie cheese, and somehow was able to finish it with ease. I'm a petite person, so finishing a burger is not an everday accomplishment for me. But everything was cooked just the way I was hoping it would be, and it settled in my stomach quite nicely.
Since we were going all out that night, we shared some deep fried oreos amongst the four of us, which to our surprise, were tres wonderful. You wouldn't expect it, but the mash of fried and cookie worked out to perfection. I'm never too proud to admit I've eaten it, but my stomach knows how it felt.
That being said, I had a food high for at least the next hour afterwards.
Only con: If you're not a single, or look young and ready to schmooze, they'll place you in the backroom. Since it was my parents, 8 year old sister and I, we obviously didn't fit into the hip, trendy, and mingling atmosphere of the main room. Competely understandable though, and as long as they continue to serve me good food, I have no problem with it.
THE best hamburger I have ever eaten. Also the most expensive burger I have ever eaten, but it's made with a real steak, not just ground beef. The T-Bone is unbelievable. I've been here a few times, I also tried the tri-slider sampler, which was interesting, I can't remember what the 3 burgers were now. The fries sampler is huge but tasty, and comes with interesting sauces like chipotle aioli. But just come here and get one of the steak burgers.
When we're feeling particularly fat and carnivorous, the boyfriend and I will go to Rare. The amount of food is borderline ridiculous, but the burgers are really good and inventive and the staff is very nice.
Though tasty, the burgers are actually so big and so dripping with sauce and what-have-you that it's actually kind of frustrating to eat. I don't want to be that girl, eating my burger with a fork and knife, but I also don't care to have meat juice dripping down my chin, as "hot" as Paris and Padma make it look in those brilliant Carl's Jr. commercials.
The rooftop bar has a nice view, but I have never been impressed by the drinks or the staff up there. I'm sorry, but I don't like drinking a glass of wine out of plastic. I once had to send a glass (er, plastic) back because it tasted really watered down. Weird.
Overall, the place seems a little touristy, but it's worth a try if you're a burger connoisseur.
These are gourmet burgers compared to Shake Shack and Burger Joint.
I got the Rare Classic with several of their toppings like mushrooms and carmelized onions. It was pretty big and with the fries I was overloaded.
I got the fries with the Chipotle Aioli- so yumm!! It comes to about $25 for the burger and fries, add a few beers and you are spending quite a bit on just a burger.
It's a really good splurge burger!
A very tasty burger, and great fries. If you go, you have to get the fries sampler. The best sweet potato fries, maybe. I usually just get the regular burger, due to allergies and all, but everyone I've gone with in the past has also raved about the different burger options.
I was in NYC for work and was told to try out this place near our hotel. I wasn't even in the mood for a burger... but then... WHAM.
Mexican burger? Pesto? Carmelized onions? Sweet potato french fries? I immediately was now in the mood for burgers. If you are like me, and begin to salvate at everything on the menu, go for the three sliders from the chef. Apparently they rotate and can vary -- but mine were ridiculous juicy, fresh and plentiful.
May I also suggest the fries? They brought us three varities of fries; sweet, permesean and criss-cut (um, like the ones from Carl's Jr.) and various dipping sauces.
The staff was friendly, the ambience wasn't radiant, but pa-lease, it's a burger heaven -- I didn't even notice the Pamela Anderson-like barbed wire wall decor stickers.
Like Cow?
I do. And I really enjoyed my classic burger at Rare. It was cooked perfectly, and my sweet potato fries were great (wish they were a bit thicker). My buddy had a bison burger, which he also said was cooked perfectly.
My only complaint? Get some draft beers! I was dissapointed to see only bottles available (which wasn't a shabby selection, I had a Pilsner Urquell).
Next time I'll be trying the rib-eye burger. That just sounds way too enticing....
Well portioned quality burgers. Awesome sweet Potato fries. Got the Rare Classic medium rare and was cooked very well. No sides are included with the burger but I would def. go back!
I feel cheap. I feel dirty. I feel I've been slipped a couple of roofies by the dodgy middle-aged medallion-wearing patrons of this rooftop. Why oh why am I clicking on 4 stars?
Plastic cups. Tinny trashy euro pseudo-house emanating from speakers around the place. Mouthfuls of perfume you can chew on from every direction. Complete lack of awareness of the 'show only one of chest, midriff or legs at once' rule (respect Keisha E).
And yet, and yet... When the sun is setting and you're taking in the stunning views of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, your $10 plastic cup of Blue Moon in hand, it all begins to make sense.
Yep, I like it, and yep, I'll be back.
Busy for dinner on the weekends. Good burgers and fries. Great rooftop deck.
As was mentioned in the other yelp reviews, the burgers were delicious. I hung out for a couple of hours on their roof deck. They're drinks are pretty generous as I got a bit tipsy from having 2 tall drinks. I then came downstairs for the burgers, fries and cole slaw. Delicious!
The cole slaws are freshly made and not that cheap stuff you get at diners. It's seasoned and tasty. The burgers were cooked to perfection and I love all the dips that came with the fries. I'm going back for more burgers.
I, for some reason or another, really don't like the neighborhood of Murray Hill.
It reminds me of the suburbs I think - it's too clean and too uppity(and boring).
Also, I know New York is expensive, I fucking know. I grew up in the damn area. When I'm in Murray Hill that fact is spit in my face.
All that aside:
Rare does make a mean burger. It's delicious. I got the classic one w/out fries and I was completely satisfied.
The bartender was a good guy and the overall experience was excellent.
The classic burger is $9 which is cheaper than the one at DuMont. However after that they jump to $15+ and the cheapest beer is $7.
This is definitely a good spot but alas a lack it's in motherfucking Murray Hill...because of this I just can't bring myself to give this place a 4th star. I just can't.
This is mostly a review of the Rare View, the rooftop bar at the Shelburne Hotel. The restaurant is on the ground floor and I've eaten there before, it's quite good actually. I've also been at the Shelburne, and it is not so good. Alas, I digress.
Venue:
"I've been up here before," was the first thing I said to myself. It took me a minute to realize as the entire Shelburne is under renovations and the rooftop bar looks, well, a little cheesier than ever before. There's random music play, with a beach vibe. Don't look at the pictures, it makes this place seem classy, but it's not really. Flip-flops are A-OK whilst lounging on random mattresses that don't seem to have been cleaned in a while.
It was a girls' night, and the ringleader (Meredith) had said "sophisticated cocktail attire," so we must have been at the wrong place, right? Right. It was like a scene from Sex and the City. Me (Carrie) had gotten there right on time with my tall, skinny, outrageous model friend (Cherise) just back from Las Vegas, just back from LA. She and I simply looked at each other, knowing that Meredith (Charlotte) couldn't have meant this place. But as we had to wait on our Aussie friend Naomi (Miranda) we couldn't go anywhere. We were forced to sit, and wait, and drink, out of plastic glasses and munch on bar mix out of clear Dixie cup. Suffice it to say there was no clinking at cheers time.
Drinks were interesting and tasty, but not cheap. The view's okay, and since it's the only rooftop bar that allows for lounging before the huge rush of Murray Hillites to take over and make it all go to yuppie-dom, it's worth a visit or two. Just don't go in with expectation that this is the high society roof garden party of the year, because I assure, it's more backyard BBQ than debutante extravaganza.
Food:
Rare is downstairs, and I'm assuming maybe they'll serve you food on the roof too?? Don't quote me on that. Rare's not a bad get for burgers and comfort food though. If it were just the restaurant I'd give a 3, maybe a 3.5 even. Update for the restaurant and it's food may come later. But let me tell you, you're better off at the dark bark downstairs than wasting time up top.
Definitely one of my more favorite roof top bars. Never crowded, and always populated with very cool people. I have met alot of very interesting people here, both locals and visitors.
Drinks are not crazy expensive (as roof-top bars in NYC go anyway). The view is great at night. I do wish they were open later than 11 though.
In a nutshell, Rare makes a mean burger!
Although I don't consider myself a meat lover, I do sometimes have to satisfy my love jones for a juicy, tasty hamburger -- and Rare has never disappointed. Here it's all about the burger -- yes, the bun can be on the small side, the beer battered onion rings extra greasy or the fries can sometimes turn out limp -- but the burger alone gets four stars!
If a bacon burger is your thing, opt for the crispy bacon rather than the double-smoked thick cut (save that for a steak house experience) - there's something magical about biting into crisp, charred bacon along with the thick, juicy, flavor of prime ground beef....

This review is for the people who find themselves eating dinner alone in New York. I picked Rare cuz I'm always down for a good burger and it's near the place where I'm working. But I had no idea how much of a scene it is on a random Wednesday evening. Hostesses in little black dresses and quite a crowd to push through. Being the loner dork I am, I sat myself at the end of the bar, pulled out my laptop and work papers, and started working amid a happening bar scene. The four stars is mostly for the great woman tending bar who let me take up all that space while nursing a burger, even though it was so crowded, without any indication that she was annoyed by me, no snarky comments or anything, and really mindful about not spilling stuff on my papers.
The cheddar cheeseburger was okay, but not spectacular. Needed ketchup, which isn't a great sign. I was really disappointed by the fries. I got a side of parmesan truffle fries, but they were kinda cold and bland. Not that I didn't finish off the bowl.
Maybe next time I'll actually talk to someone while I'm there.
Have I mentioned that I like fries? I'll say all kinds, cause I'm not particular about shape or size, but I do have strong opinions about texture and taste.
Rare is known for its burgers, which could have been assumed by its name alone, but I think it should also be recognized for the fries. We ordered a basket and not only did it include three types of fries (shoestring, sweet potato, and something else yummy), but it came with five dipping sauces. I like my condiments too, so this is unbeatable - I was in heaven.
Furthermore, the burgers were great. My medium ended up being more rare, but was still delectable; in retrospect I shouldn't have been surprised. They spice up your average burger with things like carmelized onion, pesto, bourbon, whiskey and fried eggs. The even have bison burgers and weekly burger specials. Check it out.
No happy hour - FYI.
Very good lunch place. Great selection of Burgers. We dined at prime time lunch, so it took a few minutes longer to get a table and to get served.
Deep Fried Pickles were very good.
Would definitely go back.
I only came here for a drink but I LOVE the rooftop. Let me set the scene. It's after a long day at work on a Monday and you received some bad news the prior day. You meet up with an old friend for a drink. From your seat, you can see the top of the empire state building and other illuminated building tops with bulb-y strings of lights. I've lived in NY all my life but there are still times when I can appreciate this place. The plus was that it wasn't crowded. Almost empty. I don't like crowded places, so this was heaven for me. I tried the $12 white sangria (a little expensive) but it was good. Sweet and tasty. Like juice. I didn't taste much alcohol but I didn't mind on this particular day. Overall, the drink menu is overpriced. $9 beers. $15 martinis. As long as it's empty, I'll be coming back.
My boyfriend was in town and this was perfect. We got there at 8 on a Sunday and it was full but not packed. The hostess and manager were extremely accommodating and apologized for the wait even though we clearly did not care. They also handled a really awkward situation with a senile elder man very well and professionally.
We waited about 10 minutes which was perfect because they had the NBA playoffs on and they buzzed us just as it ended. The waiter even asked us for the score. When he sat us he cracked a joke about this being the VIP table and how Diddy sits there. True or not, I thought it was cute.
Sweet potato fries are a fave of mine and although they aren't the best I have had, they are super sweet with just enough salt but what really puts these over the top, and makes it not even a question that I would order them every time, is the maple syrup sauce it is recommended to be paired with. This sauce is INCREDIBLE!
Boy ordered a bison burger with Swiss that he said was one of the best burgers he has ever had. I had the portobello caps with sauteed spinach and just enough garlic and a dollop of goat cheese. I didn't even touch the side salad it came with cuz I was so full. It was a wonderful alternative to a burger.
We were both really pleased. This being my second time and still loving it and his first and said it was his favorite place we went to all weekend to eat.
The T-bone burger is delicious... my second favorite is the M&M burger with caramelized shallots and applewood bacon. I also liked the buns and all the fixings.
The only con is that these burgers are expensive. Charging $15-$21 dollars a burger is a little too much. I would prefer it if it was closer to $10-$12. However, you pay $40 for a good steak at any steakhouse for a $20 piece of steak anyway, so it's the same thing here.
I would definitely go back to this place.
Excellent steak burger, nice staff. The basket of fries comes with 4 sauces and it is amazing. Good for four.
I went to Rare for my birthday dinner last night. Rare boasts to have the best burgers and for the most part, they did. But everything else was mediocre.
It was quite busy for a Wednesday night. The setting was cute but we were seated next to a noisy group of over 40 suits which was not very pleasant. The waiter was attentive at first but got easily distracted once the tables started filling up.
Appetizers-
The lollipop wings were a rip off. They literally took half the meat off the bone to make it look like a chicken lollipop. The spinach dip was good. And the cottage fries and sweet potato fries were good too. Oh ps- the chipotle dipping sauce---- DELICIOUS
Entree-
I had the t-bone burger. It was... OK. Yeah, that's it. A 21 dollar burger was OK. However, I took a bite of the 26 dollar filet mignon burger & it was soooo good. It was really juicy and it melted right on my tongue. Was it worth the $26? Maybe not. But jeeeeeez, that's A BURGER.
Dessert was yummyyyyy! The waffle ice cream burger.... man, I added an inch or two on my thighs for that.
Rare was OK, overall but they probably shouldn't gloat so much.
Great booming place with great burgers!
Once again facing my fear of eating a burger (calories, etc.), I gladly overcame it for the night at this modern burger place. Yes, for that one night I ate that burger and enjoyed it lol. Seriously, it was a great burger, and not just because I have been deprived, it was just perfect, juicy, and tasty! It was huge and I was full after 3 bites, but I still finished the whole thing, cuz it was that good. My friend had the bison burger and loved it as well...
-1 was for the fact that we didnt get any fries or sides included with the burger... we had to order the fries seperately - but they were good too.
After reading the reviews from other Yelpers I expected to be "wowed" by the food. Perhaps it would be served on silver trays and trumpets would herald the creation of a masterpiece of meat.
I like that phrase, "masterpiece of meat" so much that I may have to trademark it.
Or license it out to steakhouses, and burger joints all across the country.
The cheeseburger I ordered was small, about the size of my palm. I thought it was a kids meal for a second and I did a double take.
You're kidding, right?
This is a burger?
It did come with two gigantic pickles that they probably used to subsidize the "small" but well appointed burger. So it came with onions, one tomato, and one piece of lettuce.
Big wow.
I ate at the bar and the bartender was more interested in flirting with the guido looking Jersey boy sitting to my left than helping me out.
The shoestring fries weren't bad, although it did take her about 10 minutes to finally bring me the side of ranch that I wanted.
Yes, I know, the 'roided out Jersey boy in his Abercrombie & Fitch gear is sitting alone and you needed to flirt with him, because god knows the last time you were laid was probably back during one of our ice ages.
But please, please, do your fr*cking job. Is it too much to ask you to check on me? Did you realize that my burger came and I didn't have any silverware? Did you also notice that I had to ask you for napkins? WTF??
You blondie, behind the bar, with the glasses, wearing all black, on Sunday evening around 7:30 PM on 11/16/08 were for lack of a better word, INCOMPETENT. Yes, you were. Shut up.
I don't want to hear any excuses. You s*ck.
Big time!
If there was an award for lazy bartenders, why you'd be nominated by me in a heartbeat. And it wasn't like you were busy. Seriously, you spent every minute that I was there cozying up to the A&F boy.
Shame on you!
I wanted to eat, not hear you giggle, flirt, and incessantly remind him, "I'll be here." You dork.
If you want to get laid, give him your number, have him pick you up after your shift and bang you in the back of his 1996 BMW that he got as a hand me down from pops.
I had half a mind to complain to your manager but I was hungry and I wanted to eat, and get the hell out of there.
I so wish you were nicer to me. I so wanted to give Rare more than 2 stars but geez, lady, you're a pathetic excuse for a bartender.
Oh yeah, by the way, all the black you were wearing still made you look fat. I said it. Sue me.
Mellow vibe
good Parmesean Truffle fries- for $6. Yum
The burgers and fries were great, the prices were reasonable and there were a few hiccups in service. My bourbon was served in a dirty glass and my sprite went from full to half full to gone. I asked the waitress where it went and she replaced it. It went from full to 1/4 and then gone AGAIN.
Besides the beverage kidnapping, everything else was terrific.
Damn, I loved this place. I started with a delicious, spicy, house-made bloody mary and things just got better from there.
Center stage at Rare are the burgers. They're gigantic. Gigantic, and amazing. Gigantically amazing. As soon as you walk in and smell the burgers, you'll know what I mean. Then you see them, well...all of the toppings are quality as well, which explains why they need about four inches of vertical burger height to fit in all of the fixins, no kidding! There is however, an inherent structural problem of a burger of this size. In my opinion, the act of consuming a burger this size can be remedied by simply using a fork and knife or my preferred method of giving in to reckless abandon and ploping the two halves of the burger together and leaving modesty in the rear-view mirror.
Everything else was of equally high quality as well. I loved the parmesan-truffle fries and the delectable side salad. The paresan fries were so good, I didn't dare dip them in ketchup (and just like any other burger-loving American, I love me some ketchup). The service was attentive, friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu.
If you're serious about your burgers (and even if you're not) I would make a point to try Rare. I mean come on, if you're going to pay almost as much for a frozen burger in some crap bar anyway, just come here. You won't regret it.
The T-bone burger (served medium) is the best burger that's ever had the privilege of entering my mouth (Second best is Father's Office in Los Angeles). Yes it's expensive, and yes it's worth it. The fried are great too. I prefer the criss cut fries.
Go here, order the T-bone burger, and cherish the memory for the rest of your life.
I had an auction date with the great Michael F., so I says to him, "Pick out a burger place you've never been to and we'll go." He picked this joint, inside or adjacent or whathaveyou to a hotel and therefore blessed with a clientele of tourist families unaware that you can get a cheaper and better brunch somewhere else if you dare to get on the subway.
The setting is OK, with seventies "Yacht Rock" playing and waaay too much AC. I should have dressed for it. I join the others in warning you: bring a sweater, hoodie, shawl, a hat, mittens, and whatnot. The dark wood panelly thing never appealed to me, and this place looks a bit like Cheers, only there's very obviously no Sam, Normie, Cliff, Carla, et. al., and the waitstaff don't lend any life to the place either. They are nice enough, but this is your typical hotel restaurant. Nothing more than that.
First of all, the drinks were tasty. My drink, a mojito, I think, was served in a very tall glass, which was great considering it was friggin 12 bucks.
I like my burgers medium rare. MEDIUM rare. I think only a handful of people in the world like their burgers this way. Rare lives up to its name. The burger was cooked on the outside and just a taaaaaaaaaad above raw on the inside. And I kinda, um, liked it. It was messy but quite good. However, the fries are not included on the plate with the burger, so any cheese oozing off the burger doesn't get on them. Boooooooo. There are several toppings offered and several arrangements of burgers, and I'll try them if I'm in the neighborhood. The Kobe beef omelet with caramelized onions calls to me. But Rare is unfortunately not a place I would go out of my way to have.
3.5 stars
Burgers piled high that are nearly impossible to eat along with fries accompanied by every tipping sauce imaginable. An atmosphere that is rather upscale and decent beer selections. This is "Rare". Sounds good? Well, for the most part it is decent but not deserving of more than 3 stars.
Going here with a large party seems to be difficult as the place is rather small and they messed up on the number of chairs. We finally crammed in and the waiter did a decent job of taking everyone's orders. I ordered the chili and although the presentation was decent, it didn't taste as good as it looked. The same can be said for the burger. Wow, was it greasy... and expensive.
At the end of the night the waiter seemed to get tired and his service deteriorated rapidly. The fry baskets were OK, but hey should really include fries with the burgers. Overall, the bar is too small and can't fit enough people as are waiting for tables, the burgers are like the buildings outside: too high and narrow, and the fries were rather bland. I did kind of like the meal, because I love burgers but I didn't like the place, service or price (although it's too be expected in NYC).
Some of the best burgers I have ever had-- juicy, perfectly cooked, and interestingly topped. Be sure to order the delicious sweet potato fries.
On the down side, the restaurant is pretty dark, crowded, and pricey.
I'll admit its a tad bit over-priced for a burger... but MMMMMM they're soooooooo delicious! And with their "recession lunch special" right now on weekdays, it makes this guilty pleasure a lil' less guilty and a tad more pleasure ;)
Very juicy, delicious burgers, love at first bite!
YOU GO FOR THE VIEW. And that's it.
I went there Thursday night, around 7pm and figured I'd stop in for a quick drink. Only problem is, you have to go through 2 lines to even get in. With only one elevator, there can be a bit of a wait even at 7pm, depending on how many people are there. And then we go inside to another cramped, uncomfortably warm line. At first I thought I got in the line to see the Statue of Liberty by accident.
Once you get up there, you have officially entered Yuppie Republic. After walking around, I learned a lot about 401Ks from bits and pieces of conversation The view is almost as refreshing as the chill air you're gasping for after riding up the elevator for ten or so floors.
So about that quick drink. My thirst quickly disappeared when I got to the overcrowded line with one active bartender and a group of girls in front of me asking for mojitos. MOJITOS?! Are you kidding? Do you realize how long that takes? Maybe it just wasn't my night.
And then I saw it was 9 bucks for a small cup of beer. I promptly exited the spot. One last thing, if you have intentions of popping back in later in the night like I did, they close the line at 11:30pm, so it's a no-go. Have a back-up plan.
Nice looking place for a burger but they definitely charge you for it. Approximately $15 for just a burger is a little much for this. The selection of fries is nice though.
