Great place - ambiance, food, service - all superb and on par.

The ambiance has a lot of cool tones, and neat decorations (lit star patterns within the bar countertop, a random lit sign that says Watch Repairs). The service is attentive, fast, but not intrusive.

The food was great - I ordered the split pea and pancetta soup, which was thick, hearty, and full of rich flavor. The soup was so thick it was like spooning up oatmeal with chunks of raisin (cept it's pea soup with chunks of pancetta).

I ordered the pan seared grouper, which came with a white bean puree, mushrooms, and a lightly tangy sauce. The grouper was prepared fabulously - soft melty insides, seared and crispy outsides. Yum!!

It's rare for me to give 5 STARS but every once upon a time everything is clicking for a restaurant.

Went to dinner here the other night and we walked in and was greeted with warm familiarity, while our table was ready, we chose to grab a cocktail at the bar and were treated to an amazing special with muddled pears, 209 gin and lemon juice it was both refreshing and the muddled pear made the drink something I've not enjoyed before.

We sat down, greeted by friendly wait staff, took our time to order, the menu is amazing. My date ordered the salad and halibut for her main course. I normally have the roast pork shoulder rubbed in coffee but the waiter suggested I try the duck breast with the wild mushroom cannelloni and started with the scallops -- lets just say it was all amazing.

The wine list has really improved to match the talent coming from the kitchen. We ordered a great bottle of Pinot (that is hard to find) and just enjoyed it with the meal.

As we walked out we were thanked and felt as we were leaving Mom's house.

Like I said, it all worked, greeters, bartenders, wait staff, food, wine and welcoming environment.  I'll be back often!

Range remains my favorite restaurant in San Francisco.  Why?  Quite simply the food is outstanding and for a place that offers such quality the price is quite modest.

This last visit I started a wonderful meal with a salad of little gems with fried capers and parmesan cheese.  A simple plate of absolutely fresh, pristine lettuce.  Not overdressed but rather complemented by the capers and cheese.

Every once in a while you trip over some plate of food that is truly memorable.  That will come back to you.  That speaks to you.  For me that plate was pan roasted grouper that came with cipollini onions, broccoli di ciccio and a puree of white beans.  Perfection.

To finish a simple plate of belgian gouda cheese accompanied by bahri dates.

In a city with so many great places, I sometimes forget how wonderful Range is.   A visit is all it takes to ignite my affair with place place anew.  If you haven't visited Range you really should.

Came here for the Food for Thought event on November 11th.  Had an incredible meal, with outstanding service.  Was served at the bar by Ken, who was attentive but not intrusive.  The cocktail of the evening was a terrific mix of gin, thyme, pear and some other stuff called The Oberon (an homage to Midsummers Night).  Then split a couple appetizers with my partner.  The gem salad had a light dressing I liked and the sqaush ravoli w/feta (weird sounding) was divine -- an inspired combo.  Ken also brought the ocean trout dish with kimchi (another weird sounding combo) that blew my mind.  At this point, I'm in heaven.  The place is jammed with happy eaters and we're perched at the corner of the bar with a perfect outlook.

For the main course, I had the duck with a mushroom stuffed canaloni.  I was hesitant when it was placed in front of me because it lacked color variations and I'm typically not a fan of monochrome food, especially off white.  But my excitement changed completely with my first bite.  Another homerun combo IMHO.  My partner had the coffee rubbed pork shouler, which was exquisitely presented.  Just beautiful.  I had entree envy immediately.  But that faded, as I thought the pork, while flavorful, was a bit dry and paled in comparison to my duck.

We split the bitter chocolate souffle for dessert and Ken suggested we add a baby scoop of cardamon ice cream (still not sure what cardamon is -- it always makes me think of Cartman from South Park).  Great presentation and the combo really worked.

Once I fill up my dining budget jar, we'll be back.  It was truly a wonderful experience from start to finish.  Ken at the bar made a delicatable meal into an exceptional all-round evening.

And yet another ridiculously delish meal in SF! And everyone wonders why I feel the need to hit the gym every morning? However, my meal at Range was well worth the extra time on the treadmill the next morning.

There was so much yummy looking entrees to choose from so my 2 dining companions and I opted to split a few things:
* wild arugula salad (the apples and bacon worked well together)
* halibut in a delicious broth with lots of my favorite seafood (calamari, shrimp, etc)
* roasted chicken (i usually don't order chicken, but chicken doesn't usually taste this good)
* bread pudding (yes, bread pudding as an entree. And my favorite entree of the evening)

And for dessert:
* ice cream puffs filled with raspberry ice cream (eh, could pass next time)
* butterscotch pudding (everyone agreed this was the unexpected winner)
* crepes (tasty as well).

I was happy to get a little taste of everything, but if I didn't have my fabulous dining companions with me next time I'd order the bread pudding as my entree followed by the butterscotch pudding.  Can't go wrong with that...or pretty much anything else on the menu.

Came here the night of Food for Thought on Wed November 11th and wow. What an amazing experience.

My partner and I shared our plates and started with:

little gem lettuce w/walnuts- very good
butternut squash stuffed pasta- to-die-for

then:
duck breast- omg- freaking amazing
pork shoulder- delish

finished w/ souffle (w/Ken's reccomendation) of ice cream on side- wow. so good
and then they brought out crepes- i died. well, i could have at the moment and been very happy. outrageously good.

was more of a cocktail night than wine thanks to Ken- he was absolutely amazing! met his gf.. who sat next to us.. and she was great too! the special cocktail for the evening was damn good.. and the chili-tequila drink-wow.

Service- A+++ (Ken was fabulous!)
Food was amazing
Ambiance was GREAT- up beat!

Can't wait to go back!!

So I kind of have a gripe... I made a reservation via Open Table - in fact, I even had to secure it with a credit card... 2 days before my reservation, I receive another confirmation email reminding me of my reservation. The day of my reservation, I log onto the Open Table website and confirm that everything is good to go....

And yeah... you guessed it... I get there and they don't have my reservation. While I don't know whether I should blame Open Table or Range, I felt the hostess did an absolutely horrible job at handling the situation. While we were still able to get seated immediately, she made me feel as if I had made a mistake and had to somehow prove that I had indeed made the reservation (which is why I had offered to show her the reservation email on my phone). She went on to say something along the lines of "Luckily someone cancelled otherwise..." Otherwise what? Otherwise I'd be fucking pissed! I really felt that they should have apologized instead of making me feel as if I should have been thankful. (This goes even if I was really at fault... because frankly, if you're running a solid establishment, the customer should always be right.)

And so we got our table. Rib appetizer was to die for. Lamb sirloin was mediocre. Coffee roasted pork shoulder was good, but not as good as I remembered it.

I appreciated my server though. Attentive and friendly.

I ate at Range this past Tuesday night and wow! it was great. Reservations are a must. It was packed for a Tuesday night and they were very kind in holding our table because we were 20 minutes late due to traffic and city parking. (But we called which is the polite thing to do.)
We shared the scallop dish with cucumbers and mint and also the raw trout with kamishi. Both very good flavors. Our entrees were the braised beef and the grouper. The beef was nicely seasoned. The grouper was cooked beautifully but the spinach was salty. We finished with the pumpkin turnovers which were ok, but the chocolate souffle was ohboy chocolaty heaven.
The service was perfect. She was there when you needed something, didn't intrude or linger over our table (which if you have something about personal space I don't recommend sitting in the back because all the tables are very close to one another). Overall, it was a great evening at Range.

Range was voted "Best Bang for your Buck" by San Francisco's 7x7 magazine. That, along with the then nearly 800 yelpers awarding it with such high ratings, made me bookmark it. Range then stayed on my "to try" list  f o r-freakin'-e v e r.

So, I finally made reservations to try this place out. I think what made me put off making actual plans to visit is it's location. Range is in the Mission (yuck, ew, yuck), and is itself a rather small space. Just know that if you plan to obtain reservations via OpenTable, you'll have to leave a credit card to confirm/save your spot. Any cancellations must be made in advance of 24 hours notice or you're gonna be charged twenty bucks a person as penalty. Those cocky bastards.

Anyway, we were seated in the back area, which is really the only area that is comfortable at Range. This is because the front is noisy and right next to the entrance, while the middle seating is neither here nor there, and pretty much would be like eating in a hallway. Doesn't sound settling, does it?

We ordered two starters and two entrees:
- the escarole lettuce w/ radishes, capers, parmesan in roasted garlic vinaigrette
- mutsu apple salad with arugula, pancetta and aged pecorino
- slow cooked pork roast with corn, dino kale and chanterelle mushrooms
- grass fed bavette steak with oven roasted tomatoes, broccoli rabe, barley and horseradish sauce

Although the food was good, it wasn't mind-blowingly amazing. Really nothing to write home about. Pricing is decent, service is mediocre at best, plus I'm not sure if the title of "best bang for your buck" is even well-deserved. Honestly, this place was so over-hyped that I think when we finally tried it out, it's like we set ourselves up for disappointment.  Key to happiness? Lower your expectations. (With FOOD, okay? Not with MEN, ladies)

This dinner was pretty close to perfect. Not quite-- I'd probably give 4/12 stars if I could.

We started with the black cod appetizer in the little pot and the salad with apples and pancetta. Both truly excellent, flavorful and not too heavy.

The cocktails all looked good. We had the vodka one with grapefruit and vanilla. yes, indeedy.

For dinner we had the calif bass w onions and broccoli which was delicious and the chicken which was tender and buttery. There was also enough to take a little home which I always appreciate.

For dessert we split a chocolate soufflee which was light and fluffy but too rich to stand alone. Would have really benefited from some vanilla ice cream, creme fraiche, something to break it up. Maybe a glass of milk?

Overall, a little pricey but worth it for a lovely dinner out. We sat in the back. The service was excellent, though the only reservation we could get on Open Table was at 6pm, so that might have helped. Would definitely go again.. perhaps with my parents to foot the bill.

Really wanted to love this place but I wasn't impressed.  The Calif. bass was alright, but I loved the accompanying veggies?  Tasted forkfuls of the coffee rubbed pork from my other half which was decent.  The highlight for me was dessert, the crepes with figs & blackberries were good.

I had to create this account to yelp now that my new girlfriend and I have had to force ourselves out of bed and into the streets, dining, and drinking establishments of San Francisco to forage, imbibe and occasionally
*not* think about fornicating.

We owe Ken the Bartender a yelp out because he impressed us with his mad bartending and customer service skills a couple of weeks ago when we managed to belly up to his end of the bar to sample the cocktails and food.  I had waxed nostalgic about the restaurant to GF between bouts of discussing what we *should* do to retain membership in the human race...and pervy hott s!!x.

Don't hesitate to seat yourself at the bar.  Regulars sit there and are happy to chat about their favorite food and drinks.

We started with Rosa and Chili Davis cocktails.  Both a bit too sweet to my palate because of their fruit infusions.  Then Ken talked us into trying the end of the tomato season cocktail that he explained would get its sweet flavor from the fresh tomatoes.  We were skeptical, but he was right.

The food was reliably excellent.  We shared appetizers.  The scallops and black cod were our particular favorites.  I wish I could remember what else we ate because the menu changes frequently.  Only things you really need to remember is; sit at the bar, and listen to Ken.

Oh, and shower your GF with good food and drink.  You will be amply rewarded.

Did I read somewhere that this place has a Michelin star? That's a bit hard to believe. The place is ok. The service was more like you'd expect in a chain restaurant - you know the kind where the server is trying to sell a certain amount of appetizers to get a prize or something. The atmosphere is ordinary. The acoustics are terrible; it was so very loud in there. The food was bland and boring. Blah.

Just finished a wonderful anniversary meal at Range.  Our four month old son's babysitter had to cancel at the last minute, but the host insisted when we called to cancel that it would be fine to bring him.  We showed up early and were sat in a secluded area, which worked out well.

Our server, Bethia, was super helpful and very attentive.

We started out with a couple of the house cocktails.  Very tasty.

My wife had the escarole salad and pork loin.  I went for the fig salad and roasted chicken.  My wife's courses were very good, but it's the roasted chicken that stole the show.  Holy cow.  Probably the best I've had!  The fig salad was also amazing.  Simple dishes prepared well.  Refreshing.

We will be returning with friends.

One note, when making a reservation ask to be seated in the back.  Getting stuck in the "middle section" is not a good spot to be.

With that said the food was delicious.

Must order the chicken as well as the pork.

Try a couple cocktails, I was a fan of the Chili Davis

Loved what I ordered here for dinner last night!

Appetizer: Artichoke and mascarpone stuffed pasta with pecans and olive oil (can't go wrong with artichokes and mascarpone!)
Main: Slow cooked pork roast with corn, dino kale and chanterelle mushrooms (tender & tasty, loved the veggie combination)
Dessert: Cornmeal crêpes with blackberries, peaches and crème fraîche ice cream (this was gone in seconds!)
And a couple drinks: the daily special (strawberry, light) & Purple Rain (fruity & sweet)

Service was sweet, attentive and answered all of our questions.  The only thing is on http://Opentable.com, Range requires a credit card # for a reservation and if you don't abide by their cancellation/change policy (notice of at least 2 days), they charge you $10.  I don't think this was that necessary because Range is a good-sized restaurant and doesn't have totally limited seating.

App+dinner+dessert+2 drinks+tip+tax = $60

The pork was effing good. Period! If you don't try that, there's probably no point in going. The pork is thinly sliced and sat on top some corn and a vegetable of some sort, reminds me of kale... but it was a perfect blend of flavors. I normally don't eat too much pork, but this is an exception to the rule!!

p.s. the crepe was not as good as everyone says. It's was ok.

I took my girlfriend to Range for a birthday dinner and was pleasantly surprised at how great it was!  I made reservations on http://OpenTable.com (which I would recommend - made the reservation a week in advance and still couldn't get my preferred time). We were promptly seated when arriving.

We both decided to order an appetizer and entree each, and share a desert.  We traded bites of each dish and everything was amazing.  The zucchini puree soup was one of the best things I've tasted ever - I have no idea what they put in it but it was great.  The fig salad was also delicious.  For entrees, my girlfriend ordered the northern halibut with butter beans, baby turnips, basil and olive oil, which was cooked perfectly and had nothing on it (not fried or covered in spices).  It was just fresh, perfectly cooked halibut.  I ordered the vegetarian dish which was sheep's milk ricotta dumplings with nettle purée, heirloom tomatoes and breadcrumbs.  I was blown away by the flavor and it was really filling.

To finish things up, we shared the cornmeal crêpes with blackberries, crème fraîche ice cream and rose geranium.  It was really great and a perfect way to end the evening.

Overall the service was perfect - our waitress wasn't at our table too much, but not ignoring us either.  The ambiance was choice and I really liked the small windows that look out to the basketball court next door.  It's a reminder that you are at a great restaurant in the Mission that isn't too pretentious, but really refined at the same time.

Went to Range last night because it came highly recommended by a friend.  In general, the food was good but not great.  The best part of the evening was the mystery non-alcoholic cocktail.  It tasted like a mix of raspberries and grapefruit and was absolutely delicious!  I'd go back just for drinks.

Appetizers:
Parmesan Custard with Beets Salad--very creative though finishing the whole plate by yourself could get a little heavy.  I recommend sharing this dish.

Scallops--the scallops were very well cooked though the cucumber + herb broth that they were immersed in lacked acidity.

Entrees:
Petrale sole with melted leeks, chanterelle mushrooms, tarragon and a riesling sauce--again, the sole was well cooked but it could have used some more flavor.

Slow cooked pork roast with corn, dino kale and chanterelle mushrooms--the pork was very tender but would have benefited from some sort of crust.

Dessert:
Seaspray strawberry shortcake--the strawberries were sweet and the short cake was well done but nothing special.

I went to Range last night for a friend's birthday dinner. Great meal. I had the goat cheese ravioli with lime, chive butter - wonderful! The tart lime cut the creaminess of the cheese perfectly, great balance of flavors. Next I had the roasted chicken. I consider myself somewhat of a roasted chicken connoisseur. I try to resist, but when it on a menu, I cannot help but order it.
This roasted chicken, was pretty close to perfect. Nicely seasoned, crunchy skin, super moist meat. The accompaniments were pretty good too - fingerling potatoes with a variety of roasted chilies. My friends had the scallop appetizer, pork entree and halibut entree - they were all also very well received. I am definitely looking forward to coming back soon.

Any time a family member comes into town, I see an immediate opportunity to dine at places that I and my bank account would normally be unable to enjoy.  So when my Auntie showed up on my doorstep the other day, I was not only excited to see her, but so was my tummy.

I bike past Range all the time, and I figured now was the time to give it a go.  Plus, it's got that nifty little Google map dot in front of it saying Gary Danko digs this place.  It's gotta be good, right?

Right.

The first thing I notice on the drink menu is that they serve Pimm's Cup; usually I get weird stares from waiters if I ask for a Pimm's (aka my favorite drink in the whole wide world), so it was nice for a change not to get a "huh?" look.

Their chicken dish is honestly one of the best chickens I have ever eaten, and my Auntie agreed.  I could eat that chicken everyday for a month and never get sick of it.  And the cornbread and bacon sides complimented it phenomenally.  My Mom had the salmon and she loved it as well.

I almost wish this place wasn't so close to my house so I wouldn't see it everyday, knowing I can't always eat here.  It's torture.  I'm gonna have to find a new route home.

Solid Food, great service, and definitely satisfied!

Went here last  night with 2 friends with the East Bay.

What we had:

Fig Salad:  phenomenal balance of sweet and sour... wonderful salad

Slow cooked Pork loin: everyone on yelp raved about this.  It's as billed.
Great taste, super savory corn and mushrooms underneath.  Umami
to the nth degree!  Seems like there must be crack in this dish or
it must be crusted in MSG.... it's too good!

Red Grouper with basil:  perfectly cooked.  Great bean based sauce with
     basil.  Definitely a fan.

Hazelnut Fig Cake with honey lavender ice cream: cake was a bit of a
disppointment.  Honey lavender ice cream yummy.

Seascape Strawberry shortcake:  wonderful seasonal seascape
strawberries and cream... hard to go wrong with that.

Don't miss the red grouper or the slow cooked pork loin.  Really liked the fig salad too.  The mixologist is well-known in SF.... interesting mixed drinks which everyone seemed to like.  We had a glass of the austrian red wine, which tasted like a nice, light Pinot (more Oregon style than
Sonoma).

Would have given this place 5 stars, but the dessert missed a bit.

A Michelin star restaurant........really??

I came here last week for my birthday and was expecting absolute heaven based on the reviews of a trusted friend. We were promptly seated for our 8:15 reservation and later greeted by our lukewarm waitress. This woman had better things to do than to wait on us. We had to ask bus staff and other servers for the drink menu, more bread, etc. The woman just wasn't around, and when we were finally able to get her attention she acted like she was doing us a favor by helping us out.
Anyway, the food: I ordered the chicken. Range's menu is very similar to The Slow Club and Universal Cafe. Just a handful of dishes, with the understanding that everything on the  menu is going to be awesome. As for the chicken, it was ok, but I found it dry in some places and compared to Universal Cafe it was way, way below par. My husband ordered the bread pudding which he did say was excellent.
Also excellent was the drink menu, and they do have an extensive wine list.
I ordered the chocolate souffle for dessert, which was wonderful, but could have used a scoop of ice cream or gelato to go along side, as bittersweet chocolate can make you thirsty. I will not be going back to this place. I love that style of menu and restaurant and I know where to go to get better food and service.

I've been able to make a couple of visits to Range so far, and, overall, have found it to be a pretty snazzy place to dine at.

It has a very lively atmosphere, though I definitely wouldn't call it intimate.
Service has been a bit slow on both occasions, but always friendly.

I have been very satisfied with the food.  The portions are generous, and the food hits the spot.  My most memorable dishes so far have been the albacore confit and the lamb entree.  Everything is full of flavor, yet not overly complicated either.  I love what they do here, both with flavors and presentation.

I haven't delved into the desserts yet, but I shall the next time I make it over...

Inspiring.  Inquisitive.  Ingenious.

A little secret nook camouflaged in the mess of the Mission, Range is the sensual yet comforting splurge-on-a-cocktail-before-romantic dinner experience.

The broth from the raw fish "a la nage" ("swimming in broth") is unapologetically tantalizing to the taste buds.  A flood of rich buttery warmth fills your mouth, followed by rapid, stimulating bursts of tangy, sweet vinegar.  The raw fish (changes weekly) soaks in the broth and melts in your mouth.

Range has humor.  Housemade pork sausage, pork rib, and a hefty slab of braised belly?! It's surprising PETA isn't picketing for poor porky upon entrance.  This sinfully, swine-full dish swirls different pork flavors with each component competing for the spotlight.  Pickled onions and mellow fava beans seal the deal.

Service was sincere and friendly, but became slightly spotty as the night progressed to prime time.  Knowledgeable staff.

Take time to admire the cooks through the horizontal peeking glass to the kitchen!

Know Before You Go:
1. Don't get the pork dish if you're vegetarian....on second thought, do.

Cost:
$$ 100 pre-tip for 2 apps, 2 entrees, cocktail, and dessert!

Anybody who rated this place lower than 4 stars is retarded.

Everything was perfect, and ridiculously delicious.

Enough said.

You know what? I'm going for it. I'm giving Range five stars--not because I can--but because of nettles. Yeah, that's right. You heard me correctly. Nettles. Now, not being a cow, home on the range, I never associated nettles with food. I mean, come on, bovine creatures eat that sort of vegetation, right? Well, a fabulous friend of mine and I walked into Range one night (you know who you are), and a moment in time later, my entire estimation of nettles shattered. We sat at the bar because the place was hopping as usual--always a good sign. Therein lies a little known secret for all you hungry folks out there, plop yourself down at the bar. You'll get your tasty beverages faster, and the bartender can give you expert advise on what's looking yummy in the kitchen on any given night. Sitting next to a really good friend becomes a bonus. Yep. The bar. That's where the whole nettles discourse went down. All the bartenders here are friendly without being obtrusive. Nice. And on the night of the nettles (as it will be forever known), one brave bartender gave me a recommendation that challenged me. We went for it. We ordered the ravioli with nettles, grilled radicchio, polenta with wild mushrooms and goat cheese, and some sort of roasted cluck-cluck dish. Disappointed? I think not, friends. Delighted? Absolutely. Everything we ordered reflected reality: Food made with care by someone who understands. From that moment on, Range has been a favorite place filled with great food and great memories. And nettles? Don't knock 'em 'til you try 'em. They're fabulous!

A little scary getting here, about a 4 block walk to the restaurant from the Mission 16th Street Bart - (had I known it was that far, I wouldnt have worn stilettos).

Don't walk alone, it's a sketchy area, but worth the excursion.

No reservations, about a 30 min wait to sit at the bar; Ken took great care of us. (I HIGHLY recommend sitting at the bar, such an interactive experience!)

Had a drink called "summer romance" or something or other that had real muddled canteloupe (I love it when drinks have REAL fruit)

Bay scallop appetizers were excellent, the pasta was savory -

I am weary of ordering salmon at western establishments b/c they always come out overcooked and dry - not here -  Ken, our bartender/waiter assured us that the chefs knew what they were doing - so, I ordered medium rare, and it was cooked to perfection - buttery, juicey, not dry at all. And the crispy salmon skin was a nice touch!

My friend ordered the pork loin, very tastey -

For dessert, we ordered the berry crepe, nothing out of of this world, not bad, but our bartender/waiter gave us the chocolate rasberry souffle on the house - and it was PERFECT - oh, AND they make their own dessert wine, which we got a taste of  - niiiice

Overall, an excellent dining experience, I can't wait to come again!

Bill came out to be $125 ish, including drinks, appetizers, entrees and a dessert - not cheap, but not entirely a wallet burner either -

Went here for the first time after getting turned away at Spork. We expected the wait to be just as long but we got lucky and found seats at the bar immediately. And I'm glad we did because the bar experience was a blast. Throughout dinner we were able to watch the wizards at the bar cook up fun, unique cocktails that seemed to delight without fail. They even let us taste some of their wackier concoctions for free, and they were delicious. I plan to go back just for the drinks sometime.

As for the food, it was amazing. We started with an elberta peach salad that was to die for. Fromage blanc, hazelnuts & shaved fennel complemented the ripe peaches perfectly. For entrees we shared the alaskan coho salmon & the remini mushroom and barley stuffed cabbage. We asked for the salmon rare and it just melted in the mouth. The fish came with artichokes and turnips but it almost didn't need anything it was so delectable on its own. While the salmon was delicious i think the cabbage was even better. The mushroom-barley filling was packed with flavor and was perfectly complemented by heirloom tomatoes on the side.

We finished off the meal with fruit filled cornmeal crêpes topped by crème fraîche ice cream. The corn meal crepe was interesting, maybe not my top choice for a dessert crepe, but very tasty nonetheless.

Overall this was one of the best meals I've had in SF and I would highly recommend Range for the food and the bar experience as well.

Had a really nice time here. There were 5 of us -- roommates and the parents. Staff was really friendly and accommodating. Had the clams to start -- wasn't really wowed with these. Followed up with the pork, which was very simply presented and very tasty. Interesting set of cocktails.

I think the food was very good, but the great service and the pleasant atmosphere made the whole experience stand out.

I'd always wanted to go to Range, and I thought it was good, but not worth a second visit.

I started with the Black Cod in shelfish bisque.  This was by far the high point of the meal, and it alone would easily garner 5 stars.  I followed that with a duck dish that was very poor.  It was cooked slightly passed medium, whereas duck is traditionally served medium rare.  Also, the layer of skin on the outside was absent.  It was oversalted and had a texture that made it seem processed (almost like a chicken nugget).  It was served over corn which I thought was tasty.

My wife started with the squash blossom salad that was good, but nothing special.  She had the beef roast which was a bit chewy.  Clearly they used a lower quality cut to bring down food costs.

Desert was tasty--some sort of crepe with a a sorbet that we both enjoyed.  Service was good, too.

I've lived near by for 3 years, tried it in the past after not being wowed, and just went back to give the ol' neighborhood Michelin star shop another try and sadly, still feel pretty half-hearted about it.

FOOD - interesting, tasty, but nothing special in the SF market

STAFF - friendly, but they did a pretty bad job describing our meals and wines.

PRICE - this is what kills it for me. I think there are plenty of places in the same price range or even  a bit cheaper ($15-25 entrees as opposed to $25-30) that are just better value in terms of quantity and quality of the food.

AMBIANCE - it is a cool place, I will give them that.

After reading the recent reviews of Range, my expectations were lowered before coming here. What a surprise we had!

My family had a fantastic time. We sat in one of the corner booths were it was a slightly tight squeeze, but good for us. I wouldn't have wanted to be at one of those table in the middle.

The waiter was attentive and answered any and all questions we had about the menu (agree that it was small) and we all found something different to eat. I got the chicken and for me, it was huge! The biggest meal I ate all weekend. Very juicy and tender and just all around yummy.

Deserts were fab. The chocolate was  very warm and normally I am all about the chocolate anything, but the crepes ended up being my favorite. So good!

As with all restaurants in SF, I had a good time, but I don't know if I'll be back considering there is always something new to try. But if you are in the area, I would recommend it!

Went we stopped by after hitting up the KIng Tut exhibit at the De Young.  I had heard all about Range from friends that live in the city, and after seeing that it already had 818 reviews... We decided to give the place a try.

Parking: Pretty easy to find. We only had to circle once around the block.  Considering that the place is in the Mission.  It made the night start off on the right foot.

Ambiance: Once you walk in the door, your senses a treated to a welcoming vibe of people at the bar and lounging around at nearby tables.  However, I have to agree that the middle of the restaurant, despite the view into the kitchen loss something, it does feel like your in a box.  It doesn't help that the bathroom is a single room, so you get a line of people waiting, reminded me of being at a club.

Service:
It took a while for our waiter to show up, but when he did he tried his best to accommodate us. Especially when my fiance decided to order orange juice. Overall, the service was good.

Food:
Not sure if my expectations were met.  I had heard so much about their coffee rubbed pork... but because of the menu change they didn't have them. Instead I got the chicken and my fiance got the salmon.  Both were okay... the chicken pretty much saved the night.

So after a so-so experience, I am not exactly sure what to say about Range. I would love to give the place another chance.... but this time I'll make sure they have the coffee rubbed ribs on the menu before I go...

Damn good time.

The disclaimer is that we came here for our anniversary/hey-we-just-got-engaged dinner, so we were texting and smart-phoneing the whole time. Yeah, we were THOSE people.

Nice, classy American food (with the well-heeled foodies to match); lots of steak, potatoes and veggies, which was just what I was looking for. It won't break your bank, but it's definitely not exactly an everyday dinner spot. Mega points because it takes me about 2 minutes to walk here from my house (though it's very close to BART and there's a garage also very close if you're driving in).

Starter cocktail (something they're known for around these parts) of a Vicious Circle (I think that's what it was) was just what I needed to calm my excited ass down a bit. We started with a little butter lettuce salad; you can pretty much put butter lettuce in anything and I'll eat it. Pan-roasted bavette steak with mashed taters and veggies was done perfectly. Ice-cream dessert with complimentary muscato to go with it capped a wonderful dinner. We *were* tacky and asked if there was anything we could get for being newly betrothed, and they were kind enough to oblige. If you don't ask, you don't get, right?

The man and I were on our way to the Shoreline and thought we should stop and find a nice spot to eat along the way as we waited out the traffic. Just when we were beginning to think that the economy would foil our plans completely (our initial choices were all closed on Mondays), Range came to the rescue.

Open Mondays, check!

Interesting menu, check!

Immediate seating, check! (would normally be a minus for us, though, when time's not an issue)

Full bar, check!

The server was very accommodating, immediately sensing we weren't there to spend the night gazing into each others' eyes. I ordered with her almost as soon as I sat down, and a minute later, there was bread on the table followed shortly by our appetizer (very nice halibut tartare).  Overall, the service was great: water glasses were never left less than half full and all the staff were patient in responding to our needs and answering our questions.

I had the steak (no longer on the menu, I believe, if the website is correct) and he had the fatty combo of pork sausage, glazed ribs and braised belly. Mine was nothing special; if it were still on the menu, I'd suggest ordering it rare as my medium rare ended up a bit tough. The bf's was awesome - fatty, nicely executed with rich flavors; he definitely won that round.

We shared a dessert - the apricot/plum cobbler (also off the menu now) that was more like a biscuit floating in orange syrup. Nothing special, but sufficient for satisfying a sweet craving.

Overall, service was excellent; drinks were good; food was ok (based on the four items we had). As far as it goes in the way of fine dining, probably wouldn't venture back out to the Mission just to eat here, but it worked well as a Plan B spot.

Note:  I don't believe they take American Express; just FYI.
