Neighborhood: Ocean BeachThus far the best mexican i have found in san diego... which isn't saying much, but it's something i guess. I got the chicken enchiladas and they weren't too bad (taste better heated up the next day though). I was with some vegetarian friends and they got some faux meat-type dishes. Not to my liking at all, but they claim it is good for fake meat... yuck. The service we got wasn't too bad at all. Looking back, she may have dragged a bit, but we were chatting and didn't really notice. I did hate their salsa though. It tasted like slightly seasoned canned tomatoes.

Ranchos you kill me!!! I want to love you so bad. I have come back over and over. I must be crazy. Last night was the final straw. I am writing in hopes that the owners will fire their entire staff. What a complete waste of skin. They are the worst servers in San Diego. Ranchos could be the best place in town with ten "pink slips" to their Gawd Awful wait staff!!!!

Pretty good restaurant with a wide variety of Mexican inspired meals that one can't find easily. I got a burrito w/ lentils, cheese, avo, and carrots. It was pretty tasty.
Service was decent.
Definitely want to go there again.
Hands down my favorite Mexican spot in SD. Near my bf's family home and I def make it a point to hit it up every time I am in SD.
Don't get me wrong I love me some dirty taco carts, Santanas and Sombreros as much as any good SD girl. However, the freshness and great ingredients here do not take away anything from the spice or the tastiness here, in fact it adds to it. And you don't feel like you are going to die afterwards or that someone may have peed in your salsa.
I love the Carne Asada burrito, breakfast burrito suizas, enchiladas and pretty much everything I have ever had here. You can not go wrong here.
Also the decor is really cute and nice to sit down or grab food to go.Their smoothies and Mexican coffee is also a great way to add to your hung over breakfast feast.

It surprises me that there are some bad reviews for this place. I'm open to accept the following A) someone had a bad experience - boo hoo. B) someone is so used to eating processed shit all day long they don't appreciate or understand the taste of REAL food.
I've been there a bunch of times and todays coffee and Tostada/ Chile Relleno combo plate definitely inspired me to Yelp them.
The service is up and down, but they're very busy and always polite and extremely knowledgeable about the food. If you want fast mexican take out, you came to the wrong place pinche huero. When you go to Ranchos they're not going to pressure you to eat quickly and get out, quite the opposite, so if you're on a tight schedule it's not so good. On the other hand, they're so friendly that I don't feel bad asking for stuff, if I need them to hurry it up a bit they will, no problem.
The food is legendary and my only criticism is that the portions are slightly too big, I end up feeling sick after going there because I can't stop myself from eating the whole plate. The coffee is organic and has a unique taste. Lovely.
Every time I've been there it's been a good experience so they're getting 5 stars. Congratulations to them for using organic fresh produce and offering healthy dishes as well as some pretty decadent ones at a price you can afford. The decor and atmosphere is also very cool.
Booyah!

Combined my trip to "The Black Bead" with a trip to Ranchos in Ocean Beach. Had been hearing about "The Original" location for quite some time. That day, I decided to try it!
Ranchos has one of the best hot sauce Salsas in town. This was ever bit as good as the one in North Park. The food was basically the same, but I noticed that they cream the beans a bit more at the Ranchos in NP.
The Ambiance and color combination is going in "the same direction". A warm golden colored orange on the walls-- lots of foliage (plants) hanging everywhere. Didn't spot the outdoor patio (which has 4 outdoor seating areas) until leaving the place... but really liked that aspect of the OB Ranchos. It looked like a ground level Tree House covered in foliage with a lot of woodsy, earthy vibes going on. Love that type of thing! Makes me feel like I'm back at the Tree House that we built when I was about 7 years old.
-----------
This is a much larger restaurant than the NP location.
I'm sure this is probably "Hopping" during their rush hours.
I can only imagine what this would be like full of people.
A nice place-- but I really prefer the one in NP.
They have a lot more intimate setting there-- I love the narrow walls and the "feel" in NP a lot better. But both have outstanding Mexican Food and Salsa!
You can't go wrong with Ranchos! Great Mexican Food!
Have been dining at the Ranchos in North Park for about 8 or so months before trying this particular Ranchos in Ocean Beach. I also love the front window area where the ivy is climbing up the windows in NP. That is a cool statement that I didn't seem to find at the Ranchos in Ocean Beach (as a designer, I can't help but notice things like that).
-------------------
What I missed at this Ranchos... compared to the North Park Location?....
1.) The darling black and white checkered floor that gives the room depth and coziness.
2.) The "Cozy " and "Intimate" Feeling that you get when you have a smaller restaurant.
3.) Front Window Area: I just love the vines that climb that front window area. Have never seen anything like that on a pane of glass before-- and it is truly Unique!!!
4.) Funky Location: NP is quickly becoming one of the hottest, trendiest areas in town.

Unbelievable selection. If you're feeling indecisive, try to have a menu at home or something, so that you can choose before you get there. The chips and salsa are verrrrrrr good. Prices are fairly standard.
The nopales (cactus) taco wasn't what I expected, but it's always good to try new things. As noted, there are vegan/vegetarian alternatives to everything, which are as good, if not better than the carnivorous choices.
Service is very good. The restaurant was packed, but the waiter was very focused and helpful.
It might be better to order things a la carte. Enchilada here, tamale there. I also recommend the tortas!!!
Get a window seat and marinate for a while.

Ranchos, ranchos, ronchie!!! How in the hell can you mess up a standard beef taco? You're a Mexican food restaurant; tacos are a basic item on the menu. I ordered two beef crispy tacos, what I got was two soggy soft tacos. Oh yea and don't add potatoes to your shredded beef to 'stretch' it, my mom used that trick when we were kids. When I pay $4.00 per soggy beef taco, I expect there to be beef in it without the large potato chunks in it.
I just don't understand the draw you people have. I'm giving two stars only b/c the people I was with are fun.
I have been going to Ranchos for over ten years now. If they ever close, I will chain myself to a tree until they re-open.

This is the better of their two locations. The food here is so good. There menu is huge and nothing you order will be upsetting, I promise. This is Mexican food done right, and the fact that I can eat it is even better. They're very very very friendly to non-meat eaters, without being exclusively so. Bring your meat eatin' friends too, everyones got something on the menu.

I live a block away from this place and have been there many times. I vow NEVER to return. I'm so proud of them for offering healthy food choices, but if you have no FLAVOR it doesn't matter what you're serving. The food sucks. The only thing worse is the service! You can sit there for 10 minutes staring down the wait staff and still not get your drinks. The margaritas are made with ...??? Maybe Sake?? Whatever it is it's gross.
We ordered a bottle of house wine for $10 and they brought a bottle of $2 chuck and sat it on our table! What a joke!! I hate you Ranchos. The only reason you even get a star is because you keep all the stinky hippies out of my other favorite restaurants.

I ate at Ranchos three times during my recent trip to San Diego. As someone who is allergic to dairy products and not keen on red meat, I loved the variety Ranchos had to offer. I suggest the tofu scramble burrito - the other half of the sandwich served as a great alternative to eating airport food the next day. The tofu scramble was also one of the better tofu scrambles I've had.
The service isn't perfect, but you can't beat the atmosphere and fresh food. I might ask my cousin (an OB resident) to experiment with sending Ranchos via the U.S. Postal Service since I'm not sure I can wait until my next trip!
Just when I thought I hit all the good Mexican restaurants around here I find this one.
It was pretty good. Loved the chips and salsa, green sauce, breakfast enchiladas and smoothie. Reasonably priced and the cute patio was a plus.
I think there was 274 things to choose from on the menu, daang. Will be back to try something more interesting like mushroom enchiladas.

I used to love, love, love this place, until the service started steadily declining. It's just slow. You wait to give your drink order, you wait to give your food order, the food itself comes pretty quick, but then you wait for them to come back to get another drink and you wait forever for your check. I don't know if they just don't have enough staff or what but it used to be the place we'd take OB visitors, and now we just order burritos to go because it pains me to tip for such bad service.
But if you're not in a hurry, and the weather is warm, the patio cannot be beat. Be wary, though! Sometimes they just hose down all the patio furniture and close the patio until it all air dries. And then you can either leave or sit inside under the horrid flourescents lighting.

Rancho's.
Rancho's.
Yum.
This is some good foods, some relaxed atmosphere, and some good times.
They do specialize in the Vegetarian aspects of Mexican foods, but they have a complete menu that includes non-veg (re: MEAT) products. All in all, I like all the food.
Mostly a fan of:
Shitake Mushroom Enchiladas.
Lentil Enchiladas.
All the little burro's.
Los Trios Enchiladas.
I guess I kinda like Enchiladas.
I prefer this location to the North Park one even though it is a lot longer commute to get here. Why? There is more space, the service is a bit quicker, and the food has always (at least to me) been just a tad better (though not hugely).
It is also nice to catch a sunset and then grab some fine Comida Rancho to start the evening.
Yay for Rancho's.

This will be one of the only places I will eat at when I go back to San Diego. They have VEGETARIAN TAMALES which are fantastic. The beans and rice are so good also. I will never be able to eat Mexican food in Seattle again.
Had the mole enchiladas. I asked for the Shitake mushroom enchiladas, but they brought me chicken. I am not a very finicky or picky person so this did not bother me.
The mole was pretty good, nice and spicy just the way I like it. Also they put cabbage in the enchilada. I likes me some cabbage, and I've never had it in an enchilada before.
The rice and beans were good too.
This place is pretty neat. Tons of vegetarian and vegan choices. They serve beer by the bottle, which is always a good thing. I had a good time and want to go back.

Great vegetarian and vegan options!
pros... pretty ok, mexican restaurant in ocean beach area. just went there today, and the place was not too busy, it was just a little past 1pm. the dining area is very big and open, and with a nice amount of space between the tables. interesting decor. the service here is pretty fast and friendly. we were seated very quickly and were served the chips and salsa. the menu is varied, as ranchos is known for having vegan and veggy menu available.
now as for the food, you get some chips and salsa (red sauce). i ordered a carne asada burrito, which was pretty ok. the meat was quite flavorful with pico de gallo inside.
cons...just my personal taste, but i don't like the rubbery flour tortillas. and unfortunately this place serves that type. and when the carne asada is more stewed vs. char broiled, and having a very wet pico de gallo, it made the whole burrito very mushy and rubbery in texture. the taste was very good, but the texture made it very difficult to eat due to the soggy limp tortilla.

While hosting a couch surfer, my roommate and I decided that, since he was visiting from the East Coast, we ought to take him out for Mexican food. My roommate being vegetarian and both the couch surfer and I rather enjoying meat, we had to strike a compromise, and that turned out to be Ranchos.
It's a little out of the way for normal food runs, but I have to say that they've got one of the largest menus I've ever seen at a Mexican restaurant! I was impressed by the variety, and the food was quite good -- a satisfying lunch. Service was okay ... nothing too spectacular, but not horrible, either.
I'm definitely coming back.
This is the first time I've been to this location, this place is huge comparing to the North Park location, which is unexpected judging from the entrance. Though I was a little surprised that the restaurant is relatively empty for a Friday lunch. I know parking can be a pain around this area, but we were lucky enough to get a parking spot on the street right outside and that made my experience that much better. The service is prompt, and the food came out nice and hot and fast - a lot faster than the north park location. I think their food taste the same at both locations. The whole wheat soy veggie quesadilla is loaded with fresh veggies and soy cheese, YUM ~ I LOVE how a lot of their plates comes with avocado / guacamole - no need to pay more to get a "side" of them like most other restaurants. ^________^
It's official: I'm hooked to Rancho's soy cheese - it taste different than the store bought ones, it's milder, thicker and creamier... I wonder if they make those in house. Guess I'll go back to north park and check if they carry them in their market.

A great location for what I call California veggie mex. Interesting takes on standard mexican fare by using things like tofu, shiitake mushrooms and other vegetarian good stuffs! The staff is alway friendly, though service can be a little slow at times. Just order a cold beer and go with the flow, this is OB after all. It can be a little crowded on Wednesday nights when OB has the farmers market, otherwise it's fairly easy to grab a table. Parking on the street or in the back lot.
In the summer, the side patio, which resembles an overgrown forest, is a delight to sit in.

Who knew that there was such as thing as healthy Mexican food that's tasty? Who knew that if you're vegetarian there are other options to Mexican food besides bean and cheese burritos and cheese enchiladas? Who knew that if you're vegan you could eat Mexican food at all? Not me!
I'm actually a meat lover, but my cousin is vegan so I brought her here and we were both perfectly content eating together. I had eggplant enchiladas with salsa verde and chicken enchiladas with mole verde. I can't wait to go back and try more of their stuff! They definitely don't have your run-of-the-mill menu...I feel like at most Mexican places here in SD I know what my choices are going to be without even looking at the menu....Not here!
The service was at a VERY relaxed pace, but then again, isn't that what going out to dinner is for? Blowing a few hours and relaxing? And they did place waters and chips and salsa on our table before they sat us, and get all our orders right.
Oh and the decor is AWEsome. Major props to whoever decided to hang branches on the ceiling. Seriously.

OK, here's the deal.
My wife and I have eaten at Ranchos Cucina twice as part of large parties, and once on our own. We probably wouldn't go there again unless specifically invited to a prearranged gathering.
You have to endure some traffic to get there (unless you live in the area) and even on a weeknight, parking is hard to find. The food is OK, maybe even "pretty good". But the service and atmosphere are both way below average.
A few examples from our dinner there this week: We were part of a large party (20+). The reasonably large dining room filled up by 7:00 even though it was a weeknight, and there was another large table of uniform-wearing high school softball players nearby. It was obvious there was not nearly enough staff, since they were running around and swetaing profusely behind the counter. They got the order of the person sitting across from me wrong. Our food did arrive in a reasonable time, but that may have been because we got there at 6:00, instead of 7:00, when it seemed to get much more hectic.
I was seated at one end of a long padded bench/couch along the wall, and the springs or padding below my seat were missing. So I was in a hole with the table at neck height. A small roach crawled out from behind the headrest portion of the bench, up the wall, right next to me.
Good salsa. I got the three enchiladas plate (cheese, chicken and beef, with three different sauces) which was also pretty good. The person next to me ordered the vegetarian fajita burrito which she mistakenly thought would have ... fajita-type vegetables in it. (It has potatoes, carrots, zucchini, etc. I may have seen some broccoli in it.) But lots to drink kept everyone happy.
Did I mention that a roached crawled up the wall behind my head while I was eating? Won't be going back.

Rancho's is really good Mexican food. I don't think its healthy, the portions can be huge, but the ingredients are fresh. They have a lot of vegan and vegetarian options. Both the iced tea and coffee are amazing. The outdoor seating at the Ocean Beach location is really nice, I wouldn't sit outside at the North Park restaurant though, 30th is a busy street and there is a bus stop right there.
The salsa is delicious. I usually get the vegan soy chorizo with tofu and black beans. Take the left overs home and its a whole other meal.

OH yes, oh yes, oh yes, HELL YES. Gimme some of dat Vegan Guac!
This is our healthy mexi spot in OB, if you have a dog, bring them and sit in the flowery garden or sidewalk, your furry friend is more than welcome.
There are many vegan delights, and vegetarian and meat for the animal tasters out there.
Some of my fave dishes are: Mole chicken enchiladas, tostados, my friend loves their torta's, their refried beans are vegan with NO LARD, their guac is my fave, the only thing I'd change is their chips, they are teeth breaking hard sometimes.
They are kind of clueless stoners when it comes to food service asking you things like "did anyone take your order yet?" and I'll say "umm yes you did, like a few minutes ago, will we be getting it?"
Hee hee, that did happen but still, go there when you're not in a rush, they do take-out pretty quick but the sit down stuff is more like "island time".
If you choose you can eat for below $10 without a drink, or go crazy and have larger plates, whatever works.
Grab a Sangria or Margarita and enjoy.

For atmosphere, especially the outdoor patio, Ranchos gets 5 out of 5 stars.
The food gets a 4 out of 5.
The service is where Ranchos struggles, which is a shame, because it used to be much better. The first couple of times we went, water and chips and salsa was brought to the table even as you were being seated. Lately however, inattentive wait staff has been ruining the experience as diners have to wait too long for a refill of coffee or to ask for some more chips or to receive the check.
Last night, two of the four orders were wrong. I was brought a shrimp burrito instead of a fish burrito, and my dinnermate wasn't given the black beans she very carefully and explicitly asked for.
I'll still order a burrito or some nachos for Take Out, but I don't enjoy dining in anymore, and I certainly can no longer take guests there for a meal. Which is a shame, because it has the coziest little outdoor patio in all of OB.
Perfect for the vegan veggilicious mexican eater that wants tofu and eggplant in their burritos. I went to nico's first to check that out, but there was a girl sitting on the corner with hot sauce drooling down her mouth... and another dude asking me for spare change. I opted to go check out Ranchos with my friend, since I sorta lost my appetite at that point.
Ranchos is dope. I love the veggie variety. I admit that I am a sloppy, gritty, lard loving mexican food eater... and I love a good bean and cheese with lots of hot sauce and cilantro. Ranchos doesn't really hit that spot. But it's a good place to grab some healthy eatin, drink a negro modelo and chill out after a long day's work.
I got an eggplant burrito that was good, not stellar. But I hear the salmon burrito is where it's at.

ATTN FELLOW YELPERS: THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE RANCHOS COCINA LOCATED AT 3910 30TH STREET NOT THE ONE ON SUNSET CLIFFS BLVD.:
Took my dad here with the fam for Fathers Day dinner because he wanted Mexican food. Simply put my old man eats styrophome cups and he couldn't finish his meal at Ranchos Cocina. I ordered chicken enchiladas with red sauce and was thoroughly disappointed. For starters my food was cold. My second complaint was that the chicken in my enchiladas was pink. Now I like pink as much the next guy but NOT when it's wrapped up in a tortilla with beans and cheese. All in all there just wasn't much flavor; everything was extremely bland. The only reason this place gets two stars is due to the good service, and delightful atmosphere.

Good, healthy mexican selections.
This place rocks. I'll admit I judged a book by its cover. I seldomly walk past this establishment and it doesn't look welcoming. Furthermore it looks like a typical run of the mill taco shop incorporated into a restaurant however I was wrong. I go here specifically for their organic coffee in the morning. No other establishment makes better coffee than this spot. The selection of food on the menu is overwhelmingly awesome. It literally takes me 10 minutes to decide what to order due to all the amazing food choices. Ranchos primarily caters to vegetarians/vegans, but don't let that dissuade you from ordering carne asada, chicken, pork, etc. I personally enjoy their shitake dishes. The service is of no complaint to me. I'm just really impressed with the massive offerings of food you can order anytime of the day be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

You know when I'm home visiting in San Diego I have to get my Mexican food on. On my most recent visit home I visited Ranchos Cocina and was pleasantly surprised. First of all, I was expecting it to resemble your typical Roberto's. It's rather large inside with lots of tacky/interesting stuff on the walls and you're actually seated and served instead of ordering at the counter. Second, you can get every Mexican delicacy you could imagine made vegan style in about 3 different ways. We're talking nachos, quesadillas, tamales, enchiladas, burritos, tacos, etc. This is heaven for someone who has turned vegan and abandoned chez in all it's grease and glory.
The chips were a little stale, that was my biggest complaint. I ordered a quesadilla, which was made with Follow Your Heart (or whatever that brand is) cheese. They made the perfect quesadilla, but it was with the white "mozzarella" cheese...and it looked like they put a whole package into my one quesadilla. I guess I forgot that I don't love vegan cheese. But I do think it would be good on something where cheese doesn't play the starring role. I also ordered three rolled taquitos with tofu inside. Those were amazing!! Tasted just like the meaty ones I remember from childhood. And the beans that came along with it were as tasty as I'd hope (ie: a million times better than anything you'd find in San Francisco).
All in all, I enjoyed my food tremendously and would definitely go back to try other things that I can't find elsewhere. But from now on I think I might go easy on the fake cheese.

My friend was always trying to get me to eat here, but I was reluctant because the exterior is not flashy and the restaurant is not on Newport, so you can't do any quality people watching here.
But ugh, I love the food. I was not disappointed because the place has loads of vegetarian and organic options on the menu.
The restaurant serves generous portions of vegetables and they are always fresh.
I, of course, go the veggie tostada and I was so so happy with my order.
Although Ranchos is small I enjoy the interior, but I'm happy to get to-go food here.
If I lived close, I have a feeling to staff would know me by name.

Just went to this place for the first time today. They have a big menu that is full of actually healthy stuff! You can get a lot of vegan or vegie stuff as well. I got the pollo asado burrito. IT WAS MONSTEROUS!! It had chicken, guac, pico, and rice. It was awesome. I couldn't even finish it, and it made me feel pathetic hah. It is pretty reasonably priced too. $7 for the burrito! The only thing that sucked is that it says you have to pay $1.25 for chips and salsa, although I don't think we were actually charged for them.

Four stars for their enchilada sauce.
Whenever I talk to people in San Francisco about Mexican food, I always feel the need to (gently) interject my feelings about what makes a good burrito, and why it is nearly impossible to find one in San Francisco that is reminiscent of the burritos I grew up with in San Diego. Most take serious offense to the notion that Taqueria Cancun is not the end-all be-all of burritos. That's fine, most people who live in San Francisco aren't actually from California and didn't have a burrito until they were 20-something. But those of us who have been having real Mexican food from yea-high know the differences, and feel very passionately about them.
My number one qualm with burritos in San Francisco is that I cannot find a place that can recreate refried pinto beans in the style I am accustomed. Since almost every taqueria in San Diego has pretty much the same style, I didn't really know there were ways to fuck them up. When I talk about my favorite vegan refried pinto beans, I am thinking about Ranchos. This is the place I tell all my vegan friends about, this is the place I hype up so much that I'm sure it'll never live up to expectations...
And lo and behold, revisiting it with a vegan friend recently, it flopped. The beans were bland, the potato taquitos were boring, and the tofu scramble burrito was ehhh. I was called a liar, a loudmouth, and a blowhard. Now, I'm hoping they were having an off day. Perhaps my tastebuds have been altered beyond repair by 2 years of SF burritos. My rating before the last trip would have been a solid five star, but they certainly did not have my back when I finally had the chance to show someone what they'd been missing in SF. But I still love ya. I'll be back.
