Review from Drew M.
While Rancho San Joaquin is right down the street from my work, I've never actually played there. I frequent their range, but haven't ever traversed their golden fairways (actually, more brown than golden).
Considering that Costa Mesa runs a twilight rate of $19 for ML and $22 for Lagos, the price point of RSJ is about 15 dollars higher, and at the end of the day, it's not worth it.
While I was the first one off at 7:30am, that was about the best part of the day. My first point of contention is RSJ's asinine way of marking distance to the hole. So you decide that you're going to print the distance to the holes with paint on the cart path; what if you're walking and the cart path is not viable from where you are (which is most of the time!)? RSJ has solved this by putting a GIGANTIC pole on each hole for 150 yards, leaving me one of two options on just about EVERY hole:
1. Walk all the way over to the cart path and find how far inside 100 yards I am.
2. Count out from the 150 mark to my ball.
I mean seriously, we don't all drive carts, and we don't all carry rangefinders. And if you're going to throw out a huge marker for 150, is it that hard to just throw one in for 100?
Overall here the greens were average at best, with a few tiered greens and some minor undulations. The course was in average shape, and there were a few hazards, but mostly this course was flat, wide open, and not exceedingly challenging.
You can get a round off golfnow for $35 with a cart, and if you get out early you can zip through in 3 hours. If you're looking for a course to switch it up a bit, then it's worth one wack, but overall it's just an adequate place to spend some strokes.Listed in: Kill All The GOPHERS

DO NOT GO HERE!
We came 10 minutes late and the guy working (Jeff Kim) would not let us play. He was a total dick about it too. You work at a golf course buddy. Chill on the pretentious attitude. -

Fairways are not in the shape of golf! Plays so slow! No marshalls around to speed up slow plays. I joined up with two gentlemen who just started golf. I couldn't concentrate on my game. It was a total waste of money and time.

Starter (asian guy) was a total dick. We had a teet ime for 3 and wanted to add 1 to our group, he not only didnt let us add one but refused to squeeze us in when there was NO ONE at the course...THEN we had to split into 2 groups when he had the balls to charge me a cancellation fee for our third player...I called my card in stolen so the charge didnt go through but what a dick... NEVER PLAY THERE EVER...Not to mention i am a 3 handicap and the course took 5 1/2 hours and was a dump (LITERALLY)

I come to the driving range all the time. I got started here. I then went elsewhere and realized that the facility is actually pretty good. I would have rated it 3 stars had I not been to Big Rec in LB. Now that place is terrible.

This review is for the driving range.
The driving range is pretty chill, but covered in a layer of dirt. Not sure why they decided it was a good idea to have it face the afternoon sun, but whatever. It's improving my game a little bit.
Matts are short on tee lengths, many of the range balls have flat spots. -

Played on the course today; a day after just raining, leaving some portions of the green to be swampy. The course was excellent to play on, many different fun obstacles and a very big place overall (5 Stars). The service was okay, some workers seemed like they were having a bad day, and others were very enthusiastic to work and polite. I would definitely go here again!!!

Nothing special here at this course. The greens are a bit dry and many of the fairways are brown. It's not a bad place for beginner golfers. There are a few lake hazards but most of the course is open and spacious. Plenty of room for error if you miss the fairways. The course is nothing to write home about but if you go to http://golfzing.com you can book a tee time with cart for as little as $29. A killer price for 18 holes in Orange County.

Review from brad t.
Sorry Rancho San Joaquin but after my last experience with you, it was an absolute fail! Allow me to elaborate why I was not to happy with this course.
Played on the Tuesday between X-Mas and NYE and had booked a 1PM tee-time that was delayed... No problem I thought, they said only about 30 minutes and the course was booked for the day. That 30 minutes turned into an hour. Finally we tee'd off at around 2PM and continued on our merry way. Problem 1.
As soon as we finished with the first hole we came upon the second hole which was already backed up three groups deep! Really now people? WTF? Problem 2
And so it continued for every hole thereafter... albeit things started to speed up as it became two groups and eventually only one group ahead of us on the tee box.
As we got to the 9th hole, the sun had almost fully set behind the mountain leaving us with just the glow of dusk to finish up the round. It litterly took us 3.5 hours to play 9-holes. And on top of that, we paid for 18! Needless to say, I was not a happy camper about getting ripped off by this course.
If you do go to play, make sure you play early in the morning or play during the week when it's slow if your looking for a twilight game. From my experience with other American Golf managed courses, this seems to be the norm. (Scheduling to many people to play, tee times heavily delayed and no one finishing)Listed in: 18 Holes of Golf

Irvine, CA
I had not played there in seven years. After playing there yesterday I remembered why not - even though it is 5 minutes from my house.
Our tee time was at 10:00. We were told it would be a 20 minute wait. We teed off at 10:30 which is bad enough, but we finished at 4:20 - a 5 hour and 50 minute round - 6 hours and 20 minutes after our tee time. We waited on every tee and on most shots.
At the par 3 eighth hole we waited for the tee to clear and teed off. The entire time the group next to us on the 15 tee were drinking and talking and had not moved. The marshal was watching the whole time and said nothing. When we got to the next hole, we saw at least two open holes ahead of the group. I'm not sure what the marshals are for there. You didn't have to wonder why the course was backed up.
The greens were in good shape. It was a challenge to find grass on many of the tee boxes. The fairways were below average.
When we went to the snack bar after the round the person behind the counter said "I have to leave in 10 minutes". Nice greeting. Next, it took 15 minutes to get drinks at the bar. Only 2 people ahead of me. The bartender had to leave twice to get supplies.
This is one of the worst managed golf facilities I have encountered in my 20 years of playing golf. Granted it is an American Golf facility. If the staff is making minimum wage, they are overpaid based on their performance.
And for all of that, it is overpriced. Stay away! -

I've been to quite a few golf courses/driving ranges in my life and I can't say that Rancho San Joachin was anything special. The only plus side is that I live less than a mile away from here, so the location is really convenient. I just came here to work on my swing at the driving range, so I can't really judge the actual golf course. A bucket of 100 balls is $10, not too shabby, considering that it is in irvine. Overall, the golf course is pretty well kept, and I'd come back here for the driving range

Review from Joshua L.
Laguna Beach, CA
I have played Rancho San Joaquin approx. 10 times over the past few years and used the driving range 15-20 times over that same span.
Pros:
- $6 bucket is a nice price point for the amount of balls you get at the driving range, although 50% of the balls are worn down and should have been tossed away/recycled.
- Price on weekdays to walk and twilight are very competitive for the area. I played earlier this week at 9:45am and paid $29 to walk. Would have been $40 or so if I had taken a cart.
Cons:
- This golf course is run by American Golf, a giant corporation that, in my experience (15 plus years of playing golf across Southern California) cares about one thing...making money! What this means is fivesomes, and lots of them. My round at 9:45am on a weekday took more than 5 hours. Completely unacceptable. When my front 9 holes basically took 3 hours I spoke with the manager at the turn, who was apologetic but offered no refund or rain check. When I nicely asked him what he would do if he were in my shoes, he answered "honestly, I would never come back here again." He was serious.
- Course conditions are average at best: really hit and miss. Greens are typically average condition and very slow. Fairways are decently cut and tee boxes are the same. Some bare spots but some good grass as well.
Bottom line - if you can get on for around $20 or $25, it's worth it if you have the time to kill, because rounds here typically are slow. -
Review from Mike M.
Costa Mesa, CA
I was between 2 and 3 stars on this one. I gave RSJ 3 because of the layout.
The Course: You really have to time it when you play here. After rain it will be very soggy for a week or so. In the dry season the fairways will be brown. Tee boxes in average shape but the greens were fine. What I like about RSJ vs a course like Meadowlark for example is the layout. There are some tricky elevation changes, approach angles and well protected greens on some holes. A standard "for all skill levels" track.
Facilities: Decent clubhouse, good driving range. Very good food.
Pace of play: For where it's located it moves well. There are actually rangers out there making sure that pace is kept. I've never finished in less than 4.5 hours. I've heard complaints from plenty of other golfers about the pace here, but I score based on my own experience.
Value: This is what hurts RSJ a bit. It's about $15-$20 more expensive than it should be. You're not getting ripped off in my opinion, you're just not getting a "deal".
Overall RSJ is not a bad play in the Irvine area. I found that the course has a 50/50 mix of regulars and people who will never play it again. As usual, I'm right in the middle.Listed in: SoCal Golf

I try to like this place. It is the cheapest golf in Irvine. They even will give you a discount on their home page if you book on line. Like other reviews they allow the players to run amuck! The starter is a kid. They can't send anyone off in the right order. People will jump ahead of you on the first tee. The Marshall was more interested in finding golf balls then managing the course. All my complains come from the management of this course. Go to MIle square or Costa Mesa, it is worth the extra 10 min. drive.

Orange County, CA
Okay Sunday afternoon this place hosts our 2nd 18 holes and I have to say it was quite terrible. The greens were like putting in mudd. Maybe it was from all the rain or something but the bumps and uneven growth on the putting surface made it impossible to get any feel. The price at $40 something a person after 2PM while jamming the course with 5somes made it almost unbearable. When you see golf carts driving the wrong way on holes that's usually a good sign it's going to speed up because people are quitting, but to no avail. Didn't finish the round.
Rancho...you're not a upper level course in difficulty, greens quality, fairway quality, bunker quality nor did an ambassador come around and speed things along or give any status. Please make some adjustments...i'm not coming back.Listed in: Golfers Anonymous

Driving range - 4 stars. Tons of stalls, good short game work, quick and easy.
Course - 2 stars. Slow, poor management. I will only play at dawn or back nine otherwise, you are looking at a 5 hr round. -
Review from Tony L.
This is the closest driving range/course near the UCI area. The range is usually pretty packed especially after work and on wkends. The quality is of the range is pretty soso though. Most of the mats are worn out with alot of holes in some lanes. Alot of the balls are quite worn out as well. But at least balls are pretty cheap $6 for 100, $4 for 55 and $3 for $25 if i remember correctly. You get a 25% discount if you get the prepaid keyfob. The range also pretty bad lighting especially after the sun goes down. You're pretty much hitting into the dark and good luck seeing where it landed. So definitely come before sunset unless you just want to work on your short/midrange game. The plus is they have quite a few putting greens, 2 sand traps and pitching areas. Although those also get quite busy after work and during the weekends.

If you are new to golf and are looking for an inexpensive course then look no further. This place has weekly twilight specials during the summer months for only $15.00 (which includes a cart!) The downside is that the course is very dry. And by dry, I mean you might as well be teeing off on dirt! If you typically take a huge divot, like I do, your club literally stops at contact and follow through is altered, if not halted completely.
If you are an experienced golfer, my suggestion is that you try to get a tee time a day or two following a rain storm! -

My son and I went to the driving range this morning and it was our first time there. So I asked the guy at the pro-shop to help us and let us know how to get started. He was horribly rude and frankly did not look like he cared if we stayed or left. The range was filthy. Since I paid for 100 balls we still played but later we went to Strawberry Farms Golf Course and tried them which was a complete opposite experience. They were so welcoming that even it impressed my 11 year old. I will not ever go back to Rancho San Joaquin and recommend that they work on their social skills. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Gonna make it short and sweet peoples!
Course = Nothing Special
Don't expect some PGA Golf status course, and don't expect some raggedy old ghost of a course.
Range = Cheap and Decent
Get the 100 dollar key is the deal here. Good price for the ranges around IRV. No real grass tho. -

Would you like to know the secret recipe for a 4-star golf course in Irvine for only $52??
Take one Rancho San Joaquin GC.
Add water....
What's that?? No water? OK...there you have it.... 2 stars
The fairways were dry and brown. The sand traps unraked. The ballmarks unrepaired.
I know, I know. It's the players who don't fill in divots and rake the sand. However, if it was in good shape to begin with, the players would be more likely to keep it that way.
The greens were very soft, which means they have water on the premises. The restrooms were in rough shape, having port-a-potties on hand right next to the restrooms.
The bratwurst at the turn was pretty good. The online tee times were efficient and a good value. So not all was bad. -

Disappointing.
This course is five minutes from my friends house where I am staying so thought I would give it a whirl. I played Friday afternoon so was able to get a twilight rate and they had no troubles finding a group to put me with.
I expected it to be slow on a Friday afternoon and it was. Poor design with the first two holes being a Par 5 then a Par 3. The overall design is fine ~ fairly pedestrian but acceptable. Not a difficult course but decent length (6,400 yards from the back tees) and a few lakes to add some intrigue.
Based on all that, this should be a solid 3 to 3.5 star course. Alas, this is a 1.5 star course that I have rounded up. The condition of the course was horrible. The fairways were either dead grass or hard-pan dirt. The greens they do water and let the grass grow so they were soft and slow. And extremely bumpy. Will someone teach the players here to repair ball marks properly?
I will probably give this course another try in the fall or winter to see if the fairways are better than during the summer. I know water is scarce, but give a golfer a break.
For now, I will try out some of the other area courses before returning. -

Okokok.
I changed my mind again.
It's actually pretty cool here.
It's been literally a year since I've played here, and I the place looks really good.
The fairways looked a whole lot healthier and the greens were...green.
Nice work folks.Listed in: GOLF, Could some one please kill me?

This review is for the driving range only.
Tip: get the $100 basket
Easy to find location near freeway with plenty of parking. Has your basic single level driving range and decent putting and chipping section on the side.
Prices are par and decent for being in irvine. -

The driving range here doesn't close until 10 p.m. When I first moved to Orange County, I called around the Newport Beach/Irvine golf courses and this one was open the latest. And it's always full late at night, but you can usually squeeze in after waiting a few minutes. 4 stars for the late hours.
Driving range entrance is on Michelson, between Harvard and Culver.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Review from Kevin F.
As someone pointed out, this place is pretty much a health hazard. Rancho is so open, the holes are so close together, and the holes are so short that everyone has this illusion they can drive the greens, so they pull the driver, but they end up spraying the ball, and that puts you in danger from all directions from a fast traveling golf ball. You're safer on the driving range.... I've seen guys end up two holes away from the hole they are actually playing; the course is that jammed pack together.
I shot a 75 here and while a good score, I didn't care. Not challenging and not interesting, and thereby not worth playing.Listed in: Golf Course Collection

Saw "rancho" in the name and figured it was nothing more than a homage to the Mexican/Spaniards who first settled there. Once I teed off, I knew the name couldn't have been more fitting. It was as if the gauchos and cattle were still grazing on what was supposed to be or eventually became the fairway. I spotted sprinklers but cannot confirm if they had ever been used.
Paid $30 for 4pm on Sunday, not bad. Slow pace. I expected better from the city of Irvine. -

Newport Beach, CA
Played here 4/22 and the course was overall in pretty good shape. Some of the greens were recently aerated so the putting surfaces were not consistent throughout round. The fairways and rough were in much better shape then when I played here in Februrary. This is a great course for walking and has pretty good walking rates. From a speed of play standpoint this was the quickest round I have played all year. From start to finish it took about 4 hours 15 minutes. I will say that time was mainly due to playing on a weekday morning.

Fairly easy, cheap and well maintained muni. It's flat and it's fun because you feel like a real champ playing here. But if you want challenging or different, this place is not for you. If you want a quick, cheap and easy round, this is it. But for the price, I'd still rather play El Do, Rec 18, or any IE course.

Solid 3 stars. At http://golfnow.com you can get pretty cheap tee times. Riding for $35 mid-week is ok by be. I have played it 4 times now. Course is interesting. Not too hard, but still pretty fun.
It's a muni course...what do you really want. I guess if you like good conditions, I would go up the road to a fountain valley Mile Square or something like that.
About me - I try to golf weekly and I am a 15 handicap. I hate spending more than $40 on a course and will walk it if I can to keep the cost down. If you fit into this category, then you will probably agree that this course is kind of what you pay for in that price point.
Overall, its worth trying once. I, for some reason, keep coming back, so it's not horrible. -

In one day, I saw a guy get hit by a ball from a errand tee-shot in the face on the front nine and then almost saw someone else get nailed from another errand tee shot on the back nine.
This course is a warfield with terrible Irvine prices. Some of the holes were squeezed in to make 18.
The price you pay for a course in Irvine, go play Costa Mesa over this course. -

I'm currently taking some golf lessons so I can escape my current status as "comedy relief" to my golf buddies.
The practice center is top notch with hard or soft mats for the driving rage people. Plenty of putting practice, bunker practice facilites and even ample parking which for some reason seems to be an issue at any golf course / driving range I visit.
Ask for Kevin - After 2 lessons, he rebuilt my swing and I'm on my way to playing in the PGA! Well maybe not at that level, but at least I can tell some of my golf buddies to stick their "comedy relief" up their arses with some respectable golf.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

Check out Rancho San Joaquin's practice facility on culver/michelson. much more reasonable than other ranges and fun. They have a full practice facility with chipping, sand traps, putting, and driving range with a multitude of markers/pins to aim at. The actual golf course is iffy but if you want to go practice your stroke and save a LOT of money compared to all these other rip off places, check out rancho for a fun night out to practice your swing.
06/02/07: Update, went here today to actually PLAY and it was only 38 bucks to play before 4pm orrr you can pay 50 bucks and get a so cal golf card which allows you to play for 20 bucks before 4pm. the golf course itself is below average, but pretty fun. the greens are in poor condition, but for the price you can't beat it. good place to practice your swing. you will find a lot of slow players out here though, sort of annoying. but it's a good spot to learn golf or practice a few holes in between playing at your usual course. -

i know tiger woods. i went to high school with him. in fact we were in some classes together and if i remember correctly, we worked on a project or two together. that's probably what inspired me to take some golf lessons 10 years after my high school graduation, seeing him on tv day after day, making unthinkable amount of money. and i decided to learn how to play golf in hopes that maybe i can be like him someday. before, i didn't even like miniature golf.
i took a 6 hour group lesson by a pro at this learning center (used to be called nike learning center, but not anymore). the result? i'm not competing with michelle wie yet, but i can hit that tiny ball (roughly 70%...hey, this is a good % if you look at it as baseball, ummm, except it's not). i took my lessons in winter time, so the class had only 3 people. the teacher was very knowledgeable and gave good fundamental tips, but i really think it would've helped me more if i had taken individual lessons.
for those nights you are taking a lesson, you can hit unlimited balls at the driving range. they also give you 50% discount on balls when you are done with the class so you can come and practice. the driving range is very crowded, but inexpensive for south o.c. standard and fairly well-kept.
now the big question is does tiger woods know me? would he play a round of golf with me?
p.s. - the putting facility is open to public at no charge, so anyone can come and practice. -

I played 18 holes here on Friday with my close friend. The pair we were partnered up with was nice and really patient with our newbie selves. The course itself is not that nice or well kept, but it was only 45 bucks with cart on a Friday morning. The course was not that difficult except foe the pin placement on the greens. The greens were pretty bumpy but I've seen worse. This course is great for beginners, pretty wide open and flat. I only lost 1 ball the whole day. I'd recommend this course for high handicappers or newbs starting to play on 18's. The holes are long so ull get some practice with your woods. Bring sunscreen there isn't much shade.

Good old Rancho... This course is a great course located in Irvine. It is the cheapest one there too. Around $38 on the weekdays and $58 on the weekends, Rancho is fairly inexpensive compared to its sister courses in Irvine, Oak Creek and Strawberry Farms. The practice facility offers great specials. When you purchase higher dollar amount cards for the ball dispesers you get better deals. I bought a $50 care with 750 balls and received a free $10 card with 125 more balls. Mats are new and in great condition. I think I found my home practice facility!!!

not that i'm a pro, but this place is pretty ghetto. balls are cheap here and it stays open late but that's pretty much it. there are a grip of tees which also come with A LOT of ppl. this place is always crowded when i go. ppl are always waiting. i get nervous when ppl just stand behind me and watch. anyhoo, i usually come at night when all the other ranges are closed in irvine.
main reason why i don't like this place is because it attracts the not-so-serious types. they just wanna F around and hit balls in every direction. it's annoying. it's like if you want to just smack balls like you're playing baseball, then go to boomers just down a few blocks. they have batting cages and miniature golf. perfect!
i can't remember exactly how much balls are but a pro is that you pay for a card and you don't have to redeem all the balls at once. you can load up and save the rest for another day.
i try to avoid this place as much as possible because i'd much rather prefer strawberry. =) -

Irvine, CA
The driving range at Rancho San Joaquin is totally ridiculous. As a stay at home dad, hitting balls on the driving range is one of my only outlets for outdoor recreation. I had been a driving range customer here since 1998. I thought the place was great until I had kids. I was actually kicked off the property because my baby was crying. Sometimes your baby will just need to cry it out when they are already fed and changed. I was actually escorted off the property by the manager. It was then I realized this place is not kid friendly at all. They run golf schools for kids and yet they allow people to smoke all around the children. I used to buy range balls $1000 at a time to get their discount. But, I will never go there again. The place is so packed, you'll never find an open stall anyway.

Cheapest place to play in Irvine and its not even that cheap. Used to play here like 3 times a week since it was my high school golf team's home course. Not bad. Not great. A good place to play if you want to practice. Recently played here a few weeks ago and damn is it expensive for a course like this. My advice is to save your money and use the practice facilty which is actually worth your money.
