So yummy. We are fans of the coffee and espresso flavors, and the GrapeNut Raisin, and the hydrox, and the sweet cream, and oh the ginger. The hot fudge sundaes are delish!!! And now they take credit cards.
I wonder if their ice cream is made from organic milk/cream. I have been reading about rBGH and it's effects on IGF-1 and links to cancer. Yikes! I just tried to reach them on their website, but the site was down...
Two words: ICE CHUNKS
When there are ice chunks in my ice cream it upsets me. It's happened to me more than once at Rancs lately and the general consensus is that it means the ice cream has been kept in the freezer too long. I used to love coming here when I was younger, but I just don't want to chance crunching on my ice cream when nothing in it should crunch. I really just couldn't give it the dreaded "one star" though - the hot fudge is decent.
My group really wanted to try this joint, and so we came in. Retro/modern decor served to remind one of an updated 1960's diner, with chromes and colours to match.
The ice cream was both creamy and fresh, bursting with fragrance and flavour. It's solid, and not really overpriced, given the quality of their primary wares.
It's a great way to spend a summer, nibbling on this sweet, rich, "oh I'm going to have to go run now!" ice cream...

What's not to like? I'd always rather support a local place than a big chain, and it's great for ice cream. We like to walk the dog down here on summer evenings. What I like best is that they have small sized frappes--good on the wallet and the body. We love frappes, but they're so terrible for you, and the small size is just enough to enjoy it without totally going overboard...plus you can walk in with $8 and walk out with 2 small frappes.
I wish they took credit cards, but the cash-only bit seems to be pretty common among ice cream places like this, so I'll forgive them--remember, you only need to scrounge up a few singles to get a small dish or frappe!
Delicious homemade ice cream and great chocolate sauce. They will make you a custom ice cream sandwich and I love ice cream sandwiches. Only reason not giving 5 stars is they often run out of flavors and the college kids who work there can be really slow and don't always pay attention. Twice I have placed large orders, once over the phone and once by fax, for multiple pints, sauces and toppings and they messed both orders.
My sister is visiting from Oakland next month, and she's already talking about going to Rancs.
Same folks as Toscanini's. Great frozen stuff, and terrific iced coffee. They need to address the disorganized staffing. This place would be a killer destination for coffee, if they spiffed it up a bit, expanded the coffee selection, and hired some motivated staff. Just saying.
Oh, and add some more baked goods. Then you'd cover mornings and evenings. They'd capture a bunch of morning commuters.

This is the second negative ice cream review I've written. People are going to think I'm an ice cream Nazi, but really folks, just trying to help you out.
I didn't like it. The ice cream is gritty (ice grit rather than ice cream, actually), and my dark chocolate ice cream tasted like a fudgesicle. I understand that there are a lot of folks that grew up buying fudgesicles from the ice cream wagon and so such flavors might be reminiscent of childhood happiness, but I was a StarPop kind of girl, so all I wanted to do with this gritty-fudgesicle-in-a-cup was throw it away.
The melted marshmallow topping saved the day, however, because when the friends we were with (who raved and raved about Rancs on the way there) asked how I liked the ice cream, I was at least able to give kudos to the melted marshmallow, making it SEEM like the whole experience was enjoyable. Which it wasn't.
To top it all off, the place was crowded, not enough seating either inside or out, and mess (napkins, melted ice grit, straws, etc.) everywhere.

Rancatore's is a trip for all five of your senses:
Taste: Hard frozen yogurt at only 120 calories per serving.
Hearing: Friendly young staff who actually talk with you.
Touch: Cool brick wall / Handwritten signs for flavors.
Sight: Happy people licking drippy, delicious ice cream.
Humor: Bulletin board with smack-talk written all over the ads: "If your a drug user loser, call 781-894-xxxx" or "I like cock". It's precious.
I had the Hydrox yogurt, and it was great. The yogurt wasn't nearly as heavy and rich as ice cream, but knowing that it was approximately 2x better for me made me like it even more. Plus, at just over 1.5 miles from my house, I can justify a stroll down the block to grab a cone.

I was excited to go here after reading on yelp that the owners of this place and Toscanini's are brothers. I love Toscanini's but I have to say that the ice cream at Ranc's just wasn't quite as good. Something about the texture wasn't quite right, a little bit gritty. Also, they didn't have as many unique flavors as Toscanini's . I had a medium cup of Heath Bar, Cake Batter and Malted Hydrox Cookie and it wasn't what I had hoped for. Just didn't have the "wow" factor for me.

Something about this store screams 1994 to me. I can't explain it. This isn't a bad thing, but bright, primary colored decor against a bare brick background? I just want to break out my dial-up modem and watch "Aaah!!! Real Monsters!"
Since nobody goes to an ice cream store for the atmosphere, it's pretty irrelevant. I don't find the ice cream here as creamy as Herrell's or as flavorful as Christina's. That said, I had a delicious Belgian chocolate flavored micro sundae. The hot fudge was only okay, but the whipped cream and ice cream were quite yummy. I'd say that I got my money's worth on the sundae, which is more than I can say for some Cambridge stores.
The real reason they jumped from 3 to 4 stars is that the woman behind the counter not only let me try 5 flavors, she suggested flavor pairings that were complementary. Is there an ice cream version of a sommelier? Well, there should be.

I'm a fan! One of the cleaner ice cream places I've been too, which means a lot to this neat-freak. It doesn't sparkle, but I'm also not afraid to sit at the tables, you know?
The ice cream and fro-yo are bomb (yeah, I said it). I've generally had a good experience with the staff, too... they aren't always super-happy but I understand... that was my summer job in high school, too. One of the girls working the counter last night lent us her keyring bottle opener for our bottled Coke, so bonus points for her.
I've only been in a few times but so far there has yet to be a huge crowd, and I love to eat my ice cream in peace. The bones of the place are pleasant, too... brick walls, high rafters, and large windows in front. A+
Dunno where this "Private Lot" nonsense is coming from... they don't have one, but there is plenty of free parking on the street.
Oh! And they have a nice, though small coffee and herbal tea selection, too!

The ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt are all wonderful:
even consistency, inventive flavors, and great presentation.
The people who work there are friendly and know about the product...they are also thoughtful about the way they serve it to you!
As a parallel universe bonus:
They also happen to have the only under 25 staff that is 'fully operational'
in the greater Boston area. Actually I think they are actually much younger, which makes this closer to a sacred grotto whence miracles recur on a regular basis.
The space is exactly what this kind of joint should be...so they get a full 5 star rating.
I think it's weird that they have no bathroom, BUT I could not take any stars away since they devised and placed a squeezed-together-legs logo onto the external entryway window with a ~'no bathroom sorry' comment beneath it....
Perhaps there should be no soiling of a sacred space anyhow.

I love you, Rancatore's. Your ice cream is amazing. Your hot chocolate is to die for. Plus, you guys are open pretty late. Service is quick and efficient.
One minus - no public bathroom. Oh well.
This is fancy ice cream in the Toscanini's vein.
Nestled in a storefront along busy Belmont Street, with catch-as-catch-can parking, Ranc's is well lit, bright, and clean. They usually have a house copy of the Globe and the NYT for customers, and the big neighborhood bulletin board has ads for things like personal life coaches, play groups, and other phenomena that let you know you're in Romney country. The staff of well-scrubbed and artfully disheveled high school students (or if you're unlucky, the gruff, loud-as-a-megaphone giant who owns the place), are attentive, unless their friends show up to score a free cone (as mentioned by another reviewer).
The ice cream itself is delicious and not afraid to bring some flavors to the fore, which could be overwhelming for you supertasters out there. My favorites include coconut, sweet cream, and just plain old chocolate. Their hot fudge sauce is incredible. You can get micro sized cups and micro sundaes if you just want a treat without filling up. And their iced coffee is decent, too.

I grew up 2 blocks from Rancatore's and remember the day that Joe opened the store. Not only was I excited to have an ice cream shop within walking distance, but one owned by a rabid Boston sports nut. I loved how the walls were decorated with SI covers...
A lot has changed but the quality of the ice cream has not. I still think that Rancatore's makes exceptional ice cream. Sure, their flavors are not as wacky as Ben & Jerry's, and they don't have any weird creations like Cold Stone Creamery. But they make great ice cream.
I can't think about Rancatore's and not think about High School, and I mean that in a good way. Rancatore's a Belmont institution. I do not believe there is a single person who grew up in Belmont and did not know someone who worked at Rancatore's, if they didn't work their themselves. It's the thing to do after a night time school event. First dress rehearsal for the underclassmen play is over? Let's go to Ranc's. Choral concert's over? Let's hit Ranc's. Bored on a warm summer night? Ranc's.
The place feels friendly and fun, and much of that comes from the social atmosphere created by all of the high school patrons. The ice cream is good with decent variety, but I wouldn't be holding your breath for 31 flavors. It's a nice place to kill some time, have a conversation and maybe run into a friendly face.
The one major criticism Ranc's recieves is that it's prices are a bit high for the quantity you reciev. Not outragous, but more than some of the local competitors and that is often why some may choose to go elsewhere. On a high schooler's budget, some time that extra dollar really counts.
You shouldn't forget where you come from, and Ranc's serves as a nice reminder. Even years after high school, stepping back into Ranc's makes me feel right at home.

This place is #1 in the Boston area for both their ice cream and there hot fudge.
First the ice cream: The flavors are invientive, but not crazy, (like when Toscanini's decides to make five flavors one one week containing paprika). Always fresh and yummy! Pineapple ice cream has actual chunks of (gasp) pineapple. What a concept.
The hot fudge.: The best I've ever had. From anywhere. What's really yummy is having hot chocolate made from warmed milk and a table spoon of Ranc's hot fudge.Yuuuuuuuuum!
Only criticism is that they need to open another place in a better location like Cambridge or Brookline.

This is probably the best ice cream place in Watertown, although I have to say in the Boston area I think this is second to Emack and Bolio's. All of the flavors that I have tried have been excellent, and the portion sizes are huge (I usually order one size down from what I would get at another ice cream place). Their frozen yogurt is also the best I've had in Boston (but for some reason they use Hydrox instead of Oreos in their cookies and cream). The decor inside is also very friendly, as are the staff. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit.
I live right across the street and the only reason I don't go in every day after work is because I never have any cash on me. Otherwise...
The owner is the brother of Toscanani's owner, so this family knows its ice cream. The flavors are fairly basic, but the taste and texture is spot on. It is a little pricey and you can certainly get something very similar in a gallon of Edy's, but there is nothing like stepping out in a hot summer night for an ice cream cone.
And in the winter, try the hot chocolate - hot fudge sauce mixed with milk and steamed. Nothing is better.
I think it is a four star place, but the last star comes from the fact that they are open 7 days a week until 11; there when the carving hits.

I have become so spoiled by having this place down the street from us! The ice cream is so good and homemade, that it's tough for us to go anywhere else anymore!

Ok, so it's been years since I've had frozen yogurt but for some reason the other day I saw it at Rancatore's and I had to have it. It was delicious, super rich and creamy, just like ice cream. It's little pricey but a small is still really big and it's really yummy.
A bit expensive for ice cream, but well worth it. Plus, they're open until 11:00pm, a rarity in Belmont.

Very good ice cream -- best in the Watertown/Belmont area. Can't understand how people would like Celebrity or Brighams better -- they each server artifically green mint chocolate chip (I'm a mint chip snob).
Sundae's are great with fresh whip cream & hot fudge. Good selection of homemade flavors, but usually not too exotic. Also, they rotate frequently so you can't count on the same flavor being there every time (like the aforementioned mint chip).
As others have mentioned it is pricey ($10 for 2 sundaes) but I'm very glad there is a good ice cream place in my new neighborhood. Sometimes gets a little crowded on hot summer nights, but the mostly high school age staff is friendly and usually on the ball.

They've got really nice high school kids working here.
The ice cream - meh. I always get one flavor, and then on the walk home, wish I had gotten a different flavor. But then when I imagine how I would have felt about my ice cream with the different flavor, I imagine that I would have been dissatisfied with that flavor as well. I'm not crazy about their flavors. I guess ice cream joints either get it or don't get it. This one sort of doesn't get it.
But it is near my house - and nothing tops off a drunken BBQ like the whole crew walking up the street together to get ice cream cones together at the end of the night. I dunno, maybe I just haven't found my flavor yet. Maybe I should walk the other direction to Celebrity soft serve...
This would have been 4 stars until last night when my weekly trip to Rancatore's was ruined by some bratty high school kids. I realize that this place is swarming with them and I'm ok with that. But, last night as we were waiting in the line that was almost out the door, a gaggle of kids walked in being led by someone who apparently works there but had the night off. She proceeded to march the gaggle to the front of the line, head around to the back of the counter, and scoop them all free ice cream while we all waited for them to try several different flavors before deciding on one. If you're going to skip line and get free ice cream, at least don't take an hour to decide what you want. Everyone in line was outwardly annoyed. Sure, kids will be kids and sure, my mint chocolate chip with hot fudge was great, but c'mon.

This place is killer. I'm an ice cream snob and I can't get enough of this place. The Chocolate Mousse yogurt is fantastic and the hot fudge is to die for! Their whipped cream is homemade. The staff is always friendly and nice. They have hydrox flavored ice cream that is great and I would also recommend the cake batter. Delicious.
Don't eat here. Really, there's nothing to see. There's no point in you coming here and eating up all the cherry chocolate chip ice cream before I get there. Stay away.
I've been thinking about the reviewers here who seem to prefer Brigham's or some other mass-produced stuff to Ranc's. Maybe they're like my mom; she doesn't like ice cream with lots of butterfat that's really dense. I think she's insane. I'd prefer a perfect vanilla to the most creative mass-produced carageenan-filled stuff available.
The Boston area is know for truly great ice cream. Ranc's is arguably the best. I find the flavor selection at Toscanini's much more interesting, but you can usually find a decent enough flavor here. However, I think the hot fudge here is MUCH better than at Tosci's. It's hot and chocolaty, but not too sweet and just the right amount of milk to compliment the ice cream perfectly.
So to all of you who don't already live nearby... SHOO! STAY AWAY!!

Ranc's has the BEST Ice Cream I have every had!!! Their Callebuat Milk Chocolate is what they're famous for. I will usually get a Callebuat frappe with a banana with vanilla syrup. I mean come on, what's better then a chocolate covered banana? Because that's exactly what this is like!!! You have to try it. If you have never been to Ranc's, please go and treat yourself because you deserve it!!!
It's certainly a good ice cream place, but it wasn't anything special. I would probably go here more often if Brigham's wasn't on the way. This seems like the ice cream shop of choice for Belmont transplants.

Just for the Khulfi (Khulfee) alone this place deserve many stars. It is the best flavor on the planet! The space itself is nothing to write home (or yelp) about, but the staff is good, you can sample till your heart's delight and, most importantly, they make fantastic khulfi!

Really four stars, but Ranc's gets a five from me because of the nostalgia factor (having grown up in the neighborhood I was one of Joe's first, and for many years, most regular customers). That said I've been around the world... well outside New England at any rate... and have returned and am still floored by how good his ice cream is. You don't get the range of wacky flavors some joints around here offer, but the ice cream itself is great: perfect creamy texture and nicely balanced flavors. I particularly like the French vanilla.
I found their choice of flavors to be a little too plain and bland for my tastes (not enough choices with mixins), and the atmosphere struck me as a little yuppie... Brigham's is my favorite Belmont ice cream place.
