What a beautiful and inviting outdoor space! It's the perfectly shaded patio. And the food is terrific. The duck hash with wild mushroom scrambled eggs are an inspiration. The cinnamon apple beignets weren't as appley as I expected; good but once was enough for my sweet tooth. The mac and cheese is excellent. Their espresso, however, is not a strength - good flavor but too much water. Will have to try the coffee next time.
The bathroom's window faces the street. The curtain is a very open weave but don't worry. You can see outside but it's dark enough inside that they can't see in!

I came from Oregon to take the train into SJC, met with family and started my way with one of their awe inspiring Bloody Mary's and serious chow here.
We were not in the least bit disappointed. The owner sat us up on his front porch, set us up with the BM's and give us a little sugar and made us feel like he was our best friend, which was very nice and very kind of him.
Service was impeccable with our server discussing the brunch possibilities like we were the first people from out of town that she ever worked with.
We ate like Kings and Queens and enjoyed a lovely unhurried meal that was very memorable.
And we paid right through butt for it.
And I don't care; it was worth every penny.

I have had a hankering for cinnamon apple beignets since my first visit here!!! Please, take me back!
When I had first heard of this gem, I pictured a quaint house with old-fashioned furniture that accomodated its patrons. Upon arriving, I was charmed. It was freakishly similar to what I had imagined it to be.
The house is adjacent to the railroad station where we parked and traveled on foot. It was lovely. Our waitress was a doll and was extremely helpful when we asked for recommendations. We fell in love with the apple beignets, crab hash, and another type of entree (its name has momentarily escaped me). The hubby had OJ and I a gallon of coffee. We both left full, happy campers. =)
So good it hurts to go back to the other stuff.
I LOVE this place, its a little slice of sanity here in Orange County, gourmet southern cuisine, great music, and amazing overall atmosphere. I honestly cant ask for more out of a restaurant. Just don't expect to get away without dropping a few bucks on your meal, its always well worth it though!

Used to love this place and have been there quite a few times. The food is good, SIMPLE, but good. The atmosphere is quaint; cute little patio surrounded by trees (always shady and breezy bring a sweater).
It's always packed (a little too crowded sometimes). I think the owner LOST IT though, as he seems to think he's too cool for his customers, especially kids. Rude, rude rude... he treats you like you are soo lucky to be accepted into his home/business establishment. Don't get the attitude, the guy was probablyhanded this restaurant from mom and pop and never learned what it's ike to have to struggle to build up a profitable business BY EARNING CUSTOMERS LOYALTY. Plus $30 or whatever he's charging for "Brunch" on the weekends?#%#$! No thanks. Like I said good food bad 'tude
This place is awesome because it's nestled in a street that is frozen in time from the time of that the mission was built. Established in 1881, I felt like I was looking out into the world behind trees, as the train would stop in right next to us. the food was delicious. We went for the weekend brunch and I had the most delicious pomegranate mimosa, then the lobster and pumpkin bisque soup, followed by the most delectable mac and cheese mixed with veggies. DELICIOUS! And the service was excellent.
I love this place, but it's far too pricey on the weekends. A drink with a small starter and a main entree is not worth the $35 they charge. And no, you can't order off of the regular menu on weekends.
Thankfully, the location makes up for it, and weekday fare is far more reasonably priced. It's one of those rare occasion places you go to eat.
I would write down recommendations of what to order, but I can't. The menu changes regularly. In fact, one pleasant menu addition from today's brunch was the lemon curd blueberry pain perdu. Not at all real french toast, but a delightful bit of goodness in your mouth.

Holy moley. This place is WON-DER-FUL! Hands down, the most adorable, pleasant outdoor brunch spot in OC, and worth every penny IMHO! Kind of like Lord of the Rings Hobbit village meets Disneyland Main Street meets Little Town, U.S.A. Picture perfect.
When we got there, the owner kindly offered to get us our beverages as we waited. Fresh coffee was also available. Service remained attentive throughout the entire visit.
I'm just going to list what we tried--it was all varying degrees of goodness:
Drinks: Grapefruit fizz, mimosas. I loved the mimosas in a jar with a huge orange slice on top, but the Grapefruit fizz with a scoop of sorbet on the top was both unique and refreshing.
Appetizer: coffee cake, hush puppies, apple cinnamon beignets (I liked the beignets the best...the vanilla bean sauce was delish!)
Entree: crab hash, duck hash, mushroom scramble (huge portions, and all were fantastic!)
Dessert: home turned ice cream (maple amazingness on crispy amazingness... no other way to describe it!)
The only downside (if you can even call it that) is that this place only has ONE restroom...for the entire restaurant! A few mimosas deep, I was basically doing the pee-pee dance waiting for the restroom to open up! It's a little strange waiting for the restroom when everyone dining can see that you're waiting. Like I said, small downside, but still worth the mention I think!

Had a wonderful brunch here - this is an inviting, and very unique place to meet for any type of meal. Very open, airy, and with excellent top quality food. There is no restroom here, although there is an "outhouse" that is better than it sounds.

YUMMMY! This place is worth the hype. I've been there for their Sunday brunch, and although pricey, worth every penny. The food is delicious (and you won't find those dishes just anywhere) and the setting is so romantic!
The restaurant (house-turned-restaurant) is small and very cute. The food portions are generous and the quality of food/service was very good. If you want to impress the boss, swoop the girl off her feet or just eat some darn good grub, Ramos is your answer! Oh, and don't forget to have at least one bloody mary!

You must get the Mac and Cheese then get the Corn Bread Hush Puppies and crumble it over. Its so worth every carb! The scenery and whole outdoor area are just fitting and you really feel like youre at someones home.. Plus the bathroom is cool, its an outhouse, albeit updated for today but very cool.
This place was absolutely darling.
It's enshrouded by countless plants and has a european-patio feel to it. EVERYTHING on the menu is great. We split sweet potato fries with real blue cheese dressing and they were absolutely delicious- crispy, sweet, savory and creamy. I had the mac and cheese, which was enormous, and full of sundried tomatoes, artichokes, and asparagus! It had a rich, smokey flavor and the cheese sauce was awesome. My friend got a poached egg and hash dish that was gorgeous and fresh-tasting, full of herbs and veggies.
Ask for Jennifer! She's the cutest waitress ever.

This restaurant is perfect for the older crowd and anyone who enjoys quiet, covered patio settings and country style ambiance.
After 2 or 3 visits we can say that the food is pricey, but original and a bit hit or miss depending on what you are in the mood for. (The simpler dishes rate the highest in taste at times).
The service was prompt and friendly on the first visit. The second and third visit we were ignored after placing our order.
Highlights
-The grapefruit fizz (champagne cocktail with soju, vodka and wild blueberries)
-Their biscuits with (cinnamon/apple?) jam.
-atmosphere
If you like bloody marys, request yours without the garnish as it takes up half of the glass and leaves little room for the good stuff.

This is a special occasion brunch for us, but one that's well worth it. I may possibly like the setting here even more than I like the food, but the food is amazing, too! It's literally a house, we sat under a veranda (deck? something?) so you were shaded. The walls are made of wood, and have all kinds of neat knick-knacky things on them (not cutesy). Brunch is $35 each and comes with drinks, a course of beignets, and your main course. I had the mac and cheese which was just all right. It was excellently prepared, but just not my taste. I would definitely go back - the presentation, service, and setting are all incredible!
If I opened my own restaurant, I would hope/imagine that it would be just like Ramos House Cafe. Seriously, this place makes you feel like you're a guest at someone's cottage, and he just happens to also be a great chef.
Besides being swept away by the charming atmosphere and beautiful tea-lit garden patio, the food was also incredible.
Is it expensive? Yes. This place should really only be for special occasions. It's $35/seat so I really can't believe that people bring their kids. Just one look at the menu and you can tell that you're in for a treat.
The portions are large too. I spent so much time savoring and moaning over the huckleberry coffee cake, with its crisp top, tender buttery texture, sweet/tart berries in a pool of creme anglaise, that I was just too full to finish the main course. The duck hash was simply amazing. The mushrooms were fresh, the eggs fluffy and the duck cake in the center was a masterpiece of depth of flavor. I also enjoyed tasting my husband's beignets and crab hash.
Be sure to visit the restroom before you leave. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it's woodsy, cozy and thoughtfully decorated. It really completes the scene that you are a guest in someone's home.
A lovely retreat in old town San Juan next to the train station just became the perfect Sunday morning and maybe even the perfect breakfast.

Pricey but so worth it. Everything there is really cute and the people are really nice. The food uses very fresh ingredients - I think there's a garden in the backyard. Their menu is limited but it's creative.

Breakfast with my husband was very, very good. And the place was pretty busy for a weekday, but still, didn't have to wait in line.
We had the Duck Hash and scrambled eggs, so tasty! But the really great dish was the Pain Perdu with a tart berry compote and a dollop of whipped cream, soooooo goooooood!!!! The bread was crispy and the compote made all the difference. The best part was that it was so much less than it would have been on the weekend.

This place is my ALL TIME FAVORITE RESTAURANT, no joke! I've been here so many times I will never, ever get bored of it.
First of all, the atmosphere is unlike any other. The owner is always there making sure his hungry eaters are well pleased. Once we were cold and he even offered us blankets to use while we eat!! And on St. Patty's day he sure enough had a Guinness in his hand, what a champ. The restaurant itself if set under a vine ridden thatched roof adjacent to his own house where he grows his own garden of herbs that he uses in his cooking. It's absolutely beautiful!
And the food? OHHH the food. The menu always consists of cuisine that centers around the fresh local ingredients of orange county and his own garden. It's always amazing!!! Apple Cinnamon Beignets are always a must, they never get old! And I always, always get the lemon berry shortcake for dessert. It seems so simple, almost passable when you read it on the menu, BUT do not underestimate it. It's simplicity will BLOW YOU AWAY, and I'm not kidding.
The lox toast points are amazing too, if lox couldn't get any better right? Egg hashes are all great, and juices are always fresh (mixed berry juice is SO good, and apple too, its like being in an orchard). Honestly I just love this place. I couldn't rave about it any more!

The Ramos House IS pricey on the weekends. We can all agree on that. But seriously folks; in the world of chain restaurants why not splurge every once in a while on a unique menu and fantastic ambiance? First and foremost, the owner, John Q is pretty much a legend himself. You'll never meet someone who blantenly doesn't care whether you stay or not, he's a culinary genius and he's also got a wicked sense of humor. You just gotta release you're in his territory (he lives in the house where all the food is made) and NO he's not going to accommodate your screaming children. He's here to serve you a wicked bloody Mary and fill your taste buds with a uniquely created dish. And if you don't get that, don't come! That's from a local ;)
One of the best breakfasts anywere. The crab scramble was excellent, the beignets great. Also enjoyed the caesar/bloody mary.

Came here for Sunday brunch and got the prefix menu for $35.00. Super charming place and loved the food (nice portions too). Mmmmmm....!!! Definitely worth the visit. =)
I'm almost afraid to post this review, because as incredible as Ramos House is, I don't want to share it ... which means, I'll have to wait in line to get in.
OK, the foodie in me knows better ... thus, I must share! Ramos House is one of THE best restaurants in SoCal! The atmosphere is incredible ... near the SJC train station, you are transported to a cool, country setting - complete greenery, mason jars, staff in denim and ... an outhouse. And, yes, due to it's Historic status, the owner does live in the adjacent home.
The food (all made from scratch) ... well, my mouth is watering just thinking about all the incredible dishes that John and his staff are waiting to serve you. My favorite breakfast: Crab Hash w/Bacon Scrambled Eggs & Sour Cream Remoulade (mmmmm), don't miss the: Sweet Corn Hush Puppies w/ Pepper Jam (ooooh) or the Sweet Potato Fries w/ Pt. Reyes Bleu Cheese Dip. For lunch, check out their : Southern Fried Chicken Salad w/Corn Bread, Cranberries & Pumpkin Seed Buttermilk Dressing (ahhh), or if you're lucky, the Mac n' Cheese w/ Grilled Artichokes & Lemon (I am drooling)!
This is a secret garden that should be shared with only the best of friends, spouses you truly love, or parents that did not beat you when you were young ... just keep it to a one kid maximum. I have never brought my three ... at the same time. Now, don't get me wrong, my kids are extremely well behaved, but the heart-warming blankets that are draped over your chair on a chilly morning would soon become Superman's cape or a trampoline for Tinkerbell in tow.
Their selection of teas and desserts are dreamy, but one must order the Bloody Mary ... truly a work of art!
A close and wonderful friend purchased the Ramos House cookbook for me ... however, I must admit that I truly love eating THERE. I don't think it would taste the same in my kitchen ... even with the indoor plumbing.
NJ CHICK says, "MANGIA!"

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! Ramos House is a relaxing, wonderful place to have brunch on the weekend. The food is AMAZING and the owner is HOT! Not to mention they have a wonderful Bloody Mary and all kinds of creative cocktails to wet your palate.
It is well worth the money and is a great way to spend an morning/afternoon. John is incredible and his menu is amazing!

Yea, kick'n it in SJC, had a stop for body fuel and found this joint. Cool vibe, good peep and tasty munchies. Like the views and locals. Went to order a second cup of Joe and it was comped. Wayyy cool. Will totally cruz back for more.
Is there any way to give a place more than five stars? if at all possible, this place deserve at least ten. A friend and I came here today (Saturday morning) and there weren't too many people, it was a tad chilly and they even offered blankets for the guests. The ambiance is perfect and very quaint. And if you know me at all, I am a HUGE Tom Waits fan (the word HUGE doesn't even begin to describe my love for him) and sitting down and being able to listen to his music was basically what won me over about this place. I was very giddy. Even on the little booklet that lay on the table that gave a brief overview and history of the place, Tom Waits' lyrics "Down There by the Train" had its own page (the restaurant is right next to the San Juan Capistrano train station). That may not be a big deal for most people but that really just left me smiling through my whole meal.
Anyways, the owner of the restaurant lives and works from the house in which it is located. The food is incredible, it's gourmet Southern food, we ordered the Smoked Bacon Scramble w/ Baby Spinach & Caramelized Onions, SOO good.
If you are ever in the San Juan Capistrano area, you have to stop by this place, it is definitely an experience and you won't regret it.

Good date or family occasion spot. Garden outdoor setting but bring a jacket. Went for Sunday brunch pricey but special. Crabcake hash exquisite. Best beignets since New Orleans.
I can't think of a better review than what Zagat said last year - "Quite possibly the best breakfast we've ever had."
This is the home of an artisan chef - he lives in the place and picks the herbs from his back yard. It's quite an experience, and the food is just to die for.
You MUST try the Soju Bloody Mary (with Scotch Egg) and you MUST try the warm apple beignets.
The care and detail that goes into this breakfast is absolutely wonderful. Taking clients here has gotten me lots of business as well!

Hello. My name is Marisa, and I am completely satisfied.
The hubby and I enjoyed a belated Valentine's Day brunch here. It was sooooo good. Every single one of my taste buds sang out in jubilation.
As others have mentioned, Ramos House offers a $35 brunch on Saturday and Sunday (please note, their website still says $30, and even $20 on one page...hmmm). The menu includes one drink, a starter and an entree (also note, the mini-menu they give you does not include all drink options, so look and memorize online).
We started with the Apple Cinnamon Beignets. Fanastically good. My husband - whose typical response when asked how something taste is "It's ok" - declared the beignets were "amazing." Wow.
I had the Crab Hash w/Scrambled Eggs & Sour Cream Rémoulade (sans the bacon) and the newly discovered food critic had the Wild Mushroom, Roasted Garlic & Sun dried Tomato Scramble. Both were very tasty, and HUGE. We were both only able to tackle about half of our creations (thank goodness for take-out).
Not only is the food spectacular, the ambiance and decor is pretty unique - definitely a rustic country feel. Love how they serve all drinks in mason jars (I'm totally going to copy this).
One "highlight" this morning was watching the owner walk around in his pj's (?). Only at Ramos House...

This is one of my favorite brunch spots in all of SoCal. Because of its rural locale, it makes me feel like I'm in Europe somewhere. My favorite entree here is the Large Plate of Basil Cured Salmon w/ Herb Sauce & Toast. If you're not a big fish person, I would try the Roast Turkey Hash w/ Mushrooms Scrambled Eggs & Apple Cider Gravy as your entree. If you go during the weekends, they only serve their brunch menu and you get to choose an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. For the appetizer, I highly recommend both the Cinnamon Apple Beignets & Caramelized Citrus Salad. There is usually a short wait for a table depending what time you arrive. But you can cruise up and down Los Rios street. It's considered Old San Juan Capistrano and there's older homes that are turned into lil boutiques selling handmade crafts and arts. Bon apetit!

This is about as charming as it gets. The menu is a recipe book so you can see what is in each dish and you can view photos. Juice is served in mason jars with a fruit topper, burlap sacks for table cloths... I mean, birds will come and perch on your shoulder, it's practically a Disney movie! A guy even proposed to his girlfriend while we were there.
If you're looking for cushy seats, giant servings, or a Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity, keep looking. Ramos House is about unique, authentic, and delicious food. My girlfriend and I are looking for excuse all the time to make the drive up there. Take your girl, if you like her.

Ramos House isn't for everyone, but it sure is for me - LOVE IT. Actually most people seem to love it too - cool. The food is simply incredible - I sure wish they were open for dinner.
Johnny Q (owner, chef, inhabitant - seriously this is his HOME) is a nut job, but I adore him - he is not for everyone however. Loud rock and roll and NO patience whatsoever for whining, substitutions, baby strollers etc - think soup Nazi with a happy buzz.
But oh the food... I dream of the crab hash and beignets. Oh my. And yes, it is not cheap by any means - brunch is $35 prix fix - no exceptions. You will be stuffed - won't need to eat for the rest of the day, but don't even think of trying to split it between two people - $35 per person period. yum yum yummy. Best restaurant in the OC without question, in my opinion. Wish i could eat there everyday - I'd be the size of an elephant! I wish I could go more often on weekdays - stupid job - because the menu changes more frequently during the week - you get to see John's creativity (AND it's ala carte, so you can go smaller if you want).

I recently visited Ramos House Cafe with my baby (well he's 25 now...lol) brother this past Black Friday after Thanksgiving. Trying to be good and not go shopping since everyone around me knows I have way too much stuff.
Great choice. The food was delicious, the service was great and the ambiance was super cute.
*Tip for guys: take a date (or yoru mom) here for a weekday brunch. (I heard weekends are super packed so that might be annoying since they do not take reservations). Cute train station near by, small little shops to walk around and look at things.
I would not reccomend having a big party here, it will probably be annoying for you and your guests as well as everyone else. It's a quaint little getaway. I dont want to have a quiet brunch with my brother with a group of 20 hungry people in a birthday party squeezed into a small table next to me. Large parties probably wont get great service anyways. It's a small personable place. Everything is cooked from scratch and is fantastic. I had duck hash, caramilized citrus salad, bacon wrapped dates, beignets and the soju-bloody mary with Scottish egg and crab leg. Super yummy. I cant wait to come back to try more things.
John (the owner) was there to great everyone. It was my first time there and he was very nice to me, my brother and everyone else around us. He even brought me a blanket to use while dining there because it was a little chilly. He's a very nice guy that's popular with the ladies and I believe he does not wear underpants.
Not that I was looking, but he was standing in front on me when I was sitting on the porch having drinks with my brother...he was dressed grungy in jeans with holes...hence..that is how I knew he wasn't wearing underpants. Funny. Atleast he's good looking, it could have been a lot worse...lol.
He looks like a laid back rocker guy which is kinda funny since his restaurant (which is actually his home too because he lives there) looks like something out of Stepford Wives and is all prim and proper.
Great place. I will be back.

Lodged in a historic adobe building, culinary genius chef-owner John Humphreys turns out contemporary American Cuisine with Southern flair. The tranquil patio seating flanking the herb garden provides just the right ambience to serve the OC's best Soju Bloody Mary. On weekends, the $30 brunch menu completes the experience and includes a beverage, starter, and entree. Favorites include Cinnamon Apple Beignets, Potato, Corn, and Buttermilk Crab Cakes with Field Greens and Smoked Chili Remoulade, and Home Turned Ice Creams.

Ramos House Cafe is not only my favorite place to brunch in the OC, it is my favorite place to eat in the OC. The location is ideal; beautiful, picturesque and lovely. There always seems to be a cool breeze and a wonderful atmosphere, here. But who cares about atmosphere when you are eating the most delicious food you can imagine. You can't go wrong with any starters although the beignets are my personal favorite and every one of the mains is worth the calories. If I could, I would eat here every weekend savor it!

Went here for weekday lunch with a friend. It's a great place to sit outside to enjoy a warm summer day. My friend and I shared the cinnamon apple beignets, the smoked bacon and spinach scramble and the spicy crab cake salad. All tasted great, especially the beignets! The scramble wasn't runny (which I like), and the crab cake salad came with 3 (or 4?) big crab cakes. Lemonade was served in a mason jar, which just added to the cute-ness of the place.
Only downside is that it is a bit expensive.... ended up costing almost $30 per person.

I've recently relocated from the Bay Area to So. Orange Co. and I've had one overwhelming element of distress in the move. I've been unable to find a great Sunday morning breakfast spot. That is until now, thanks to John Q. Humphreys and Stephy. In the neighborhoods near me, there doesn't seem to be any understanding of the value of Slow Food Nation or an artisan approach.
I originally went in search of a compelling bloody mary, but I'll go back for every aspect of the experience I had. The patio was perfectly inviting with soft warm throws draped over the backs of chairs to keep you warm should the morning drizzle be too chilly. By the way, the only thing the morning drizzle did for me was invite a group of considerate winged table guest to keep me company while I savored every bite. As a starter I had Basil Cured Salmon with Herb Sauce - the main was Duck and Wild Mushroom Hash with a side Cinnamon-Apple Sauce Beignets. Incredible.
As amazing as the food was, so was Stephy. She was so engaging and confident. She introduced herself and assured me that I would be taken care of by everyone there. She suggested extra details (like the Scotch egg and crab with my bloody mary). When she asked about me, I could tell she really wanted to know and shared my enthusiasm for the food.
John, the chef and owner who looks as much like an Irish neighborhood bartender (complete with ink and a paperboy cap) as anything, was a joy to meet and highly complimentary of his team.
I imagine I'll eventually give a 5 star here, but I'll save it for my 3rd or 4th visit. Thank you John and Stephy and I'll see you next Sunday.

If you live in Orange County and have not been here yet.. please I beg you.. GO! Take someone you really love here, someone who appreciates food, the outdoors, and something different. The perfect date would be brunch at Ramos House and a train ride down to San Diego. Ramos house is situated in the garden/patio of an craftsman house right on the train tracks of old San Juan. Everything about this place is good, there are all sorts of touches that make this place stand out, from the ambiance, to the ever changing menu. Unless your prepared for the prefixed menu items on the weekend, save some money and go on a weekday. Ditch work and have a long brunch on the patio. I'm not going to suggest anything on the menu because it is ALL GOOD. You can never go wrong with Ramos House.

Really cool experience! Old town San Juan is really a treat in stucco suburbia oc. The food is excellent and very gourmet. The menu is creative and inventive from anything else you will find in OC. I would give it 5 stars but it's just way too expensive, breakfast for 3 on a Sunday was over $120.00 with tip. I recommend to go experience it maybe once a year, but its not worth the price. I would say it's a great date place will definitely impress and sets a great mood/vibe. Supposedly it's cheaper during the weekday's because you aren't forced to use the fixe prix menu. Go check it out!
The Ramos House is stupid good. If you have a problem with Ramos House, you have a problem with me. Please provide me with your name so that I may never speak to you and your address so that I may come kick you in the teeth.
Sunday brunch, bloody Marys, great coffee, amazing beignets, crab hash, fine salads. 'Nuff said. Alex G out.
