8 reviews for Rakestraw Books
What a terrific local bookstore. Their new location is absolutely perfect with tons of natural light. The store has a very open and vibrant feel. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful-- you can tell that they really love books. This is the place to go if you are looking for hardcover books. They also carry paperbacks, but I was impressed by the number of hardcover books in their collection. Their collection is decidedly thoughtful and carefully selected.
They didn't have the book that I was looking for, but they offered to order it for me. Instead, I left with a beautiful edition of a book I had no intention of buying before I came in.
Plenty of street parking and a free public lot right next door.
Great local bookstore.
Staff is friendly, helpful and willing to order any book if they don't have it in stock.
I adore Rakestraw Books. The new location is even better than the first. Micheal and the staff did an amazing job putting it together. The staff members are incredibly well informed, well read individuals who go out of their way to help their customers. An amazing selection for a store its size.
Support the local shops-especially the local bookstore that carries great books and will special order anything you ask for. This store also hosts writers (Barbara WaWa and Henry WInkler were here last year) and Danvile's own and the former KTVU guy Mark Curtis will be here to promote his new book sometime in the nearish future.
The people who work here are friendly and very helpful.
I'm a huge fan of local bookstores and cafes. I came across Rakestraw Books when I found out about Alan Brennert's book signing of his latest release "Honolulu".
The staff was incredibly friendly. It was a wonderful browsing through the inventory of books. What a great selection!
The signing was well organized and very enjoyable. I looked at the poster of their upcoming appearances, and was impressed with the selection of authors. I hope to return again.
They did announce that they will be moving. I hope their new location continues to hold the same charm as this spot did.
So, Ethan Hawke wrote and book, and actually did a book tour which Rakestraw Books hosted at the new Danville Library. RS also has a great selection and nice staff.
Rakestraw Books is the kind of indie bookshop that readers dream about finding: a carefully chosen and intelligent inventory; smart, friendly service; an intimate and charming atmosphere; and world-class author events.
Regulars, like me, make a beeline for the Staff Favorites Table in the middle of the shop, where there are stacks of books -- recent and older -- that someone on staff has read and loved. There is always something here that's new to me (and I read lots of reviews and haunt bookshops), but that these guys have already discovered. They're always seem ahead of the curve to me -- Chabon, Rowling, Zadie Smith, they were there first.
The first reviewer mentioned coming here for an author event (and expressing surprise that her favorite should be here), but she shouldn't have been surprised. Rakestraw gets great authors. Among the authors whom I have heard here are: Richard Russo; Michael Chabon; Salman Rushdie; Philip Pullman; Zadie Smith; and more. And, they have got a couple cool traditions: when Pulitzer Prize-winners come to read they produce these cool, letter-press broadsides and they also raise money for books for the Danville Library.
I could go on, but you get the idea. This is a great bookstore and an important part of the Danville community.
When one of my favorite authors, Max Barry, announced on his site that he would be going on a book tour for the paperback version of his latest book, Company, I eagerly checked looked for the bookstore listed under "San Francisco Bay Area."
Rakestraw Books?
In Danville?
Seriously?!
I think I've only been that far north on 680 once in my life. There was an uproar on Barry's blog from those of us in the Bay Area. Why, Max, why, we uttered.
That didn't stop my friend and me from going, however.
Not only was the book reading/signing great (Max Barry is always awesome), the bookstore was really cool as well. The owner obviously knows his books and is actually also a fan of the author. He even ordered pizza for all of us who came.
Good times, good times.
Will definitely try to go there again. There are always author and book events going on. I totally recommend checking out Rakestraw if your favorite author is paying them a visit.
