1 review for Racine Art Musuem
Racine! This industrial town of 90,000 on the shores of Lake Michigan, about 12 miles south of Milwaukee, is so underappreciated. It's off the beaten path a bit, you have to actually get off the interstate and drive for a ways to get to Downtown Racine. In fact, growing up in Milwaukee, I hadn't even been there until 2003 when I visited this awesome art museum.
The huge art museums (the Met, AIC, etc) bring you the whole world of art. The mid-level museums like Milwaukee's focus on some key areas but still give you the breadth, if not the depth, of the big museums. Then you've got small art museums like Racine's. You're not going to see Egyptian art, Japanese woodblock prints or the impressionists here. What you are going to see is a deep collection of handcrafted art, like jewelry and housewares. You're going to see a great collection of labor art from the Great Depression. You're going to see in depth collections on a few interesting and focused areas.
RAM is awesome. It's set on Racine's main street, a nice, vibrant collection of shops and restaurants, right off the Lake Michigan shoreline. The residents of Milwaukee and Chicago really need to show Racine some love and check out this awesome art museum.
