So truth be told- I've only ever had the nachos here. Well, nachos and water. The water isn't anything remarkable, but the nachos are pretty great.
Atmosphere is fun and the pictures plastered on the walls provide some interesting conversation points. All-in-all, I'd say great friend hang out, bad date locale.
Mike: "Liz I have to take to this place Rachel's, its divine"
next day:
Mike: "Liz this Rachel place in Brooklyn is so good we should go!"
following day:
"So this Rachel's place.."
Me: "Ok, ok let's go"
I arrive and wait patiently on a cute wooden bench outside...ooo they do brunch, yum! Damn it, it ends at 3pm...boo to those who really like to sleep in on Sundays. Mike arrives looking refined in his deep v-neck. We are seated in the lower seating area which is like an indoor patio thanks to Mike's suggestion to the hostess. The sun beams in, we are seated in cozy chairs, and I am happy to be in good company.
The waitress arrives and Mike orders the Moijito he so much enjoys there and I order the Rachel's original frozen margarita laced with a sugar ring on top (I ask for sweet, they oblige). The drinks are presented, they are strong and refreshing... : ) . Two chimichangas are ordered one vegetable, one chicken...mmm I am happy to be a meat eater again. We fill our growing hunger with the perfectly seasoned nachos and salsa that the placed on our table upon arrival. The salsa is just spicy enough for me to keep the waitress coming back to fill my water and to quickly empty my margarita glass.
Soon that banging looking chicken chimichanga is laid before me and I shoot a delighted grin at my linner partner. I am certain I can take down this bad boy...several bus boy trips to the table and I still can't finish that last little corner, damn. I give in and let them take my plate.
Now its bathroom time and I am buzzed. They have only one bathroom...COME ON one bathroom for an entire mexican joint!! I hear a star being knocked off, whoops. During my wait I whisper-yell to Mike from upstairs until he hears me and I waved. My pocket vibrates 2 seconds later with the message "Dorkus"...aw heart you too Mike!
Once back at the table I am grinning ear to ear. Great inexpensive mexcian food, solid service, strong drinks = buzzed me, comfy atmosphere, and perfect company. Rachel's next time Mike won't be having to ask me more than once to go!
I look at my chimichanga picture and think I want that in my stomach now. What a dream...
So as far as Mexican food goes in NYC, I'd say this place was pretty darn good. Having been spoiled--I lived in San Diego for four years, best Mexican EVER--I wanted to find a good place in the city, and Rachel's delivered well enough.
The margarita was strong, the salsa was spicy (although you only got two baskets of free chips, not unlimited like most of the places I have been to, maybe it's a CA thing), and the enchiladas were tasty. I had a cheese enchilada and a veggie/corn enchilada-my first experience with a vegetable enchilada. It was DELICIOUS. I recommend it. The pico was sooo good. My friends had the Chula Vista burrito (like a California burrito, with french fries inside), and they enjoyed it.
I think I need to try some other Mexican places around here before I make my final decision as to whether I will continue to make the trek out to Brooklyn solely to eat at Rachel's. But when I am in the area, I will definitely be stopping by again.
Now I want Mexican food.
I was really bummed to hear that Rachel's was part of the below minimum wage problem in Park Slope. I'm sure it's been taken care of since the results of the big neighborhood sweep of restaurants were made public, but that doesn't excuse the violations: http://ny1.com/1-all-b...

What do you want for mexican in Park Slope? It's tasty and well-priced with strong drinks. That satisfies all of my requirements. The burritos are huge, I usually share one of those and an app with a friend, which frees up some of my budget for the dranks. Which are delicious. All different flavors, though I do believe the grapefruit margarita is my fave.
can i give no stars?
omg i can't believe this happen in fact my lawyers is contacting them.............................................
so me and my girl decides to have mexican food and try this stupid restaurant by our house"(what a wrong decision) so we get there get greeted by the bartender (she was nice) so we get seated
my girl order the carne asada with rice and white beans
i order the fish tacos and the pork tacos
here we go guys, so my food was delivered to the girl seating at the bar (next to me) she touch her food, excused me, my food, she notice that it was the wrong item, the girl tells the bartender the bartender tells the server the server tells the cook, the cook said i am not making a new one so the server said just add salad to it.............wtf is that........the dude grab my food add it salad to it and send it to my table after 3 ppl touch it........wtf again........
so i tell the server "i know you not putting that plate in front of me" she said "why would you said that"
i said "what?, are you kitting me?" i told her to take the food away and just leave my girl's food................she out the plate in front of my girl and it was the wrong dish
and the worst part was that the manager was standing 5 feats away from us and never never never came to our table to talk with us.......... i really wanted to like this place but dammmmmmm they made it difficult for me
how can you served food that has being touch by one costumer and 2 employees..............i guess my lawyer will let them know how wrong they were.............and eddie was no help
Still a very good place to to eat
However, they keep switching around the days of the happy hours specials. the last i dunno 4 times I went there they either change the date or type of drink special you get so I always missed the specials and ended up getting the regular priced drinks. LOL
Still very very good to chips and tacos! Their drinks taste great too!

My gf loves this place. I like it a lot.
I lost track how many times, I've been here. It's prolly… Read more »
I went here yesterday because the place the bf and I wanted to go to was closed for Labor Day (who does that?). We walked in and was told to somewhat seat ourselves at one of a couple of tables gestured by a wave of the hand. We did get menus fairly quickly and within a couple of minutes, we did get a waitress to stop by to ask what we wanted to drink, and did get our drinks fairly promptly. Downhill from then on.
Maybe about 10 minutes later, one of the servers decided that we should get some chips and salsa. While that was welcome, it did take a good 15 more minutes to get the waitress to come back and take our order. This is close to half an hour of sitting there and waiting for her to stop by (I could see her sitting in the back the whole time). She finally came back into the dining area and proceeded to go to a table that just got there to take their order and then came by to ask us if we had decided (we had. about 25 minutes prior.)
After getting our food (which was actually decent despite the fact that they use bagged tortillas and some sort of meat out of a bag (maybe chicken?)), we proceeded to eat and was never once asked if we needed anything. We finally got our stuff wrapped up to go and the waitress finally came back to give us our check.
The prices are pretty decent and the food seems decent. We didn't drink, but I've heard ok things about their 3 dollar daily beers. The biggest disappointment was definitely the service. They really really need to step that up as there were multiple times that people were just standing around not doing anything and we were waiting for any sort of recognition that we were paying customers.
I'm a little torn with my star rating here. Up until this summer Rachel's had a solid 4 stars. It's not that it's great Mexican food but it was reliable and enjoyable. And if you're lucky enough to get the "sweeties" waitress, it's even better cuz that girl rocks the waitress world.
HOWEVER, since this summer I've noticed a disturbing trend of unreliability. The refried beans have come a few times so runny I wondered if there were beans in it at all and it lacked flavor. My favorite fish taco has been less than tasty at times and don't EVER order the side order of guacamole. Disgusting.
The last visit was so bad that the boyfriend and I think it's going to be a long while before we're ready to try again. Rachel's was always our safe place, we'd go regularly and count on a yummy dinner. I don't know what happened but I hope they get it straightened out.
Rachel's is a good, affordable place to get cheap Mexican food.
The decor looks like what TGI Friday's has been trying to do--a bunch of kitschy, colorful crap on the walls. You'll likely get all Marge Simpson on the place musing, "An alligator with sunglasses on? Now I've seen everything!"
They also have a cool outdoor patio, which is closed in so it's still functional (albeit cold) in the winter months.
The burritos are mega cheap and are literally the size of your entire arm, and can easily be split by two people and both can still leave stuffed. An $8 burrito shared by two friends? $4 for dinner? Could quite possibly be the cheapest dinner in Park Slope.
Yummy! Not the very very yummiest ever but the margs are strong and blended! Not bad if you're in the hood already!
The best burritos I've had in NYC have been served to me by Rachel's and its offshoot, La Tacqueria.
I could care less how "authentic" they are compared to California, but I still know good Mexican food when I eat it, and Rachel's has plenty of it.
Rachel's has a nice patio out back for the warmer weather months, and the staff is attentive for all your food and nacho refill needs.
$3 beer of the day. SOLD.
Very large variety of burritos and other things. Some unique stuff, some classics. Punk rock atmosphere, a little bit of a corporate attitude (goes with the 'hood maybe?)
OK, Rachel's is good, sometimes great and sometimes below average. It drives me crazy that this place can't be consistent. One night I'll have a five star chicken mole burrito and then a week later it's a two star, take two bites and throw it out disaster. Some nights the rice and beans are perfect and other nights they're so salty you think someone dumped a whole box of salt in by mistake. Drives me nuts because I can't depend on this place. But when it's good, it's really good. One more thing that's critical. It's much better when you eat in. Ordering takeout from here drops the quality exponentially. I wish I could give Rachel's 4 or 5 stars, but can't until they get their quality control sorted out. Still, it's the best "mexican" food in Park Slope. (that means it's not as good as Sunset Park taquerias and nowhere near as good as San Francisco burritos). Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the quality of their guacamole varies tremendously. Sometimes they use rotten avocado or let it sit out until it's brown and gnarly. I've had more than one burrito ruined by rancid guac. C'mon guys, get it together!
I am the "out-till-six-woke-up-at-three crowd" Mark A's review speaks of, and yes I was craving nachos. Unlike Mark A, I have serious standards for Mexican food. It seemed impossible that it would be so close to my house, all the right things on the menu, decent prices, and actually taste good too... it was too good to be true. There had to be some kind of fundamental flaw just beneath the surface, like nacho cheese **shudder**
Well, I'm happy to report that Rachel didn't break my heart. It didn't blow my mind, but the nachos had real cheddar cheese, slightly spicy shredded chicken and a healthy amount of guac. The only problem is that they put the cheese on top of a lot of the toppings, which meant that the chips themselves got soggy and disintegrated completely underneath the toppings.
Everyone else's food looked good and I enjoyed my nachos, but I have to say the service was seriously lacking. The waitress was alright, but the drinks needed some help. I was pretty thirsty (see the first sentence of this review...) and drained my water in about 3 seconds flat, and only saw one refill the whole time we were there. It took an excessively long time for our other drinks as well. To their credit though, I did see a sign in the window saying they were looking for more bus boys, so hopefully that's temporary.
Total American, New York, overly riced overly stuffed massive burrito. Which is good, and has its place (in my belly).
Unfortunately, the waitress was a total idiot. She left us with only one menu and missing silverware, and then ignored us. Later, she came over with a huge dish of guacamole we never ordered and insisted we ordered it (we didn't.) She took it away confused, and the table next to us had to hound her for THEIR guac. When we got the bill, she charged us for the guacamole! I wasn't shocked. Are you?
On the plus side, I got completely housed by two margaritas after all that burrito. I got all the way home from Brooklyn and passed out facedown with my clothes on. What a raging hangover. I would have given anything for that guacamole the next day...
Definitely, hands down, without a doubt the best burritos in the neighborhood. People who know the neighborhood might realize that doesn't mean much, since there's a shortage of quality Mexican food in Park Slope. But this is legit. EVEN accordingly to people from CA, and we all know how snobby they can be about their Mexican food. So it MUST be good.
Tip: They're HUGE. Get the Baja, which is half the size of the Outrageous. It will still be more than you can eat. You have a choice of the meat and one filling, I usually get the carne asada with grilled corn, and choice of beans (black, red, refried).
My other fave is the Del Mar burrito, with shrimp and chipotle sauce. Yumminess!
My friend doesn't really do brunch...
*sigh*
so R has no clue on where to go for brunch.
R only knows Blue Ribbon, but they weren't even opened for lunch.
*sigh*
R mentioned there's a Mexican place that we could go to and HELLO...
Mexican and I just go hand in hand since me is from Tejas!
So of course, I am like Yes, I am willing to walk further down 5th Avenue to go to this Taqueria place.
As I opened the menu, I noticed the words..."San Diego, and Los Angeles".
*sigh*
Ughhhh, I am not that big of a fan of these Cali-Mexican places. I either like real Authentic Mexican or Tex Mex.
R got a steak burrito with pinto beans and a Jarrito Lime soda.
EEKS...the soda was so sugary!
I got one Fish Taco and one Pork Chile Verde taco.
I didn't like their version of the taco shell. It was all fried puffy and it made it really hard to eat.
The waitress even warned me and said that the Fish Taco was spicy and I said I am good with spice.
Dude, it wasn't even spicy!
The Pork in the Chile Verde wasn't shredded instead it was big, chunky dunky sized meat.
YIKES!
I didn't like the flour tortilla that they used either.
They ran out of their Horchata, but I am pretty sure I would have been disappointed as well!
However, this place made a MEAN SALSA!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE their salsa here!
Lately I've been on a total crusade to get fat and Rachel's has been an excellent comrade in my quest.
My full-bred Texan family raised me on Mexican food and I consider myself an expert on the cuisine. This is not it, but there are some lovely exceptions that are beautifully executed, especially for such a low key joint.
Their mole sauce is rich and tasty. I love it. They make their tortilla chips in house and the difference is wonderfully noticeable. Also, the salsa actually has a kick to it...I get so angry when other places give you the wussy-ass stuff.
Though everything else is more Americanized Mexican, it still totally hits the spot. Their margaritas are exactly how I like them: not too sweet, really cold, and with a bit of a bite. I also LOVE their grilled shrimp. There was one day when I thought I might quell the fat crusade, which led me to the shrimp salad with mango strips. It was all kinds of wonderful. But don't worry, the warrior in me awakened yet again to devour nachos and 2 margaritas in the same sitting.
In the end, Rachel's is comforting and filling. Though, I would definitely go for dinner. Lunch has no table service and they often won't cook certain dishes (ahem mole) until 5 p.m. In the end that's a good thing, because no one wants to see me margarita drunk before then anyways.
I'm going to spare you my usual rant about how whack Mexican food is on this coast, and say that for my expectations Rachel's was a-ok.
It's cheap, it's reasonably tasty, and the portions are more than generous. I mean, I got the Ultimate California burrito and it was seriously the biggest fucking burrito I've ever seen in my life. We're talking twice the size of Chipotle, 3+ pounds easy. And less than $10. Not bad.
Drink prices are very affordable as well. The wife liked her Margarita, and I had some beer with chili and lime concoction that wasn't good, but it was cheap.
Which brings me to an observation. Now bear with me as I veer off on a tangent here...
There seemed to be a lot of couples here.
Now at first glance that makes sense. The place is casual and fun, and there's nothing like a few belts of tequila to bring out the inner slut in your companion.
But then there is the caveat of having date night at a Mexican joint: Mexican food.
I mean really...
Isn't that going to more or less cancel out whatever sorority girl tendencies the Jose may have awoken in your date? At the very least it's gotta take anal off the table right?. And if that's out, then why am I picking up the check again?
But I digress.
In conclusion, Rachel's is certainly one of the more passable Mexican alternatives in my neighborhood, and I'm sure I will be back (particularly on a weeknight when it's by one get one free combo plates) just not on a night when I'm hoping to get lucky.
The food is okay, but the service can be very uneven. For example, every time I've walked in, there is no employee at the front to acknowledge your presence, so you kinda just stand there awkwardly until maybe the bartender notices you and/or you demand to be seated by seeking an elusive employee. After that, your service depends on your server, where we've had pretty bad to okay. The portions are fairly large and the chips & salsa are good, so... solid 3 stars, I guess.
Rachel's is in a great location, and the food is always delicious. Their fish tacos are amazing and the servers are always friendly. Plus, they always have a $3 beer-of-the-day special, which is a great deal. I'd highly recommend Rachel's if you ever find yourself in Park Slope craving some solid Mexican food at a restaurant with a great, friendly vibe.
I've been to Rachels about 3 or 4 times now. Pretty standard mexican fare. My roommate really loves their tacos, and thinks they are some of the best in the Slope. Since I try to eat on the healthier side when I can, I was excited that they offer no fat yogurt in place of sour cream. It's the little things that make me happy - and this really did.
Also can't beat their drink prices - $3-4 draft beers, $5 other beers, $15 pitchers. Even the cocktails and margaritas are only around $7.
They're bound to be busy, which is great and exciting and good for them, but sometimes it affects their service. Last time we went, our waitress was a bitch. She brought me the wrong food, and when I mentioned it to her (nicely!!), she ripped the plate out from under me and walked away. This was the first time I had awful service there, so I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt, but man was she horrendous.
Love that they make the guacamole fresh at your table - nothing beats good fresh guac. Our medium guac was a little bland, but nothing a little S&P couldn't help.
I will keep Rachel's in the rotation for good food and better drink.
This has become one of my go to places now for good, inexpensive Mexican dinner and drinks.
Generous portions, great décor and they have $3 beers of the day. Their burritos are HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE so remember when you're ordering your dinner, if you order a burrito, don't have anything else. My girlfriend really enjoys their fish tacos plus the fact that they have no fat yogurt instead of the regular sour cream (I personally think that's just wrong but that's just me).
Generally I stick with the beer here cause they have a nice selection. If we go in a group, the girls usually get the pitcher of margarita which they seem to love.
Service is OKAY. Every once in a while, we do get a waitress that seems to forget about us, or we have to remind them that we also ordered drinks, or something else. Staff is never rude here and very apologetic if your order is a little messed up.
All in all, if you want good food and atmosphere, try it!
My friend sent me here saying "I had a burrito and it was the size of a baby..." I've been here a couple of times now and overall I've really enjoyed myself. The staff is very friendly and the food comes out of the kitchen in a very timely fashion. I had a coconut margarita from their specials list for $8 and it was divine. As far as I can tell the burritos come in at least 3 sizes, no I couldn't tell you which burrito comes in which size but no matter which one you get be prepared to have leftovers. I had the baja with chicken on a wheat wrap with pinto beans, yogurt and all the regular fixings. The healthier options are greatly appreciated and quite delicious. I wasn't very happy with the quesadilla that I tried and my lady told me that her tacos were just okay, so I say pay the $7-$8 for the baby sized burrito, they are definitely worth it. Enjoy!
The food was only so/so and kind of pricey for what it was I thought. Also, the back garden in the summer turns into some sort of sick daycare center. I went there with my best friend and we had looks darted at us everytime we accidentally cursed. Awwwwkward.
This place is just okay. Food is kind of meh. Atmosphere, two thumbs down. The servers also were kind of harsh and unhappy looking.
This place was really great, me and a friend of mine strolled in after we were meandering around wondering where we could both eat something that would leave us pleased. Since I don't eat meat, generally I don't make a fuss over it since I can find something on the menu, but it beat trying to find something at "Five Guys" It wasn't too crowded which was nice, and they have a great backyard area to eat but since it was a but nippy we opted for eating in.
The environment was nice, and our waitress was super cool. All tattoos and grundgy style. We started with tortillas as an appetizer which was a giant platter. After my friend got a chimichanga (sp?) which looked from my point of view a giant steaming cheesy delicious monstrosity! I also got a shrimp taco, which although, really spicy was good.
I would definitely consider going to Rachel's regularly because the menu is large enough where you wont get bored easily, and everything is really reasonably priced given its neighboring eateries in the slope.
Good fish tacos, with of spice to spare. Delicious margaritas. Guacamole was decent, though not transcendent. The best part was the chill cantina atmosphere and the loungey garden in the back, complete with couches.
After moving (and putting together Ikea-ware) for hours in my new Slope apartment, I was dehydrated and ravenous. I walked down 5th-ave and decided to judge books by their covers (or in this instance, restaurants by their fronts). Rachel's Taqueria beamed out at me like lady Liberty herself. The red sign called to me, as did the patrons parked in the outdoor seating area. When I walked in I was quickly provided with chips and salsa. However, these chips didn't come from any market down the street. These chips are like baked pita, accompanied by Rachel's hot sauce.
The hot sauce is decent, somewhat fiery yet not overwhelming. Silent bus-boys incessantly scoped the bar, ensuring all water glasses were filled. However, no straw was ever offered, not something I care deeply about, but I know many who do. The bar had a small television airing the Yankees game. I enjoyed this aspect of the bar because if I wanted to know the score, (why would I, I'm a Red Sox fan) I could look up, but sports wasn't being shoved down my throat. Along that line, the music playing in the background was subtle, yet noticeable. At one time I caught myself singing along to Layla but never did I have to shout to talk over the sound of the music; it was the perfect balance.
The wall decor is inviting - music relics including photos of Jerry Garcia, Jim Morrison and more. Ahh, but what about the food, you ask? The burrito I ordered was enormous for $8, enough for two people or two sittings (unless your gluttonous, which I was on this evening). The meat inside the burrito was a hamburger (not hamburg, but an actual hamburger) chopped up.
Overall the food was outstanding, the service was top-notch, and the atmosphere was wonderful.
A year ago I would have given this place 4 stars. But why did they change this place to table service? This used to be one of the only good places in the neighborhood where you could walk in, get your food and either sit down or take it to go. Now if you want to sit down you have to have table service. They have also raised the prices.
I like the food here. It is good. I love getting the taquitos with rice and beans. The burritos are huge and definitely hit the spot when I'm in the mood for that but I am disappointed that they changed this place to table service.
I am so sad that Rachel's has gone so far down hill. When I first moved to BK in 2006, Rachel's was THE spot for Cali- style Mexican food, at least the kind I grew up with in California. However, the last few times I have eaten there (during 2008-2009) have been disastrous food-related experiences. The carne asada I ordered in May 2009 was tough and fatty, the tortillas were stale, they put iceberg lettuce on everything (really insulting to true Mexican food lovers) and the salsa was almost like ketchup. The nachos were cold and the cheese was congealed.
When I first began going there, their food was fresh, hot, and delicious.
Now, I suppose the owner has become much more concerned with the drink crowd as he probably makes most of his profits from that.
I guess I will have to keep searching for a Mexican restaurant that remains consistently good. Sorry Rachel's, you have lost the loyalty of this expat Californian.
Tacos for gringos is how I always thought of this place. There's nothing special about Rachel's. The burritos have too much rice, there's an over reliance on cheese, and the food comes out too greasy. And at last check, the didn't take credit card orders.
You have a choice when you get Mexican food. Stay away from Rachel's unless you have a very good reason.
We had a great Friday-night dinner here. Having grown up in South Texas and just moved to NYC from San Diego,CA, I was seriously jonesing for Mexican food. The guacamole molcajete was prepared table-side and was excellent. We ordered pork enchiladas, tacos, chile rellenos, refried beans and rice, and a cheeseburger (for the gringo hubby). The pork was savory and tender (I highly recommend it in the enchiladas and tacos), the beans were odd -- tasted like they mixed picante sauce in them -- but nonetheless, they, too were pretty tasty. The chile relleno was sub-par, in my opinion - barely any egg batter/breading and luke-warm. The margaritas are excellent, but a tad on the small side. Don't order a side of flour tortillas, because they only carry the burrito-sized. Finally (and surprisingly) the show-stopper was the burger! It was grilled over mesquite and was thick and juicy. As a plus, it's the cheapest thing on the menu - $8.
I will definitely eat here again soon!
WOULD IT KILL YOU TO SMILE?!
I have been here 4 times, due to the cheap prices and humongous burritos. But honestly, the burritos aren't so great here. The times I've had chicken in it it's been fatty and gross. They overstuff them so that it's impossible to pick up.
I mean I'm cool with eating with a fork and a...WAIT there are no knives available? That's cute.
The workers here speak extremely quietly, act rudely and NEVER smile, except when there are no customers.
Disappointing but a good way to get full, cheaply.
The longer I'm away from San Francisco the more I need Rachel's.
They do Californian Mexican right, so much so that I will never ever go back to New York Mexican! If I ever almost do, I'll chew cardboard instead, basically the same.
Great Service, nice patio, great drinks and always a smile to greet you- it's like being home. Good Job Rachel's, and hey.. thanks for being nearby!

Best chips I've had and I'm from California.
That was the easy part, the rest is very complex!

Decent Mexican food and I'd probably go back. As many people have mentioned, the burritos are huge - so huge that after splitting an order of guacamole and chips I could only eat half. The prices of said burritos are more than fair but the guac was a bit pricy ($8.50, though they did make it tableside). Overall, I'd recommend Rachel's to anyone who is absolutely starving because that's what it'd take to finish one of those burittos. So yeah, skip on the guac and you have yourself an enormous and cheap meal.
We went here Saturday afternoon because the out-till-six-woke-up-at-three crowd was craving nachos. As a native-Californian who never really ate a whole lot of Mexican food, I'm definitely no authority on Mexican food.
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the Pollo Tacos - the spicy Colorado sauce was amazing. The rest of the group seemed to really enjoy theirs too. Great atmosphere and very good service. I'll definitely head back here next time I'm craving Mexican food in Brooklyn.
My ladyfriend and I spent the last two years in Tucson, AZ eating some of the best Southwestern Mexican food, and we had no idea Rachel's was right around the corner from our apartment until tonight. We had tacos, chile rellenos, and enchiladas along with some house margs and walked away convinced we'd be back. The staff was super friendly and the bartender even gave us a free strawberry pina colada b/c she had an extra from the blender. Definitely some of the best mex food we've had in the city, which is both props to Rachel's and a bit of a wag-of-the-finger to NYC.
This is the SO's newest favorite in BK. I think his comment was "this is how a man should eat" after having one of Rachel's GINORMOUS burritos. I am a plate cleaner, and I could not finish my burrito.
Anyway, the food here isn't anything spectacular, but it is great for the area, and the vibe is more fun than places like Mexicali or El Nuevo Portal. There are lots of tour posters covering the walls. Good drinks $4 draft beer, and like $6 or $7 for a margarita. Can't be beat :P
Ohhhhh, come on, already! I love you, Rachel's, you are my favourite neighborhood Mexican restaurant (if not for the ambience, to be honest, El Nuevo Mexicano Taqueria would be my favourite, but second to favourite is not so bad....) but come on! It's Cinco de Mayo for god's sake....why couldn't you be more on your game?? The food is awesome, the drinks are usually superb (always get the frozen margarita WITH salt, thank you), the service amiable and competent, but on Cinco de Mayo, you fall flat on your face?? We didn't get our guacemole, the waitstaff was completely uncoordinated, our drinks didn't come on time, and we were half through with our food......Oh what a disaster. But you know what? It's the best place around to stop in after an outing, work, a game, the gym, or just whenever. I love Rachel's. I just shouldn't have picked my old favourite to celebrate a holiday.
