This is our Saturday afternoon staple.

This year, Des and I are training for the Rock & Roll, and every Saturday morning is our LONG run of the week, which we usually finish off with a decent breakfast. Since we eat breakfast late, the hunger doesn't strike back 'till about 3 or 4.

Perfect. Happy Hour at RA is one of my favorites in all of SD. 1/2 off sushi, appies, and $4 Kirrins. Can't beat this anywhere else.

Viva Las Vegas Roll every Saturday!

* This review is for the bar area only *

Ichi... ni... san... SAKE BOMB!  Whenever in Gaslamp and looking for a great time, stop by RA to start off the night with a BOOM.  It's sake bomb time!

You can get a great deal for sake bombs at RA.  For $15, you get 2 large Sapporos and 2 large warm sakes. All in all, you get a full 6 sake bombs (3 per person) with only $15. Domo arigato!

I ducked a star because the bar area is a little uncomfortable to get to, as it's usually extremely crowded inside this restaurant. Still, that's not a bad sign at all - just means it's a popular place, right? Now I just need to find the time to actually have dinner here.

Although I don't eat sashimi, and some would say that's not even a real sushi lover.. but I don't care because I consider myself as a REAL and TRUE sushi lover, and with that being said, I hella know good sushi I see it, or in this case, when I eat it!

I came here for the first time with my boyfriend. The atmosphere was really great, unfortunately, I can't say the same about the food. I mean, it wasn't bad.. but it wasn't jaw-dropping great either, ya know? And the service could be 10x better!

I will be coming back here no questions asked. They have an AWESOME happy hour, bottle of Kirin (i prob. spelled that wrong) and a bottle of Sake for $5!!! I'm a fan! Me & my friend sat in the bar and the bartender was really nice & funny and he had great suggestions. Once the bar started getting busy we weren't able to see the bartender again but the service was still pretty good. I would recommend this place for happy hour, no doubt! I haven't eaten here for dinner so i'm not sure what the prices are like but the food is delicious so i wouldn't doubt that it's worth it!

RA Sushi is a pretty happenin spot -

I've never been there without the whole place being packed and I usually start out with ordering hard alcohol then work my way to the Sushi.

I love the spicy tuna rolls (I always order them everywhere I go) but the Las Vegas rolls just blow me away.  It's a must everytime I go there to order at least two orders of the Las Vegas rolls because everyone wants to try them.

Although it can get busy in there, I love the atmosphere.  No complaints from me!

I have been here many times before, but I only like to review a place up to a week after I have been there.  I ended up here after the Chargers let us down yet again during another postseason, which also happened to be a "reverse" happy hour.  The hostess was polite.  Given the amount of people there, and our waitress was quick. Prices were good, but only if you ordered what was on the happy hour menu. I am usually here during non-happy hour times and that bill always adds up.

Started off with orders of beer, followed by the good appetizers tempera/gyoza/edaname.  I loved the Viva Las Vegas roll.  Not sure what was in it, but it was tasty and the best roll.  While I have had larger portions of nigiri, it still hit the spot, as we were just looking for a quick sushi fix.  Service was good, even though we were in the bar and the place was quite full.  This is one of those cool places you go to for sushi before you hit a night in the Gaslamp.  There are other places for good sushi that isn't going to pound the wallet.

I haven't had the chance to try the food here, but it looks very tasty!

However, their happy hour is pretty awesome. $5 for a large beer and sake. This is a hip and fun place to go with friends.

...mmm...now I want sushi!

This was the second sushi place I went to when I moved to San Diego.  Somehow, my girlfriend and I had fond remembrances of this place...

We went for lunch on a Sunday while downtown.  There were about 5 other people in the restaurant, so we figured it'd be a nice quickish lunch.  Well I don't think our server liked us or something, because it took her 20 minutes just to take our order.

We ordered two hot teas, unfortunately I've had good hot tea and powdered hot tea, so I know the difference.  They serve the powdered version.  (I don't mind it, but made the mistake of telling my girlfriend and she sent hers back.)

The sashimi serving sizes were suprisingly large.  In the states, I guess bigger is better.  I didn't care for the 'super-sized' fish portions, but some people do I suppose.  Fortunately, they don't have the pink dyed ginger, so that saved them from a dreaded one star review. (Pink ginger at a sushi place always gets a 1 from me, that stuff is nasty.)

All in all an ok sushi place with large servings for sashimi.  Nothing to write home about as its pretty damned expensive.  I think around $35 for lunch with tip.

$1 Bottles of sake during their happy hour....Awsome

The trick to this place is to only go there for their happy house. Otherwise you'll be paying too much for pretty average sushi. During their happy hour they have cheap rolls and even cheaper drinks. $1 dollar bottles for sake.

This place has a cool atmosphere if you like loud trendy dance music and hot servers. I'm a bit ashamed to admit I like trendy dance music, its a guilty pleasure. Your paying for the atmosphere not the sushi keep that in mind. It is downtown so it will be a bit pricey and the parking sucks. But you deal with that any place downtown. You really have to take this place at face value. A sushi bar with a club feel.

I think RA stands for Really Axpensive! Ok, so that's not the proper spelling, but you get the point. This sushi chain is pretty good representation of many of the restaurants in the Gaslamp. Overpriced, corporate, and perfect for catering to tourists who don't have one of these in their city.

The food isn't bad and they have quite a few different options, but for 7 bucks a spicy tuna roll I better be getting a shoulder massage from a hot server who's whispering sweet nothings into my ear. Instead I got snooty service from someone who looked like they were having either having a terrible day or just hated everyone. I rarely call out waitstaff, but there is something to be said about being nice to your customers and it didn't' happen here. I'm sure it was just someone having a bad day, but it really soured me on the experience.

There's many spots with more affordable sushi and friendlier staff that I'll spend my dough on next time.

Yes, this place is loud and obnoxious. Yes, this place is a chain. Yes, this place has retarded high prices.

But if you come for happy hour and happy hour only, you'll be...well, happy! I was just as surprised as anyone when I had their happy hour for the first time. Surprising good! The drinks and most apps are half priced from 3-7pm. The wait isn't too bad even at this time. You have to understand that their happy hour is less about quality sushi than about stuffing your face with drinks and unhealthy appetizers, but you can't beat how much food you get! If you go in with this in mind, you'll have a good time.

Based on the other reviews I would never come here thinking I'll have a nice proper sushi meal. I do recommend it for happy hour though.

This place wants to be nightclub more than it does a sushi house.   Is that a problem?  It's really up to you to decide.

The plus sides to this place were the look and feel of the room.  Very modern, very dark, some money went into this place it feels like.  Also the waitstaff is young and attractive.  College aged no doubt.  If you like a drink the bar is nice, usually with the game on.

The food itself is good.  It's not amazing, but it's good enough.  They had a nice variety of rolls, from the very basic up to the original and edgy.  Price is probably a little high, but if you're in gaslamp you were expecting that right?

My only gripe is the service.  10 minutes to get a bottle of Sapporo.  Longer to get food, and the check wasn't a picnic either.  Sure it was a dinner rush, but dinner for two shouldn't take 90 minutes.

Also the music can be loud depending on where you sit.  Don't get me wrong I like the clubs.  Actually I ate here on my way to a House of Blues concert.  But my date and I had to lean in close to hear each other, which sounds romantic at first, but again... 90 minutes later can be cumbersome.

Would I come here again?  Yeah, I think I would still.  The place is loud, perhaps a little brash.  But really thats why we go to Gaslamp isnt it?  If there is a happy hour then it's definitely worth checking out.

Si I've been to ra only a couple of times, but the 1st time i went just for a couple of drink & I didn't pay, so the only thing I can say is that it has a good ambiance  & if u get  to sit next to the window u can really get a show on the weekends. U know all the girls that barely have any clothes on, that are arguing with some guy because he look at them like, u know.... sluts.....

But this past weekend I went with a cousin (he's from out of town & wanted something californian?!?!) for the happy hour, & I really liked it. I'll be honest if I would have paid full price for everything it would have been 3 stars, but if u want american style sushi, that is good, with a good ambiance, this is a good place to go.

Of course if u want more traditional sushi, don't even think of going in, u probably hate it!!

So remember this place is best @ happy hour, otherwise is a bit overpriced....

I wanted to add Ra to my "Best of SD" list...sadly, it won't be making the list. =(  Yes, the must have is the Viva Las Vegas..but the must do is simply not to dine here.

Restaurant seating ends at 11pm, we walked in at 11:15..boo hoo.  Fortunately, there was an open table at the bar!  We all ordered sake bombs for $5, a small sake and beer.  Not bad.  The Viva Las Vegas Roll was average, but not worth $12.50 for 5 measly pieces.  All it is is imitation crab with cream cheese with spicy tuna MIXED with more imitation crab on top.

The reason I'm giving Ra two stars is:
1 for the pretty and friendly waitress.
1 for playing Michael Jackson!!!!
Billie Jean...is not my loverrrrr!

VIVAAAAHH LAS VEGAS ROLL!

I can't say enough how much I like this sushi joint. The music will make you want to shake your arse, the service is empeciable and the food is amazing.

The only bad thing about it, is the wait time. Other than that, everything in this place makes up for it.

DEFINIATELY CHECK THIS PLACE OUT and try their signature Viva Las Vegas Roll--it's a mouthful!

A trendy sushi place with a nice bar. Good drinks, good food, chill atmosphere.

A must have is the Viva Las Vegas roll. I'm not much of a fan of cream cheese in sushi but it was pretty good!

Not exactly the best sushi in town but I'd go back.

This place can be a great sushi experience, or the worst, depends a lot on when you go.

First of all, their happy hour should be called ecstatic hour, because that's what I am when I get the bill.  Full off tasty sushi and a hearty buzz for a price that shocks me every time.  Now is this classy sushi you're going to get a nice sushi place? No way.  I like to call their happy hour sushi "Rookie Rolls", because they are ideal for those who are just entering the sushi world.  For those sushi vets out there, their nigiri is half off and generally delicious.  That is usually enough to satisfy my advanced sushi taste for the night. Went one time not on happy hour, ya that was a mistake I made one time only.

So if you want to get some Japanese beers, sake (none for me thanks) and some American sushi at a killer price, hit this place up before 7pm.  Otherwise, this place is your standard trendy, American sushi bar you can find all over town.  Some people say, location, location, location.  For Ra it's all about time, time, time.

Some of the worst service ever. It is very frustrating when a server/bartender acts as if they are doing you a favor by taking your order. Our last roll came over an hour after we ordered and the bartender said, "it's like a bonus because I'm pretty sure you were going to leave without even knowing it..." Hey blondie, charging us for a roll and bringing it after we are clearly finished is certainly not a bonus. Overall a poor experience.

The exact replica of the Ra that is on Las Vegas Blvd, next to the Trump Towers in that shopping center, I found myself still drawn to their happy hour 1/2 off deals of Nigiri and Rolls. Along side a tasty sake and beer for $5 on their happy hour menu my producer and I walked out with full stomachs and happy heads just coming under $40, we gave $50 because our waitress was cool.

The fish slices were small, but still not the exact size of the rice so it still had good flavor. The other downside was the sushi bar itself... it was rather high and I felt uncomfortable leaning over my food to eat it. But apparently I was a slow learner being the restaurant was full and the only 2 people at the bar were me and my co worker.

Other than that cool atmosphere, great feeling, great deal. Much more traditional compared to the "tiki" sushi place close to where we were staying at the Ramada.

Enjoy.

You think you like THIS place for sushi? You ain't seen nothin!

Being the sushi fanatic that I am, I wasn't impressed by their presentation of their flavorless rolls or boring appetizers. The Shrimp Tempura roll and the Gojira roll were both bland and were nothin special. The Viva Las Vegas roll saved the meal because it was loaded with crab mix, eel, and shredded lobster. The Tempura Calamari was not up to par -- very artificial/generic and the Sesame Chicken Wings were weak.

Low end, smelly venue that tries to appear upscale. It's a good thing we came here at happy hour because it would not have been worth the dinner price.

Side note: Two out of the three of us got sick after we ate here!

This place is a see and be seen sushi bar, more suited for the people that want to make a connection rather than someone who just wants a good Japanese seafood experience.

I thought the food was OK.  I had a sashimi carpaccio plate that was quite expensive for what I got, which was 6 unevenly sliced pieces of fish in a bed of crunchy things, jalapenos and daikon.   Not bad tasting but it was quite pricey for such a small amount of food.

I also had a crab hand roll.  The nori was soggy.    Nori should never be soggy.

I would try them again to see if this was just a off day, but was not too impressed.

Yay!  Came here for my birthday a couple months back.  I have to say I was a little hesitant at first, by the logo on the outside I prejudged and assumed it was expensive and pretentious.

I was completely wrong.

Awesome happy hour prices!  The waitress was totally sweet and gave me a complimentary creme brulee!  Can't wait to go back, downtown SD has redeemed itself.  Well, at least for now.

First of all, when I read a review and the person says,"I haven't had the chance to try the food here, but it looks very tasty!"  How can they justify giving this place a 3 star review?  Enough of that.

This is my second time eating at RA in San Diego, and my second experience was just like my first, wonderful.  The food at RA is awesome, the atmosphere is very hip, and the service is great.  We went during happy hour which is the true deal here.  $1 Sake, half price on all the popular sushi selections, and seating was easily attained.  For 5 people, stuffed to the point of giddiness, our bill was right at $80.  I've been to some sushi places that would have cost us more than $80 for just my wife and me.

A lot of reviews recommended the Viva Las Vegas Roll, I too share the enthusiasm for this roll.  It was delicious.  The Lobster Mango Roll was to die for if you like mango.  The California Rolls were great too.  In all honesty, everything we ordered was great, even the dessert.

Do yourself a favor and try RA Sushi Bar during happy hour.  You'll save yourself some money, enjoy some great food, and you'll be surrounded by beautiful people (I didn't hit on this too much, but the waitresses, hostesses and patrons were all very good looking.  Plenty of eye candy to fill up on.)

Looks like I'm gonna buck the trend and give them a higher rating than most. The reason is more likely because I am still a sushi noob and don't know any better plus I tend to keep things simple.

I really enjoyed my experience @ RA during my last visit to San Diego. We were strolling along in the Gaslamp when the hunger pangs struck. My cousin suggested sushi and after that, it was all I could think of and it was all I wanted. So, I asked him where we should go. Since we were right next to the Yardhouse at the time, he suggested RA. Who am I to question a local right? So, we sauntered in and requested a table.

First, not that it matters much, but the hostess was not hard on the eyes. But, as is the case in these situations, she knew it and kinda had a tude. She seemed more focused on adjusting the bra holding her bags of fun then seating us but no matter. What guy doesn't enjoy watching a woman adjust herself right? So, I'll forgive the tude for the trade off of a show.

So, after we were seated our server comes over and takes our drink order. Since I love saki, we asked for a bottle tout de suite and she delivered as requested. After bottle one (which, BTW for $11 we got 9 shots out of, not bad...not bad at all), we order another and then place our sushi order.

Again, I'm still very new to the world of uncooked fish so we kept it super simple. Spicy tuna rolls, the Tunacado,  and the crunchy shrimp tempura roll.  They were all super fresh and tasted delicious. My favorite was the Tunacado. I like simple things. Nothing to me was better than a nice fresh slice of tuna paired with a big slice of avocado with a great little dipping sauce. Delicious.

All of that was enough for 4 people and came in under $60 (with 2 bottles of saki no less). Between the decor (modern, cool vibe), our server (great suggestions, prompt and fun) and the food we had a great time. I would def go there again if I'm down in the Gaslamp looking for a bite.

Ra definitely has ambiance.  It was so funny, my date was talking about Beastie Boys being one of his favorite bands, and lo and behold, they were playing as we walked up.  The music the entire time was entertaining, upbeat, but not obtrusive...thumbs up.

We stumbled upon Ra after walking away from the ridiculously long line at Sushi Deli.  We were able to get right in at the sushi bar.

The food was, for the most part, great.  It's always a crap shoot ordering rolls sometimes.  If you're not completely familiar with a roll, or if you're ordering something new, you're never really sure if it's going to be flavors you'll enjoy.  We ended up ordering the Catapillar roll and Mango Lobster roll.  The Mango roll got better the more you ate, but it was a bit sweet for both mine and my date's taste.

The Catapillar roll was okay.  I was the one who ordered it, forgetting that it sits on a sweet sauce in most restaurants.  Again, a little too sweet for our palates.  Again...not Ra's fault.

The salmon sashimi tasted fresh.  My only "small" complaint was that the middle of a few pieces was very close to a frozen state.  Just a little too cold to be melt in your mouth sashimi.

The sake was good.  The waitress, according to my date, was cute (I think it's funny).  The rolls were good considering they were just erroneously ordered by two people with saltier desires.  The ambiance was excellent...I'd definitely recommend Ra.

I can't speak for the price as I never saw the bill.  Dating a gentleman has it's perks.

Cool decor, hot waitresses, mediocre overpriced sushi!  Well I guess everywhere can't be perfect.  It's not the worst sushi I have ever had but sadly I had comparable stuff at the San Jose airport while waiting for a flight (the stuff at the airport was probably cheaper).  I would go back for drinks but I wouldn't drop another $50 and still be hungry again.

Came in on a Saturday night. Around.. 8:30... The place was packed. We sat at the bar (hubby and me), and ordered drinks. They serve all the basics but with a twist (ie everything has saki in it and all the drinks are great.) Finally got seated.. at first they wanted to put us in this crappy table in the corner. I denied it and requested the prime table in the center. They gave it to us :) And even though they had just sat that server like 4 times in a row... he was extremely nice and attentive and even though he was totally busy, he didn't rush us at all.

Ordered the tsunami punch.. for two.. but ended up drinking it by myself. This has got to be the best most economic way to go. 60oz mai tai type drinking for $12??? Hell ya! I was nice and happy after that.

Yelpers didn't let me down when we ordered the Via Las Vegas roll. Extremely good! I had the Crazy Monkey Roll too. Quite delicious. I mean really good. Not sure how long we waited for food though, but I was occupied with my punch!

By time we finished dinner and desert, it was past 10 and some other friends were meeting us downtown. We told them to meet us at Ra. And did anyone bother to notice their Reverse Happy Hour? Like $3 tsunami punches, appletinis, $1 saki, $4 saki bombs??? Yes please.

By time we left at closing the night was a success already.

I could see the cons here though ---- very busy, club like scene. Don't go on Saturdays if you want a romantic dinner for two. Go to have fun! And know what to expect when you get there.

Get the Vegas Roll!

Dropped in to Ra last night around 5 for some Happy Hour half price sushi and apps.  Service was awful to say the least.  One waitress had the entire bar section and possibly more talbes.  Not sure why they weren't expecting a larger crowd during Holiday Season.  The food was fantastic as always except for one item.  I tried the crispy tuna roll or something like that and it tasted similar to hash browns from Burger King.  I will never eat that again.  Definitely will go back for Happy Hour for the prices and food.

Eeeeeee...  Noooo...  Ra is "sushi for dummies".  The atmosphere reminds me of the Hard Rock without any of the quality.  This is mainly a place to go to watch the circus acts of over-primped douchebags and douchebaguettes overpaying for umbrella drinks and cheap raw fish.  There are usually about half a dozen teenage girls in glittery clubbing attire on their cell phones in front of this place, and they never look happy.

Who would have thunk I could like sushi so much now?!?

I think this place really reeled me into the sushi world. That Vegas Roll fills a special place in my tummy that makes me yearn for more...and makes me curious as to the possiblity of other types of sushi that could maybe tickle my fancy! I tried the Spicy Tuna roll here...excellent! The Caterpillar...excellent! Spider Roll...SUPER EXCELLENT!!! I just can't get enough of it!

Really this place broke me in! I'm not a big sake fan...but sake here is a dollar. They have a great Sushi happy hour. It's not like some of the other places that have a sushi happy hour but don't have a good variety of sushi on that menu. The service is good although it could get a little crowded at times and the atmosphere and music is awesome!

I love this place because I really love the service and the food is excellent...so is the presentation of the food!!! It doesn't smell like a typical sushi bar (fishy) which is a big plus...and you can definitely hop from sushi to a night club right after without feeling too bloated!

Definitely stop by and try this place out if you're a sushi fan! Especially during Happy Hour! You'll LOVE IT just as much as I do!!!

Wow!

What a disappointment.  For months, I would look longingly at the people seemingly enjoying their bites of sushi and think...man, I should be doing that.

Today was the day.  My co-worker and I took a late lunch, and started heading to Horton Plaza.  Then a wave of excitement and impulse hit me and I thought that yeah...let's splurge a little.

One look at the Lunch Specials convinced me that this was the place and now was the time.  We walk in and the place is half empty.  The late lunch hour (1:30pm) was probably the cause.

Looking around, there were a lot of beautiful people eating their food.

This was going to be good!

We ordered: I opted for the Unagi Bowl with Miso Soup ($8.50) and she got the Spicy Tuna Roll from the bar (also $8.50).  Good prices, good start.

My soup came out and it was pretty good.  Not the best, but a passable Miso Soup.

Then my Unagi Bowl came out.  Presentation was decent, with the grilled unagi atop a bowl of rice and cucumbers. We waited for the my dining companions food...and waited...and waited.  Ten minutes later, it came.

She seemed to like her sushi.  So they get a point for that.

My food on the other hand left a lot to be desired.

The best thing about my dish was the cubed cucumbers.  That says a lot considering that unagi is one of my favorite things in the world.  The sauce was also plainly average.  The rice, was decent.  But it's hard to mess up rice, right?

The unagi seemed a bit under-cooked.  Worse, excess ungrilled skin!  After a while, I started getting disgusted with the thought of eating this  gross grey goo.  I had to use my hands and de-skin the eel myself.

I couldn't even finish the bowl because I couldn't wrap my head around eating this underwater freshwater serpent.

I hope Ra has not ruined my love/ate relationship with the delish unagi...

Ra = fail

If you are looking for traditional sushi this is not the place for you. The rolls are "americanized" and nothing tastes fishy. I am sure its not the most quality fish, but it tastes good!!!!!!!!! It has a variety of rolls and most of them are very tasty. The atmosphere is fun and the happy hour is great. On Sundays some of the rolls are half priced which makes a great deal.

There seem to be a lot of Sushi places in the area, but we tried Ra. Having tickets to a show we didn't have a lot of time, so we at a the Bar, now this is a BAR, like alcohol bar, not sushi bar. Loud music, tv's with sports on.

So this was not a leisurely sushi dinner, but a quick before show meal. We got the Rainbow roll and a fried California Roll. Both were good, the CA roll was better than most sushi places I have been to, the Rainbow roll was pretty standard.

So many places to try in the area I was not impressed enough to go back to RA.

A few things you need to know about me before you read the following review:

Q. Have I ever been to Ra Sushi Bar?
A. Never.

Q. Do I like sushi?
A. ... Ummm, I don't hate it

Q. Do I enjoy drinking?
A. Only all the time.

With a hankering for some Saturday afternoon boozing, I headed downtown to find the perfect place to get my drink on. What I found, was Ra, and it's happy hour specials. Regardless of what other people think of Ra, a place that has happy hour from 3-7, Monday - Saturday, is a-ok in my book.

Anyway, we walked in and were able to walk right on over to the bar and have a seat. The drinks were pretty cheap, $2 Bud Lights, $3 Stellas and well drinks, and $4 Kirins. And 1/2 priced appetizers and rolls too. You really can't ask for more.... well, maybe some better sushi. The crunchy roll wasn't all that good.

Still, there's a few things that I really liked about this place. The place has a cool look (red and black theme), there was good music playing (albeit a bit on the loud side) and they had sports playing on the tv's in the bar area. And the hostesses and the waitresses were all hot.

What it all comes down to was that I had a pleasant time at Ra. I got a really good buzz, had some decent food, good convo, good scenery... good times. I'm sure I'll end up coming back. BTW, the saki sangria wasn't that good either.

3.5 stars.

My bf and I came here b/c we wanted to eat some sushi on our trip to san diego. This place was definitely a great idea. Even better b/c it's an even greater deal if you go during happy hours (btw 3-7pm). some of the rolls we had and that I enjoyed were:

LAS VEGAS ROLL
CRISPY TUNA ROLL
UNAGI ROLL

There sashimi was ok. Not like melt in your mouth goodness, but it wasn't horrible. during happy hour, this place is a great deal b/c of the $3 well drinks and 1/2 off certain rolls. I wouldn't go during regular hours.

Ra was a pleasant surprise.  Their food is Gaslamp-average; it doesn't taste quite as good as you think it should, given the location and hipster pandering look of the place.  The service is adequate.

Average, adequate...  pleasant surprise?

Yes, because Ra won't break the bank.  It passes the freshness test; I've not encountered anything going bad in my visits.   You'll get decent fish as well as a handful of "other asian dishes," for less than the other Gaslamp places that are trying for the a-list sushi clientele.

In that sense, it's one of the better options in its category downtown.
