R & G might very well be some of the best Chinese food I've had in recent memory. I had lunch with the family here a couple weekends ago and was pretty impressed with the spread. The seafood was all very fresh, the battered and fried crab had the most delicate crust, the prawns were sweet and perfectly cooked. We had this rice stuffed chicken dish that was just insane, I've never seen something like that before, the skin was crispy and the chicken filled with rice and other goodies. It was all super impressive. The sweet and sour pork spareribs are probably the best I've ever had. Our family friends picked up the bill, so I don't know what the damage was, but I do know it was well worth whatever they paid.

Stopped in for a late lunch. Peeked around the menu and saw it wasn't too expensive. Took a seat in their cool basement dining room. I heard lots of conversations, none in the language in which I am fluent. This is a good sign.

Smoked Salmon and avocado egg rolls. You only get two, but they are fantastic. I don't think the flavor needs to be described... smoked salmon and avocado in an egg roll... yeah.

We got one order of the three treasures (shrimp stuffed eggplant, shrimp stuffed peppers, and big chunks of tofu all in a black bean sauce.) Not too heavy and loads of flavor. I almost thought the shrimp was something else due to the hearty texture, and that isn't meant as a bad thing.

One order of shrimp chow mein hong kong style. Good noodles, tasty sauce, nothing too out of the ordinary though.

I would be back in a heartbeat to try the salt and pepper crab if it were a little cheaper... and I lived in the same state.

R & G Lounge reminds me of all the great Chinese/Vietnamese places I grew up on in Orange County such as Seafood World, Dragon Phoenix Palace, etc.  With that said, I think this place is expensive for what it is.  The food was good, but nothing special.  I ordered the, fried rice, special beef and walnut shrimp.  The fried rice was kind of plain and the walnut shrimp a bit dry.  I did thoroughly enjoy the special beef though.

The one great thing about this place?  Decently priced cognac (although they wouldn't let us have any of the Louis XIII unless we bought the bottle).  We had about 3 glasses of the Hennessy XO and 3 of the Remy XO and it was under 120.  $20 a pop isn't too bad.

Like most Asian eateries in the City... its good, but only for SF.

As a China Town community member and a closet Anthony Bourdain fan, I was excited to hear my roommate had selected the famous R&G Lounge for his birthday dinner. I had read about this place many times and watched lines form in front on your average Tuesday night, but I had never had the opportunity to go.

Saturday night, we arrived at 8pm and were quickly seated upstairs at a large round table for 6. The birthday boy Mat, quickly put the other roomie Marty to work at ordering. He had been to China and knew better than us about what we HAD to have. The waiters were speedy with the drinks, answered all our questions and were happy to store the birthday cupcakes I made in their fridge until the right time.

Moments later and a few cocktails deep, our soup arrived. Chicken and mashed corn chowder with lots of chili sauce! We scarfed every last drop down and awaited the main event. Next came mushu veggies, mongolian beef, an entire duck and the infamous salt and pepper crab. Marty demonstrated how to make the duck into handy little sandwiches while the rest of us went deep on the crab. We all became silent as we contently snapped crab legs in half and dug in for the sweet delicious meat. It was one of those meals where you are so full you almost feel sick, but you continue to eat because you don't know when you'll ever have something so good again.

After we all "wet-napped" off and the plates were cleared, our waiters brought out the cupcakes and joined us in singing Happy Birthday. It was the perfect meal and I made sure to hand off a cupcake to all the staff on our way out the door. I'm definitely coming back with the family...and fasting in preparation this time.

Although I don't usually like Chinese food, this place is amazing.  Their specialty are the fried crabs, but pretty much all the food I've tried here has been good.

The best was when we came to visit this restaurant as part of a big group.  There was food coming out for 2 or 3 hours until we couldn't even see straight :)  It was all absolutely delicious.

Did I really forget to review this place?

Hey buddy, 5 stars all the way. You get what you pay for. The food is absolutely fantastic... here is my list of what I think are the best dishes there...

1) Salt & Pepper Crab - the coating of the crab is mouthwatering... if you're one of those people who don't like fried foods... don't worry, you'll like it anyway.

2) Three Treasure - it's pretty much flash fried tofu with shrimp stuffed inside it. The dish is in a black bean sauce and it also comes with eggplant and peppers (both stuffed w/ shrimp). I can't seem to come here without ordering this dish.

3) Soy Sauce Chicken - don't let the name fool you, it's not just soy sauce. It's actually a semi sweet sauce that they use with this steamed, perfectly cooked chicken. Healthy dish to say the least.

4) Walnut Shrimp - ok ok, I know this seems very americanized but trust me, their walnut shrimp is better than others.

5) R&G Special Beef - something about the sweet sauce... :)

6) Dried Scallops Egg White Fried Rice - this is the best place to get this dish. Nowhere else makes it as tasty as this R&G. Trust me on this... it's got the perfect seasoning - not too salty like other places. The egg white is cooked well so that it's got some texture to it, not soggy. It's a must when you visit here!

There are so many other dishes to list, but those are pretty much my R&G staple. Try it! You won't be disappointed!

It was  family event- My sisters Wedding Banquet Chinese Style.  We had the upstairs which held approx 85 people.  The service was quick and on T, maybe b/c we made them run a few minutes late. Every few minutes it seemed we had a nother dish floating on the lazy susan.  I loved the Salt and Pepper Crab!  Yummy!  Too bad it was sooo...... messy- but when has crab even been easy to maneuver.  Lots of cracking and poking but worth every lick of the finger tips.
The duck and white buns with hoisien sauce was fabulous nice and tender, and the pepper steak and scallops also delicious.

A over all great experience- but with out a big party- not sure I would want to wait in their long line out the door- so get a reservation!

Having seen so many positive reviews here, I decided to give it a try.
Well the experience is not quite pleasant. Let me simply put it this way, if you want authentic Chinese food, this is definitely not the place to go. We tried three dishes including the Linnan beef, all of which are too sweet.

Overall I am very disappointed given all the positive reviews here.

Going to R&G was a last minute idea of my date and it was a great idea.  Since I didn't get a chance to research it, I didn't know the crab was the dish to try, but I think we did pretty well in our choices.

We ordered the R&G Special Beef, stir-fried top choice sliced beef with the chef's special sauce, which was nice and tender, a little sweet.

Our other dish was the Three Treasures with Black Bean Sauce, tofu, eggplant and hot peppers stuffed with shrimp meat in a black bean sauce.  The eggplant was tender and flavorful, the tofu a little salty and the hot peppers were hot enough that I couldn't eat them, although I did have some of the shrimp stuffed inside.

The wine list is okay, not much of a selection for by the glass, but I did have a nice Sauvignon Blanc.  The funniest part about the dinner was the tea, I thought the scent was nice and familiar, and it was LIPTON tea!!!  Back to the days of my childhood, I haven't had that in forever.  I did tell him I wanted comfort food, lol.

I read a book called The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, which goes into its search for the best chinese restaurant in the world, and R&G was noted as the best in San Francisco.

Best is of course subjective - the food is definitely very very good. However, I think part of what makes a great Chinese food experience is also grittiness and value. R&G lacks that piece. Tourists and the non adventurous I'm sure will be fine with that.

4 stars for great food, nice ambiance, and high prices.

salt and pepper crab is probably the best dish on the menu.

After a serious disappointment from eating crab earlier this week, I was craving for some good, tasty and FRESH crab. Being such a little spoiled brat, my bf agreed to take me here :P

We ordered one whole salt and pepper crab, half an order of peking duck, garlic veggies and an order of honey spareribs-- way too much food for just the both of us! The total + tips = $115.00 and we left with 4 boxes to go. (possibly our dinner for 2m night!)

The crab from R&G definitely hit the spot and satisfied my "crab craving" for the next 3 months!  Everything was delicious from the beginning to end and service was right on!

Salt & Pepper Crab.  'Nuff said.

I could go by myself and polish off one of those suckers alone.

My only gripe is if you got handicapped folk in your party, and they seat you downstairs, they don't have any type of service ramp or elevator.   A tad pricey for less-then-average portions, but everything is delicious.

Oh yeah, I saw Yan Can Cook here too :D!  He was eating, not cooking.

This is a late review, considering I can't remember if it's been weeks or months since I ate here. I lack a day job, so the days kind of blur into each other, and it's not so easy to guess season by the weather these days. But I can still say with jubilance that this is the stuff! When my date asked me what I'd feel like eating that night, I responded without thinking, "Crab." And crab is what I got.

The wait was long, but the salt and pepper crab was huge and finger-licking good. We toyed with the idea of "Tender Greens in Supreme Broth" (sidenote: I just can't get enough of some dish titles, other favorites at various restaurants being "Tasty Broth" and "Princess Dish"), but decided on eggplant and a few other things instead, all delicious. Honestly, we could just have ordered the crab and it would have been more than enough to satiate both our hunger and my lust for crab (previously believed to be insatiable).

We obviously came nowhere near finishing, but I had a really yummy lunch and dinner the next day.

I will say that I was severely tempted to get the shark fin soup, because it was a long-standing favorite of mine prior to reading article after article on damaged ecosystems. Happily, my moral values prevailed. I bet it would have been so dericious, though.

Service was good, although from what I hear, it can be hit-and-miss. I wish I had another birthday to celebrate this year so I could come back for their banquet. With a group of people. To watch me eat.

You know you're at a good Chinese restaurant when 1) the majority of the diners are Chinese and 2) the place is so loud you can barely hear yourself talk.

I've been to R&G a few times now with family and out-of-town friends and it is definitely one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in SF. The food is authentic and tasty (especially the fresh seafood)! Try the Special Beef, Salt and Pepper Crab (Anthony Bourdain did!) and the Geoduck sashimi. This place is popular with locals and tourists alike so be prepared to wait. The food makes it all worth it!

TIP: Parking in Chinatown is next to impossible but you can park at the garage across from the Hilton (1/2 block away) and R&G will validate (good for 2 hrs).

R & G Lounge is Reliably Good.  Of all the times I've been here and all the good meals though, this most recent visit was probably the best and most memorable meal I've had here to date.

Our party ordered the obligatory dishes -- salt and pepper crab and R & G special beef -- along with Peking duck (two ways), a whole deep fried crispy chicken stuffed with sticky rice, a noodle dish, and vegetable dish.  The salt and pepper crab was delicious, as always.  I find it to be comparable, if not maybe better, to the salt and pepper crab they serve at Koi Palace in Daly City.  I believe this was the first time I've tried the Peking duck, R & G special beef, and crispy chicken stuffed with sticky rice from here; all three were excellent.

This restaurant is always a great small or large group dinner spot which gives you an opportunity to try the abundance of signature dishes they offer.  Service is usually quite good and attentive even though you would normally expect service to be a little cold at Chinese restaurants.

R & G is easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in SF if you are willing to spend a little more coin than you normally would shell out at other smaller, dingier Chinese restaurants up the hill.

This is our second visit to R&G.  The service was great, and the taste of the dishes was good.  But, overpriced for what we got.  Fried rice was $13.  At our local chinese takeout, the same thing is $6.  We ordered the pepper crab, whole seabass and 1/2 Peking duck - again, the flavors were good, but pretty spendy and not much food for 4 people.

Just like alot of super popular places, the hype is bigger than the reality.

This was another place I tried while visiting SF recently since my bf's friend recommended it.  Being Chinese and accustomed to eating awesome Chinese food with my folks, I had pretty high expectations.  R&G sorta lived up to them.

As a half Cantonese chick, I couldn't not start off the meal with a soup. So we ordered the seafood soup.  It was pretty good.

Got the deep-fried crab since that's apparently their specialty.  I normally stay away from crab since it's too annoying to eat, but, if it's their specialty, then I have to try it, right?  What can I say about the crab...well, it was certainly deep-fried, and it was fresh crab.  Was it mind-blowing?  No.  Perhaps I'm just not a crab lover...just crabby sometimes.

Also ordered the traditional fried shrimp dish with mayo sauce and candied walnuts since that's the man's fave dish.  Also not the best I've had, but definitely not bad.

Final dish was supposed to be stir-fried pea shoots (can't eat all that fried stuff without any greeny goodness), which is one of my faves, but the grouchy Chinese man came by during our meal to tell us they ran out.  So we went with the Chinese broccoli, which came out cut into pieces (not normal), and it was filled with stems and no leaves.  WTF?  This place was seriously trying to undermine my ability to have some kinda of healthy dish. ;op

Would I come back here?  Probably not, especially when there are so many other places in SF's Chinatown to try.

Came here today with my mother and my grandpa.

We ordered the Salmon and Avocado Egg Roll, Peking Duck, Salt & Pepper Crab, and Mu Shu Vegetable.

The Salmon Avocado Egg Rolls were amazingggggggg. The crab was just okay and I couldn't eat the duck.

The Mu Shu took forever to come out and they gave me pork mu shu! They fixed it asap though. Their pancakes looked really good at first but they got dry and flakey quick.

Best part is that you get 2 hours of free parking so our parking was free. Whoohoo. Oh and they give you biodegradable take out boxes!

I had the pleasure of a free lunch at work, and my coworker promptly walked us down the street to R&G.
I liked the glass art mural upstairs near our table alot, really added to the atmosphere. Which I would like to add there was not alot of, no music, simple decor (besides the mural in the back) and alot of business casual eaters in on their lunch breaks.

I ordered the cashew chicken lunch special, which was cheap and pretty ordinary for Chinese food in the city. I have heard the salt and pepper crab and the walnut shrimp are worth a second trip. However I don't really see myself coming back here again.

It wasn't bad, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype. I left feeling like that time in high school when I really didn't want to go and went anyway because everyone said it was  going to  be cool and it turned out to be nothing special.

Comfortable and western friendly. Ordered abalone and was very disappointed. Too much sauce hid the taste but it should have been sauted -- no self respecting chef would have done that to abalone. Smoked duck was good but no veggies. Had to ask for rice. Fried calamari was good.

The crab looked good. Wish I had ordered that.

Still looking for a good Chinese restaurant in San Francisco.

I've been going here for years, but have been going with a smaller group, so we normally just get the salt n pepper crab and a couple of other dishes. I went recently for my birthday and was able to try out a bunch of different dishes.

Environment - We were given a table in the back behind the bar. Almost like a party room with another birthday party there. It was loud, crazy, people were laughing. Great environment for groups. The place was packed on a Friday night with groups of people waiting outside the restaurant. Recommendation - Make reservations ahead of time if you're coming on a weekend night.

Food - ok, we don't come here for the service, it all comes down to the food. Here are the items we ordered.

Salt n Pepper Crab - As always, delicious. The only problem I had with this experience was having to share one with 11 other people. I did enjoy every bit of mine and I love the fact that they also give you the head with the insides all deep fried. Yummy.

R&G Special Beef - Very tasty. A little on the sweet side, but provided a good balance to the other tastes out.

Westlake Minced Beef Soup - Very good. Didn't even need to add seasoning to the soup. We ordered 2 orders for 12 people and that was just enough for 1 bowl per person.

Black Mushrooms and Mustard Greens - Probably my favorite veggie dish of the night. The mushrooms were big, soft, and delicious.

Mixed Vegetables deluxe - Good to get your veggie dishes in, but there wasn't anything special about this dish. Felt like something I could easily cook at home.

Steamed rock cod - delicous! we ordered it steamed with the soy sauce and it was very soft and not overcooked.  However with the fish being so large, I did have comments from other people where it wasn't consistently cooked across the fish. Still, it wasn't too salty and felt healthy. :)

Beef brisket with turnip - This tasted just like my mom's oxtail soup. Broth and everything was very similar. The brisket was very tasty and tender and the daikon was a nice bonus (although a potato and some carrots would've been a bigger bonus).

Honey spareribs - Pretty tasty, a little sweet. Personally I prefer the Peking spareribs from Yuet Li.

Geoduck Sashimi - Eh, none of us were really feeling it. It was a little harder than I expected, with the consistency of a squid or octopus but with a more fishy taste to it. They also included a deep fried geoduck which was VERY tasty (although I only got a piece) because they used the same batter as the salt n pepper crab.

The drinks were a bit expensive ($10 for the lychee martini at a Chinese restaurant?), but having the bar is nice while you're waiting. My friend even came by and pulled me out of the dinner table to take a birthday shot which was nice.

They came out with the birthday cake and it was nice that they pulled it to the back and cut it for us. I never knew if they charged us a cake cutting fee, but pretty soon afterward a neighboring table also had a birthday cake. This is a great place for birthdays!

Best thing of all, we went to a club where friends were buying me shot after shot and many drinks. Miraculously I was able to survive and not be sick the next day. I attribute that to the meal that we had at R&G Lounge providing a solid base for soaking up the alcohol. :)

One of the best Chinese restaurants in the city.  They are pricey, but it's worth it.  Can't miss the salt & pepper crab, they're signature dish!  Other Chinese restaurants have tried to copy this dish, but don't even come close!  They also have great varieties of other dishes.  The picture menu is great for the many tourists that dine at this place.

Be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation because this place is always packed.

I came here for our 4 year anniversary and while the salt and pepper crab was pretty great, the rest was meh.

the rice was hecka dry and the salt and pepper calamari was WAY WAY too salty (do NOT get) and the other kind of craby (garlic and pepper?) was also WAY WAY too salty too.  they also sat us in the seats right next to the bar and the bathroom which was not nice.

At more than $100 for two, i expect great seats...

the service was pretty good though.

A friend of mine suggested R&G's for lunch. Initially, I thought, chinese food.. hmm, probably the typical. I was pleasantly surprised. Cleanly with great service. And the food was delish! You can usually judge a chinese restaurant based on the "brocolli beef" dish. Simple dish but definitely a tell taler.. the broccoli was crisp and didn't mush in with the beef. Each flavor distinct.

In any case, I was impressed by lunch and decided to take my father here for his 70th birthday dinner. A must order is the the special beef, and the salt and pepper crab!! Sooo tasty, lightly battered, packed with flavor.  This place is great for a couples as well as larger parties.

Want to give this place 3.5 stars.... prices have gone up, and lunch items seem to get more and more bland. It's a bit of a factory... that dim sum pace without the quality. Better at dinner, but lunch items although fresh, really lack spirit. I'd hit Hunan Home's or Great Eastern. Maybe because it's only a block and a half from the Financial District why they still get so much traffic.

The salt and pepper crab is out of this world! Every time i'm in there tourist are ordering the usual, American style Asian dishes egg rolls, chow mein. I make it a point to tell them what to order and love watching the reactions.
Sometimes a wait and parking (non lot) is a hassle. Worth it. Great for any occasion, I actually came here for Thanksgiving a few years back and had a great time.

This is one of the best meals I've had since I moved up to the city 3 years ago.

We started with a bottle of the Hess Cab and some Hot and Sour Soup. We immediately ordered the Black Cod since the waiter told us it takes 45 minutes to get. We obviously went to try the crab after seeing Anthony Bourdaine take down a Salt and Pepper fried crab on "No Reservations".

The crab was out of this world, despite it not being crab season. The waiter told us we had to eat the batter while biting into the crab meat and he was right. The batter is lightly fried and tastes like a butter-pepper-salt combo. Unreal when taking that bite with crab meat and doesn't overwhelm the taste of the fresh crab. We ate every last bite.

Also amazing was the black cod. It came out SO juicy and flavorful- it rivaled the crab in favorite entree. Had a great texture and moist taste.

We also ordered the Golden Supreme Fried Rice which was slightly spicy and the R&G Special Beef. We then got some Mu-Shu pancakes and made little burritos out of this combo (not my idea) but UNREAL with some chili sauce.

The rice was great- nice and fluffy and no oily taste. The beef had a slightly sweet taste but was tender and had good texture.

All in all, what a great meal. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu

R&G is still one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the city.

Celebrated Eric's dad's birthday here tonight and we couldn't have picked a more suitable restaurant. We had the $498 banquet dinner for 10. Cold plate with BBQ pork, beef, jelly fish and deep fried spring roll started us off. Of all the places and of all dishes being served, I was so surprised how good the BBQ pork was. Tender, flavorful, and not too fatty. We moved right onto the shark fin soup. Good shark fin does not need vinegar (it is only used to mask bad/faux shark fin) and this one needed none. The main dishes included my favorites: salt & pepper crab and back cod. Lobsters, beef fillet with scallops, mustard greens with shiitake mushroom, and crispy chicken filled our bellies. We ended the meal with a great red bean dessert. Creamy and flavorful, it is not like the generic kind you get at other Chinese restaurants. Since it was a birthday celebration, our waiter brought us a steamed basket of longevity buns.

Perfect 60th birthday celebration thanks to R&G!

Reliably good to excellent food... Needs to improve their service.

Things to try:

salt & pepper crab, R&G's signature dish;

vegetarian abalone -- taste and texture just like the real thing;

pipa tofu -- these are patties, in the shape of Madeleines, made of mashed tofu, shrimp, scallions and eggs. They're fried then coated with a light sauce. Even people who don't like tofu will love these. They cost $2 each. 1 or 2 per person is about right. You may need to order in advance.

when in season, spot prawns prepared in the quintessential Cantonese manner--minimally cooked and with just a hint of soy to bring out the natural sweet flavor of the prawns.

If you come here for a banquet, make sure they schedule enough time for you to enjoy your meal. We reserved a private room for 15 people. When we arrived, we were told that we had to vacate the room in 2 hours as there was another party coming in. After an hour and a half, the staff was trying to push us out so that they could set up for the next party. We had a 10 course meal and felt very rushed and I had difficulty enjoying the meal because of this. We had people in our party from out of town and from out of the country, and we really wanted to spend more time with them. I've eaten here many times and the food has always been excellent. I'll give it 5 stars for food and deduct one star for service.

Chinatown Heaven! This is the place to visit in SF amidst all other chinese restaurants in the miles and miles of Chinatown.  The garlic deep friend crab is, again, Heaven!  This totally made our trip to SF hailing from the east coast.  The Ox tail soup is out of this world! Tender and juicy, reminded me of Ox tail soup from Kapiolani Coffee Shop in Hawaii.  Make a reservation or call ahead because the wait is long!!!  Come hungry and eat with your fingers.  Super delicious!

As a tourist, I asked many local. Which is the best Chinese restaurant in ChinaTown? They all pointed me to R&G Lounge. This place was crowded & reservation was recommended. I ordered a stream fish, some veggy & a salt & pepper crab. The fish was fresh & delicious. The crab was  huge. It take more than 2 persons to finish it. I strongly recommend everyone to try the crab. It is the best in town. Over all the food is as authentic as in Hong Kong. I will definitely come back for more.

I used to go to R & G all the time for lunch when I was working in SF but I havent been back in a while.  I took my friend from LA to R & G reminiscing how good it used to be....
we went on a friday night. no reservation.  we waited about 30 minutes or so to be seated, not bad for R&G. I ordered salt and pepper crab and the R&G special beef, those were my two favorite dishes.  it was as good as i remembered it...  their honey walnut prawns is good as well, but the salt & pepper crab is a must if you go to R&G... i think the bill was around $60 without tip for the S&P crab and special beef, but it was definately worth every penny.

I've been to R&G many times over the years.  It's high on the list of clean Chinese restaurants to take company, including the Chinese parents when they visit.  All the food I've had there has been good and not too greasy (a big plus as far as Chinese joints go).  Salt & pepper crab is indeed tasty.  However, I'm not going to pile on the superlatives because frankly I think this place is overpriced for what you get and not that amazing compared to places outside of the City.  If this is the best San Francisco can do, then I'll go to LA for real Chinese.  And my OC-based parents agree.  "No more of that R&G Lounge next time we visit," they said.  "Too expensive for just ok food!"

Whenever I get, "What is your favorite cuisine?"  question, I always tell them, " I loveee Chinese food, and I mean authentic Chinese food!".

Being a native in San Francisco, I gotta admit there aren't many great Chinese restaurants out there that can compare to restaurants in Canada and Asia, but R &G can.  I must dine at this restaurant at least once a month because it is that good.

The salt and pepper crab is my ultimate favorite( fresh and tasty)! I always order the steak cubes fried with XO sauce because it's so savoring( it's not on the menu).  I honestly think most of their dishes are amazingly great.

Service is always superior assuming that most Chinese restaurants do not go above and beyond.  Twice, I was in a hurry to go somewhere and as many people that were just as much of a hurry as I, they tried to accommodate me as I've explained my situation.  That's a plus!

I don't think I can ever get sick of dining at R&G. See you in a few weeks.

The best authentic Chinese food in the bay area.  My hubby, me and another couple went there on 11-14-09 and the salt and pepper crab was awesome.  My hubby had the oxtail soup and it was delicious.  We also gave thumbs up to the eggplant and spareribs dishes.  Next time we will order the stuff chicken we saw other customers eating.  Also, the crab is meant to be ate by two people enough to share.  I am a stickler on customer service and it was excellent.  You also will love the bar a lot of top shelf treats to engage in.

If there is one COCKROACH, there are a thousand COCKROACHES in the walls!!!

YELPERS ... BEWARE!!!!
Check out the photo we posted... you can see the leg.

I use to work in pest control and most of my clients were restaurants.  I can assure you not every restaurant has roaches.  However this one does and the management's attitude towards roaches reflects how use they are to seeing them run around that place.  They treat the roaches as if they were the ones picking up the bill not me!
( salt and pepper crab, special beef, peking duck )

Growing up in the city I have had the opportunity to try many places in around San Francisco and this place is no different from the rest. I've been coming here for a while with some friends even before Anthony Bourdain raved about this place and I can tell you there are some mixed reactions. First off this place has gone downhill over the course of the past couple years. Before I moved to Long Beach I would easily give this place 4 stars but now I find the foods overly greasy and salty. Like the MSG kind also. Granted the crab here is still by far one of the best dishes but to be honest I don't want to come all the way out to Chinatown just to have crab made in a special way. The remodeling of the place has made the interior look nicer for sure but overall I would have to say try this place out only at your on risk.

For the most part I find that some of the prices have inflated but to be honest I can't do anything about it due to our poor economy and all. Service now a days for people who look young is simple frustrating. Long waits for our food and waiting for a simple glass of water made out experience even worse. Just because a celeb makes a place look great, doesn't mean you should actually go there. But if you prefer the boob tube over a friend's advice then by all means go and check it out. But don't come complaining after you see what this place is all about.

Good but pricey food.

Most importantly, the place has cockroaches. Need I say more?

Sigh. If you insist. My coworkers came here for lunch one day and saw two huge cockroaches run across the floor. The waiter quickly stepped on one of them right next to a dining couple while the other one scurried away. This means that there is still at least one big cockroach in this restaurant. It probably reproduced already. Gross.

Heard about this place and decided to check it out while I was around in the city.

Scrumptious!  My mouth and stomach were smiling in unison by the time I finished with the giant salt and pepper dungness crab fried up in doughy and delicious style.  The guy that cut my hair, (Cory at Picasso), said that at R&G, they always ask for the BIGGEST crabs from the market.  They don't skimp like other Chinese restaurants who might get the 1.5lb crab to pass as 2.  I believe it.

I'm usually not a crab fan, never had it THIS good before, now I'm probably spoiled. I relished munching on the enormous meat filled shoulder of the crab.  Oh yum

The house-special tofu was real, well, "special".  Braised tofu with eggplant and three types of bell peppers.  Sounds like a normal dish right?  I usually find eggplant revolting and bell peppers dull, but R&G cooks these slivers of shrimp INTO the vegetables.  YUM.  I've never had it likes this before.  What a God-send.

We managed to get a seat at 6 for 2 in under ten minutes.  By the time we walked out the door, there were around sixty folks standing at the bar and outside waiting for a seat.  Wow.

Come here at all costs.
