I'm a web developer and tech savvy guy and have done my own taxes for the past 5 years using TurboTax. Being self-employed and owning two businesses, I have a pretty complicated return. (45 pages for 2008!)
TurboTax was easy enough for me to figure out but it took a long time and there was this continual doubt in the back of my mind that I was missing some big tax breaks or possibly making an error.
I decided that for my 2009 return I would hire a tax professional and see how that experience went. I knew that it would cost me some cash versus doing the return myself, but the amount of time it saved and the peace of mind was enough to convince me to give it a shot.
I chose R&G Brenner because they are privately owned, have been in business for a long time, and offered a completely digital experience. I'm in Seattle, my accountant was in New York, but it didn't matter one bit. I was able to email all of my documents to my preparer (Dennis Grogan, who rocks by the way) and communicate via email and one phone call. Talk about a time saver!
Dennis emailed me if he had any questions and I was able to manage the whole process without ever even meeting him in person. He was thorough and completed my tax return in a timely and professional manner.
It's great to have a competent and affordable accountant on my team.
