Hmm... what to do in Santa Barbara Wine Country on a three-day weekend? Wine tasting? Check. Umm, more wine tasting? Double-Check.
Visit Quicksilver Ranch and watch the mini horses rub their dusty bums on the chainlink fence? MINI-CHECK (pun intended).
Not much to do there besides stare at the little buggers, but Dimples has an unfathomable infatuation with midget ponies, so here's one more thing to cross off her list.
Would've visited the ostrich farm, but those skinny-neck feathery freaks scare the bejeezus outta me. Noooooo thank you.
You stop by here for a maximum of 2 minnutes and say "Ahhhh, look at those cute little horses." Then you leave.
But it is strangely fun to see the shrunken little guys walking around on their stubby little legs. Don't miss it!
WoW miniature Horses.
Much like Ostrich Land this place pretty much a What you see is what you get, although my wife and I are horse lovers which may be why I liked this place a lot more. The grounds were absolutely immaculate, quite possibly one of the nicest ranches I've been too. The horses are everywhere and they are incredibly cute. No fee to come onto the property and look, but there really isn't much to do when you're there. Judging from the signs the owners prefer it if you not pet the horses, and they are not to interactive either. If you're in the area and are interested in horses stop by. I was there for about an hour taking it all in, while another group stopped by and was there about 10 minutes.
Fun for the kids, but the kids may get upset there is no petting pen.

Over the weekend, my baby sister finally turned 18.
What did she want to do to celebrate this milestone - register to vote? Smoke a cigarette? Get a nudie mag? Buy a lottery ticket?
Nope. She wanted to see a whole lot of miniature horses. So we all took a mini road trip to Quicksilver Ranch.
The ranch is very close to the main village-y part of Solvang, and there is minimal parking available inside for visitors (just enough for several cars). Once inside, you can walk around and view the horses. It doesn't cost anything to visit, but they have information available on their website regarding tours (by appointment, for at least 20 people, at $3 each).
And those miniature horses are so horrifically cute. They're small and pudgy and I just wanted to hug them all and take them home ... only I couldn't, because they were behind a chainlink fence, and there's no way I can afford to take care of one. And yes, they're even cute when they rub their little horsey tushies on the fence. My sister and I could have spent hours watching the horses graze and swish their tails.
I don't know what else to say, but I loved it here so much and want to go baaaack. So if you like cooing over chubby little horses, this is the place to go.

Miniature horses get five stars from me because they're so flipping adorable. Seriously, I have eight nieces and nephews who have all LOVED staring at these little things tearing around on the grass. And I LOVED not having to tear around on the grass myself after my nieces and nephews. You can get the free show by parking on Alamo Pintado and walking up to the paddocks, but if you're real nice and ask about it, they might show you around the stables too. Mini mini horsies.
