Review from Jonathan T.
Brooklyn, NY
Quercy is a really good stand-by neighborhood French restaurant, the kind of dependable restaurant that every neighborhood should have. We've now been there a couple of times a couple of years apart and had the same very solid experience.
The first time I ate here, I had the boeuf bourgingon, which was easily the best I've had outside France. The second time, I was jonesing for this dish, had it again, and was just as pleased as the first time.
One astonishing thing about Quercy was how organized and efficient they were despite having only one waitress on that night, who was doubling as receptionist. I don't know if they are always this understaffed or if this was an unusual night, but with the help of the head chef, they managed to keep the dishes coming out quickly. The waitress was a bit frazzled, but she stayed on top of everything. We were very impressed, and she was to be commended for keeping this restaurant under control under these tough circumstances. Both she and the head chef performed exemplary service under the conditions.
We will definitely go back to Quercy as soon as we have the chance. It's becoming one of our reliable go-to places in Brooklyn. -

My wife and I came here last minute for our anniversary as we had heard good things about it.
We arrived as they were opening and took advantage of the open tables to claim our spot. We ordered and right from the start, everything seemed to taste kinda, processed. At times, I swear the food tasted or was somehow microwaved at some point in the cooking process. Our dishes had some good flavors, while others seemed quite bland to the point I was salting my dish after every bite.
The chef had personally come out visiting tables and was gracious with us, but I didn't have the heart to tell him that our dishes were mediocre.
I'm not a french cook, but isn't it supposed to be very flavorful with the use of butter and sauces?
Again the chef was very friendly and the staff equally so, but the food just wasn't up to par. I'm gonna place this as a case of, "Just having a bad day." I'd love to come back, but I don't live in the area to drop by. -

I'm surprised reading some of the reviews here. I had such a wonderful experience at Quercy.
An absolutely scrumptious lentil salad dish that was far more tasty than lentil salad sounds. And the cassoulet was beautifully prepared and just right for a cold weather meal. We had an excellent choice of wines and the place was quiet and unhurried, so it was a perfect meeting spot to actually have a conversation and catch up with a friend.
Looking forward to going back! -

I'm shocked at some of the reviews I've seen of this place.
One of the first things I noticed is that you can see into the kitchen from where you dine. I always admire when a restaurant leaves the kitchen open. It's a sign of confidence in their chef. A confidence in the cleanliness and orderliness of the food preparation areas. It's instills confidence in me.
Had the lobster bisque and escargot for appetizer. The bisque was more like a soup than bisque, but still unbelievably delicious. The escargot was phenomenal. Those were some REALLY garlicky and buttery snails! They went really well with the crusty-on-the-outside bread that was served with the table. My mouth is watering just reminiscing about it.
I had the cassoulet, and was totally blown sky-high. It was definitely the culinary high-point of my week. I tried the trout and was almost as blown away. The dinner was impeccable.
The dessert was so-so. Good. But perhaps not as jaw dropping as the appetizers and entres. The pear sorbet was downright disappointing. It definitely missed something ... bland. The tartin was very good, but I don't think I'd get it again. Again - desert was so-so. However, on the plus side, the coffee was ridonkulously delicious. I am a full-fledged coffee snob, and I say the coffee here was as good, or better, than what I brew at home. I loved the cinnamon overtone.
I thought service was fantastic.
The chef came out to gab with us a bit. That was really nice.
The waitresses were great. Attentive to just the right level. They didn't continually harass us with "how's the food" or "can I take your plate" every 5 minutes. They were orderly, accurate, friendly, beautiful, competent, and really bent over backwards to accommodate us (in fact, my favorite things about this restaurant is the escargot, the cassoulet, and the waitresses!)
For example, my stepfather came to dinner half-tipsy. It was pretty obvious he was tipping the bottle beforehand and he had two glasses of wine during dinner. When it came time to order dessert, he ordered it like:
"I'll have this doodah unless you think that doodah is better, but if you think this doodah goes better with coffee than that doodah, I'll have that one, unless this doodah is in season, in which case, I'll have that doodah".
Well guess what? The waitress brought the "wrong" dessert. SHOCK!!!
He sent the dessert back; I was mortified but was looking at the waitress the whole time. He must have told her she had brought the wrong dessert like five times. The whole time she smiled and agreed. Usually a waitress will give you a sidelong glance, or some kind of ... look of frustration or anger. But she continually smiled, agreed, and happily took the dessert back to replace it. She didn't look the least bit frustrated or upset. She was astonishingly professional. -

Unpretentious, down home, country French fare simply prepared and sumptuous. Our favorites include the Casseolet and the Steak au Poivre. Worthy treat for the hungry. The oysters were plump, juicy, and grit free. Great wine list, the Cote du Rhone is delicious by the bottle or the glass.

I have no idea how after eating in this neighborhood for years and was completely unaware of Qeurcy - maybe it was lost in the shadows of it's former neighbor Carciofo (RIP). Regardless, my life is better now that I have discovered it.
It's a real French restaurant with great food in an area sorely overpopulated by brasseries with crappy food and surly waitstaff. I think calling it an oasis would be appropriate. -

Well now I know why this place is perpetually empty.
My husband and I stopped by for a Friday date-nite dinner. The menu looked promising. Lots of classic French dishes. He got the Coq Au Vin, I got the Stuffed Quail. His was part of a pre fix, my lone entree was $22.
And here comes the f-ked up part. They both came with the same sides--green beans and scalloped potatoes. Suddenly I felt like we were at a Boston Market. ???? If I'm paying that much for an entree, I expect its accompaniments to be a little more thought out. You know, maybe something they thought would go really well with what I had chosen. I'm just imagining them in the back ladling these sides from giant chaffing dishes like we're at a buffet. Quel horreur!
The Coq and Quail were both kinda meh. My husband turns to me and says, we'll maybe this is what it's supposed to taste like. In my experience, good food universally tastes good and shouldn't require adjustment of one's taste buds. And especially coq au vin--such a classic dish--shouldn't be an acquired taste.
I was really hoping dinner at Quercy would live up to some of the better reviews I read on yelp. -
Review from Rich B.
When I am hankering for lamb, I go to Quercy. They do a very good rack of lamb. Everything else they do is also very good... sausages, chicken, fish, venison, fish, cassoulet. If you stick to the "frenchier" dishes you'll be happy.
Their wine list has a number of decent and hearty french wines. The chef/owner is charming and their staff is friendly and down to earth.
My only complaints? The decor needs help, especially the front window area. Also, their prices are a tad high. High prices aren't necessarily bad, but sometimes I'd like a little more info to justify it all.
Is the lamb local? The vegetables organic? The grill made of solid gold?
There are a number of reviews on here that were done during Restaurant Week - Restaurant Week can be such a hit-n-miss affair especially in Brooklyn. In fact, I'd vote to remove any reviews written for any place during Restaurant Week - it's never a true picture of a restaurant.
I can't imagine that Quercy could handle Restaurant Week.
They are a very sleepy, quiet, neighborhoody type of place. -

Came here with a group of five for dinner and waited about 15 minutes before being seated. There was also a bit of a wait to get the food, so the owner was very gracious and gave us a bottle of wine - on the house!
The food itself was very good. I had the skate wing which was perfectly prepared. They also offer a great prefix menu - $22 for 3 courses - you can't beat that. -

Went here for a girl's day out. We had the prix fixe brunch (about $15 with drinks) which was a very good price, but I thought not fantastic. I had an egg white omelet and it wasn't great.
The one awesome thing about this place: the molten chocolate cake. Like a melted cheesecake- trust me, it was good. -

Dear Quercy, a former province of France located in the southwest of France,
It took us a bit to figure out what kind of restaurant you were. The boyfriend and I were walking along Court Street on Saturday night only to be enticed by your 'Recession Proof' Prix Fixe menu. What a bargain at $12 (app + dessert), $19 (app or dessert + entrée), or $22 (app + entrée + dessert).
Your sautéed portabellas were soooo enticingly good, they almost tasted like bacon! Too bad they did not photograph as well (just imagine a big pile of brown slivers, not appetizing in the least). The goat cheese stuff puff pastry, although good, could have been warmed up for a more exciting feast! The lamb apple sausages were nothing to write home about (they were drier than a good martini). But the 4 stars of the night, the Skate Wing! Wowzers! I am not sure how you cooked it to perfection, but it was damn good! Each bite was better than the last.
Adieu,

My favorite local spot to walk around the corner and get the most delicious, authentic, French food. The salads are so tasty, and the meat dishes are all good and they get their bread from caputos! The deserts are great also. Love the atmosphere, sometimes sweet live music. Been there many many times.

We stumbled upon Quercy last week and enjoyed it very much.
Very traditional french restaurant...no fuss simple good food.
Prefix menu totallu worth it.
the escargots au cognac wee simply delicious and so tender, not like the small pieces of rubber covered in butter you usually get in your local French Bistro. The pate was pretty good as well.
Entrees we had that made us very satisfied Coq au vin, trout and Half Chicken in mustard sauce.
All the entrees were served with potatoes and green beans. Just simple and comforting.
Service was impeccable but if you are a high-maintenance person that needs something every 2 min forget it. The poor woman was waitress, bar tender, busser, food runner and hostess... she did a heck of a job!
Had a great bottle of Chablis.
Great prices. -

The food was pretty good. I love French wines so I really liked the wine list especially the 'by the glass'. The service was great also. The reason I gave Quercy only 3 stars was because the restaurant smells slightly moldy or musty which detracted from the entire experience. A shame because everything else was good. Also the decor was a bit odd (suburban 80's kitchen).

Been here three times now... time for a review.
Pretty solid French food in a friendly, neighborhood-style setting but it's easy to see how ordering the wrong item on the wrong night could lead to a terrible meal. There's a single waitress/hostess which speaks to the restaurant's limited business -- with a menu as large as Quercy's, some items are bound to suffer when the food turnover is so infrequent.
The cassoulet is absolutely top-notch, with a full duck confit, slices of delicious smoky sausage, tender chunks of pork loin and creamy beans. Perfect winter fare!
The frisee au lardons is fairly good, but the lardons seemed to arrive directly from the deep frier. Ugh.
The pate de campagne was also very good, but that is made far enough in advance so there's little risk there.
The crab bisque was decent, but lacked the silky smoothness of a great bisque.
The wines are decent and fairly priced.
Bottom line: Jonesing for some decent French food without the hassle of a trip into the City? Quercy's a solid neighborhood choice. -

We went for BK restaurant week, and true to suspicions, we were disappointed. When you go for restaurant week, you fear and maybe even suspect, if you are really cynical, that you are going to get a subpar meal churned out for your $21, and that is indeed what happened. Granted, my salmon was fine, and my boyfriend's brother was satisfied with his half chicken. But the bf's lamb sausages were burned, meager, and middling; everyone's vegetables were unconscionably overdone; and the potatoes au gratin were lukewarm at best. The waitress was friendly and accommodating with us at first, with our slow-ass wine decision-making, but after that we never saw her. Granted they were busy, and they probably never see those sort of crowds, but we left thoroughly unimpressed. Final answer: MEH!

We've eaten here three times for dinner and every thing we've ordered has been amazing. Great rustic French food, a nice cozy atmosphere and no pretentiousness - what more could you ask for? Recommended: duck confit salad, fois gras terrine, cassolet, beef bourguignon, poires belle hlne (pear poached in red wine with mascarpone ice cream), and just about anything else your friendly waitress recommends :)

We've gone to this fabulous French restaurant for brunch and just loved it! The food is excellent and the decor is very tasteful. I usually go for the mushroom omelette while the hubby goes for some sort of chicken salad. We've never been disappointed and plan to go there for dinner sometime. Definitely nicer than some of the restaurants on Smith Street, yet it's right on Court Street.

It's a mystery why there aren't more people at Quercy every night. The absolutely astounding food is obscured by what can feel like an austere ambiance. The opposite of Watty & Meg, whose decor is beautiful, but whose food is solidly "meh", Quercy has amazing food, where to begin? The escarot with cognac is terrific, the lamb sausages with apples are authentic and sublime. The trout is fantastic, as is the soft shell crab and the peking duck. Surprisingly, even the braised leek salad is excellent.
Quercy is truly authentic French cuisine prepared exquisitely well, for a reasonable price. Avoid wasting your money elsewhere. -

You cannot serve the same sides with EVERY entree. No, no, no. It means you just couldn't be bothered with having an opinion. And this is not the place that serves a $10 well drink & gets away with it.

Idiosyncratic, charismatic but daffy--that could describe the menu, staff or service here. I was more charmed than some will be, and our wait for the cheque was interminable, and the food felt a little too pricey... and for all that, I still think this is a great place to take a wager on some future evening. Chances are better than not you'll have great food, mixed service and a similar outlook to me, unless you don't like the staples of French cuisine, in which case you wouldn't be interested anyhow. We're going to give this one a couple more chances to see how things click. I'm told the wine list is reasonably priced, which is a little surprising given the menu costs.

I recently visited Quercy on a Saturday evening. Although the setting inside gives the impression of a bistro that has been there for years, I've been eating at a recently closed restaurant on the corner for years and don't remember seeing it. Nonetheless, the food is decidedly French and unpretentious; the service a little amateurish and the wine list is decent.
I enjoyed my meal, but didn't think it was anything particularly special. The Sweetbreads are pan fried and touched off nicely with capers. One of the members of our party ordered the Frisee Salad with Lardons which she raved about; but I'm not going ga-ga over Chicory and bacon. The Beef Bourguignon is tasty, but perhaps a touch dry for my taste, and could maybe benefit from one more cube of beef. The Calf's Liver is good and the Rack of Lamb was probably the best thing I had. The people at the next table were raving about the Cassoulet, which I would've ordered, but for the fact that I'm reluctant to order anything I know I can make (and make it damn good too) at home.
In short, I had a good meal but nothing blew me away. -

My husband and I ate here after passing by a few times and wanting to check it out. Well we did tonight.
Service was sporatic at best. We were served food we did not order but by the time we realized it, it was eaten. I had scallops. The were cooked correctly with a nice sear on them. The potatos that came with them were very good, and the scallops were fresh. The problem was with the sauce. It was virtually tastless.
My husband ordered the cassolet. It was 90% a huge plate of white beans and a duck leg. Far too many beans. And again they were flavorless & lacked seasoning.
I checked out the kitchen and there was 1 mexican guy in there cooking and another mexican guy cleaning up.
People next to us complained that it took 2 hours to have their meal .
I was not impressed with this place at all. There are much better places in the area to eat and the price is not worth it for what you get. Maybe the pre-fixe is a better deal.
I noticed the owner/ waitress reaming out our waiter for serving us the wrong appetizer.
8 people in the place and it was Kaos.
Go elsewhere. -

We visited Quercy again this evening. It was delightful, as usual. The service was friendly and personal. The chef waved a big smily "bon appetite" as he went by. It is a great special occasion experience at an everyday price.

My sister and I have been meaning to try this restaurant for a couple of years. Finally achieved our goal last night and had a delicious meal. We both had the prix fixe meal. The escargots with mushrooms was to die for. So delicious and great to sop up sauce with the bread. My sister had the pate de compagne--another home run. It was a big hunk and she took leftovers with her to have for lunch today. We both had the skate wing and that was terrific as well. She had sorbet and I had chocolate cake--both yummy. Plus a good bottle of wine. The only mystery was why wasn't this restaurant more crowded on a Saturday night. We will be returning!

The food is excellent when the owner is in the kitchen. The ambiance is really great and the waitstaff is usually well informed and help full. I'm surprised that they don't have more customers. Don't go on the chefs day off, when the kitchen help cooks (usually on Tuesdays).

It was only ok - just really nothing exceptional at all.
Gravad lox was a bit too salty, Coq al Vin was ok, but mostly sauce and not much chicken. Chicken with mustard sauce did not exceed what I could have easily made at home, and the rack of lamb came out virtually raw when medium was asked for.
The asparagus soup was good, tho.
Perhaps worth trying, but not worth returning to. -
Review from Polly H.
I loved this place. Just absolutely delicious! I had mounds of fresh rich butter for my tasty bread loaves, which were chewy, hence the supply of butter. For a long time, I walked pass it on the way to the Cobble Hill theatre, & I have always wanted to try it. The salad was rich, and diverse, with escarole and various types of lettuce, and it came with the most decadent dressing(homemade). I ordered the rosemary rack of lamb that was medium rare. It was absolutely heavenly, since it was juicy, flavorful, with herbs and easy to eat. I have to say that this was ultimately one of my favorite french restaurants. My boyfriend at the time had the trout and really enjoyed it. He said it had bones and was extremely fresh. Following dinner, we had coffee and wine, and by that time, we have just had a great time. There is live music when we went at 8 pm. She was really good. I also really find this place memorable because my boyfriend proposed to me here. The owner then offers us more drinks and pampering, which I just gushed and was so appreciative of until today. I still have great things to say about Quercy and have taken my friends that are new to Brooklyn here as well.

This evening was a bit hurried for me. My cousin was visiting from Manhattan for the second time in 8 years. We had a concert to go to after dinner. And we had 8:00 reservations at Quercy. My cousin wanted to eat out with his son but I wasn't feeling going out twice in a row because he wanted to so I made a quick, rustic italian pasta dish for them. Everyone else wanted some too so dinner at Quercy almost became an after thought. We finally get over there and we get a table quickly and it's extremely busy for Restaurant Week. They are clearly not used to running around like that. We ordered our wine with the waitress' help and placed our orders and finally received some very underwhelming rustic French food. My lamb sausage dish was burned and my vegetables were cooked beyond recognition. My brother seemed to like his half chicken but he also likes to eat at McDonald's several times a week. The potatoes au gratin were in fact lukewarm. Can you imagine feeling screwed over a $21 three course meal? I knew I cooked a far superior meal than Quercy that night. And that's my gauge for a restaurant. If I can cook a better meal they have problems.
