I thought my experience would be like DMV where you literally can spend all day waiting on line. I've been at this location twice in my life both for name changes. I was in here for approx. 36 minutes each, which surprisingly is efficient for a public service. I highly recommend to arrive here very early when this office opens or in the early afternoon. The staff including security guard is nastily rude and disrespectful as it's just a job where you process paper work after paper work. The social security clerk screamed at several people in front of me for not producing any form of photo identification, as they'll give you a hard time for when issuing a social security to infant or name change. The social security clerks all appears disgruntled with working here and exhausted from processing paper work.
I'd highly recommend filling out all the documents online:
http://www.ssa.gov/onl...
Note: It is essential that you must bring ORIGINAL documents when you are requesting a new social security or name change: photo identification, driver's license, Divorce Decree, U.S. Passport, and marriage license.
I had a five star experience at the social security office this morning. I had to change my name due to marriage. I was in and out in 15 minutes. Woohoo!
You can too if you do the following things:
1. Print out your documents and fill them out online http://www.ssa.gov/onl...
2. Bring all of the acceptable form of ID they require (birth certificate, passport, marriage license, etc)
3. Show up BY 7am. Not 7:10. Not 7:28. Not 7:30.
Show. Up. By. SEVEN am.
Give yourself about 15 minutes to walk from the LIRR train to the office. The area wasn't quite as shady as expected-I was expected to be mugged, raped, and murdered. None of the above happened, but I did regret wearing any jewelery, because I'm paranoid like that.
I'm sure this office becomes a sh*t show later in the day-they have enough ropes to herd in what is probably 75 people, so SHOW UP EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to obtain a social security card here, having somehow gone through 27 years of my life never having had one. I printed out my application online, had it ready along with my original birth certificate, passport, and drivers license, and was in line by about 7:40 a.m. behind 5 other people. I was out by 8:00 am, having been helped by a very friendly and efficient lady who actually said things like, "Hello," and "Have a nice day," and even joked around with me! Like Tina C. below, I was fearing that this would be a dmv-like horror show, but it was nothing of the sort. The only slight complaint is that there was no parking available immediately around the building; everything is reserved for official vehicles. I parked on one of the side streets near the park at a meter. My card came in the mail about 5 or 6 days later, as promised. As good as it gets for a government-run office!
The problem with this office is it's horribly unfriendly security guys that bark at you to get in line. The second problem is the idiots that come here and don't read or ask or find out what they need to know to get done what they need to get done.
The result? A bunch of morons that are holding up the line in front of you which further exhausts your patience as the people who work here all seem extremely unhappy and grumpy.
I suppose it's typical of most government line ups and establishments that it be annoying, slow and unhelpful. Baaaah
Had to help a family member apply for a new social security card and was directed here instead of the closer field office. As expected, the wait was just horrible! I put this office in the category of "survival of the fittest, who can stand in line for 2+ hours" for government offices. It is SO unnecesary because why can't they just have people pull numbers, and let them sit for the two hours until their names are called? Instead, you have poor shmucks standing for hours on end, moving 2 inches every 10 minutes or so ...
Advice: bring someone else with you (I dunno, trick them?) and take turns waiting in line. Funny enough, once we got to the window, it took all of 3 minutes for her to accept the application. GAH!
Two stars for: bathrooms available (but NOT if you are waiting in line!), and seats available (but NOT if ... you guessed it people ... waiting in line!) ...
