5 reviews for Queen Liliuokalani Gardens
After Liliuokalani Gardens got a facelift about 8 years ago [Dear Time, Please slow down for me...], it became an even more popular place for locals to exercise, fish, and picnic. The park has improved so much over the years! It's cleaner than ever before, with trash removed regularly. The ground seems to have been evened out, so rainwater doesn't pond and stagnate in the low areas of the grass. A paved sidewalk circling the park is the reason why I ran three loops there every day when I was living in Hilo!
Like Keiko S. said, it's built in the fashion of a Japanese garden. While the grounds are nothing like you'll see in Japan (or even the Japanese gardens in such cities as San Fransisco), it's still a nice place for photography, exercise, picnicking, and fishing.
There's a nice view of Hilo Bay from the park as well!

I guess I've been spoiled by the Oriental gardens in California, because this garden was exactly like those except for the Hawaiian historical references, the lava rock in the middle of the garden, and the mongooses that were camera shy. There were also lots of local kids fishing and crabbing in the ponds. I should've just looked from the edge and moved on because I got 13 bug bites on my legs and my boyfriend got 14 on his. The bug bites were huge and painfully itchy! It's been over a month, and they still haven't gone away. Hawaiian mosquitoes are vicious!

Liliuokalani Gardens was built in the early 1900's to honor the Japanese immigrants on the island. With ponds, pagodas, bridges and walkways, it was constructed to resemble a Japanese garden. 100 years later, it is still looking beautiful...although with many crowds and noise, it probably isn't as lush green, serene and spiritual as it originally was.
The garden is located next to Coconut Island, a large public parking lot and a hotel. Sounds like a perfect wedding venue to me!

Liliuokalani Gardens is a beautiful place for a morning stroll. It is picturesque and calming. The Japanese pagodas and arches make it very zen.

This park is well maintained and beautiful! There is plenty of parking, and is extremely clean (at least when I visited!) Bring a lunch with you and grab a vacant picnic table and enjoy the sights. Take a walk across the footbridge that takes you to Coconut Island to people watch or bring your fishing pole to go fishing. This is a great place to spend a couple hours if it's sunny in Hilo.
