Delicious coffee. Seriously. In agreement with Chris A. DEFINITELY get the single cup brews. Worth the extra dollar. Wasn't as impressed with the cappuccino but it was absolutely fine if your craving a milky drink.
Takes a while to be helped and served but as my roommate just noted, this leaves room for a nice conversation with either the people you are with or the people serving you coffee.
What's the rush about anyway?
The best coffee I've ever tasted in the US. But the carpetbagger clientele have the tendency to snort, scowl and feign boredom. I would recommend bringing a Mac-top or book by Proust if you want to blend with this quiet crowd. Not a place to promulgate bragging rights of last night's sexual banter with the blond at the bar. But a good hearty brew, nonetheless.
Be forewarned, there's a utility closet upstairs where the owner will hogtie you and throw your sorry ass if you idle by the front door too long.
Easily the best coffee I've had in DC and in a very friendly, comfortable location, too. If you're at all interested in good coffee, you'll want to try one of the single cup brews from the dozen or so varieties roasted in the back.
Qualia is focused on the coffee and so the food options are simple - pastries, bagels, cookies and hummus & veggies - but tasty and reasonably priced.
Great coffee. Only place I've seen in DC that roasts their own beans, which is a definite plus. In addition to some great fresh-roasted beans, they have all the typical espresso offerings available. I like getting the cold-brewed iced coffee. It's so strong that you may want to dilute it, but I'm not complaining about that.
Not much in the way of food offerings, but that's not the primary draw. Nice atmosphere--a good place to hang out.
I've been enjoying Qualia's coffee quite a bit since Jole S picked up cafe au laits and freshly roasted beans a few weeks ago. We've enjoyed the the brew at home, and popped in to have a cup or two (and some of their delicious zucchini bread) in person. On top of the tastiness of the coffee, I'm really excited to see such a popular spot open up on Georgia Avenue.
Service: good; Atmosphere: good; Coffee: Very good.
I probably won't be back simply because it is in an awkward location for me to get to. It is on a major street with bus line access for patrons who live north or south, but I don't, so getting here means walking nine blocks. There are other coffee shops for me.
But I do recommend this place to others who live elsewhere or have a car.
This is a fabulous coffeehouse in a neighborhood that really needed one. Not only do they roast their own beans but the service is great and the space is peaceful. I asked them for suggestions about what coffee to give as a gift and they were very knowledgeable about their products. A definite go-to for coffee addicts like me.
I'm psyched that this place has finally opened.
Joel, the owner, has been a consistent presence over the years at a number of DC area farmers markets -- always available to brew the perfect cup of coffee and to provide the best micro-roasted coffee beans in the city. And now he's got a COFFEE SHOP!!!
The space is tastefully done up and the coffee is superb! And if you're interested in how roasting is done, they roast coffee in almost daily batches in the back of the coffeehouse.
You CAN NOT POSSIBLY FIND FRESHER BEANS IN THE CITY!!
Anyway, check it out for the great coffee and the cozy atmosphere.
This is a GREAT BOON for the Georgia Avenue/Petworth neighborhood. But definitely worth making the trip if you're looking for a truly fresh cup of coffee and the best beans in the city.
I finally had a chance to check out Qualia today when I was trying to escape visiting family. I went there with a book got myself and iced latte (they do carry soy milk) and had the most relaxing 90 minutes I have had in a long time. I sat outside in the patio, enjoying the best iced latte (the cold coffee drink is usually not so on my hit list) and forgot about time for a while... The ambience inside is nice with photgraphs from across the world on the walls.... It is easy to find as it across the street from the Wendy's and Safeway (there gotta be a nickname for this rather unsavory Safeway). The snack offering was a bit limited it seemed but I was there mid afternoon so maybe the AM breakfast crowd had eaten all of it. I will definitely be back. That coffee was tasty! (-L
