Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau State Monument
3 reviews for Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau State Monument
This spot is always the itinerary of my personally guided circle island tours.
1. You get a great feel for ancient Hawaii as it is the largest spot of it's kind on Oahu. To me it is tremendously interesting. It's not hard to imagine what it looked like when it was being used by the ancients.
2. You get fantastic views of Waimea Bay and the Northern Coast.
3.. It's not all that far off the beaten path so it's an easy spot to get to. It's a nice quiet spot to stop and have a cold drink and relax for a little while.
What a beautiful place! Came here on my maiden voyage to Hawaii, the first morning after my arrival. It was a dramatic way to take in Hawaii's natural beauty and appreciate it's cultural heritage. I couldn't help but notice we were breathing some of the freshest, sweetest smelling air in the world. We were lucky enough to spot some humpback whales just off the coast below. Highly recommended stop-off point while visiting the North Shore.
I added some beautiful photos that speak for themselves.
According to Hawaiian Airlines and the National Hawaiian Landmark site: This national landmark and registered state historical site (dedicated December 29, 1962) is situated on a pali overlooking a superb view of Waimea Valley and the bay. Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau is the largest heiau (religious site or temple) on Oahu, with an estimated construction date of around 1600. This heiau played an important part in the social, political, and religious structure of Waimea Valley and was used for a range of significant activities ranging from the birthplace of the ancient chiefs' children, to a place of religious ceremonies, to a temple of human sacrifice. It is a platform type luakini temple with a low-walled court where Oahu's greatest priests may have come from (this district). In 1792, 3 men from Captain Vancouver's ship, HMS DAEDALUS, were believed to have been sacrificed here.
I says: We came here to watch the sunset on Valentine's Day. It was MENTAL! So awesome. View of all of Waimea Bay in all it's beauty with the waves rolling in and the sunset going off with the green hills in the background. This is also the heiau featured in North Shore The Movie. Ironically enough we saw John (aka Turtle) here LOL. Don't be a kook and take a rock from here. It's not cool and you'll be hella haunted brah. I seriously recommend checking this place out. Tip: Locals drive AROUND the speed bumps (note tire tracks in the surrounding dirt).
