My guide advised me: "His eyes are too pure, to behold evil. . . Therefore, it is here, where you shall await salvation. . ."
Aside from reflecting the properties of a "state of being" or condition, Purgatory Creek, AKA "Corey Creek" is a very real, physical place on this earth, in a freshwater, wetland steam in Blue Point.  The Town of Brookhaven established this area, just off Montauk Highway, as a manifestation of temporal punishment for those imperfectly purified or spiritually unrepenting of their venial sins.  Behold, the devil's portal, through a fireplace of stone, centered in the "three at once" trees (see pics).  Aside from the passing traffic, it is a very still place, best visited at night.  There are picnic tables and benches here, as well as a faux wishing well, though your earthly appetites and wants are no longer to be of importance.
